How to Rebalance a Portfolio That Is Too Concentrated in AI Investments

Rebalance an AI-heavy portfolio by measuring your total look-through exposure, setting a target allocation before trading, and reducing the excess with new contributions, staged sales, or both. There is no official “safe” percentage for artificial-intelligence investments. The right amount depends on your goal, time horizon, risk capacity, tax situation, and the rest of your holdings.

Start with a complete inventory rather than selling the most visible AI stock. Several ETFs, a semiconductor fund, a cloud company and a broad index can all own the same handful of businesses. Once you know the overlap, write a target for asset classes, sectors, company sizes and regions, then use a calendar or drift rule to keep the portfolio aligned.

Why an AI-heavy portfolio can be riskier than it looks

Concentration risk is the possibility of amplified losses when a large part of your holdings sits in one investment, asset class or market segment. That is FINRA’s definition, and it applies even when the account statement shows many separate funds. A portfolio can contain ten tickers yet depend on the earnings, valuation and supply chain of the same technology companies.

AI exposure also combines several kinds of risk:

  • Company risk: A single company can lose market share, face a product failure, suffer a cybersecurity incident or encounter regulatory action.
  • Industry risk: Semiconductor cycles, cloud spending, data-center power constraints and changing enterprise budgets can affect many AI beneficiaries at once.
  • Valuation risk: High expectations are already reflected in a share price. A company can report strong growth and still fall if growth is slower than investors expected.
  • Correlation risk: Holdings that appear different may sell off together when investors reduce exposure to growth stocks, technology or long-duration assets.
  • Implementation risk: Rapid trading, wide bid-ask spreads, taxes and emotional decisions can turn a sensible allocation change into an expensive one.

Investor.gov explains that faster-growing holdings can push a portfolio away from its intended mix and that rebalancing restores the original allocation. Rebalancing is therefore a risk-control process, not a forecast that AI will stop developing or that a particular stock must decline.

How to tell whether your portfolio is too concentrated

No regulator or academic source cited here sets a universal maximum for AI exposure. A 5% allocation might be aggressive for a near-retirement investor and modest for a young investor with a long horizon and substantial non-market assets. The useful question is whether a plausible AI-related downturn would prevent you from meeting your goal or cause you to abandon your plan.

Use a loss-impact test

Write down the portfolio value and the amount invested directly or indirectly in AI-related assets. Then model a large decline in that sleeve—such as 40% or 50%—without assuming the rest of the portfolio rises to offset it. Ask:

  • Could you still fund withdrawals, tuition, a home purchase or another goal on schedule?
  • Would the loss force you to sell at an inconvenient time?
  • Could you hold through a multi-year period of underperformance?
  • Is the exposure larger than you would deliberately choose if you were building the portfolio today?

This is a stress test, not a prediction. It helps connect an abstract percentage to your actual risk capacity.

Distinguish intentional conviction from accidental drift

An AI allocation can be intentional when it is a small, explicitly capped satellite position. It becomes accidental when price gains, employer stock, options, fund overlap or automatic contributions push it above the limit you chose. Document the intended role—core, satellite or speculative—before deciding how much to trim.

Step 1: Map every source of AI exposure

Use one spreadsheet for all taxable accounts, retirement accounts and custodial accounts. Record the account type because the same sale can have very different tax consequences in a brokerage account and a retirement plan.

Column What to record Why it matters
Holding and ticker Individual security, ETF, mutual fund, option or employer share Identifies what can actually be traded and whether exposure is direct
Account Taxable, traditional retirement, Roth, workplace plan or other Determines whether a sale creates a current tax bill
Market value Current value, not original cost Calculates the portfolio weight
Cost basis and holding period Lot-level basis and purchase dates where available Shows realized-gain and loss consequences
Fund look-through Top holdings, sector weights, geography and any stated theme Reveals duplication hidden inside funds
Role Core equity, satellite AI, bond, cash or other Lets you compare the holding with the job it is supposed to perform

Count direct and indirect exposure

Count an individual AI company at its full market value. For a fund, inspect the latest holdings and sector breakdown in the prospectus or shareholder materials. Multiply the percentage invested in a company by your position in the fund, then add that amount across every account. Repeat for semiconductor manufacturers, cloud providers, data-center operators and other suppliers only when the fund documents show material exposure; a marketing label is not a precise risk measure.

For example, if a broad fund is 6% in a particular company and you hold $20,000 of that fund, the look-through exposure is $1,200. A second fund holding 4% in the same company adds another amount. Add the direct shares as well. The exercise can reveal that three funds provide less diversification than their names suggest.

Measure concentration at several levels

  • Single-company weight: the largest issuer as a percentage of the entire portfolio.
  • AI and technology weight: direct AI names plus technology-sector holdings that move with the theme.
  • Asset-class weight: equities versus high-quality bonds, cash and other permitted assets.
  • Geographic weight: domestic versus non-domestic companies and the currencies behind them.
  • Factor weight: growth, large-cap and momentum exposure that may overlap even outside technology.

Use the most conservative reasonable classification when a holding spans several categories, and note the assumption in your worksheet. Do not double-count the same security when you report totals; keep separate columns for company, sector and factor exposure.

Step 2: Write a target allocation before you trade

Your target should be based on the goal date, required spending, emergency reserves, income stability, other assets and ability to tolerate losses—not on the recent performance of AI stocks. Set targets for the broad asset classes first, then boundaries within equities.

Define the broad mix

Specify percentages for equities, high-quality bonds, cash and any other asset classes allowed by your plan. A person drawing from the portfolio soon may need more stable assets than someone saving for a goal decades away. Keep emergency cash outside a long-term risk allocation if it serves a different purpose.

Set equity boundaries

Within the equity target, define limits for technology or AI, other sectors, company size and domestic versus international exposure. You can use a maximum for a single company and a separate maximum for the AI theme. The limits need not be identical across accounts, but the combined household portfolio should remain inside the ranges you can tolerate.

Write the decision in plain language

A useful policy statement names the target, the acceptable range and the action that follows. For example: “Keep the AI and closely related technology sleeve between 8% and 12% of investable assets. Review twice a year and rebalance when it moves outside that band, subject to taxes and plan restrictions.” This is an example of process design, not a recommendation for your portfolio.

Step 3: Choose how to reduce the overweight

Investor.gov describes three basic rebalancing methods. You can combine them, especially when selling appreciated positions in a taxable account.

Method How it works Best use Main trade-off
Sell overweight, buy underweight Sell enough of the excess and purchase assets below target Fast restoration when the drift is large or risk is unacceptable May create capital gains, fees and a larger tax bill
Direct new money to underweights Send dividends, salary contributions and cash deposits to lagging categories Gradual correction in taxable accounts or during accumulation Can take a long time if contributions are small
Change ongoing contributions Alter workplace-plan or brokerage percentages until the mix returns to target Regular savers with flexible payroll elections Does not reduce an existing overweight quickly without sales

A blended plan might direct all new contributions to bonds and non-domestic equities, reinvest dividends outside the AI sleeve and sell only the highest-gain or highest-risk lots. In a retirement plan with no current capital-gains tax, an exchange among available funds may be simpler, but the plan’s menu and trading rules still apply.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Step 4: Use a calendar or drift rule instead of headlines

Investor.gov cites a review every six or twelve months as an example. Vanguard illustrates a five-percentage-point drift trigger. These are process examples, not individualized mandates. You can use a calendar, a threshold or both:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Calendar rule: check on the same date every six or twelve months and trade only when the allocation is outside your stated range.
  • Drift rule: act when a category is a set number of percentage points or a relative percentage above or below target.
  • Hybrid rule: review quarterly for data accuracy, but trade only at the semiannual review or when a severe limit is breached.

Record the date, portfolio weights, reason for the trade and the next review date. Do not create an exception because a headline predicts an AI boom or collapse. Vanguard describes rebalancing as staying in sync with long-term goals rather than timing the market.

Step 5: Check taxes, account rules and costs before selling

Taxable brokerage accounts

For each potential sale, identify the unrealized gain or loss, holding period and tax lot. Selling an appreciated position can create a taxable capital gain; selling a loss can have tax value but also requires attention to wash-sale rules if you or a related account buys a substantially identical security around the sale. A tax professional can determine the applicable rules for your country and circumstances.

Compare the tax cost with the risk of remaining concentrated. You do not need to sell every overweight dollar immediately if the tax bill is disproportionate, but a tax concern should not conceal a risk you cannot tolerate. Consider selling across calendar years, using available losses, donating eligible appreciated shares, or directing all new money elsewhere when those strategies fit your situation. Verify eligibility and consequences before acting.

Retirement and workplace plans

Traditional and Roth accounts generally allow exchanges without a current capital-gains bill, but withdrawals, required distributions, plan restrictions and investment menus still matter. Employer stock can involve special tax treatment and employment-related risk. Read the plan’s exchange limits, settlement timing and blackout notices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trading costs and liquidity

Investor.gov notes that rebalancing can trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. Check commissions, fund expense ratios, bid-ask spreads, redemption fees and possible short-term trading charges. Use limit orders only when you understand the risk of not being filled; a market order may execute quickly but at an uncertain price. Avoid trading during a liquidity squeeze merely to hit a decimal target.

Step 6: Choose replacement assets by job, not by another story

The proceeds from an AI sale should fill a deliberate gap. Diversification works both between asset categories and within them; the SEC has warned that a narrowly focused ETF or mutual fund is not automatically diversified.

Portfolio role Possible diversifier Questions to check
Stability and spending ballast High-quality government or investment-grade bonds and cash reserves Duration, credit quality, inflation sensitivity and need date
Broad equity breadth A low-cost fund covering many sectors and companies Top-10 concentration, sector weights, index methodology and fees
Geographic diversification Non-domestic developed and, where suitable, emerging-market equities Country weights, currency exposure, withholding taxes and liquidity
Company-size balance Smaller-company exposure when consistent with the risk plan Profitability, volatility, liquidity and overlap with existing funds
Style balance Value or other non-growth exposure when appropriate Definition, sector tilts, turnover and whether it simply adds another concentrated bet

These are comparison axes, not universal prescriptions. Examine the holdings after look-through, total expense ratio, bid-ask spread, tax efficiency, liquidity and how the investment behaves in a downturn. A “broad” fund can still be dominated by a few mega-cap companies, while a thematic fund can be highly concentrated by design.

Step 7: Execute the rebalance in a controlled sequence

  1. Freeze the baseline. Download current statements, prices, cost basis and fund holdings. Use one valuation timestamp so percentages are comparable.
  2. Calculate current and target dollars. Multiply total investable assets by each target percentage. The difference is the amount to buy or sell, subject to your chosen range.
  3. Prioritize the largest risks. Address a single-company or employer-stock concentration before fine-tuning small sector deviations.
  4. Choose lots and accounts. In taxable accounts, select lots in consultation with a tax professional; use tax-advantaged accounts when that is permitted and consistent with the plan.
  5. Place trades deliberately. Check the security, quantity, order type, price, settlement date and any fund exchange restrictions before submitting.
  6. Direct cash flows. Change payroll elections, automatic investments and dividend instructions so new money does not recreate the overweight.
  7. Recalculate after settlement. Update the spreadsheet with executed prices, realized gains, fees and the new weights. Do not assume an order filled at the quote you saw.
  8. Schedule the next review. Put the calendar date and threshold in a written investment policy or personal finance system.

Worked example: reducing overlap without an all-at-once sale

Assume a $200,000 portfolio has $80,000 in direct AI and related technology holdings, or 40%. The investor’s written policy allows a 15% technology/AI sleeve, with the remainder assigned to broad equities, bonds and cash. The investor also has $2,000 of monthly contributions and large unrealized gains in the direct holdings.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A staged plan could first redirect the $2,000 monthly contribution to bonds and broad non-domestic equities. The investor could then sell the most concentrated company position in a tax-aware lot selection, place the proceeds into the underweight categories, and repeat at the next scheduled review. If the 40% exposure creates an immediate risk to a near-term goal, a larger initial sale may be justified despite the tax cost. The correct choice depends on the investor’s loss capacity and tax analysis, not on a forecast for the next AI earnings season.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Counting tickers instead of exposures

Five funds are not necessarily five independent risks. Correct this by adding look-through holdings and sector weights before deciding that you are diversified.

Using a label as a risk measure

“AI,” “innovation” or “technology” in a fund name can cover very different companies. Read the current holdings and methodology, and date your worksheet because holdings change.

Rebalancing to a recent winner

Buying another high-growth theme to replace an AI position may preserve the same factor risk. Choose replacements for their portfolio role and breadth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes until after the order

Estimate gains, losses, holding periods and fees before submitting trades. Keep a record of the tax lots used and ask a qualified professional about jurisdiction-specific rules.

Over-trading

Constantly chasing a target creates costs and can turn a long-term policy into market timing. A six- or twelve-month review, a stated drift band and documented exceptions are easier to follow.

Failing to update automatic purchases

Even a well-designed sale will be undone if every new contribution buys the same concentrated fund. Change recurring instructions immediately after the rebalance.

Confusing diversification with safety

Broad equity exposure can still fall substantially, and bonds carry interest-rate and credit risks. Diversification reduces dependence on one outcome; it does not remove market risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for AI-investment fraud while you rebalance

A joint alert from the SEC, NASAA and FINRA published January 25, 2024, warned about unregistered platforms, deepfakes, guaranteed returns and pressure tactics tied to AI investing. Treat unsolicited messages, celebrity endorsements, “secret” algorithms and demands for immediate deposits as warning signs. Verify registration independently through the relevant regulator, understand where assets are custodied and refuse requests to bypass normal account controls. Never let fear of missing out dictate a transfer or trade.

When a professional can add value

A fee-only financial planner or registered investment adviser may be useful when you have large embedded gains, employer stock, several account types, a concentrated option position, retirement-plan restrictions or a goal that cannot tolerate a large drawdown. Ask how the professional is compensated, whether they are registered in your jurisdiction, how they handle conflicts and whether they will provide a written investment policy. A tax adviser can model gain realization, charitable strategies and loss harvesting separately from the investment recommendation.

Professional help does not eliminate the need to understand the allocation. You should still be able to explain the target, the rebalancing rule, the expected costs and what would cause a change.

A maintenance checklist

  • Keep a household-level inventory of every account and fund.
  • Update look-through holdings when funds publish new reports.
  • Review AI, technology, single-company, geographic and asset-class weights.
  • Compare the current mix with your written target and drift bands.
  • Direct new contributions and dividends to underweight categories.
  • Before selling, check tax lots, holding periods, wash-sale implications, fees and liquidity.
  • After trades settle, record execution details and realized gains or losses.
  • Review the policy every six or twelve months, or sooner after a major goal, job or risk-capacity change.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

Official investor guidance supports measuring concentration, diversifying between and within asset classes, considering taxes and fees, and using a disciplined rebalancing process. It does not establish a universal safe AI percentage or a reliable forecast for future AI returns. Your allocation is successful when it keeps risk aligned with your goals and remains practical to maintain through both enthusiasm and disappointment.
