How to Rebuild Broken Icons in Windows 10 (Desktop and Taskbar Fixes)

To rebuild broken desktop or taskbar icons in Windows 10, restart Windows Explorer, delete the current user’s IconCache.db from an elevated Command Prompt, and start Explorer again. This refreshes the shell’s icon cache without reinstalling your applications. Save open work first because Explorer will be stopped briefly.

Use the narrower fix when the symptom is limited to hidden desktop icons, missing standard system icons, one app, or an unpinned taskbar item. A cache reset is most appropriate when shortcuts remain present and launch normally but their pictures are blank, generic, or stale.

Identify the symptom before deleting the cache

Windows uses Explorer to display desktop shortcuts, Start-menu entries, pinned taskbar items, and notification-area icons. A damaged or stale cache can make several application icons appear blank even though the programs still open. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies the IconHandler registry subkey as a possible cause of blank application shortcuts, so deleting the cache is not a universal repair for every icon problem.

  • Blank icons that still launch: the executable is probably present, while the displayed icon or cache entry is wrong. Use the cache-reset procedure below.
  • Every desktop icon appears to be gone: first check whether Windows is hiding desktop icons. Do not delete the cache until that setting has been verified.
  • Only This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, or another standard icon is missing: restore it through Desktop icon settings.
  • One application has a blank icon: repair or reset that app, and check its shortcut, before treating the whole shell.
  • A taskbar icon is absent: the app may simply be unpinned, or a notification-area icon may be hidden.

The choices differ in scope and risk:

Fix Best match Invasiveness Privilege Reversibility
Show desktop icons All desktop icons are hidden Visibility toggle Standard settings Easily reversible
Desktop icon settings Missing standard Windows icons Visibility/settings change Standard settings Easily reversible
Delete IconCache.db Several application icons are blank or stale Restarts Explorer and rebuilds cache Elevated Command Prompt Windows recreates the cache
App Repair or Reset One app’s icon or installation is affected App-specific; Reset can remove app data Standard settings Repair is less disruptive; Reset is not fully reversible for app data

Rebuild the Windows 10 icon cache

These steps follow Microsoft’s documented reset sequence. They affect the signed-in user’s local icon cache and do not reinstall programs.

  1. Save your work. Windows Explorer will be ended and restarted. Close or save any File Explorer windows and other work that depends on the Windows shell.
  2. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
  3. End Explorer. On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer, then choose Restart if that command is available. For the documented command-line sequence, select Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose End task. The desktop and taskbar may disappear temporarily.
  4. Open an elevated Command Prompt. In Task Manager, select File > Run new task. Type cmd.exe, select Create this task with administrative privileges, and choose OK. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks.
  5. Move to the local profile folder. At the prompt, enter the following command exactly, then press Enter:
    CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal

The /d switch also changes drives if your profile is not on the current drive.

  6. Delete the cache database. Enter:
    DEL IconCache.db /a

The /a option allows the command to include files with attributes that would otherwise prevent a normal deletion.

  7. Start Explorer again. Return to Task Manager and choose File > Run new task. Type explorer.exe and press Enter. The desktop, taskbar, and File Explorer shell should return.
  8. Check the result. Look at the affected shortcuts and open several of them. If the shell does not redraw immediately, perform a normal Windows restart after saving your work.

What success looks like

Microsoft describes the result this way: “This process clears the icon cache and restores the display of your taskbar icons.” In practice, Windows creates a fresh cache as Explorer loads. A blank icon that now displays correctly, while its application continues to launch as before, was consistent with a cache or presentation problem.

If the command reports a problem

  • “Could Not Find” or a similar missing-file message: there may be no IconCache.db at that moment. Continue by starting explorer.exe again and restart Windows; the cache can be recreated when the shell loads.
  • Access denied: verify that you selected Create this task with administrative privileges, and that the prompt is operating in your own profile’s AppDataLocal directory. Do not delete files from another user profile unless you have deliberately signed in as that user and understand the impact.
  • The taskbar stays missing: use Task Manager’s File > Run new task command to launch explorer.exe manually. A normal restart can refresh the shell if it does not redraw immediately.

Show desktop icons when Windows is hiding them

If all desktop icons vanished at once, the cache may be innocent. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, choose View, and ensure Show desktop icons is checked. This setting controls visibility; changing it does not delete shortcuts or reinstall applications.

After enabling the option, wait for the desktop to redraw. If icons return, no cache reset is needed. If the option was already checked and application icons remain blank, use the cache procedure rather than repeatedly toggling visibility.

Restore standard Windows desktop icons

Windows treats This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, and Control Panel as selectable desktop icons. Their absence is handled in the theme settings, not by deleting IconCache.db.

  1. Open Settings > Personalize > Themes.
  2. Select Desktop icon settings.
  3. Check the standard icons you want to display.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

This change is easily reversed by clearing the same checkboxes. It does not affect ordinary application shortcuts.

Repair one application’s icon

When only one app has a blank or generic icon, use the app-specific controls first. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, open Advanced options, and choose Repair when that option is available.

Repair is designed to correct that app without the broader shell reset. If Repair does not help, Microsoft recommends trying Reset. Availability varies by application, and Reset can remove the app’s stored data, preferences, or sign-in state. Treat it as a second-line, app-specific action and make sure you can restore any important data before selecting it.

If the app launches but its shortcut alone is wrong, right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and confirm that its target still points to the intended executable. A cache reset cannot repair an icon resource that is damaged inside the executable itself; repairing, updating, or reinstalling that particular application may then be necessary.

Check taskbar and notification-area settings

A missing taskbar symbol does not always indicate a broken cache. An app can be unpinned while still installed, and Windows can hide notification-area icons behind its overflow menu.

  • For an unpinned app, open it from the Start menu, right-click its running taskbar button, and choose Pin to taskbar.
  • For a system-tray symbol, select the notification-area arrow to view hidden icons. Taskbar settings also let you choose which notification icons are visible.
  • If several pinned application icons are blank but their programs open, return to the cache-reset procedure instead of recreating every pin manually.

Why rebuilding the cache may not solve the problem

The reset changes the current user’s local icon cache only. It does not reinstall an application, repair a damaged icon file embedded in an executable, or automatically correct every registry association. Microsoft notes that the IconHandler registry subkey can also be involved in blank shortcuts. Persistent problems limited to one app therefore point toward that app’s repair or installation rather than repeated cache deletion.

Use the symptom’s scope to decide what to do next: visibility settings for hidden icons, Desktop icon settings for standard Windows symbols, App Repair or Reset for one application, and the cache reset for a shell-wide display problem. Avoid editing registry keys simply because an icon is blank; an incorrect registry change can create a broader association problem.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for the operating system. The icon-cache steps above remain the built-in Windows 10 procedure, but a continuing shell problem should also be considered in the context of an unsupported system and the security implications of staying on it.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and app-crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
