Rebalance by first confirming that your target mix still fits your goals, then measure the weight of every asset across every account. Use the least costly method that restores an acceptable risk level: direct new contributions, purchases of underweight assets, or selective sales of overweight holdings. In taxable accounts, estimate gains, losses, holding periods, fees and wash-sale exposure before selling.
A market move can change your risk without any action from you. A rising stock allocation may leave you more exposed to a later decline; a sharp fall may leave you underexposed to the growth assets your plan requires. Rebalancing is a way to return to a written strategy, not a prediction about what markets will do next.

What rebalancing changes after a market move
Rebalancing is the process of buying and selling investments to bring a portfolio back toward its intended asset allocation. The allocation might divide money among stocks, bonds, cash and other assets. Gains and losses alter those percentages even when you do nothing.
Investor.gov gives a simple example: stocks that were 60% of a portfolio can become 80% after a strong market increase. The account is worth more, but its risk profile is also different. A similar effect occurs in reverse after a decline: the asset that fell becomes a smaller part of the portfolio, while assets that held up become larger weights.

The objective is not to sell every winner or buy every loser. It is to decide whether the current mix still matches your ability and willingness to take risk, then make a measured adjustment.
Step 1: Reconfirm your target allocation before trading
Do not automatically restore an old percentage. Your circumstances may have changed since you set it. Investor.gov says allocation may need to change when your risk tolerance, financial situation, time horizon or goals change.
Check the four drivers of the target
- Risk tolerance: How much volatility can you endure without abandoning the plan?
- Risk capacity: How much loss can your finances withstand while still meeting essential obligations?
- Time horizon: When will you need the money, and will withdrawals continue for years?
- Goals and liquidity: Has a purchase, retirement date, emergency reserve or other objective changed the amount that must remain readily available?
If the correct target is now different, write the new target before moving money. Otherwise, you could trade merely to return to an allocation that no longer suits you.
Write the target in actionable terms
Specify the percentage or dollar range for each broad asset category and any limits on individual positions. For example, a plan might identify a stock allocation, a bond allocation and a cash reserve, then state whether certain accounts are intended for particular roles. The target should be clear enough that another person could calculate whether the portfolio is on track.
Step 2: Measure drift across the whole portfolio
Review all relevant accounts before deciding what is overweight. A stock position in a workplace plan, an individual account and an inherited account can together create a concentration that is invisible when each account is viewed separately.
Build one inventory
Record each holding, current value, asset category, account type, tax-lot information and intended role. Calculate each category’s percentage of the combined portfolio:
asset weight = asset value ÷ total portfolio value × 100

Use current market values, not the original purchase amounts. Include cash, bond funds, stock funds, individual securities and other investments that materially affect the allocation.
| Item to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Account and owner | Shows where a trade can occur and whether tax treatment differs. |
| Holding and asset category | Prevents a concentrated position from being hidden inside a broad account label. |
| Current value and portfolio weight | Shows the size of the drift after gains or losses. |
| Target weight | Provides the amount you are trying to restore. |
| Tax lots and holding periods | Shows which sale could create a gain or loss and how long each lot has been held. |
| Fees and trading constraints | Helps compare a sale with a contribution-based adjustment. |
Separate allocation drift from concentration risk
A broad stock allocation can be on target while one company or sector has become an outsized position. Compare both the asset-category weight and the largest individual exposures with your written limits. A concentrated winner can increase risk even if the account balance is higher.
Step 3: Choose an implementation method
The SEC’s investor bulletin identifies three basic methods. You can use one method or combine them with dividends, withdrawals and future deposits.
| Method | How it works | When it can help | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell overweight and buy underweight assets | Sell enough of the overweight category to fund purchases of the underweight category. | When drift is large and you need a prompt correction. | A taxable sale may realize gains or losses and may incur transaction costs. |
| Buy underweight assets with new money | Direct a lump-sum deposit to the underweight category without selling the overweight holding. | When you have available cash and want to defer selling appreciated assets. | It may take substantial new money to close a large gap. |
| Redirect ongoing contributions | Change payroll deposits, automatic transfers or other contributions so new money goes to underweight areas. | When deposits are regular and the drift is manageable. | The portfolio may remain outside target while contributions accumulate. |
A blended approach often gives more control: direct new deposits and dividends to underweight assets, use withdrawals from overweight assets when practical, and make a smaller selective sale only if needed. The right mix depends on the size of the drift, available cash, taxes, fees and how quickly you need to reduce risk.

A large gain does not require an automatic sale. First determine whether the gain has pushed the asset above its target or created an unacceptable concentration.
Use cash flows before selling when they are sufficient
Redirect new contributions, dividends or planned withdrawals toward underweight categories. This changes the mix without immediately realizing a gain. It is most practical when the drift is modest or you regularly add money.
Consider a partial sale for a concentrated winner
If one holding dominates the portfolio, a partial sale can reduce risk while leaving some exposure to further gains. Estimate the gain in each tax lot, the holding period, and all transaction costs before placing an order. A partial sale is a planning option, not a universal rule; it can spread taxable realization over time but does not eliminate it.

Illustrative gain example
Suppose a $100,000 portfolio was intended to be 60% stocks and 40% bonds. After stocks rise, it is $80,000 in stocks and $20,000 in bonds, or 80% stocks and 20% bonds. Selling $20,000 of stock and buying $20,000 of bonds would return the values to $60,000 and $40,000 before fees and taxes. If you used only new bond money and made no sale, you would need about $33,333 of additional bonds for the original $80,000 stock position to equal 60% of the new total. That arithmetic shows why contributions can help but may not be enough for a large drift.

A fall can make an asset underweight, but selling solely because the market is frightening can lock in a loss and leave the portfolio inconsistent with your plan. Reconfirm the target and your liquidity needs first.
Decide whether the target still fits
If your time horizon, income, emergency reserve or ability to tolerate losses has changed, a lower-risk target may be appropriate. If the target is unchanged and you have sufficient liquidity, buying an underweight asset may restore the intended exposure. Follow the written plan rather than a headline or a short-term forecast.
Illustrative loss example
Imagine a $100,000 portfolio that began with $60,000 in stocks and $40,000 in bonds. If stocks fall 30% and bonds are unchanged, the portfolio becomes $42,000 in stocks and $40,000 in bonds, totaling $82,000. Stocks are now about 51.2% of the portfolio. To return to a 60/40 mix, the investor would move approximately $7,200 from bonds to stocks, producing about $49,200 in stocks and $32,800 in bonds. The example is arithmetic, not a forecast or a recommendation to buy a particular asset.
Use tax-loss harvesting deliberately
Fidelity notes that losses may offset capital gains or income under applicable rules. Tax-loss harvesting can therefore be useful, but the tax result depends on the transaction, the account, the investor’s other gains and losses and current tax law. Review tax lots, holding periods and wash-sale exposure across the account set with a qualified tax professional before selling or replacing a position.

Taxable-account decisions
In a taxable account, selling an appreciated position can create a realized capital gain. A loss sale can create a realized loss. Neither result is determined by the account’s overall performance; it depends on the specific lots sold and the applicable rules.
Estimate the consequences before submitting an order
- Identify the exact shares or lots you would sell.
- Calculate the estimated proceeds, cost basis and gain or loss for each lot.
- Check how long each lot has been held and whether that affects its tax treatment.
- Review expected gains and losses elsewhere in the portfolio and any planned sales.
- Estimate commissions, fund charges, spreads or other transaction costs.
- Check whether purchases in another account could create wash-sale complications.
- Confirm the result with a qualified tax professional when the amount is material or the situation is complex.
Investor.gov advises considering whether your chosen rebalancing method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. That decision should be made before trading, not after a year-end tax statement arrives.

Use partial and account-aware adjustments
You may be able to reduce taxable sales by directing new money to underweight assets, using tax-advantaged account contributions where appropriate, or selling only enough of an appreciated position to bring risk within your policy range. The best location for a trade depends on the account rules and your circumstances, so evaluate the combined portfolio rather than optimizing one account in isolation.
Keep rebalancing separate from market timing
Vanguard describes rebalancing as staying in sync with long-term goals rather than trying to time markets. A decision to sell a stock allocation because it exceeded your target is different from a prediction that stocks will fall next week. Likewise, buying an underweight allocation to restore a plan is different from guessing that a rally is about to begin.

The sources do not establish one universal review schedule or drift threshold. Choose a method you can follow consistently and document it.
Decide what triggers a review
- A calendar review at an interval that fits your circumstances.
- A review whenever an asset crosses a drift band you define in advance.
- A review after a major change in goals, income, time horizon or liquidity.
- A review when a single holding exceeds a concentration limit.
Specify the order of operations
- Reconfirm the target and liquidity reserve.
- Aggregate all accounts and calculate current weights.
- Apply new contributions, dividends and withdrawals first where practical.
- Compare the tax and cost of any required sale.
- Execute only the trades needed to meet the policy.
- Record the date, reason, lots sold and resulting allocation.
A written policy reduces the temptation to react to whichever market moved most recently. Review the policy itself when your life changes; do not silently abandon it during volatility.

| Approach | Target setting | Drift monitoring | Tax handling | Customization and control | Fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-directed portfolio | You choose and document the allocation. | You calculate weights and apply your own trigger. | You select lots and decide when to realize gains or losses. | Highest customization and investor control, with the most work. | Depends on the investments and trading arrangements you use. |
| Target-date fund | The fund follows its stated glide path toward a target date. | The fund generally handles allocation changes and rebalancing over time. | Tax treatment depends on the account and fund distributions; you have less control over individual lots. | Simple, but customization is limited to the fund’s design. | Review the fund’s expense ratio and any other charges. |
| Robo-adviser | You provide goals and risk information; the service assigns a portfolio. | Software monitors drift and may trade automatically; trigger transparency varies. | Some services offer tax-aware features, but rules and implementation differ. | More automation, with less direct control than a self-directed account. | Provider fees and underlying fund expenses vary; check the current fee schedule. |
Schwab says its Intelligent Portfolios uses technology plus human oversight to monitor portfolios daily and rebalance as needed. It also warns that diversification, asset allocation, automatic investing and rebalancing do not ensure a profit or protect against losses in declining markets. Automation can execute a policy, but it cannot remove investment risk or decide whether your target still fits after a life change.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Selling every winner
Problem: A gain alone is treated as a sell signal. Correction: Compare the holding with the target and concentration limits. Use contributions or a partial sale when a full sale is unnecessary.
Ignoring the rest of the accounts
Problem: One account looks balanced while the combined portfolio is not. Correction: Aggregate household accounts that share the same goal before calculating weights.
Buying after a loss without checking liquidity
Problem: A plan to buy the dip consumes emergency cash or money needed soon. Correction: Confirm reserves and near-term obligations before adding risk.
Overlooking taxes and lots
Problem: A sale is chosen by dollar amount without checking basis, holding period or wash-sale exposure. Correction: Review lots and the whole account set before trading, and obtain tax advice when needed.
Assuming automation guarantees a result
Problem: An automated rebalance is mistaken for protection from losses. Correction: Treat automation as an execution tool and continue reviewing the target, fees and account coverage.
Changing the policy in response to headlines
Problem: The investor repeatedly moves between allocations based on recent performance. Correction: Use the prewritten trigger and change the policy only for a documented change in circumstances.
Before-and-after checklist
- Have your goals, risk tolerance, time horizon or liquidity needs changed?
- Is the target allocation written in percentages or ranges?
- Have you included every relevant account and holding?
- Which categories and individual positions are overweight or underweight?
- Can contributions, dividends or withdrawals reduce the drift?
- For each possible sale, what are the basis, holding period, estimated gain or loss and costs?
- Could a replacement purchase create wash-sale complications?
- Does the proposed trade follow your written trigger rather than a market prediction?
- Have you recorded what you changed and when you will review it again?
Rebalancing after a gain or loss is therefore a sequence: confirm the destination, measure the entire portfolio, choose the least disruptive route, check tax and cost consequences, and execute only what your policy requires. The account balance may rise or fall afterward; the purpose of the process is to keep risk aligned with the plan you can actually maintain.
