Then reproduce the build failure, trace each missing reference to its source, and restore only inputs you are authorized to use. A decompiler may reveal code or asset references without recovering the original assets, plugins, SDKs, or project details needed for a complete build.
Why a decompiled game may not build
A decompiled project is not necessarily a complete project. It may contain recovered code or scenes but lack original binary assets, source assets, plugins, SDKs, engine components, configuration, or dependency metadata. A project can also fail because it is being opened with an incompatible engine or toolchain, or because a runtime asset was not included in the packaged build.
First identify what kind of input is missing. An absent generated cache is different from a missing original asset; a compile-time dependency is different from a file that the running game tries to load. Treat the first actionable error in the build log as a lead, not as proof that every subsequent problem has the same cause.
Rebuild in a controlled sequence
1. Preserve and inventory the recovered files
- Work on a copy. Keep the recovered tree unchanged so you can compare it with later attempts or revert a migration.
- Record the starting point. Note the decompiler or recovery tool and its version, the input file identity, the target platform if known, the expected engine version if known, and the exact build command.
- Sort the project contents by purpose. Separate source code, assets or asset containers, project configuration, plugins, dependency manifests, build inputs, and generated output. Do not assume every engine uses the same folder names.
For example, Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 directory-structure documentation describes Content as project content such as assets and maps, Source as game source, Config as project settings, and Plugins as project plugins. It identifies Intermediate and Saved as generated directories. That layout is an Unreal example, not a universal checklist: an absent generated directory is not by itself evidence that an original game asset is missing.

2. Identify the engine and compatible toolchain
Look for project descriptors, engine-version files, configuration, build scripts, assembly or project files, plugin metadata, and recognizable asset formats. Use the engine’s documentation to match those clues to a compatible editor, SDK, compiler, and platform toolchain. Record the versions you select rather than changing several at once.
Preserve the original project state before opening and saving it with a newer engine. Engine and serialized-asset compatibility can be version-sensitive. Epic’s Unreal documentation describes multiple compatibility and versioning systems; it also warns that code and content made for the continually updated ue5-main branch may not work with public releases. If a source checkout is needed, use the engine’s supported branch and setup instructions for the project’s intended version.

3. Reproduce the failure before editing
- Run the build once without changing project data.
- Save the complete log, exact command, environment details, and engine version.
- Find the first actionable missing-file or unresolved-dependency error.
- Classify it as a source/build dependency, a runtime or packaged asset, or a reference used only by development tooling.
- Make one targeted change, then rebuild and compare the next error with the original.
This gives each change a clear test: if the error disappears, the fix addressed that failure; if it moves or remains, you have evidence to investigate the next cause rather than layering guesses.
4. Trace the missing reference
Follow the missing path or identifier back to the code, scene, package, or generated asset that uses it. Open the relevant file or asset in the engine when possible. Search the project for the exact filename, path, or identifier; for a runtime load, add diagnostic logging or use a breakpoint around the load operation to learn which code path requests it.

Open 3D Engine’s asset-bundling documentation describes several causes worth distinguishing: a product dependency may not have been declared, code may load an asset by a hardcoded path or ID that ordinary dependency discovery does not detect, or an apparent missing reference may belong to an editor-only asset unused by the release build. The documentation recommends breakpoints, additional logs, and searching project files for the relevant reference when investigating such cases.
5. Fix the dependency using the engine’s packaging rules
If the reference is required, declare or include it through the engine’s supported dependency and packaging mechanism. In Open 3D Engine, the documented options include updating a builder to emit a product dependency, adding a referenced file as a seed when a hardcoded load cannot be replaced, or declaring wildcard or path loads in dependency metadata. These are O3DE mechanisms, not instructions to apply unchanged to another engine; use that engine’s own manifests and packaging workflow.

If investigation confirms that a reference is editor-only and unused in the release build, do not treat it as a missing runtime asset. Verify the release build’s actual behavior and packaged contents before excluding it from release-focused investigation.
6. Recover only authorized inputs
Search sources you are entitled to use: an authorized original installation, project backups, source-control history, official modding SDKs, publisher-provided archives, and documented engine dependencies. Compare recovered files with those authorized sources rather than filling gaps with unrelated copies. If an original asset is unavailable, a substitute or recreated asset may help with testing, but record that change; it does not establish that the original project has been restored.

A Godot Mod Loader Wiki guide describes recovery using Godot RE Tools, but that is a Godot-specific approach, not a universal extraction method or proof that recovered output is complete. The guide also cautions against sharing game assets or source without explicit permission.
7. Verify the rebuilt package
- Run representative flows that load the scenes and content involved in the original failure.
- Check logs for unresolved dependencies and inspect the packaged asset list against the references you traced.
- Test on the intended target platform, not only in the editor or development environment.
- Keep an inventory of substituted or recreated content so the build is not mistaken for a byte-identical original.
A successful compile confirms that the build completed; it does not by itself prove that all runtime assets were restored or that every game flow works.

Check permissions before sharing a rebuild
Whether you may decompile, modify, or distribute a particular game or recovered material depends on the title’s terms, the engine license, platform rules, jurisdiction, and intended activity. There is no universal legal answer established by the examples here. Unity’s Editor Source Code Terms, updated June 30, 2026, describe limited rights that depend on subscription and constrain particular uses; they do not determine the rights for another game. Check the actual applicable terms and local law before publishing or sharing rebuilt source or assets. This is practical caution, not legal advice.
