Do not treat a Sensex or Nifty correction as proof that the market has reached a bottom. Treat it as a prompt to compare your current portfolio with the asset mix you chose for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Rebalancing means making measured changes to restore that intended mix—not automatically buying more equities, selling debt, or trading because an index moved.
This guide explains a repeatable process for Indian investors. It is educational, not a personalised investment recommendation. Tax rules, product terms and suitability depend on your circumstances; consult a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser when you need individual advice.

What a correction changes—and what it does not
A fall in the Sensex or Nifty changes market prices. It does not, by itself, change your financial goal, retirement date, emergency-fund requirement or ability to tolerate losses. Your equity allocation may become smaller because share prices fell, while debt or cash becomes a larger share of the total portfolio. Alternatively, a correction may leave your weights close to target if you hold substantial assets outside equities.

A correction is a review trigger, not a trading signal
There is no single fall in the Sensex or Nifty that should trigger every investor to trade. A percentage that feels modest to a young investor with decades before a goal could be unacceptable for someone drawing income next year. A correction can therefore justify a portfolio review, but the review may conclude that no trade is needed.
Rebalancing is different from buying the dip
Buying the dip means increasing an asset because its price has fallen, often with an expectation of a rebound. Rebalancing increases or reduces an asset because its weight differs from a written target. The same transaction can serve both descriptions, but the decision test is different: rebalancing asks whether the portfolio still fits the plan, not whether the market is about to rise.
Step 1: Write down the target before looking at the latest headline
Use a written target allocation for the whole portfolio. At minimum, list the intended percentages for equity, debt or cash, and any other asset categories you deliberately use. Define what belongs in each category; for example, decide whether a particular hybrid product is counted as equity, debt or a separate allocation under its scheme documents.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Record the purpose and time horizon of each goal. A retirement goal 20 years away can usually withstand more equity volatility than a tuition payment due next year, but the appropriate mix still depends on your capacity and willingness to take risk. Keep emergency cash separate if you do not intend to expose it to market movements.
Include every relevant account
List holdings across demat accounts, mutual-fund folios, employer plans, deposits and other investments. A portfolio that looks balanced in one account can be equity-heavy when all accounts are combined. Note the owner, goal, tax status, lock-in, liquidity and nominee details for each holding so the target can be implemented without creating an avoidable access problem.
Write the reason for the allocation
For each target, state the goal date, the loss you could financially and emotionally withstand, and the role of the asset. This short investment policy note prevents a dramatic index day from silently replacing a deliberate plan.
Step 2: Measure drift in percentage points and rupees
Calculate each asset class as a share of the current portfolio, then compare it with the target. Use both measures:

- Current weight: current value of the asset class divided by current total portfolio value.
- Percentage-point drift: current weight minus target weight.
- Rupee drift: current value minus the amount required at the target weight of the current total portfolio.
For an illustration, suppose an investor has a ₹10 lakh portfolio with a target of 60% equity, 30% debt or cash and 10% other assets. After an equity correction, the holdings are ₹5.2 lakh equity, ₹3.8 lakh debt or cash and ₹1 lakh other assets. The current weights are 52%, 38% and 10%. To restore the target using the current portfolio value, the investor would need ₹6 lakh in equity and ₹3 lakh in debt or cash. That is an ₹80,000 shift from debt or cash to equity, before considering taxes, exit charges, spreads and liquidity.
| Asset class | Target weight | Illustrative current value | Illustrative current weight | Amount at target on ₹10 lakh | Rupee difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equity | 60% | ₹5.2 lakh | 52% | ₹6 lakh | Underweight by ₹80,000 |
| Debt or cash | 30% | ₹3.8 lakh | 38% | ₹3 lakh | Overweight by ₹80,000 |
| Other assets | 10% | ₹1 lakh | 10% | ₹1 lakh | At target |
The example is a calculation method, not a suggested allocation. Your target may be materially different, and values can change while you are deciding what to do.
Step 3: Re-check whether the target still suits you
Before placing an order, test the plan against your current life rather than against the index chart.
- Goals and dates: Has a home purchase, education expense, retirement date or other objective moved closer or become larger?
- Emergency liquidity: Can you meet essential expenses without selling a volatile asset at an inconvenient time?
- Risk tolerance: Would another substantial fall cause you to abandon the plan, or can you continue the required holding period?
- Risk capacity: Could your income, debt obligations or dependants make a paper loss financially dangerous?
- Tax and account changes: Have you changed tax residence, crossed a holding period, incurred a lock-in, or opened an account with different rules?
- Diversification: Is one company, sector, fund category or asset class now dominating the portfolio?
A correction may reveal that the old target was too aggressive, not that the current equity weight is too low. Change the target only for a documented change in circumstances or a considered review—not because a headline is frightening or a rebound is being predicted.
Step 4: Choose a rule for when and how to rebalance
Two common approaches are a calendar review and an allocation-band rule. A calendar rule checks the portfolio on a set schedule, such as a chosen annual or semiannual date. It is simple and makes monitoring less dependent on emotions, but a large drift can persist until the next review. An allocation-band rule checks whenever an asset moves outside a pre-set range around its target. It responds to drift sooner, but requires reliable valuations and discipline.
You can combine them: review on a calendar date and also review after a documented band breach. The band must be chosen in advance for each goal and should account for trading costs, taxes, liquidity and the risk that frequent small trades create. There is no universal retail trigger prescribed by SEBI Investor; the rule should fit your written objectives.
Do not use the index percentage as your trigger
The Sensex and Nifty are market indices, not measures of your personal allocation. Your portfolio may include debt, cash, international exposure or concentrated holdings that move differently. A correction of any particular size can leave your weights unchanged, or can create a large drift if your equity exposure is concentrated. Measure your own holdings first.

Step 5: Implement with the least disruptive cash flow
When an asset is underweight, first consider directing new money toward it. Route future systematic contributions, dividends, interest or maturing deposits to the underweight category until the target is closer. This can reduce the need to sell and may avoid an immediate taxable event or exit charge.
When selling is necessary
If cash flows cannot correct the drift within the period your plan allows, sell an overweight holding and buy the underweight asset in a controlled sequence. Check the product documents and your account before submitting an order:
- Income-tax treatment and holding-period rules for the specific security or fund.
- Exit loads, early-withdrawal penalties, bid-ask spreads, brokerage and other transaction costs.
- Settlement timing and whether the proceeds will be available when the purchase is placed.
- Lock-ins, minimum balance requirements and restrictions on switching.
- Whether selling creates a short-term liquidity gap for a goal or emergency reserve.
Execution can be staged when a single transaction would create an avoidable tax bill, market-impact concern or liquidity problem. Staging is a risk-management choice, not a promise that prices will improve.
Keep the order of operations explicit
- Identify the overweight and underweight categories from your calculation.
- Check taxes, charges, lock-ins and settlement for the exact holdings.
- Use available contributions or maturing money first where that remains consistent with the target.
- Place only the trades required to bring the portfolio back within your written rule.
- Save contract notes, statements and the calculation used for the decision.
Should you buy more equity after a Sensex or Nifty fall?
Buy more equity only when the purchase is consistent with your target allocation, goal horizon and ability to tolerate further losses. A lower price does not establish that a correction is over. Ask these questions in order:
- Is equity below the target or outside the band in your complete portfolio?
- Has the goal date and your risk capacity remained compatible with that target?
- Can emergency needs and near-term spending be met without relying on this equity?
- Will the purchase leave enough diversification rather than increasing a concentrated position?
- Have you checked taxes, charges and product suitability?
If the answer to the first question is no, buying solely because an index fell is a market-timing decision, not rebalancing. If the answer is yes but the target no longer suits your circumstances, revise the plan first instead of automatically adding risk.
Should you sell debt and move it into equity?
Moving debt or cash into equity can restore an underweight equity allocation after a fall, as in the illustrative calculation above. It is appropriate only if the debt allocation is genuinely above the target and the money is not reserved for an imminent obligation or emergency reserve.
Do not empty the defensive portion that stabilises the portfolio. Debt and cash can provide liquidity and reduce the need to sell equities during a deeper decline. Review credit quality, duration, interest-rate exposure, deposit terms and the role assigned to each holding before deciding that all debt is interchangeable.

If your risk tolerance, income stability or goal horizon has changed, retaining or increasing debt may be the correct strategic decision even when equity prices look cheaper. The purpose of rebalancing is to restore suitability, not to maximise exposure to the asset that recently fell.
Taxes, costs and liquidity can change the best trade
Two portfolios with identical weights can have different rebalancing costs because their holdings, account types and holding periods differ. Estimate the tax consequence of each sale using the rules that apply to that security or fund, and retain records needed for your return. Product documents and your broker, fund house or tax professional can confirm current treatment; do not assume that a switch is tax-free.
Include exit loads, brokerage, exchange charges, spreads, deposit penalties and any fee for switching or redeeming. A tiny drift may not justify a taxable sale when new contributions can correct it. Conversely, ignoring a large drift because a sale feels uncomfortable can leave the portfolio exposed to a risk you no longer intend to take.
Liquidity is a separate test from return. Money needed on a known date should not be placed in an asset merely because its recent price decline appears attractive. Maintain the emergency reserve and goal-specific cash requirements stated in your plan.

SEBI’s mutual-fund framework for a passive breach of a scheme’s mandated asset allocation generally gives applicable schemes 30 business days to restore compliance, subject to the category and scheme provisions. A later SEBI disclosure describes 30 calendar days for short-term defensive deviations in the cited scheme context.
Those timelines govern scheme managers and the particular regulatory or scheme circumstances described in the documents. They do not instruct every individual investor to buy or sell within 30 days after a Sensex or Nifty correction. Your own review schedule, target bands, tax position and liquidity needs remain separate decisions.

|---|---|---|
| Passive breach of a mutual-fund scheme’s mandated allocation | A generally applicable 30-business-day compliance period in the cited 2022 framework, subject to scheme and category provisions | A universal deadline for a retail investor to rebalance a personal portfolio |
| Short-term defensive deviation in the cited scheme disclosure | A 30-calendar-day period described for that specific context | A signal that the market will recover, or a rule for all schemes and investors |
How to compare possible rebalancing plans
When more than one implementation is feasible, compare the plans against the same decision axes rather than choosing the one with the most dramatic trade.
Best Value
| Decision axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Target fit | Does the result return each asset class to the written target or inside its permitted band? |
| Risk and drawdown tolerance | Could you continue the plan through another fall without abandoning it? |
| Time horizon | Will the allocation match the date when the money is needed? |
| Diversification | Does the plan avoid excessive exposure to one company, sector, issuer or asset class? |
| Liquidity | Can you access required cash without forced selling or penalties? |
| Tax impact | What taxable gains, losses or holding-period consequences will each sale create? |
| Transaction and exit costs | Are spreads, brokerage, loads, penalties and switching charges proportionate to the drift? |

A complete worked process for the illustrative portfolio
Return to the ₹10 lakh example only to see the workflow in sequence. The investor’s written target is 60% equity, 30% debt or cash and 10% other assets. Current values after a correction are ₹5.2 lakh, ₹3.8 lakh and ₹1 lakh.
- The investor records the 52%, 38% and 10% current weights and the percentage-point drift from target.
- The investor confirms that the retirement goal remains long term, the emergency reserve is outside this portfolio, and the 60% equity target still matches risk capacity.
- The investor checks the exact debt holding for exit terms and the equity purchase for costs and suitability.
- Available new contributions are considered first. If they cannot correct the drift within the chosen rule, the investor evaluates an ₹80,000 transfer from the overweight debt or cash category to equity.
- The investor records the date, target, calculation, orders, taxes and charges, then schedules the next review.
If the investor had discovered a nearer goal or a lower capacity for loss, the correct outcome could instead be a revised target with more debt or cash. The index decline does not decide that question.
Monitoring after the trade
Save a one-page record containing the target allocation, the rule used, the goal and time horizon, the holdings included, the valuation date, the reason for the action, expected costs, actual execution and post-trade weights. Include a note about any deliberate exception, such as a holding reserved for a near-term payment.
Recommended Free Tools
At the next planned review, update values and repeat the calculation. Review sooner after a major life event, a change in income or debt, a goal-date change, a large withdrawal, or a change in the terms of a product. Monitoring is a control process; it is not a requirement to react to every daily index move.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using a headline as the allocation plan: calculate portfolio weights instead of reacting to the index level.
- Assuming every fall is an opportunity: buy only when the target, horizon and risk capacity support the added exposure.
- Selling the entire debt reserve: preserve liquidity and the defensive role assigned to debt or cash.
- Ignoring taxes and exit charges: estimate product-specific consequences before ordering.
- Counting one account only: consolidate all relevant holdings and owners for each goal.
- Confusing fund-manager compliance with personal advice: the mutual-fund 30-day provisions do not set a retail trading deadline.
- Changing the target after every correction: revise it only after a deliberate suitability review.
- Leaving no written record: document the rule so the next decision is consistent rather than emotional.
When a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser can help
Consider professional advice when you cannot define a suitable target, several accounts or family members must be coordinated, a major life change has altered your goals, or tax and product rules make implementation difficult. Verify that the person or firm is registered with SEBI as an Investment Adviser, and ask how conflicts, fees, scope and record-keeping are handled.
An adviser can help structure a plan and explain trade-offs, but no adviser can guarantee returns or eliminate market risk. You remain responsible for confirming that recommendations match your goals, liquidity needs and documented tolerance for loss.
Portfolio-rebalancing checklist
- Written equity, debt or cash, and other-asset targets.
- Goal, time horizon, emergency reserve and risk-capacity review.
- Current values and weights across every relevant account.
- Percentage-point and rupee drift from target.
- Pre-set calendar or allocation-band rule.
- Contribution-first option considered.
- Taxes, exit loads, spreads, brokerage, penalties and liquidity checked.
- Only the trades required by the rule executed.
- Target, rationale, date, costs and post-trade weights recorded.
- Next review date scheduled.
Bottom line
After a Sensex or Nifty correction, compare your actual portfolio with your written target and then decide. Buy more equity only when it restores a suitable allocation; sell debt only when it is genuinely overweight and no longer needed for liquidity or a goal. A measured, documented rebalance is more defensible than a market-bottom guess, and the right action may be to make no trade at all.
