The service went live on 6 June 2026 and works through participating Indian banks or payment apps and enabled Nepalese banks or payment apps. You normally share a supported Nepal mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA), complete a one-time cross-border consent, and then verify both the sender’s transaction status and the actual credit in your Nepal account or app.
This is an account-to-account remittance service, not the separate UPI QR system used to pay merchants in Nepal.

What the India–Nepal UPI remittance service does
Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) connected Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI) with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for person-to-person cross-border transfers. NCHL describes the service as real-time and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through participating banking and payment applications.

Do not confuse remittances with merchant QR payments
A remittance sends money to a person’s enabled account or payment profile. Nepal’s separate UPI QR acceptance lets an Indian visitor pay participating merchants; it is a person-to-merchant purchase flow. A shop’s QR code is therefore not a substitute for the recipient identifier required for this remittance service.
Who can receive money in Nepal?
Both Indian and Nepali citizens can use the corridor when their banks or non-bank third-party application providers (TPAPs) participate. Support is institution-specific: having an ordinary Nepal bank account does not automatically mean that it can receive an inbound UPI-linked transfer.
NCHL’s current participating Nepal list includes the following institutions and apps:
| Institution or app | Current receiving status |
|---|---|
| Everest Bank Ltd. | Listed as participating |
| Global IME Bank Ltd. | Listed as participating |
| Himalayan Bank Ltd. | Receiving only |
| Machhapuchchhre Bank Ltd. | Listed as participating |
| Nabil Bank Ltd. | Listed as participating |
| Nepal SBI Bank Ltd. | Listed as participating |
| NMB Bank Ltd. | Receiving only |
| connectIPS | Listed as participating |
The list can change as additional institutions are added. Confirm current inbound support directly with your bank or payment provider before someone sends money. “Receiving only” means the institution is shown for the Nepal receiving side; it does not establish that you can use it to initiate the reverse Nepal-to-India direction.
Can I receive UPI in Nepal with any bank account?
No. The account or payment profile must be enabled by a participating Nepal institution for the India-to-Nepal corridor. A domestic account that accepts ordinary transfers may still lack the cross-border feature. Ask the institution to confirm three separate points: that it participates in NPI, that it accepts incoming India-origin UPI transfers, and that your particular account or profile is eligible.
Availability can also differ by direction. NCHL currently marks Himalayan Bank Ltd. and NMB Bank Ltd. as receiving only. Do not assume that an institution listed for receiving can also send money to India. If you maintain profiles at more than one institution, choose the one that explicitly confirms inbound support and use its identifier.
What details should you give the sender?
NCHL says the sender can address the transfer using the recipient’s mobile number or VPA. Ask your institution which exact identifier is enabled for your profile, then copy it carefully.
- Use the supported mobile number: Give the number registered with the participating Nepal account or app, including the country format if the sender’s app requests it.
- Use the supported VPA: Share the VPA exactly as displayed by your Nepal provider. Do not alter punctuation, spelling or the handle.
- Do not substitute an account number: An ordinary bank account number, card number or merchant QR code may not be a valid address for this corridor.
- Confirm the payee preview: The sender should check the name or other payee details shown in the Indian app before authorising payment.
Do not post your identifier publicly. Send it privately to the person paying you and verify that both of you are discussing the same amount and currency.
One-time consent is required
NCHL states that both sender and recipient must provide one-time consent for cross-border transfers. The consent may appear as a prompt in the participating app or be handled through instructions from the bank or payment provider.
There is no documented, universal Nepal-side menu sequence. The labels and location can differ by institution, app version and account type. If you cannot find the consent prompt, contact your provider rather than repeatedly trying random settings. Ask specifically how to enable cross-border UPI–NPI receiving for your account.
How to receive a transfer: step-by-step
- Check Nepal-side eligibility. Confirm that your bank or payment app appears on NCHL’s current participating list and that it supports inbound India-to-Nepal transfers for your account type.
- Confirm your receiving identifier. Ask the provider whether your mobile number, VPA or both can be used. Record the exact value the provider shows.
- Complete recipient consent. Approve the one-time cross-border consent when your provider requests it. If the provider requires a separate activation request, follow its instructions before the sender pays.
- Send the details privately. Give the sender only the approved mobile number or VPA and, if requested, the name displayed by your provider. Never send a password, PIN, one-time password or authentication code.
- Have the sender use an eligible Indian channel. The sender must initiate the payment from a participating Indian bank app or non-bank payment app that offers the India–Nepal corridor.
- Ask the sender to verify the payee screen. Before confirmation, the sender should compare the displayed recipient details with the information you supplied.
- Keep the receipt and reference. The sender should save the confirmation screen, transaction reference, amount, date and time. You should retain those details if the credit is delayed.
- Check your Nepal account or app. Look for the actual incoming credit in the enabled account or payment profile. A sender-side “successful” message is not, by itself, proof that your balance has been credited.
What the sender must do correctly
The sender’s side is as important as the recipient’s setup. The sender should use an Indian bank or TPAP that expressly displays the Nepal corridor, select the cross-border option rather than an ordinary domestic UPI payment, and enter the approved Nepal mobile number or VPA. Before authorising, the sender should compare the payee name or other confirmation details with the information you supplied.
The sender should also review the amount, exchange or currency display, any fee shown by the app and the final debit account. A transaction can be addressed correctly yet remain unavailable if the amount exceeds the institution’s current limit or the sender has not completed the required cross-border consent. Do not ask the sender to bypass an error by entering a different recipient identifier unless your Nepal provider confirms that identifier is valid.
Transfer limits, timing and fees
India-to-Nepal limit
NCHL’s current India UPI service page lists a maximum of INR 200,000 per transaction for India-to-Nepal transfers. The same page shows no monthly cap for that direction. Limits and eligibility can change, so the sender should rely on the amount permitted in the current Indian app at the time of payment.

Expected timing
NCHL describes the linkage as real-time and available 24×7. That describes the service design, not a guarantee that every transaction will appear instantly during an outage, compliance review, maintenance event or institution-side delay.
A real-time service can therefore still show a pending state. The sender’s debit, the cross-border network record and the recipient’s posted credit may not update at precisely the same moment. Wait for the status to settle before attempting another payment, and keep the first reference available for tracing.
Fees
For an India-to-Nepal transfer, NCHL directs senders to check the applicable charge with their Indian bank or payment app. The fee shown by the sender’s institution is the relevant figure for an inbound remittance.
NCHL lists a flat NPR 240 fee for the opposite Nepal-to-India direction. That amount must not be treated as the fee for receiving money from India.
How to compare participating options
There is no universal best bank or app. Compare the options using the details that affect whether the payment will work:
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Participation | Whether the Indian sender’s bank or TPAP and your Nepal institution are both currently enabled. |
| Direction | Whether your Nepal institution receives India-to-Nepal transfers, rather than only supporting another direction. |
| Identifier | Whether your profile accepts a mobile number, VPA or both, and the exact formatting required. |
| Consent | Where each app requests one-time cross-border approval and whether activation must be completed before payment. |
| Limit and fee | The current permitted amount and the charge displayed by the sender’s institution. |
| Status and support | Where transaction history appears and which bank or provider handles disputes and tracing. |
These checks are more useful than choosing an app based only on its brand. NCHL may add institutions, and an app’s menus or eligibility rules can change after an update.

The sender should open the participating Indian bank or payment app used to initiate the transfer and inspect its transaction history. NPCI’s general UPI guidance says transaction history contains past and pending transactions and that users can check status or raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app.
Exact labels vary. Look for entries such as History, Transactions, Payments, Pending, Failed or Help/Dispute. Open the specific payment and note:
- the status shown (for example, successful, pending or failed);
- the transaction reference or receipt number;
- the amount and date/time;
- the recipient details displayed by the app; and
- any reversal or refund message.
A pending item should not be treated as completed. Do not send a duplicate payment simply because the first status is taking time to update.
How the recipient checks whether money arrived
- Open the Nepal bank or payment app that was enabled for receiving.
- Check the account balance and the incoming transaction list, not just a push notification.
- Open the transaction details and compare the amount, sender information and posting time with the sender’s receipt.
- Save a screenshot or statement entry if you need to open a support case.
NCHL does not publish one universal Nepal-side status-screen path or a guaranteed notification format for India-to-Nepal recipients. Your provider may show the credit in a bank statement, wallet ledger, transaction history or another screen. The account ledger is the authoritative place to confirm that funds were actually posted.
If the app shows a notification but the ledger does not show a credit, treat the payment as unconfirmed. Refresh the transaction list, sign in again through the official app if necessary, and ask the Nepal institution to verify the posting rather than relying on a screenshot of a notification alone.
What each status usually tells you
Successful: The sending app has accepted and completed its side of the payment. The recipient should still verify the Nepal ledger. If the ledger remains unchanged, both institutions need the reference to trace the transaction.
Pending: Processing has not reached a final state. Do not repeat the transfer or assume that a debit will immediately be reversed. Keep monitoring the same transaction record and follow the sending institution’s support process if it does not resolve.

Information to gather before contacting support
- Sender’s full name and the participating Indian bank or app;
- recipient’s full name and Nepal institution;
- the transaction reference or receipt number;
- amount and currency;
- date and time, including time zone if relevant;
- the mobile number or VPA used; and
- screenshots showing the sender-side status and any error message.
Share these details only through the institution’s official support channel. Never disclose a UPI PIN, app password, one-time password or card security code to a caller claiming to investigate the transfer.
Who should be contacted?
For an India-to-Nepal issue, the sender should first raise the case with the Indian bank or payment app that shows the transaction. The recipient should separately notify the Nepal bank or payment provider that should have received the funds. Providing the same reference to both sides helps them match records.
NPCI’s general UPI FAQ advises customers to contact their bank’s customer support if confirmation has not arrived within one hour. This is general UPI guidance, not a Nepal-corridor service-level promise; an institution may apply a different investigation timeline.

Receiving money requires an identifier, not your authentication secrets. A legitimate sender needs the mobile number or VPA that your provider designated for receiving. No sender, bank representative or support agent should ask for your UPI PIN, login password, one-time password, card PIN or full security credentials to release a remittance.
Use only the official bank or payment app and the support contacts published by the institution or NCHL. Do not install a screen-sharing application at someone else’s request, click an unsolicited payment link or scan a QR code to receive a supposed refund. A QR scan can authorise a payment out of your account; it is not required simply to receive this P2P remittance.
Check the sender identity and the payee details displayed on both sides. If the name does not match, stop and ask the provider to clarify before authorising. Keep receipts privately because they contain transaction information, and redact sensitive details if you must share a screenshot publicly.

Common mistakes that prevent a successful receipt
Using a non-participating Nepal account
A standard account at an institution outside the enabled list may not accept the remittance. Verify participation and inbound direction before sharing details.
Giving the wrong identifier
A typo in the mobile number or VPA can direct the sender to a different profile or produce a failed lookup. Copy the identifier from the provider’s own screen and have the sender verify the payee preview.
Skipping cross-border consent
Both sides must provide one-time consent. A sender may be able to start a payment while the recipient has not completed the required activation, leaving the transaction pending or unsuccessful.
Assuming a merchant QR works
Merchant QR acceptance and P2P remittance are separate services. Use the recipient identifier supported by your bank or app, not a shop’s QR code.

Relying only on a notification
Notifications can be delayed or missed. Confirm the credit in the account or app ledger and keep the sender’s reference.
Sending a second payment too quickly
A pending transaction may later complete or be reversed. A duplicate attempt can create two debits or two investigations. Check the original status and speak with the sending institution before retrying.
Assuming the reverse-direction fee applies
The NPR 240 figure published by NCHL is for Nepal-to-India transfers. It does not establish an inbound India-to-Nepal charge. The sender must use the fee shown by the Indian institution.
Before anyone sends money: a practical checklist
- Confirm the Nepal institution currently receives India-origin UPI-linked remittances.
- Ask which mobile number or VPA is valid for your profile.
- Complete the one-time cross-border consent.
- Check the sender’s Indian app for the corridor, permitted amount and displayed fee.
- Stay available while the sender verifies the payee details.
- Record the transaction reference, amount and timestamp.
- Check the Nepal account ledger after the sender authorises payment.
- Keep the sender’s receipt until the credit is visible and reconciled.
What is established—and what can change
The launch date, P2P nature, supported identifier types, consent requirement, participating Nepal institutions and INR 200,000 transaction ceiling come from NCHL, NPCI and India’s Press Information Bureau statements available as of 13 October 2026. Participant coverage, app labels, limits, fees and compliance checks are operational details that institutions can change. Reconfirm them immediately before sending a large or time-sensitive remittance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I receive a UPI remittance in Nepal?
Yes, if your Nepal bank or payment app participates in the NPI–UPI P2P corridor and your account is enabled for inbound India-to-Nepal transfers. Ordinary account ownership alone is not enough.
What do I share with someone sending money from India?
Share the mobile number or VPA that your participating Nepal provider specifically enables for this service. Do not substitute an ordinary account number, card number or merchant QR code.
Do both people need to approve anything?
Yes. NCHL says the sender and recipient must each provide one-time consent for cross-border transfers. The app prompt and menu path vary by institution.
What is the India-to-Nepal transfer limit?
NCHL lists up to INR 200,000 per transaction and no monthly cap for that direction on its current service page. The sender should rely on the limit displayed in the current app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I check whether my UPI transfer reached Nepal?
The sender should inspect transaction history in the Indian bank or payment app. The recipient should check the Nepal account balance and ledger. A sender-side success message or push notification alone does not prove that funds were posted.
What fee applies when receiving money from India?
The applicable India-to-Nepal charge must be checked with the sender’s Indian bank or payment app. NCHL’s NPR 240 figure is for the opposite Nepal-to-India direction.
What if the sender sees successful but I have no credit?
Do not repeat the payment. Give the Indian sender and your Nepal provider the transaction reference, amount, date and time, identifier used, and screenshots so both institutions can trace the payment.
How long should I wait before contacting support?
The service is described as real-time and 24×7, but delays can occur. NPCI’s general UPI FAQ says to contact the bank if confirmation has not arrived within one hour; this is general guidance, not a Nepal-specific guarantee.
Can I use a Nepal merchant’s UPI QR code to receive a remittance?
No. Merchant QR acceptance is a separate person-to-merchant payment service. P2P remittances use the mobile number or VPA supported by the recipient’s institution.
Which Nepal institutions are currently listed for receiving?
NCHL lists Everest Bank, Global IME Bank, Himalayan Bank as receiving only, Machhapuchchhre Bank, Nabil Bank, Nepal SBI Bank, NMB Bank as receiving only, and connectIPS. Confirm current status directly because participation can change.
The Bottom Line
To receive an India-origin UPI remittance in Nepal, use a participating Nepal institution, confirm the exact mobile number or VPA it supports, complete one-time cross-border consent, and have the sender verify the payee before paying. The listed ceiling is INR 200,000 per transaction. Check the sender’s transaction history and your Nepal account ledger, not just a notification. If the credit is missing, do not duplicate the payment: give both institutions the reference and use NCHL’s published support contacts.
