First confirm that your target mix still fits your goal, time horizon, financial situation and willingness and ability to take risk. If it does, compare your current percentages with the target and act only when your preset calendar, drift threshold or combined rule says to act. Use new contributions, dividends and interest for underweighted categories before selling, and check taxes and trading costs before placing orders.
That process separates two decisions investors often confuse: whether the plan is still appropriate and whether the portfolio has drifted away from that plan. A rally or selloff can change prices without changing your objective. Rebalancing is risk control, not a reliable way to predict which asset will deliver the highest return next.

What rebalancing actually changes
A portfolio’s target allocation is the percentage assigned to each broad category, such as stocks and bonds. Suppose the written plan calls for 60% stocks and 40% bonds. If stocks rise faster than bonds, the portfolio might become 68% stocks and 32% bonds without you buying anything. Your exposure to stock-market losses is now higher than the plan intended.
Rebalancing moves the actual percentages back toward the chosen targets. It does not require forecasting the next market move, and it does not make a loss disappear. The objective is to keep the portfolio’s risk aligned with the goal. Vanguard’s investor guidance states it plainly: “The purpose of rebalancing is to manage risk, not maximize returns.”

Allocation and rebalancing are separate decisions. A change in your retirement date, emergency-reserve needs, income stability or tolerance for losses can justify a new target. Ordinary relative performance by itself is not evidence that the target should be changed.
Decide whether the plan still fits before touching investments
Do this review before calculating a trade. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) emphasizes that no single allocation is right for every goal. A target should reflect:
- Goal: Identify what the money is for and when it will be needed.
- Time horizon: A near-term spending need generally cannot absorb the same market swings as a goal several decades away.
- Risk tolerance: Consider how much volatility you are willing to endure.
- Risk capacity: Consider how much loss your finances can withstand without forcing a bad sale.
- Financial circumstances: Account for changes in income, debt, savings, dependents or planned withdrawals.
Ask one pause question: Has my goal, time horizon, financial situation or risk tolerance changed—or has the market price simply moved? If your circumstances changed, review the allocation as a planning decision. Do not disguise a new target as a routine rebalance.
Choose a rule while you are calm
Write the trigger, the review date and the action you will take before volatility tests your resolve. Three approaches are commonly used:
| Method | What triggers action | Useful trade-off | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar-based | A preset review date, such as once a year | Simple to remember and follow | You may trade when drift is small or allow drift between reviews |
| Threshold-based | A category moves beyond a preset tolerance from its target | Responds to actual drift rather than an arbitrary date | Requires monitoring and can be burdensome for an individual |
| Combined | A scheduled review occurs, but trades happen only when drift exceeds the chosen band | Regular check-ins with action tied to meaningful drift | The band must suit your plan and implementation |
| Cash-flow rebalancing | Contributions, dividends or interest arrive | Can reduce selling, transaction costs and realized gains | It works only when cash flows are large enough to reduce the gap |
Vanguard says an annual rebalance suits many investors and stresses that an easy-to-follow schedule matters. The SEC describes six- or twelve-month intervals as common recommendations. Neither statement is a universal prescription. A threshold rule may be sensible for someone who can monitor reliably; a simple annual date can be better than a theoretically precise rule that is repeatedly ignored.
Set the rule in percentage points, not in emotional language. For example, you might write, “Review every December and rebalance if any major category is more than five percentage points from target.” The number in that sentence is an example of a personal policy, not a rule established for all investors. Choose a tolerance you can follow after discussing your circumstances with a qualified professional if needed.

A low-emotion rebalancing procedure
- Record the target mix and its reason. Write the percentages, the account or goal they serve, the date chosen and the conditions that would make you reconsider them. Do not set targets from a recent market forecast.
- Fix the review date and trigger. Put the calendar date and any drift band in the same document. Decide in advance whether the rule applies to each category, to the whole portfolio or to both.
- Freeze news-driven decisions. On the review date, use account statements or a portfolio view to collect current values. Do not open the process by reading predictions or changing the rule to fit the latest headline.
- Check the plan first. Confirm that the goal, time horizon and risk profile are unchanged. If they are not, stop the mechanical rebalance and make a separate allocation decision.
- Calculate actual weights. For each category, divide its current value by the total portfolio value. Compare that percentage with the written target in percentage points. A category at 57% against a 60% target is three percentage points underweight.
- Apply the written trigger. If the drift does not meet your rule, record “no trade” and return to the next review date. If it does, determine the smallest practical adjustment that brings the portfolio back within policy.
- Use incoming cash first. Direct new contributions, dividends or interest toward underweighted categories when your account and plan permit it. This can move the mix without selling an appreciated holding.
- Choose the least disruptive trade. If cash flows cannot close the gap, consider a partial adjustment rather than automatically restoring every category to an exact percentage. Review transaction fees and account-specific tax effects before submitting orders.
- Document the action. Save the date, starting weights, target weights, cash flows, trades, costs and reason. Note whether the rule was followed or why a documented exception was necessary.
- Stop until the next trigger. Repeatedly checking prices after the trade invites a new emotional decision. Return to the schedule unless your personal circumstances change.
Worked example: an 80/20 portfolio that drifts to 85/15
Investor.gov uses a simple illustration. An investor starts with 80% stocks and 20% bonds. After a year, market performance leaves the portfolio at 85% stocks and 15% bonds. To restore the original percentages, the investor could sell five percentage points of stocks and use the proceeds to buy bonds.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The arithmetic describes the direction of the transaction, not a recommendation to hold an 80/20 portfolio. Before selling, the investor should check fees and tax implications and consider whether available contributions or income can address part of the five-point gap. If the written rule allows a partial rebalance, an adjustment smaller than five points may be sufficient to bring the allocation back inside the permitted band.
How to handle a market drop without panic selling
A market decline can make the stock percentage fall below target, while a rally can make it rise above target. Neither event automatically changes the target. Apply the same pause question and the same precommitted trigger in both directions.
- If the plan still fits: Wait for the scheduled review or threshold event, then rebalance according to the rule.
- If the plan no longer fits because your life changed: Reassess the target allocation separately; do not call an emergency sale a rebalance.
- If you cannot tolerate the planned loss: Treat that information as a risk-tolerance finding for future planning, not as proof that the day’s price is a reliable signal.
Vanguard’s behavioral guidance treats periodic rebalancing and avoiding panic selling during volatility as examples of disciplined behavior. Discipline lowers the chance of an improvised decision; it cannot guarantee a positive result or eliminate regret.
Use cash flows before selling
Contributions, dividends and interest provide a natural way to move an underweight category closer to its target. Directing the next contribution to bonds, for example, may reduce an equity overweight without creating a sale. This method is most useful when the cash flow is meaningful relative to the gap and when the account’s investment choices allow the direction to be specified.

Cash-flow rebalancing does not mean ignoring a large drift indefinitely. Compare the resulting percentages with your written threshold at each review. If the gap remains outside policy, a trade may still be required.

Taxes, fees and account location
Before trading, identify the account type and the consequences of selling a specific holding. A sale can create a taxable gain or loss in an account where sales are reportable; transaction fees or fund expenses can also reduce the amount available for the adjustment. The applicable result depends on the account, holding period, cost basis and local rules, so use the account’s tax information and seek qualified tax advice for individual circumstances.
Compare the friction of a trade with the risk of leaving the portfolio outside policy. That comparison should be part of the rule you write, not an excuse invented after a volatile week. In some cases, a partial rebalance or directing several future cash flows to the underweight is a reasonable way to reduce the gap while limiting costs.
What the calendar, threshold and combined methods can and cannot tell you
These methods differ in administration, not in their ability to predict returns. A calendar schedule is easy to automate and audit. A threshold responds to the portfolio’s actual drift but requires current weights and monitoring. A combined method avoids acting merely because a date arrived, while still creating a regular review habit.

Vanguard’s target-date-fund analysis includes provider illustrations that should not be converted into personal prescriptions. In a hypothetical 50/50 portfolio illustration from March 2020, a monthly calendar approach could drift 7% from target, while a 200-basis-point threshold approach did not drift more than plus or minus 2%. Those figures describe that modeled fund strategy and period; they do not establish that a 200-basis-point band is best for an individual.
The same analysis modeled a hypothetical portfolio of 60% global equity and 40% global fixed income using historical index returns for the 10 years ending March 2023. Historical modeling can show how a rule behaved in that dataset; it cannot forecast your future returns, taxes or ability to follow the rule.

- Separate accounts by goal. Do not let a dramatic move in a long-term account dictate a short-term spending decision.
- Use a one-day pause. After calculating a trade, wait until the next business day to submit it unless a documented account constraint requires faster action.
- Require a second check. Have a spouse, partner or adviser verify the percentages and tax notes when a trade is unusually large.
- Limit review frequency. Investor.gov cautions against obsessing over a portfolio or making drastic changes without considering long-term goals.
- Keep an exception log. If you skip or alter a rebalance, write the specific life event, cost or account restriction that caused the exception.
- Automate only the rule you understand. Automatic investing can direct new money, but automation does not decide whether your target allocation remains appropriate.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Changing the target after every rally
Problem: The best-performing category is treated as a permanent winner. Fix: Revisit targets only after a goal, horizon, financial situation or risk assessment changes. Relative performance alone is not a planning event.
Trading on a headline instead of a trigger
Problem: A news story creates a new threshold or an unscheduled sale. Fix: Record the headline, then apply the existing rule at the next permitted review. If the story reveals a genuine change in your circumstances, handle that as a separate planning review.
Rebalancing every holding individually
Problem: Many small trades create unnecessary costs and complexity. Fix: Look first at the portfolio-level category weights and use the smallest practical set of trades or cash flows.
Ignoring contributions and income
Problem: An investor sells an appreciated asset even though new money could reduce the drift. Fix: Route available contributions, dividends and interest to underweights before selling, while still checking whether the resulting allocation meets the rule.
Copying a provider’s threshold
Problem: A threshold used in a managed target-date fund is treated as a universal retail standard. Fix: Treat provider examples as illustrations and choose a policy consistent with your own monitoring ability, costs, taxes and risk plan.
Calling a changed plan a rebalance
Problem: A new retirement date or lower risk capacity is handled as if it were ordinary drift. Fix: Document the new circumstances and set a new allocation deliberately before implementing it.

How often should you review?
There is no single schedule established for every individual. The SEC describes six- or twelve-month intervals as common recommendations, while Vanguard says an annual rebalance suits many investors. A once-a-year review is often easier to follow than a more frequent policy that leads to unnecessary trades or constant checking.
A threshold can reduce calendar-driven trades when drift is small, but it increases the need to monitor weights. A combined rule—review on a set date and act only when a chosen band is exceeded—offers a middle path. Compare any rule on five dimensions: the drift you will accept, ease of following it, monitoring burden, trading and tax friction, and the amount of cash flow available to correct underweights.
When professional help is appropriate
General education cannot determine your suitable allocation or the tax result of a particular sale. Consider qualified financial or tax advice when you are selecting an initial allocation, coordinating several account types, facing a large taxable gain, planning withdrawals, or coping with a major life change. Check an adviser’s credentials and disciplinary history before engaging one. You remain responsible for understanding the rule and the trades authorized on your behalf.
A one-page policy you can maintain
Keep the following information together with your statements:
- Goal and expected spending date
- Target percentage for each investment category
- Reason the target fits your horizon and risk profile
- Review date and drift trigger
- Order of operations: cash flows, partial trades, then fuller adjustment if needed
- Tax and fee checks required before a sale
- Person who verifies an unusually large transaction
- Date of the next review and the exception-log location
At each review, complete the checklist once, record the decision and stop. If the plan still fits and the rule says “no action,” doing nothing is a successful result.
Bottom line
Emotional rebalancing is usually a symptom of an unwritten policy. Write the target and its purpose, choose a calendar, threshold or combined trigger in advance, verify that your life has not changed the plan, and use cash flows before selling. Then execute the smallest practical adjustment after considering taxes and costs. This keeps the portfolio tied to the goal instead of to whichever market move feels most urgent.
