When growth stocks and bonds fall at the same time, rebalance only after checking two things: whether your target allocation still fits your goal and risk tolerance, and whether your actual percentages have crossed a rule you chose in advance. A joint decline is not, by itself, a reason to abandon stocks, add bonds, or predict a quick rebound.
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back to its chosen mix. You can direct new contributions to the underweight sleeve, redirect recurring deposits, or sell overweight holdings and buy the underweight assets. Compare taxes, trading costs, account rules, and the size of the drift before choosing a method.

What rebalancing is—and what it is not
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines rebalancing as bringing a portfolio back to its original asset-allocation mix. The objective is risk control: restore the amount of stock, bond, and other exposure you intended to own. It is not a forecast that the asset that fell will recover next, and it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
A target such as 70% stocks and 30% bonds is a policy choice tied to a goal, time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, income needs, and overall financial situation. Market performance changes the percentages around that target. Rebalancing reverses that drift when your written rule says to act.

Why growth stocks and bonds can decline together
The traditional stock-and-bond relationship is not a permanent law. A common inflation shock can push expected policy rates and market yields higher. Higher yields generally reduce the present value assigned to long-dated corporate cash flows, which can weigh particularly heavily on companies whose expected profits are far in the future. At the same time, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall when newly issued bonds offer higher rates.
That mechanism helps explain the 2022 episode described by Vanguard: inflation-fighting rate increases pressured equity valuations while bond yields rose and bond prices fell. Vanguard characterized the period as an unusual degree to which global stocks and bonds fell together. The explanation is a broad market mechanism, not a prediction for every growth company, fund, maturity, or future rate cycle.
“Growth stocks” is not a separate asset category in the SEC material used here. Growth companies differ in profitability, valuation, leverage, sector, and duration of expected cash flows, so they will not all react identically to rates. Likewise, a bond holding can contain government, corporate, inflation-linked, short-term, or long-term securities with very different risks.

First decide whether your target still fits
Do not rewrite an allocation merely because one sleeve has recently performed better or because a single sell-off was painful. Review the target as a strategic decision when your circumstances or objective change materially.
Questions to answer before trading
- What is the money for, and has that goal changed?
- When will you need to spend the money? A shorter horizon usually leaves less time to recover from a large decline.
- Has your ability to take risk changed because of employment, debt, emergency savings, health, or expected income?
- Can you tolerate the size and duration of a loss without abandoning the plan?
- Do your income needs require more predictable cash or bond exposure than before?
- Have tax circumstances, account types, or withdrawal plans changed?
If the answers still support the existing target, treat the simultaneous decline as a market event and apply your rebalancing rule. If the answers point to a different need, set a new strategic allocation first; then rebalance toward that new target rather than mechanically returning to an outdated one.
Measure drift with percentages, not headlines
List each holding and calculate its current market value as a percentage of the whole portfolio. Compare those percentages with the target. A market decline in both sleeves can still create drift if one falls more than the other, if contributions have gone to one side, or if a previously overweight position remains overweight after the fall.

For an illustrative $100,000 portfolio with a 70/30 target, suppose stocks are now $76,000 and bonds $24,000. Stocks are 76% and bonds 24%, so the portfolio is six percentage points away from the target in each direction. Whether that triggers action depends on the policy you wrote, not on the fact that both dollar values declined.
Use a consistent calculation method. Include all accounts that are governed by the same investment policy, or document why a particular account is excluded. Do not mix a percentage-of-total rule with a dollar threshold without writing down how the two interact.
Choose a review trigger you can follow
Investor.gov notes that some investors review on a regular calendar, such as every six or 12 months, while others use a preset percentage band. Vanguard’s rebalancing guide illustrates a five-percentage-point band around a 70/30 example. That illustration is not a universal prescription. The best rule is one you can apply consistently and infrequently enough to avoid turning every market move into a trade.
| Trigger | How it works | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar | Check on a set date, such as every six or 12 months. | Simple to schedule and explain. | You may trade when drift is tiny, or wait while drift grows between dates. |
| Threshold | Trade only when a sleeve moves beyond a written band, such as five percentage points. | Connects action to the size of the risk change. | Requires monitoring and a clear definition of the band. |
| Hybrid | Check on a calendar and act only when a threshold is breached. | Combines administrative simplicity with a drift test. | Still requires discipline about both the date and the band. |
Vanguard’s historical discussion cautions against both extremely frequent and extremely infrequent rebalancing. The cited material does not establish one optimal interval or band for every investor, account, or tax jurisdiction.
Pick the least costly method that closes the drift
Once your rule calls for action, compare the available routes. The SEC identifies three practical approaches.

|---|---|---|---|
| Use new money | Send fresh contributions, dividends, or other incoming cash to the underweight sleeve. | When contributions are large enough to reduce drift without selling. | How quickly the cash closes the gap and whether the account permits the desired allocation. |
| Redirect recurring contributions | Temporarily change payroll or automatic-investment percentages toward the underweight sleeve. | When regular deposits can restore the mix over several pay periods. | Employer-plan limits, processing dates, and whether the drift is too large to wait. |
| Sell and buy | Sell enough of the overweight sleeve and purchase the underweight sleeve. | When the drift is material or there is little incoming cash. | Transaction fees, bid-ask spreads, taxes, settlement, and account restrictions. |
There is no evidence that one method is best for every account. In a tax-advantaged account, selling may not create the same immediate tax issue as it would in a taxable account, but plan rules and fees still matter. In a taxable account, using contributions first can reduce realized gains, although it may restore the target more slowly.

Step-by-step: rebalance after a joint decline
- Write down the target. Record the stock, bond, cash, and any other sleeve percentages that apply to the account or household policy. If the target is changing because your goal or risk tolerance changed, document that decision separately from the market event.
- Set the review date and trigger. State whether you use a calendar, a threshold, or a hybrid. Define whether the threshold is measured in percentage points of the whole portfolio, relative percentages, or dollars.
- Inventory every holding. Record current values, account type, fund or security category, and any restrictions. A bond fund and an individual bond may have different liquidity, maturity, credit, and tax characteristics.
- Calculate current weights. Divide each sleeve’s value by the portfolio total. Check the arithmetic after any pending contribution, withdrawal, dividend, or trade.
- Identify the smallest workable correction. If the drift is modest, direct new contributions or recurring deposits to the underweight sleeve. If the drift is large, calculate the sale and purchase amounts needed to reach the target rather than trading an arbitrary percentage.
- Check costs and taxes. Review commissions, fund transaction fees, spreads, redemption charges, wash-sale implications where relevant, and the tax basis of positions in taxable accounts. Rules differ by provider, account type, holdings, and jurisdiction; consult plan documents and a qualified tax professional for personal consequences.
- Place trades deliberately. Confirm the correct account, security, share class, order type, and settlement instructions. Avoid replacing a diversified sleeve with a concentrated position simply because it recently fell.
- Verify the result. After trades settle, recalculate the percentages, confirm that contributions are directed correctly, and record the date, reason, amounts, and resulting allocation.
- Stop when the rule is satisfied. Do not keep trading to chase a moving target. The next review occurs on the schedule you selected unless a genuine change in circumstances warrants a strategic review.
Look inside the stock and bond sleeves
Meeting a 70/30 headline does not automatically mean the portfolio is diversified. The SEC recommends diversification across asset categories and within them. A stock sleeve may be concentrated in one country, sector, company, or valuation style. A bond sleeve may be exposed heavily to one issuer, credit tier, maturity range, or interest-rate sensitivity.
| Bond characteristic | What it changes | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity and duration | Longer or more duration-sensitive holdings generally react more to changes in market yields. | Would a rate rise create a decline larger than the portfolio policy assumes? |
| Issuer and credit quality | Corporate and lower-quality bonds add credit and economic-cycle risk beyond government-rate risk. | How much of the bond sleeve depends on issuers remaining financially sound? |
| Inflation exposure | Fixed payments can lose purchasing power when inflation rises; inflation-linked securities behave differently. | Does the planned spending goal require protection against unexpected inflation? |
| Geography and currency | Non-domestic bonds can add country, currency, and policy exposures. | Are those exposures intentional and sized within the policy? |
Broad stock diversification matters for the same reason. Rebalancing a concentrated growth position back to a target stock percentage does not solve concentration inside that percentage. Review the holdings, not only the labels.
What the historical evidence does—and does not—show
Vanguard reported that a typical 60/40 stock-and-bond portfolio declined about 16% in 2022. That figure describes Vanguard’s example, not every portfolio with a 60/40 label; results vary with geography, security selection, duration, fees, and timing.
Another Vanguard analysis examined rolling correlations using S&P 500 and U.S. Treasury 10-year total returns from January 1, 1990 through September 30, 2021. Its longer-term measures remained negative through that data window, while short-term correlations varied substantially. The analysis also modeled a scenario in which inflation averaged 5.7% over the next five years instead of a 2% base case; it said meaningfully positive long-term correlation would require inflation substantially above that base case. Those were historical calculations and a 2021 model, not a current forecast.
| Evidence | Qualification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| About 16% decline for Vanguard’s typical 60/40 example in 2022 | One provider’s example; not a universal 60/40 return. | Shows that joint losses are possible and that a label does not guarantee protection. |
| Correlation analysis through September 30, 2021 | Uses S&P 500 and U.S. Treasury 10-year total returns from January 1, 1990; short-term readings varied. | Supports humility about assuming stocks and bonds always move oppositely. |
| 5.7% modeled inflation versus a 2% base case | Vanguard’s 2021 scenario and forecast, not a current prediction. | Illustrates why inflation regimes can affect the stock-bond relationship. |
These sources do not establish a current October 2026 stock-bond correlation or an independently verified 2026 performance figure. Use current account statements and reliable market data for your own monitoring rather than treating an old correlation chart as a live signal.
Taxes, fees, and account-specific constraints
Rebalancing costs depend on where the assets are held. In a taxable account, selling an appreciated position can realize a capital gain, while selling at a loss can interact with loss-harvesting and wash-sale rules. Holding periods, local tax law, cost basis, and the replacement security all matter. In a retirement or other tax-advantaged account, immediate capital-gains treatment may differ, but trading fees, fund expenses, plan menus, withdrawal rules, and settlement still apply.

Common mistakes when both sleeves are down
Abandoning bonds after one bad year
A joint decline can make bonds appear to have failed. But bonds differ by maturity, credit, and inflation exposure, and one episode does not establish a permanent regime. If the target still fits, apply the rule instead of replacing the policy with a recent-performance judgment.
Buying whichever asset fell most
Rebalancing is not a contest to identify the next rebound. Buy only the underweight exposure required by the policy, after checking diversification and costs.
Changing the target and rebalancing at the same time without a record
Separating the decisions makes it clear whether you changed strategy because your life changed or because prices moved. Record the new objective, risk capacity, and effective date before trading toward a new mix.
Ignoring contributions and withdrawals
Cash flows can create or reduce drift. Include pending deposits, withdrawals, and distributions in the calculation so you do not trade unnecessarily.
Checking too often
Daily monitoring can turn normal volatility into repeated taxable trades and emotional decisions. Use the cadence or threshold you selected and make exceptions only for a genuine change in circumstances.

Assuming a bond fund is cash
Bond funds can lose value when yields rise and can carry credit or duration risk. Match the fixed-income sleeve to the time horizon and spending need rather than treating every bond holding as a stable cash substitute.

Worked decision examples
Small drift with regular contributions
Suppose a portfolio remains close to its target after both stocks and bonds fall, and monthly contributions are large relative to the drift. A threshold rule may not require a sale. Directing new deposits to the underweight sleeve can restore the mix while avoiding a taxable transaction. Recalculate at the next scheduled review; do not assume the plan worked until the percentages confirm it.
Large drift in a taxable account
Suppose the stock sleeve is well above its target and the bond sleeve is below it, while the account contains appreciated stock positions. First estimate the gain and available tax lots, then compare a partial sale, contribution redirection, and staged trades. The least costly path may restore the risk mix over several deposits rather than in one transaction, but that is an account-specific decision.
Changed goal near a withdrawal date
Suppose the money will be needed sooner than planned. A lower-risk target may be appropriate because the horizon and spending need changed. Establish that new target deliberately, consider cash-flow needs and taxes, and then rebalance to it. Do not describe the change as a normal response to a one-day market move.

The SEC says allocation depends primarily on time horizon and risk tolerance. A strategic review can be warranted after a major change in income, debt, family obligations, health, emergency reserves, planned withdrawals, or investment objective. It can also be appropriate when you discover that the original target never reflected your actual ability or willingness to take risk.
Market performance alone is not a sufficient reason to chase the recent winner. If you decide the target must change, write the reason, new percentages, implementation date, and review rule. Treat that as a new investment policy, not as an ad hoc trade layered onto the old one.
A maintenance checklist
- Keep the target allocation and the reason for it in one accessible document.
- Specify the review date, drift band, and whether the band is measured in percentage points.
- List which accounts and holdings are included.
- State whether new contributions are used before sales.
- Record tax, fee, liquidity, and plan-menu constraints.
- Review diversification within stock and bond sleeves.
- Revisit the target after a genuine life or goal change, not merely after a scary headline.
- After every rebalance, verify the resulting percentages and update the record.
A simultaneous fall in growth stocks and bonds is a reminder that diversification reduces but does not eliminate risk. The practical response is to test the target against your life, measure the actual drift, and execute the least costly action your written rule permits.
