Request replacements from LEGO when the set and problem qualify—especially a newly purchased set—then source retired or unavailable elements individually through a parts marketplace or compare the cost with a complete used set. Reassemble in instruction order and verify the finished inventory before calling the set complete.
1. Identify the exact set before you buy anything
“LEGO Lord of the Rings” is a theme, not a single inventory. Sets released under the theme have different parts, colors, minifigures, stickers, and instruction sequences. A wrong set number can produce a completely wrong parts order, even when the model looks similar.

Find the set number on the original materials
- Check the lower corner of the box, usually beside the piece count and age range.
- Look on the cover or title page of the original instruction booklet.
- Search any purchase record, photograph, or storage label for a four- or five-digit number.
LEGO’s missing-piece process starts with the set name or number. Have that identifier ready before opening a replacement request at LEGO’s Missing Pieces page.

Do not identify a set from a generic search for “Lord of the Rings LEGO parts.” Compare distinctive features instead: the shape of a tower or wall, unusual weapons, printed elements, animal molds, minifigure torsos, and the color pattern of the largest subassembly. A reliable set catalog can narrow the candidates, but confirm the complete model and minifigures before ordering parts. BrickLink’s catalog of Lord of the Rings releases is one place to compare set records, including its 2013 listings at BrickLink’s Lord of the Rings 2013 set list.

Separate a new-set defect from an old incomplete set
A newly opened set with a missing or broken element is treated differently from a retired set bought secondhand. LEGO’s damaged-piece guidance is specifically written for brand-new sets and may require the damaged element for inspection or a receipt. An older, incomplete, or previously built set is not automatically covered by the same replacement promise. Record where the set came from and approximately when it was opened; that information determines which route is realistic.
2. Recover the correct building instructions
Use LEGO’s official Building Instructions search and enter the set number. When a guide is available, the digital PDF is the safest reference because it shows the exact sequence, submodels, part colors, and quantities used in that edition. LEGO says its instructions library contains thousands of complete guides as free PDF downloads. Its page for set 9473 identifies The Mines of Moria, released in 2012 with 776 pieces, and provides the corresponding instructions: LEGO instructions for set 9473.
Download and preserve the PDF
- Open LEGO’s Building Instructions search.
- Enter the complete set number, including any leading digits.
- Check the title, theme, year, and model image against your set.
- Download the PDF and save a copy with the set number in the filename.
- Use the PDF on a tablet or computer while keeping loose parts in trays.
If you need a paper booklet, availability is conditional. LEGO’s help article states, “All instructions can be downloaded for free in PDF format,” and explains that a replacement paper copy can be supplied only “as long as they’re still available.” See LEGO’s guidance on replacing missing or damaged building instructions.
Check for edition differences
Use the guide that matches the exact set number rather than a similarly named edition, promotional bundle, or regional listing. A small numbering difference can represent a different inventory. If the PDF contains several booklets, download all of them; a missing submodel guide can make a complete parts pile appear unusable.
3. Inventory the set you actually have
Inventorying means comparing your physical elements with the parts list for that exact set, not merely counting bricks. Record three attributes for every shortage: the element or part number, the color, and the quantity needed. Also mark whether an element is absent, cracked, badly discolored, or structurally unreliable.

Sort before you count
- Spread the parts on a clean, well-lit surface.
- Separate minifigures, weapons, animals, printed pieces, transparent elements, large plates, and ordinary bricks.
- Group similar shapes by color, then compare each group with the set inventory.
- Keep questionable pieces in a separate “inspect” tray instead of silently counting them as usable.
- Write down quantities as you go; memory is unreliable when several pieces look alike.
Use a set-specific inventory
BrickLink’s record for The Mines of Moria set 9473-1 exposes both the inventory and a wanted-list path: BrickLink’s 9473-1 catalog entry. Open the record only after confirming that 9473 is your set. Rebrickable can also show only the pieces you are missing and transfer them to a BrickLink Wanted List; its set-page format is illustrated by the Mirkwood Elf Guard 30212-1 page.
Distinguish a missing element from a damaged one
- Missing: the required element is not present anywhere in your sorted parts.
- Damaged: it is present but cracked, bent, chewed, heavily warped, or so loose that the model will not hold together.
- Uncertain: it looks different because of lighting, printing, or age; compare it with the instruction image and catalog description before replacing it.
Do not substitute a similar-looking color or mold at the inventory stage. A dark-gray weapon, a black weapon, and a printed weapon may all fit physically while representing different elements in the finished set.

4. Choose the replacement route
Use the route that matches the set’s age, your evidence of purchase, and the exact elements needed. The delivered cost includes shipping, and neither availability nor delivery time is universal.
| Route | Best fit | Exact-part coverage | Cost and timing factors |
|---|---|---|---|
| LEGO replacement service | Missing or damaged elements in an eligible, especially newly purchased, set | Only elements currently available through LEGO’s regional service | Follow the country-specific form; stock, eligibility, inspection, and delivery are not guaranteed for retired licensed sets |
| Individual-part marketplace | Retired, licensed, unusual, or color-specific elements | Can target the exact element, color, condition, and quantity listed | Compare seller terms, shipping, minimum orders, and the delivered total |
| Complete used set | Many missing parts, rare minifigures, or several distinctive elements | Potentially restores the whole inventory at once, subject to the seller’s condition claims | Compare the delivered set price with the cost of your missing-parts cart; there is no universal cheaper option |
Use LEGO’s service first when the case fits
LEGO separates missing pieces, damaged pieces, and buying individual pieces on its Replacement Pieces page. For a new set, the missing-piece request should include a complete description, the element ID from the parts list at the back of the instructions, and the set number. Submit one request per set when the regional form requires it, and keep photographs or a receipt available if the service asks for them.
For a damaged element, read LEGO’s damaged-pieces guidance before submitting. It is explicitly framed around brand-new LEGO sets. A cracked part from a decades-old set, a piece damaged during a move, or a missing element in a secondhand purchase may fall outside that process.

Understand older-set and licensed limitations
Retired Lord of the Rings sets contain licensed minifigures, printed elements, molds, and colors that may no longer be produced. LEGO’s replacement help topics explain current limitations, and LEGO Canada notes on its Canadian replacement-parts page that it does not offer repairs and that only some replacement parts are available. Check the policy for your country rather than assuming that a part shown in an old instruction PDF remains in stock.

For unavailable elements, search a secondary marketplace by the exact part number and color from your inventory. A catalog entry is not proof of live stock: sellers, condition, quantity, and shipping change continually. Build the wanted list first, then inspect each listing and remove any automatic substitutions that do not match the required element.
When to price a complete used set
A complete used set deserves comparison when you are missing many pieces, several minifigures, or one-of-a-kind printed and molded elements. Add the delivered prices of the exact replacement elements, including shipping, then compare that figure with complete-set listings. Check the seller’s photos and inventory claims; “complete” can exclude instructions, stickers, accessories, or a minifigure unless the listing defines completeness.
5. Build an exact shopping list
Turn your inventory into a list that another person could fulfill without guessing. For every line, include:
- Set number and set name.
- Part or element ID.
- Official color name or the catalog color.
- Quantity required.
- Condition required, such as new, used acceptable, or undamaged.
- Whether the piece is structural, cosmetic, printed, transparent, or a minifigure accessory.
Verify look-alike parts
Compare the element’s geometry, not only its thumbnail. Lord of the Rings models often use visually similar masonry, slope, hinge, bar, and weapon elements. Check stud count, connection type, thickness, print placement, and whether the instructions show a left- or right-handed version. If the catalog gives separate IDs for two colors or mold variants, treat them as separate lines.

Calculate the delivered total
Do not judge a listing by its per-piece price alone. Add item prices, seller minimums, handling fees, and shipping to your country. A cheap single element can become expensive when it requires a separate order; consolidating several exact parts from one seller may reduce shipping, while buying an incorrect color creates a second order and delays the rebuild.
Inspect sellers and listings
- Confirm that the seller’s color name matches your inventory, not merely the photograph’s lighting.
- Read the condition definition and return terms.
- Check that the quantity in the cart covers every missing copy.
- Look for notes about cracks, stress marks, fading, smoke exposure, or replacement stickers.
- Record the order number and expected dispatch date so missing shipments can be traced.
6. Rebuild the model without creating new damage
Once the replacement elements arrive, keep them separate from the main pile until their instruction steps. This makes it possible to confirm that each new piece is used in the intended location.
- Clear a stable, well-lit workspace and keep drinks, pets, and loose hardware away from the model.
- Open the official PDF to the first page and identify the bags or submodels shown for that section.
- Build in instruction order, pausing whenever a required element is absent rather than improvising a substitute.
- Place each replacement part beside the relevant step before pressing it into the model.
- For minifigures, verify torso print, head, hair or helmet, legs, and accessories against the guide.
- Do not force a cracked element onto a stud, bar, hinge, or axle. Replace it; excessive force can damage neighboring pieces.
- After each major subassembly, compare orientation, symmetry, and connection points with the PDF.
- At the final page, compare unused parts with the inventory. A few intentional spare elements may remain, but an unexplained structural or minifigure part indicates an earlier error.
Check stability before display
Lift the model only from strong, connected sections. Test doors, hinges, towers, wall sections, and removable submodels gently. If a section separates, return to the most recent instruction step and check for a missing plate, reversed hinge, or part with the wrong thickness before adding glue or modifying the design.

The set number is uncertain
Pause ordering. Photograph the distinctive build and minifigures, compare multiple catalog records, and confirm the piece count or release year. The 9473 example is specifically a 2012 set with 776 pieces; those facts help identify that set but cannot identify every Lord of the Rings model.

The PDF model looks right but the parts list does not
Check that the instruction number and catalog suffix refer to the same set. Bundles, regional packaging, and similarly titled sets can have different inventories. Recheck color names and printed variants before reporting a shortage.

LEGO rejects or cannot fulfill the request
Read the regional explanation and determine whether the set is retired, licensed, secondhand, or outside the new-set damaged-piece policy. Keep the rejected element’s ID and quantity; those details become your marketplace search terms. Do not assume that a refusal means the part is impossible to find elsewhere.
A marketplace listing has the right shape but the wrong color
Remove it from the cart unless the instruction step explicitly permits that color. Lord of the Rings scenes rely on dark earth tones, metallic weapons, transparent effects, and printed details that can be visually distorted by photographs. Search the catalog ID and color together.
The rebuilt model has leftover parts
Compare each leftover with the official spare-parts pages and the last steps you completed. Set aside known small spares, then inspect every unexplained plate, clip, bar, weapon, and minifigure accessory. If a structural element remains, disassemble back to the first step where its color or shape appears and rebuild from there.
A replacement part does not fit
Check for a mold variant, incorrect thickness, hidden crack, or a part installed upside down. Never widen a connection, trim a piece, or force a stressed joint to make an incorrect element fit; obtain the exact part instead.
8. A worked identification example: set 9473
If your box or instructions identify set 9473, LEGO’s official record names it The Mines of Moria, lists 776 pieces, and dates the set to 2012. Start with the official guide at the 9473 instruction page, then use a set-specific catalog such as BrickLink’s 9473-1 record to inspect the inventory and create a wanted list. Mark every absent or damaged element by ID, color, and quantity. Because this is a retired licensed set, check LEGO’s current regional availability first, then compare exact-part listings or a complete used set if distinctive elements are missing.
9. Keep a rebuild record for future repairs
Save the set number, PDF filename, inventory spreadsheet, order receipts, seller names, and photographs of the completed model. Label any spare or non-original substitutions clearly. This record prevents a future owner from repeating the identification work and makes it easier to distinguish original elements from later replacements.
What “complete” should mean
- The model follows the official instructions for the exact set number.
- All required structural, printed, transparent, minifigure, and accessory elements are present and undamaged.
- Any remaining pieces are confirmed intentional spares or documented non-required elements.
- Replacement elements are recorded so future restoration decisions are transparent.
The reliable sequence is identification, instructions, inventory, eligibility check, exact sourcing, and careful reconstruction. Skipping the set-specific inventory is the mistake most likely to waste money, because it turns a precise replacement job into a collection of plausible but incompatible parts.
