To receive an international transfer into an existing bank account, get the receiving bank’s current instructions for the sending country and currency, then give those exact details to the sender. Confirm the expected amount after exchange and fees, and keep the transfer receipt and reference number in case the payment is delayed or short.
What details do I give someone to receive an international bank transfer?
Ask your bank for its current instructions for an incoming international transfer. Tell the bank the sending country and currency if you know them; required details can depend on the route, currency, and bank. Do not assume every payment uses SWIFT, an IBAN, or the same set of fields.

Give the sender the information your bank specifies. It may include:
- Your beneficiary name exactly as the bank records it.
- Your account identifier, in the format the bank requests.
- The receiving bank’s name and address.
- Any required country-specific bank identifier.
- Any intermediary-bank details or instructions the bank provides for that currency or route.
Never guess a code or substitute instructions from another bank or currency. Payment chains can pass through intermediary financial institutions, and information formats vary across systems; U.S. FinCEN guidance discusses differences among systems such as SWIFT, Fedwire, and CHIPS. FinCEN’s funds-travel guidance is regulatory material, not a universal consumer checklist. Australian Moneysmart explains that banks use SWIFT to connect financial institutions for international bank transfers, but this does not mean every international payment method uses SWIFT. What should the sender check before submitting?
Before the sender pays, agree on what will arrive in your account—not just the amount they send or the fee shown at checkout. Ask the sender or provider to confirm:
- The sending and receiving currencies, and the exchange rate that will apply.
- When the exchange rate is fixed, and whether it can change before the payment is processed.
- The provider’s fee, any taxes, and any intermediary or receiving-bank charges.
- Who pays third-party charges and whether a fee option covers intermediary costs.
- The expected amount credited to your account after conversion and deductions.
- The estimated delivery time and how the payment can be tracked or confirmed.
Costs and disclosures depend on the country and transaction. For covered U.S. remittance transfers, Regulation E requires specified disclosures, including provider fees or taxes, the exchange rate when applicable, and the amount to be received; certain third-party fees or taxes may still reduce the recipient’s amount. This is not a worldwide rule for every bank transfer. CFPB guidance on the remittance transfer rule

UK FCA examples say firms should make clear when intermediary or recipient-bank fees may be deducted, and describe an upfront option covering intermediary costs as a good-practice example; availability and terms vary. FCA review of international payment pricing Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency advises that sending fees may not include charges in the receiving country, exchange-rate changes affect the amount received, and recipients may face fees or taxes. It recommends asking when the rate is applied. FCAC guidance on international money transfers

How long does an international money transfer take to reach my account?
Timing depends on the provider and payment route. Canada’s FCAC describes a general range from a few minutes to a few days and notes that faster service may cost more; it is not a guarantee for a particular bank transfer. Check the estimate for the actual service, sending country, receiving country, and currency. FCAC guidance on international money transfers

Ask the sender to keep the receipt and transaction reference number, then share the reference with you. The reference helps the provider or bank trace the payment. FCAC guidance on complaints about federally regulated financial institutions
Why did I receive less than the amount sent?
The amount sent and amount credited can differ because the payment may be converted at an exchange rate, or fees and taxes may be deducted by the transfer provider, an intermediary institution, or the receiving bank. The rate can also affect the result if it is applied at a different point than expected. Ask the sender for the transaction details and compare them with your bank’s credit and any stated charges. For Canadian consumer guidance, see the FCAC explanation of transfer costs and exchange rates.
What should I do if an international transfer is missing or late?
- Get the payment reference. Ask the sender for the receipt, transaction number, transfer date, sending amount, and currency.
- Contact your receiving bank. Ask whether the transfer has arrived, is being reviewed, or is waiting for information. Provide the reference and confirm whether the bank needs anything further from you.
- Ask the sender to contact the provider. The sending provider can investigate the payment from its side. The CFPB advises contacting the company right away when there is a problem with a covered U.S. remittance transfer. CFPB advice on remittance-transfer problems
- Use the formal complaint process if needed. If direct investigation does not resolve the problem, follow the provider’s or bank’s complaint procedure. Complaint rights and processes vary by jurisdiction; FCAC describes the complaint process for federally regulated Canadian financial institutions. FCAC complaint guidance
How to choose a transfer method if the sender has not sent it yet
Compare the complete outcome for your particular destination and currency rather than choosing on the advertised fee alone:
- Net amount expected in your account.
- Exchange rate and when it is fixed.
- Provider, intermediary, and recipient-bank charges, including who bears them.
- Delivery estimate, tracking, and confirmation options.
- Whether the service supports deposits to your bank account for that country and currency.
- Applicable error-resolution and complaint protections.
There is no single recipient-instruction checklist or universally best provider. Your bank’s current instructions and the provider’s current terms are the relevant sources for your specific transfer.
