Start with your pre-set target allocation, not with the size of the market drop. A sell-off may leave stocks below their planned weight and bonds or cash above it, but the decline alone is not a reason to change the plan. Compare your current percentages with the targets chosen for your goals and risk tolerance, then use contributions, dividends, interest, withdrawals, or carefully selected trades to close any drift. Before selling, check transaction costs and the tax consequences for the specific account.
Rebalancing restores a risk mix you already selected. It is different from changing that mix because your time horizon, objectives, finances, or ability to tolerate losses have changed.

What rebalancing means after a sell-off
Rebalancing brings a portfolio back toward its intended percentages among stocks, bonds, cash, and any other asset classes in the plan. Asset classes rarely move in lockstep. If shares fall while bonds or cash hold up better, the stock percentage shrinks even though you have not placed a trade. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that these differing returns can push a portfolio away from its intended allocation.

The decision is therefore a comparison:
- Target allocation: the percentages selected for your goals, time horizon, financial circumstances, and risk tolerance.
- Current allocation: the percentages your holdings represent now, after the market move.
- Review rule: the calendar date, drift band, or combined rule that tells you when to act.
If the target still fits and your review rule has been met, move toward the target. If the target no longer fits, review the investment plan itself before trading. A sell-off is a reason to check the numbers and your circumstances, not an automatic buy or sell signal.

This is general educational information based on U.S.-oriented SEC and Vanguard guidance. Tax treatment, account rules, available investments, and suitable allocations differ by jurisdiction and by person.
Step 1: Find the target and the rule you agreed to follow
Use the written investment plan first
Look for the investment policy statement, workplace-plan election, account profile, or other record that states your intended percentages. If there is no written target, pause before making a large trade and establish one based on your goals and risk tolerance. Do not substitute a generic stock-and-bond split for a plan that reflects your own needs.
Record the target for each broad asset class and, where your plan requires it, for important subcategories. For example, a plan may specify separate percentages for domestic stocks, international stocks, high-quality bonds, and cash. Use the same categories in your current-value calculation so the comparison is meaningful.

Common rules include:
- A calendar review, such as checking on a chosen date or interval.
- A threshold review, which acts when an asset class moves outside a selected percentage band.
- A combined rule, which reviews on a schedule but trades only when drift exceeds the band.
Vanguard gives a five-percentage-point drift threshold as an illustration. That figure is an example of a possible rule, not a universal standard or a regulator requirement. A review schedule should be manageable enough that you can follow it consistently; Vanguard notes that an annual review may suit many investors.
Step 2: Measure the portfolio’s current weights
Use current market values, not the amounts you originally paid. Add the value of every holding in the account or household portfolio covered by your plan. For each asset class, calculate:
current weight = asset-class value ÷ total portfolio value × 100
Then compare that percentage with the target. The difference is the drift:
drift = current weight − target weight
A negative result means the asset class is below target; a positive result means it is above target.
Illustrative calculation
Assume a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio has a target of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. After a sell-off, stocks are worth $54,000 and bonds $46,000. The portfolio total remains $100,000, so the current weights are 54% stocks and 46% bonds. Stocks are six percentage points below target and bonds six points above it. Whether that crosses your action threshold depends on the rule in your plan.

If prices have moved again, recalculate immediately before placing an order. Contributions, withdrawals, dividends, interest, and trades also change the percentages, so use the latest values available in each account.
Check what each holding actually represents
Classify holdings by the asset class used in your plan rather than by fund name alone. A single fund can contain several types of assets, and a cash balance may sit outside the investment funds. If you cannot determine a holding’s classification, obtain the fund’s current allocation information or ask the plan administrator or a qualified professional before counting it.
Step 3: Decide whether the review rule has been triggered
Apply the rule consistently instead of letting the day’s headlines determine the action.
| Method | What triggers action | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | A chosen date or interval | Simple to schedule and remember | May lead to a trade even when drift is small |
| Threshold review | An allocation moves beyond a chosen band | Connects action to the size of the drift | Requires monitoring |
| Combined rule | A scheduled review finds drift beyond the band | Provides a regular habit while limiting unnecessary trades | Requires both a schedule and a defined band |
Do not treat the five-point example described by Vanguard as proof that five points is right for you. Your plan may use a different band, a different review interval, or no automatic trigger. The SEC and Vanguard materials do not identify one method as best for every investor.
Step 4: Choose the least disruptive way to restore the target
There are three practical routes. The right choice depends on the size of the drift, available cash flows, account structure, transaction costs, and tax effects.
Direct new money to underweight assets
Use new contributions to buy the asset class that is below target rather than adding proportionally to every holding. This can gradually restore the mix without selling an existing position. It is most useful when you contribute regularly and the gap is modest.
Recommended Free Tools
For a workplace plan or investment account, change the contribution percentages before the next deposit if the platform allows it. Confirm that the change applies to future contributions only; it may not alter existing balances.
Redirect dividends and interest
If your account lets you choose where distributions go, direct dividends or interest toward the underweight class. This is another way to use cash flows instead of selling. Check whether automatic reinvestment is still sending distributions back into an overweight holding.
Use withdrawals from overweight assets
When you are taking money out, fund the withdrawal from an asset class that is above target, if that choice is consistent with your plan and the account permits it. This can reduce an overweight without a separate sale to raise cash.

Sell overweight holdings and buy underweights
If cash flows are too small or the drift is large, selling part of an overweight position and buying the underweight can restore the allocation more directly. Place the orders only after checking the account’s fees, bid-ask spreads, settlement process, and tax consequences.

Make a partial adjustment when a full reset is costly
You do not always have to move all the way back to the target in one transaction. Vanguard discusses partial rebalancing as a way to limit costs. A partial move can reduce the largest drift while allowing future contributions and distributions to finish the adjustment. Write down the remaining gap and the date you will review it again so “partial” does not become an indefinite deviation.
| Approach | When it fits | Potential limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Contributions, dividends, and interest | Regular cash flows are available and the gap is manageable | May take longer to correct a large mismatch |
| Withdrawal from an overweight | You already need to take money out | Available choices depend on the account |
| Sell and buy | The review rule is met and cash flows are insufficient | Can create trading costs and taxable gains |
| Partial adjustment | A smaller move can reduce drift while limiting costs | Leaves some difference from target until the next review |
Step 5: Check taxes, fees, and account effects before selling
Transaction costs
Review commissions, fund trading charges, spreads, redemption fees, and any account-level costs that apply to the proposed orders. The SEC specifically advises considering transaction costs when choosing a rebalancing method. A contribution-based adjustment may avoid some of these costs, while a series of small trades can increase them.
Taxable gains and losses
Selling can realize a gain or loss. The tax result depends on the asset, purchase history, holding period, account type, local rules, and your overall tax position. A loss or gain shown on the platform is not, by itself, a complete tax calculation. Obtain individualized tax advice before acting when the amounts are material or the rules are unfamiliar.
Account-specific restrictions
Check whether the account limits which funds can be exchanged, how quickly cash becomes available, or how distributions are handled. A workplace plan, an individual investment account, and other account types can have different procedures and tax treatment. The correct rebalancing method in one account may be unsuitable in another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOrder and record checks
Before submitting an order, verify the security, asset class, dollar amount or share quantity, and destination of the proceeds. Save a record of the target, current weights, calculation date, orders, and next review date. Clear records help you apply the same rule during the next period rather than reacting from memory.
Step 6: Confirm that the target still fits
Restoring a target and changing a target are separate decisions. Review the allocation itself when one of these has materially changed:
- Your investment goal or the amount you need to fund it.
- Your time horizon or the date when the money will be needed.
- Your income, cash needs, debt, emergency reserves, or other financial circumstances.
- Your ability and willingness to tolerate losses.
A frightening market move can reveal that the selected risk level was never comfortable, but fear alone does not establish a new long-term allocation. If your circumstances have changed, document the new objective and risk decision first, then rebalance to the revised target. If they have not, avoid changing the plan merely because one asset class recently performed poorly or because you expect a particular next market move.
Worked example: using cash flow before selling
Consider the illustrative $100,000 portfolio with a 60% stock and 40% bond target, now at 54% stocks and 46% bonds. Suppose the investor is scheduled to add $5,000 and the plan’s rule permits a threshold review.

- Direct the $5,000 contribution to stocks rather than splitting it across both asset classes.
- The new total becomes $105,000, with $59,000 in stocks and $46,000 in bonds.
- Stocks now represent approximately 56.2% of the portfolio and bonds approximately 43.8%.
- Compare those new weights with the plan’s threshold. If the remaining gap is acceptable, keep directing future cash flows to stocks until the target is restored. If the rule still requires action, evaluate a trade after checking taxes and costs.
The arithmetic is only an illustration of the process. It is not a recommended stock-and-bond mix, contribution amount, or threshold.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to carry out the review without market timing
Rebalancing is not a forecast that stocks will rise immediately after a sell-off. The goal is to maintain the chosen risk mix over the period covered by the plan. To keep the decision disciplined:
- Set the review date or monitoring reminder before the next period begins.
- Use the same asset-class definitions and calculation method each time.
- Apply the written threshold or calendar rule rather than a headline or intraday price move.
- Prefer available cash flows when they can correct the drift within the plan’s limits.
- When trades are necessary, check costs and taxes before submitting them.
- Record the resulting weights and the next review date.
Do not search for a “best day” established by this guidance; no such market-timing date is identified. Prices can continue moving after any decision, so the process should be judged by whether it follows the plan, not by whether the market immediately reverses.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Changing the target because of the decline
Problem: Selling stocks simply because they fell can move the portfolio farther from the risk level selected for the long term.
Correction: First compare current weights with the existing target. Change the target only after reviewing goals, time horizon, finances, and risk tolerance.
Using a threshold as a universal rule
Problem: Treating Vanguard’s five-percentage-point example as a requirement can create trades that do not match your plan.
Correction: Use the band documented in your own policy, or establish one deliberately before relying on it.
Ignoring cash flows
Problem: Selling and buying can create costs when a contribution, dividend, interest payment, or withdrawal could have moved the mix.
Correction: Check where new money and distributions are going, and use them to address underweights when practical.
Best Value
Trading without a tax check
Problem: A trade that appears simple can realize a taxable gain or interact with other transactions.
Correction: Review the account’s tax treatment and obtain personal tax guidance when needed.
Failing to recalculate after the order
Problem: A trade amount chosen from an earlier price can leave the portfolio outside the intended range.

Letting a partial rebalance drift indefinitely
Problem: A cost-saving partial move is made with no follow-up, leaving the portfolio away from its target.
Correction: Note the remaining gap and schedule the next review under the same rule.
When to involve a qualified professional
Consider individualized investment or tax advice when your goals conflict, the portfolio spans several accounts, a sale would create a substantial taxable gain, you need regular withdrawals, or you cannot determine the risk level and asset classification. A professional can help document an allocation and review process, but the decision should still be tied to your objectives and circumstances rather than a market headline.
Practical checklist
- Locate the written target allocation.
- Locate the calendar, threshold, or combined review rule.
- List current holdings and classify them consistently.
- Calculate each current weight from current market values.
- Measure the drift from target.
- Check whether the rule has been triggered.
- Direct contributions, dividends, interest, or withdrawals toward underweights when suitable.
- Before selling, review fees, spreads, account restrictions, and tax effects.
- Decide whether a full or partial adjustment is appropriate.
- Confirm that goals, time horizon, finances, and risk tolerance still support the target.
- Record the action and the next review date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I wait until the market reaches a bottom before rebalancing?
No bottom is established by the rebalancing method. Follow the target and review rule you selected, because waiting for a predicted turning point changes the process into market timing.
Is annual rebalancing mandatory?
No. Vanguard presents annual review as a schedule that may suit many investors, while other plans use a threshold or a combined rule. Use the schedule and band your plan can maintain consistently.
Can contributions alone fix a portfolio that moved far from target?
They can, but the correction may take longer than a large gap allows. Compare the resulting weights with your rule after each cash flow; if the drift remains outside the permitted range, evaluate a trade after checking taxes and costs.
What if I no longer tolerate the losses implied by my target?
That is a reason to review the target allocation itself, along with your goals, time horizon, finances, and risk tolerance. Do not describe the change as ordinary rebalancing; it is a new allocation decision.
