If a handful of stocks have driven most of your portfolio’s recent gains, do not rebalance simply because they went up. First compare your current holdings with the asset mix, diversification level and risk you originally intended. If the winners have made one company, sector or asset class larger than your plan allows, bring the portfolio back toward that plan by selling part of the overweight, directing new money to underweight holdings, or combining both approaches. In a U.S. taxable account, check transaction costs, cost basis, capital-gains consequences and wash-sale rules before placing a sale.
The key distinction is between returns and weights: a stock can contribute heavily to past returns without being an inappropriate holding today, while a modestly performing position can still be too large for your risk tolerance. Rebalancing is a risk-management discipline, not a forecast of which stock will rise next.

What it means when a few stocks dominate your returns
“A few stocks dominate my returns” usually describes performance concentration: several holdings produced most of the portfolio’s gains over a period. Rebalancing, however, acts on today’s portfolio weights. You need to know what percentage of the account is now in each asset class, company, sector and fund, then compare those percentages with the allocation that fits your goal, time horizon and tolerance for loss.
Investor.gov defines the process this way: “Rebalancing is bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix.” The original mix is your own plan, not a universal stock-and-bond formula. A long-term retirement account, a house deposit needed in three years and a charitable endowment can reasonably have very different risk limits.

A high return from one company is therefore a signal to inspect exposure, not an automatic sell order. Ask whether the position became large because its price rose, because you added shares, because another asset fell, or because the original plan never specified a limit for individual companies. Those causes affect the practical solution.
Start with the allocation you intended
Write down the purpose of the money
Record the account’s goal, the date or time range when you expect to use it, and the largest temporary loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. Your answers may have changed since the last review. Investor.gov notes that a change in goals or risk tolerance can justify changing the target allocation itself; that is different from rebalancing back to an unchanged target.
Define targets at more than one level
A useful policy can specify percentages for broad asset classes and limits inside them. For example, it might state a target for stocks, bonds and cash, then set a maximum for any one company or sector. It can also identify whether international shares, small companies, real-estate securities or other categories are intended components. Do not copy an example allocation merely because it appears in a guide.

Set the policy before looking at which holding recently performed best. Otherwise, a large gain can make a risky concentration feel normal, while a loss can make a diversified category seem intolerable.
Measure the current portfolio, not just the winners
Inventory every account and security
- Download current positions from each brokerage, retirement plan and cash account.
- For each position, record market value, number of shares, account type, company or fund name, broad asset class, sector and geographic focus.
- Include employer stock, options that create economic exposure, and funds whose top holdings overlap with stocks you own directly.
- Calculate each position’s percentage of the combined portfolio and each category’s percentage of the total.
Use market value for current weights. A position bought cheaply can have a very small cost basis but represent a large share of the account today; cost basis is important for tax planning, not for measuring the portfolio’s present risk.
Separate asset-allocation drift from company concentration
Suppose stocks were meant to be 60% of a portfolio and strong equity markets make them 80%. That 60%-to-80% example appears on Investor.gov as an illustration, not as a recommended allocation or a measured market statistic. It shows why a portfolio can drift even when the investor makes no trades.

Then look inside the 80% stock allocation. If a single technology company is 18% of the entire account, or several funds all own the same companies, the portfolio may have both asset-class drift and concentration risk. Correcting only the stock-versus-bond split would leave the company overlap untouched.
Use a simple drift table
| Level | Target from your policy | Current value | Current weight | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad asset class | Policy percentage | Market value | Value divided by total portfolio | Has the stock, bond or cash mix moved outside the range you can accept? |
| Sector | Any stated limit or intended exposure | Market value across direct holdings and funds | Sector value divided by total portfolio | Are several securities making one industry larger than intended? |
| Individual company | Any stated maximum | Direct shares plus look-through fund exposure where material | Company exposure divided by total portfolio | Would a severe fall in this company threaten the goal? |
If your policy has no company or sector limits, do not invent a precise “correct” number after the fact. Instead, decide what concentration you are willing to accept and document the rule for future reviews.
Three ways to move back toward the target
The choice depends on how large the drift is, how quickly it must be corrected, the size of upcoming contributions and the tax and fee cost of selling.
| Method | How it works | Speed in reducing an overweight | Sale and tax effects | When it can fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sell overweight, buy underweight | Sell part of the oversized holding and use the proceeds to purchase categories below target. | Usually the fastest because it changes existing capital immediately. | Sale commissions or spreads may apply; a taxable sale can realize a gain or loss. | The drift is substantial, the risk is unacceptable, and the tax and cost consequences are manageable. |
| Use new money | Put dividends, transfers or a lump-sum contribution into underweight categories without selling the winner. | Depends on contribution size; small deposits may take a long time to offset a large concentration. | No sale of the winner is required, so there is no gain or loss from that sale; purchases can still have ordinary transaction costs. | You contribute regularly and the current risk is tolerable while the portfolio moves gradually. |
| Redirect ongoing contributions | Change payroll or automatic-investment instructions so new deposits flow disproportionately to underweight categories until weights are closer to target. | Gradual and predictable; the pace depends on contributions and market movements. | Avoids an immediate sale, but does not remove the concentration quickly. | Retirement-plan contributions are frequent and the overweight does not require urgent reduction. |
| Combine methods | Sell enough to address the most serious concentration, then direct future money to the remaining underweights. | Balances immediate correction with gradual adjustment. | Only the sold portion creates a current sale event, but all account-specific costs still apply. | The drift is meaningful but a full liquidation would create unnecessary tax or market-impact costs. |
How to sell a concentrated winner carefully
Decide the destination before the sale
Specify the percentage or dollar amount you intend to move and the underweight categories that will receive it. A sale that leaves the proceeds in cash can change the risk profile in an unintended way. If the goal is to reduce company risk while keeping the same broad stock exposure, the proceeds may need to be spread across several already-planned categories rather than placed in another narrow fund.
Choose tax lots deliberately
Brokerage records normally show purchase date, number of shares, basis and unrealized gain or loss for each lot. Selling the oldest, newest or highest-basis lot can produce different taxable results, but no single lot-selection rule is correct for every investor. Check whether your account uses specific identification, first-in-first-out or another default, and save the confirmation.
In a taxable account, the realized gain or loss is generally based on sale proceeds minus the lot’s adjusted basis, subject to applicable rules. The amount and character can depend on holding period, prior transactions and other facts. A retirement account has different tax mechanics, but it can still contain concentration risk.

Check fees and trading mechanics
Before submitting an order, review commissions if any, bid-ask spreads, fund redemption fees, short-term trading charges and the order type. A market order can execute at a different price than the quote you saw. Some mutual funds price once each business day; exchange-traded securities trade during market hours. These mechanics affect the amount available for the planned purchases.
Investor.gov states: “Before you rebalance your portfolio, you should consider whether the method of rebalancing you decide to use will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences.” Treat that as a pre-trade checklist, not a reason to avoid every sale.
U.S. tax issue: gains, losses and wash sales
This guidance is for U.S. investors; tax treatment elsewhere can differ. A sale in a taxable account may create a capital gain or loss. Review your brokerage’s gain-and-loss report, but verify the basis when shares were transferred, inherited, received through a corporate action or bought in multiple lots. Brokerage reports do not replace your tax records.

The IRS Instructions for Schedule D (Form 1040) (2025) describe a wash sale when you sell stock or securities at a loss and acquire substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before or after the sale. The period therefore spans 61 calendar days around the sale date. The IRS instructions also address acquisitions in an IRA or Roth IRA. Rebuying a substantially identical security in another account can matter even when the new purchase is not in the same brokerage account.
Whether two securities are substantially identical, how a replacement purchase affects basis, and how other transactions interact with the rule are fact-specific. Do not assume that switching to a merely similar fund eliminates the issue, and do not treat a tax-loss sale as a reason to abandon the intended allocation. Check current IRS guidance and consider a qualified tax professional when the amounts are material or your accounts are complex.
Choose a monitoring rule you can follow
Calendar reviews
You can review on a recurring schedule, such as every six or 12 months. Investor.gov presents those intervals as examples some experts advise, not as proof that either is optimal. A calendar review is easy to remember and reduces the temptation to react to daily headlines. At each review, update values, compare them with the policy and trade only if the result warrants it.

Percentage-band reviews
Alternatively, set a drift threshold: review or rebalance when a category is a chosen number of percentage points or a chosen percentage above or below target. The threshold should reflect the portfolio’s volatility, the cost of trading and your willingness to tolerate drift. There is no universally best threshold in the cited guidance.

Many investors combine a periodic review with a threshold. The calendar prevents neglect; the threshold prevents small, unnecessary trades. Whatever rule you choose, write down whether it applies to broad asset classes, individual companies, sectors or all three. Investor.gov says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently, so avoid turning every market move into a transaction.

Across asset classes
Stocks, bonds and cash respond differently to economic conditions, but holding several labels does not guarantee meaningful diversification. Check how much of the portfolio could fall together in a market shock and whether the mix still matches the time horizon.
Within an asset class
Investor.gov’s asset-allocation and diversification guidance emphasizes diversification both within and across asset categories. Owning ten technology stocks may leave you exposed to the same industry factors. A broad fund can spread company-specific risk, but it does not automatically make the whole portfolio diversified.
Look through funds
An exchange-traded fund or mutual fund can be narrowly focused by sector, geography, market segment or theme. The SEC specifically cautions that a narrowly focused fund may not provide the diversification an investor expects. Review a fund’s stated mandate, largest holdings and overlap with your direct positions before counting it as a separate source of diversification.
A decision framework for common situations
The winner is large, but the goal is decades away
First quantify the loss the position could cause and whether you could continue the plan after that loss. If the concentration exceeds your written limit, a partial sale or a combination of sale and new contributions may be appropriate. A long horizon does not make an oversized single-company position automatically safe; it only gives more time to recover from some losses.
Best Value
The winner is in a taxable account with a large unrealized gain
Compare the tax and trading cost of reducing the position with the risk of keeping it. Consider selling in stages, using new contributions to underweights, or coordinating a sale with other realized losses if that fits your tax plan. Staging is a risk-and-tax decision, not a guarantee of a better future price.
The concentration comes from an employer plan
Check the plan’s available funds, trading windows, blackout periods and any rules on employer stock. If new payroll contributions can be redirected, use that feature to reduce future concentration. A plan restriction may require a slower schedule, so document the residual risk rather than assuming it has disappeared.
The portfolio is already below target because markets fell
Rebalancing can require buying an underperforming category. That may feel uncomfortable, but the decision should follow the policy and current risk capacity, not the category’s recent ranking. Verify that your goal and tolerance have not changed before adding risk.

Worked example without a prescribed allocation
Assume an investor’s written policy calls for a particular stock percentage, but a market rally increases the stock portion from 60% to 80%. Those figures are the illustrative example used by Investor.gov; they are not a recommendation. The investor would:
- Confirm that the goal, time horizon and risk tolerance still support the original target.
- Break the 80% stock portion into individual companies, sectors and funds to find any second layer of concentration.
- Estimate the dollar amount that must move to return within the policy’s acceptable range.
- Compare a sale, new contributions and a combination after checking basis, taxes, fees and wash-sale exposure.
- Place only the trades needed to reach the policy, then record the new weights and the next review date.
The example demonstrates the arithmetic of drift; it does not establish that 60% stocks is suitable, that moving all the way back at once is required, or that rebalancing will improve returns.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using performance as the rule. Selling solely because a stock rose can discard a suitable holding; keeping it solely because it rose can leave an unacceptable concentration. Use the target and risk policy.
- Ignoring overlap. A direct holding and several funds may own the same company. Add the exposures before deciding that you are diversified.
- Rebalancing only the account you can see. Include taxable, retirement, savings and employer-plan assets when they serve the same goal, while respecting each account’s rules.
- Forgetting contributions. New money can be a low-friction way to correct modest drift, but calculate whether contributions are large enough to matter.
- Trading too often. Daily adjustments create costs and can turn a risk-control process into market timing. Follow a written calendar, threshold or hybrid rule.
- Treating taxes as the only consideration. Taxes and fees matter, but so does the potential harm of an oversized position. Weigh both sides rather than assuming one always wins.
- Assuming a narrow fund is broad diversification. Read the mandate and holdings; a sector fund can increase the very concentration you are trying to reduce.
- Failing to update the policy. If your life, goal or ability to tolerate loss changed, revise the target first. Rebalancing to an outdated plan can preserve the wrong risk level.
Portfolio rebalancing checklist
- State the goal, time horizon and acceptable risk.
- Write the target percentages and any company or sector limits.
- List all accounts, positions, fund exposures and current market values.
- Calculate current weights and identify both asset-class drift and concentration overlap.
- Estimate the amount needed to return within the policy’s range.
- Compare selling, new-money investing and contribution redirection.
- For any sale, check basis, holding period, lot method, fees and tax consequences.
- For a loss sale, review the IRS 30-day-before-or-after wash-sale rule, including purchases in IRAs and Roth IRAs.
- Place trades or change contribution instructions according to the plan.
- Record the resulting weights, transactions and next review date.
Rebalancing is complete when the portfolio once again reflects the risk and diversification your policy calls for. The fact that a few stocks produced most of the recent return is context for the review, not the decision rule.
