Phishing is a message or web page that pretends to come from someone you trust and pressures you to reveal information, send money, open a file, or sign in. The safest response is to stop, verify through a known-good channel you opened yourself, report the attempt, and delete it.

Urgency, account or payment problems, unexpected refunds or prizes, delivery notices, requests for passwords or financial details, attachments you did not expect, and links whose destinations do not match the claimed organization are the most useful warning signs. A polished logo, familiar colors, or perfect grammar proves nothing.

The 30-second phishing check

When an unexpected email, text, or web page asks you to act, pause before touching the link or attachment. Ask four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Was I expecting this exact contact, transaction, delivery, or account notice?
  2. Is the sender really the organization, or only a familiar display name, logo, phone number, or design?
  3. What happens if I do nothing? A threat, deadline, payment demand, prize, refund, or account-suspension warning is a pressure tactic.
  4. Can I verify the issue without using anything in this message?

If the answer to the last question is yes, open a new browser window and type the organization’s known address yourself, use a bookmark you created earlier, or call a number printed on a bill or card. Never use the phone number, reply address, or link supplied by the suspicious message.

Federal Trade Commission data shows that email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024, according to a 2025 consumer alert. The same basic impersonation technique also appears in text messages and counterfeit websites.

What phishing is and why convincing messages work

Phishing is social engineering: the attacker borrows the identity of a bank, retailer, employer, delivery service, government office, colleague, or other trusted party. The goal is to make you act before you have time to check. Scammers use email or text messages to try to steal passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers.

The message may lead to a look-alike sign-in page, request a card payment, ask you to confirm identity information, or deliver an attachment that can install malware. It may be professionally written. Logos and branding can be copied, and a message can appear to come from a name you recognize even when the underlying address or number is unrelated.

Do not treat grammar as a security test. Some fraudulent messages contain errors; others are edited carefully or generated from real company language. The combination of unexpected contact, pressure, a sensitive request, and an unverified destination is more meaningful than spelling or visual polish.

How to recognize a phishing email

Check whether the contact makes sense

Start with context. Did you recently place the order, open the account, request the refund, or speak with the person named in the email? An unprompted notice deserves independent verification even if it refers to a real company you use. A real event can also be used as the pretext for a fake message, so recognition of the brand is not confirmation of the sender.

Inspect the real sender address

Display names are easy to spoof. Expand the sender details and read the complete address rather than relying on the name shown in the inbox. Compare the domain and address with an earlier, genuine bill or message from the organization. A logo in the signature does not authenticate the account.

Do not assume that a message is safe because it arrives in the same conversation or appears to use a familiar identity. Treat an unexpected request for a password, payment, personal data, or a change to account details as suspicious until you verify it outside the message.

Recognize pressure and high-risk requests

Urgent threats, account-suspension notices, payment-fix requests, supposed security alerts, invoices you do not recognize, refunds, prizes, and requests for financial or identity information are common pressure points. The attacker wants you to solve a problem immediately instead of checking the claim.

A legitimate organization may send an alert, but you can still open its official site independently and review notifications there. If the alert is real, the same issue should be visible after you navigate to the service yourself; if it is not, do not continue through the message.

Reveal where a link really goes

On a computer, hover over a link without clicking and inspect the destination shown by your mail program or browser. Compare that destination with the organization named in the message. Visible link text can say one thing while the underlying destination goes somewhere else.

Do not click merely because the text names a familiar company. If you are using a phone and cannot inspect the destination comfortably, do not open it. Launch your browser separately and type the known address or use a trusted bookmark.

Treat unexpected attachments as dangerous

An attachment you did not request can install malware or present another fake sign-in prompt. Do not open it to find out what it contains. Confirm the file through a known contact method and have the sender resend it through the normal system if the file is genuinely needed.

Verify without using the message

Use contact details from a bill, payment card, contract, official directory, or a website address you entered yourself. Do not call the number in the suspicious email, reply to it, or follow its “help” instructions. Independent verification is the step that defeats impersonation: you are checking the account or transaction with the real organization rather than with the person claiming to represent it.

How to recognize a phishing text (smishing)

Smishing is phishing delivered by SMS or another messaging service. Federal Trade Commission examples include fake package-delivery notifications, invoices, suspicious-activity alerts, payment-problem notices, free-prize or coupon offers, and requests for account or identity information.

Look for an unexpected story and a fast action

A text may claim that a parcel cannot be delivered, a payment failed, suspicious activity was detected, or a reward is waiting. The short format is designed to make a link or phone number feel like the obvious next step. If you did not initiate the event, stop and verify through the organization’s app or a web address you enter yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reply, click, or unsubscribe

Do not answer a suspicious text, tap its link, call its number, download a file, or use an “unsubscribe” link. A reply can confirm that your number is active, while an unsubscribe link can lead to the same spoofed site as the original message. Report the text through your carrier’s spam mechanism or forward it to 7726 (SPAM) where that service is supported.

Use the genuine service instead

Open the delivery company, bank, payment service, or retailer’s official app, or type its known address into your browser. Sign in there and look for the alleged alert. If no matching notice exists, treat the text as fraudulent and report it.

How to identify a fake website

Navigate independently

A spoofed site can copy a bank, retailer, government service, or other trusted organization and ask for a password, card number, or personal details. The safest test is to avoid the supplied link entirely. Use a bookmark you trust or type the organization’s known address, then sign in from that starting point.

If the account’s genuine site shows no corresponding alert, payment problem, or message, do not return to the linked page. Close it and report the contact that sent you there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not mistake appearance or a padlock for identity

Familiar colors, logos, layout, professional wording, and a padlock in the browser do not prove that the operator is the claimed organization. A padlock indicates an encrypted connection to the site you reached; it does not establish who controls that site or why it is requesting your data.

Be especially cautious at sign-in and payment screens

Stop when a page reached from an unsolicited message asks for a password, one-time code, payment-card number, Social Security number, or other identity information. Google advises that if a link asks for a Google password, you should go directly to the service instead of entering the password on the linked page. The same independent-navigation rule applies to every account.

What to do when a message looks suspicious

Use this order so that you do not accidentally give the sender more information:

  1. Stop. Do not click, reply, call the number in the message, download an attachment, or enter credentials.
  2. Verify independently. Open the known-good website or app yourself, or call a number taken from a bill, card, contract, or official site. Check whether the claimed problem exists.
  3. Report it. Report the email to your provider or to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at [email protected]. Report suspicious texts to 7726 where supported. Report the scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Follow your employer’s or school’s reporting procedure as well.
  4. Delete it. Remove the message after reporting so that you or another person using the device cannot open it accidentally.

Keep a copy or screenshot before deletion if your workplace, bank, carrier, or law-enforcement process requires evidence. Record the sender address or number, the time, the link destination if you inspected it without opening it, and what information—if any—you provided.

If you already clicked a phishing link

A click is a reason to respond methodically, not to panic. The risk depends on what happened next: whether a file opened, credentials were entered, or financial and identity information was submitted.

You clicked but entered nothing

Close the page without downloading anything or signing in. Update the computer or phone’s security software and run a scan. Remove anything the scan identifies. Continue monitoring the account that the page claimed to represent by opening the genuine service independently.

You downloaded or opened a file

Stop interacting with the file and disconnect the device from sensitive work or personal services if your organization’s procedure calls for it. Update security software, run a full scan, and remove anything the scan identifies. Contact your workplace or school immediately if the device is managed by them; their response process may require preserving logs or isolating the device.

You entered a password or one-time code

From the organization’s genuine site—not from the message—change the exposed password immediately. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it there too. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on the affected account and review active sessions, recovery addresses, and security notifications for changes you did not make.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A one-time code is not harmless simply because it expires. If a scammer persuaded you to provide one, contact the real service through its official support route and explain that the code was disclosed.

  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.

You exposed bank, card, or Social Security information

Contact the bank or card issuer using the number on the card or a statement, not a number in the message. Ask what account restrictions, replacement cards, transaction review, or fraud-monitoring steps are appropriate. If your Social Security number or other identity information was exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov or the relevant institution’s official fraud process. Report promptly and keep the confirmation numbers and dates.

Document what happened

Write down the message, destination, time, device, information entered, and actions taken while the details are fresh. Prompt, accurate information helps a bank, service provider, employer, or identity-theft team determine which accounts and sessions need protection.

Defenses that reduce the damage

Use multi-factor authentication

MFA requires two or more credentials. The factors can be something you know, such as a password or PIN; something you have, such as a one-time code, authenticator app, or security key; or something you are, such as a biometric. MFA can limit the damage from a stolen password, although you should still treat unexpected MFA prompts or code requests as suspicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn it on first for email, banking, primary identity accounts, cloud storage, and any service that can reset other passwords. Store recovery codes in a secure place and make sure you understand the account’s recovery process before losing access to your usual device.

Consider a phishing-resistant security key

A FIDO2 security key is a physical authentication device designed to work with compatible accounts and devices. It can provide stronger protection against a fake sign-in page than a password alone because the key verifies the legitimate website during authentication. Check the account’s supported standards, your phone and computer compatibility, and the current availability of the key before buying one. Keep a second registered key or another supported recovery method where the service allows it.

Use a password manager carefully

A password manager can create unique passwords so that one stolen password does not unlock several accounts. It should fill credentials only on the exact site it recognizes; if it refuses to fill on a page reached from an unexpected message, stop and verify the address independently. Protect the manager itself with a strong, unique master credential and MFA.

Keep devices and browsers current

Install security and browser updates promptly. Updates do not identify every scam, but they improve the device’s ability to detect malicious files and reduce exploitable weaknesses. Keep security software enabled and know how to start a scan before an incident occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes that make phishing worse

  • Trusting the display name: the visible name is not proof of the sending account.
  • Using the supplied contact details: a scammer controls the number, reply address, and link they provide.
  • Equating a padlock with legitimacy: encryption does not identify the site operator.
  • Believing perfect grammar: polished writing and copied branding are easy to produce.
  • Clicking to investigate: opening a file or page can be the harmful action; verify outside the message instead.
  • Entering a code because it is “only temporary”: a one-time code can authorize an attacker while it is valid.
  • Deleting before reporting: reporting first preserves useful details for the provider, carrier, employer, or investigators.

A simple decision rule for future messages

When a contact combines an unexpected situation with urgency and a request for access, money, or personal information, assume it is untrusted until independently verified. Do not let a familiar brand, a convincing page, or a deadline replace that check. Navigate to the real service yourself, confirm the event, report the attempted impersonation, and use MFA and unique credentials to limit the consequences if a password is ever exposed.
