How to Recharge a Citizen Eco-Drive Watch That Has Stopped

Expose the watch dial to bright light, preferably direct sunlight or a bright window, with the dial uncovered. Leave it there long enough for its movement to recover; charging time depends on the caliber and light intensity. Keep the watch below about 60°C (140°F), the temperature at which Citizen cautions against charging. If the watch still stops or the second hand continues to jump after a full charge, identify the caliber on the case back and follow that movement’s Citizen manual. Some calibers require a reset after recharging.

Eco-Drive watches convert light into electrical energy stored for later use, so a stopped watch is often discharged rather than fitted with a conventional replaceable battery. The procedure below explains how to recharge it safely, how long a representative B620 movement takes, and what to do when charging alone does not restore normal operation.

Why a Citizen Eco-Drive watch stops

Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology explanation says the system uses natural or artificial light to generate and store power. A watch can therefore stop after spending too long in darkness, in a drawer, under clothing, or in a location where the dial receives very little light.

Some models warn you before the reserve is exhausted. On caliber B620, Citizen says the second hand moves once every two seconds when the power reserve is low. If the watch is left uncharged for eight days or longer after that warning begins, the movement can run out of power and stop. Citizen’s basic analog guidance also treats two-second jumps as a signal that the watch needs more light, but hand behavior and timing are not identical across every Eco-Drive caliber.

When fully charged, Citizen says Eco-Drive watches can run for more than six months in total darkness. Select power-save models are claimed to last up to seven years. Those are manufacturer figures with model-specific exceptions, not a guarantee for an unknown watch.

Recharge the watch safely: the essential procedure

  1. Find the caliber and check the condition. Turn the watch over and look for the movement or caliber reference engraved on the case back. Photograph the markings if they are small. The word “Eco-Drive” by itself does not identify the charging time or reset sequence.
  2. Expose the dial. Remove anything covering the face and place the watch where the dial receives strong light. Citizen recommends sunlight as the quickest source in its basic analog guidance. A bright window is a practical alternative when direct outdoor sunlight is unavailable.
  3. Choose a bright but moderate-temperature location. Keep the watch in a window-side spot or another bright area where it will not become hot. Do not charge it on a dashboard, in a closed car, or against a heat source. The B620 manual cautions against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher.
  4. Allow an uninterrupted charging period. Do not judge the result after only a few minutes unless the movement’s manual specifically says that is sufficient. A deeply discharged watch may need hours or days, especially under indoor lighting. Keep the dial exposed throughout the period.
  5. Check the second hand. A normally operating analog movement should advance at its regular interval. If it still advances in two-second steps, continue charging and consult the caliber-specific instructions. If it stops again shortly after light exposure, proceed to the troubleshooting section rather than guessing at a failed component.
  6. Set the time only after the movement runs normally. Once the watch is operating steadily, set the time and any calendar functions using the instructions for that caliber. Multifunction models can have additional hand positions and reset requirements.

There is no special charging pad, replacement battery, generic “solar-watch charger,” or repair kit required for the core procedure. The watch is designed to take power from light already available to you.

How long charging takes

Charging time is determined by the movement, the intensity of the light, the distance from an artificial source, and how depleted the stored energy is. The following figures come from Citizen’s B620 manual and apply only to that caliber under the stated conditions. “Start normally” means enough charge for the movement to begin normal operation; “full charge” is a much longer target.

Light source and condition Approximate time to start normally from discharged Approximate time to full charge
Sunny outdoor light 50 minutes 9 hours
Cloudy outdoor light 7 hours 60 hours
30 W fluorescent lamp at 20 cm 25 hours 180 hours
500-lux interior lighting 160 hours Not stated in the B620 manual

These are approximate B620 estimates, not universal Eco-Drive promises. A different caliber may start sooner, require longer exposure, use a different low-charge indication, or specify another procedure. If you do not know the caliber, use the table as an illustration of how dramatically light intensity changes the result, not as a timetable for your particular watch.

Why sunlight is faster

Sunny outdoor light delivers far more energy to the dial than ordinary room lighting, so the B620 table reaches normal operation in about 50 minutes in sun but estimates 160 hours under 500-lux interior light. Cloudy outdoor light is slower than sun but substantially faster than the specified indoor fluorescent and low-lux conditions. Artificial light can work; it simply may require a much longer, continuous exposure.

Starting the watch versus filling the reserve

A watch that begins ticking after a short exposure is not necessarily fully charged. In the B620 example, 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light may start a discharged movement, while nine hours is the approximate full-charge figure. If you stop exposure as soon as the hands move, the reserve may remain too low for reliable operation away from light. Continue according to the manual’s full-charge guidance when you need the watch to run through darkness.

Use the figures as a comparison, not a promise

The B620 table also shows why “leave it under a lamp for an hour” is not a dependable rule. At 20 cm from the specified 30-watt fluorescent lamp, the movement may need about 25 hours merely to start and 180 hours to reach full charge. Under 500-lux interior light, the estimated starting time rises to 160 hours, and the manual does not state a full-charge time for that row. Distance, shade, glass, dial design and the actual intensity reaching the dial all affect the result. When you can safely use outdoor light, it is generally the practical way to recover a deeply discharged watch faster.

Use a light source without overheating the case

Natural sunlight is effective, but concentrated heat is not. The B620 manual’s approximately 60°C (140°F) limit is a safety boundary for charging, not a target temperature. A closed vehicle, hot dashboard, greenhouse, or strong lamp placed too close can heat the case even if the light appears bright.

  • Preferred: direct outdoor sunlight when the watch remains at a safe temperature, or a bright window with good airflow.
  • Acceptable: cloudy outdoor light or a household fluorescent source at a reasonable distance, recognizing that charging can take many hours.
  • Avoid: hot dashboards, enclosed cars, heating vents, and any setup that makes the case uncomfortably hot.

Keep the dial facing the light and remove a sleeve, box lid, or cloth that shades it. Do not place the watch under a lens or other arrangement that concentrates sunlight. If the case becomes hot, move it to a cooler bright location and let it return to a moderate temperature before continuing.

What the two-second hand movement means

On movements that provide this warning, a second hand moving once every two seconds indicates insufficient charge. Citizen’s B620 manual states that the watch will eventually run out of power and stop if it remains uncharged for eight days or longer after the warning starts. The warning does not establish that the rechargeable cell or circuit has failed; it tells you to provide more light.

Not every Citizen watch uses the same hands, warning interval, or reserve period. Do not apply the B620’s eight-day figure to an unidentified caliber. Use the caliber’s manual for the meaning of an unusual hand pattern, and note whether the movement returns to one-second operation after adequate exposure.

If the second hand still jumps after charging

Citizen has a specific support article for watches that have been recharged but continue to show two-second jumps: “I have recharged my watch but the second hand still jumps.” The important point is that some movements need a reset after a low- or no-charge event. A reset is not universal; the button, crown position, hand alignment, and sequence depend on the movement.

Find the correct reset instructions

  1. Read the caliber reference on the case back, including letters and numbers.
  2. Use Citizen’s Watch Care & Instructions resources to locate the matching manual.
  3. Follow the manual’s charging requirement before resetting. A reset performed while the reserve is still low may not hold.
  4. Carry out only the sequence specified for that caliber. Basic analog models and multifunction models can use different procedures.
  5. After the reset, expose the dial again as directed and verify that the second hand advances normally before setting the time.

Citizen’s guidance for certain basic models provides reset steps, while multifunction watches are directed to their relevant manuals. Do not press buttons or pull the crown through random positions based only on the fact that the watch says Eco-Drive; an incorrect sequence can leave the hands or calendar indications misaligned.

Do not confuse a restart with a full recovery

Three different observations are easy to mix up: no movement at all, two-second stepping, and regular one-second operation. No movement after darkness can mean the reserve is exhausted. Two-second stepping, on models that use it, is the low-charge warning. Regular stepping means the movement has started, but it does not prove that the reserve is full. Keep charging for the caliber’s stated full-charge period when practical, especially if the watch must run for days away from light.

When charging is not enough

Citizen’s article “My Eco Drive watch is not keeping time. How can I fix this?” emphasizes caliber-specific instructions. If you have provided the exposure required by the correct manual and completed its reset procedure, but the watch remains stopped, continues to jump, or will not keep time, the cause cannot be identified from the Eco-Drive label alone.

At that point, contact Citizen support or a qualified watch service provider for diagnosis. Possible internal causes should not be assumed without inspection. The available guidance does not establish that an unknown watch has a failed cell, circuit, coil, or other particular part. A technician can determine whether the problem is related to the stored-energy system, movement, hands, moisture, impact, or another condition.

Useful information to provide support

  • The exact caliber and model reference from the case back.
  • How long the watch was exposed to sunlight or artificial light.
  • The type of light and, for a lamp, the approximate distance and wattage.
  • Whether the second hand moves once per second, in two-second jumps, or not at all.
  • Whether the watch was exposed to heat, water, a drop, or another unusual condition.
  • Whether the movement responded after the manual’s reset sequence.

Common charging mistakes to avoid

  • Using the Eco-Drive name as if it were a caliber. It identifies the technology, not the movement-specific charge table or reset procedure.
  • Stopping when the hand first moves. Starting normally and reaching full reserve are separate milestones; the B620 example is 50 minutes versus nine hours in sunny outdoor light.
  • Assuming room light is equivalent to daylight. The B620 estimates 160 hours to start under 500 lux, compared with 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light.
  • Charging through heavy shade. A sleeve, box, curtain or lid reduces the light reaching the dial. Keep the face uncovered.
  • Adding heat to get more light. A hot dashboard or enclosed car is not a safe charging method; Citizen cautions against about 60°C (140°F) or higher.
  • Trying a reset copied from another Citizen watch. Basic analog and multifunction procedures differ, and an incorrect sequence can misalign indications.

Prevent the next complete discharge

Citizen’s B620 manual recommends direct sunlight for five to six hours at least once a month for optimal performance. That is a maintenance recommendation for B620; it is not a universal recovery time for every fully stopped Eco-Drive watch. Regular exposure helps maintain the stored reserve so the watch is less likely to reach its low-charge warning.

For a watch kept in a drawer, periodically place it dial-up in a bright, moderate-temperature location. A window can provide useful light, but check that blinds, curtains, and nearby objects do not shade the dial. Do not leave the watch in a hot place simply because it receives strong sun. The goal is adequate light at a safe temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you rotate several watches, remember that darkness affects each model according to its reserve and power-saving features. Citizen says fully charged Eco-Drive models generally run more than six months in total darkness, while select power-save models can last up to seven years. Those figures are manufacturer claims with exceptions, so use the watch’s own manual rather than planning storage around the longest number.

Quick decision guide

What you observe What to do next
The watch is stopped after darkness or storage Expose the uncovered dial to bright light and allow the caliber-specific charging time; sunlight is fastest when temperature remains safe.
The second hand advances every two seconds Treat it as a low-charge warning on models with that feature. Continue charging and use the correct manual rather than assuming the B620 timing applies.
The watch starts but still jumps after substantial charging Confirm the caliber, reach full-charge guidance, and perform the movement’s specified reset if the manual requires one.
The watch remains stopped after charging and the correct reset Stop experimenting with generic procedures and contact Citizen support or a qualified watch service provider.
The watch becomes very hot while charging Move it away from the heat source. Do not charge at about 60°C (140°F) or higher.

Key points to remember

  • Eco-Drive charging uses light; natural and artificial sources can work.
  • Expose the dial, not a covered case, and expect indoor charging to take far longer than sunlight.
  • B620 figures are examples for caliber B620, not a universal schedule.
  • Two-second jumps can indicate low charge, but the warning behavior differs by movement.
  • Some calibers require a reset after recharging, and multifunction watches need their own manual.
  • If model-specific charging and reset instructions do not restore operation, obtain a professional diagnosis instead of naming a failed part without evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recharge a stopped Citizen Eco-Drive watch indoors?

Yes. Citizen says natural and artificial light can power Eco-Drive watches. Indoor light is usually much slower than sunlight: the B620 manual estimates about 25 hours to start under a 30 W fluorescent lamp at 20 cm and about 160 hours under 500-lux interior lighting.

How long should I leave a stopped watch in sunlight?

There is no universal time because the caliber and light intensity matter. For caliber B620, Citizen estimates about 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light to start normally from discharged and about nine hours for a full charge. Use your own caliber’s manual for a precise instruction.

Why does the second hand move every two seconds?

On models with this feature, two-second stepping indicates insufficient charge. Citizen’s B620 manual says the watch can stop if it remains uncharged for eight days or longer after the warning begins. Other calibers may use different indications and timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special solar-watch charger or replacement battery?

No special charging gadget is required for the core procedure. Expose the uncovered dial to safe, bright light. Do not open the watch or assume a conventional replaceable battery is the problem.

What if the watch still jumps after I charged it?

Identify the caliber, complete the charging requirement in its Citizen manual, and check whether that movement requires a reset. Reset sequences differ, especially on multifunction models. If the watch still fails afterward, contact Citizen support or a qualified watch service provider.

Is it safe to charge an Eco-Drive watch on a car dashboard?

Avoid it. The dashboard can become dangerously hot, and Citizen’s B620 manual cautions against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher. Use bright sunlight or a window-side location that keeps the case at a moderate temperature.

The Bottom Line

Expose the uncovered dial to bright light, keep the case below about 60°C (140°F), and allow enough time for the specific caliber—not merely until the hand first moves. Use the case-back caliber to find Citizen’s manual and reset instructions. If proper charging and the correct reset do not restore normal operation, seek Citizen or qualified watch-service diagnosis.
