Do not sell AI stocks solely because headlines say the sector crashed. First measure how much the sell-off changed your portfolio’s actual weights, then compare those weights with a target built around your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation. If AI exposure is above your target, rebalance with the least tax-costly method that brings risk back within your chosen limits.
That may mean selling part of an overweight position, directing new money and dividends elsewhere, or shifting gradually rather than making one large trade. A market drop changes prices; it does not, by itself, change your investment plan.

What rebalancing means after an AI sell-off
Rebalancing is the process of moving a portfolio back toward a target mix of assets. The target might specify percentages for stocks, bonds, cash and other categories, with a separate limit for a concentrated AI or technology sleeve. The objective is risk control and plan adherence, not predicting whether the next AI rally or decline is about to begin.

If AI shares fall more than the rest of your holdings, their percentage of the portfolio may shrink and leave you underweight. If you continue buying the dip while other assets fall less, AI may still dominate the portfolio even after a price decline. Only a complete inventory shows which situation applies.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes three basic ways to rebalance:
- Sell overweight categories and buy underweight categories.
- Buy only the underweight categories until the mix moves back toward target.
- Direct ongoing contributions toward underweight categories.
The SEC also warns that transaction fees and tax consequences should be considered before choosing a method. A position that is outside your preferred range is not automatically a sell order.

- Cash, short-term bonds and money-market holdings reserved for near-term spending.
For each holding, calculate two percentages: its share of the entire portfolio and its share of the equity allocation. A stock that is 8% of your total portfolio is a much larger risk if equities make up only 40% of the total than if equities make up 90%.
Look through funds for hidden concentration
A broad index fund can contain many of the same large technology companies you own directly. Add the look-through exposure where practical. If you own several funds, list their largest holdings and estimate the combined percentage represented by the same company or narrow industry. Diversification can reduce the damage from a single holding or sector, but it cannot eliminate losses.
Fidelity’s diversification guidance cautions that concentrating too heavily in one investment can make a company-specific problem damaging to an overall financial plan even when the wider market is performing well. Treat that warning as a portfolio-level test, not a prediction about any particular AI company.

Include liabilities and future cash needs
Note high-interest debt, planned home or education payments, emergency reserves and withdrawals expected in the next several years. Money needed soon should not depend on a volatile AI position recovering on your preferred schedule. Your investable portfolio should be evaluated alongside your complete financial situation.
Reconfirm the target before trading
Write down the allocation you intended to maintain before deciding what to sell. A target should reflect:
- Goal: retirement, a house deposit, education, a business reserve or another purpose.
- Time horizon: when the money must be available and how long it can remain invested.
- Risk tolerance: the loss you could withstand financially and emotionally without abandoning the plan.
- Financial situation: income stability, debt, emergency savings, taxes and other assets.
If one of those factors has changed, establish a new target first. For example, a planned withdrawal next year may justify a larger cash or short-term bond allocation regardless of what AI stocks do. If your circumstances and objectives are unchanged, treat the sell-off as a possible drift from the existing plan rather than a reason to rewrite it.
Set an explicit AI or single-stock limit
Many investors use an overall stock target but no ceiling for one company or theme. Add a written maximum for any single stock and for the combined AI sleeve if concentration is a concern. The appropriate number depends on your circumstances; the available guidance does not establish a universal percentage or an automatic exit rule for AI shares.
Choose a repeatable rebalancing rule
A rule prevents a dramatic headline from determining every decision. Common approaches include:
- Calendar review: check the portfolio on a fixed schedule, such as annually or semiannually, and trade only when the mix warrants it.
- Percentage-point bands: trade when an asset class or sleeve moves a specified number of percentage points away from target.
- Calendar plus bands: review on schedule but act only when a band is breached.
Vanguard illustrates a 70% stocks/30% bonds portfolio with a five-percentage-point trigger. In that example, the investor would review the allocation when stocks reached 75% or 65%, then restore the chosen mix. This is an example of a rule, not a recommendation for every investor or a forecast of market behavior.

Compare four ways to reduce or correct AI concentration
| Method | How it works | When it can fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full sale or large reduction | Sell enough of the AI position to reach the target immediately, then buy underweight assets. | The position no longer fits your plan, exceeds a hard limit, or creates unacceptable risk. | May realize a large taxable gain and can leave you regretting an all-at-once decision if prices rebound. |
| Partial sale | Trim the position to the edge of your band or toward the target without exiting completely. | The overweight is meaningful but a full sale would create an outsized tax bill or violate a diversification preference. | Concentration remains, and another trade may be needed later. |
| Hold and redirect | Keep the current shares while directing contributions, dividends and interest to underweight assets. | The deviation is modest, cash flows are steady and taxes or trading costs make selling unattractive. | Correction takes longer, and the overweight can persist if contributions are too small. |
| Gradual rebalance | Make a series of planned trades or contribution changes on dates specified in advance. | The allocation change is large, the tax impact needs to be spread across years, or a staged move helps you follow the plan. | Prices may move against the strategy while you wait, and the final target is not reached immediately. |
Compare every option on five questions: how much concentration remains, whether the target is met, the tax and transaction cost, the liquidity needed for your time horizon, and how easy the rule is to execute consistently. A full exit can be reasonable when the holding no longer belongs in the plan, but no source establishes a universal rule that every investor should sell AI stocks after a decline.
Use cash flows before taxable sales
The least disruptive first step is often to change where new money goes. In a taxable account or retirement plan, direct future contributions to underweight assets. You can also reinvest dividends and interest into those categories instead of automatically buying more of the overweight position. If you are taking withdrawals, sell or withdraw from the overweight category when doing so does not conflict with tax or liquidity needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVanguard specifically describes this cash-flow approach as a way to rebalance without selling existing holdings. It works best when the deviation is moderate and regular contributions are large enough to move the percentages within a reasonable period. Calculate the expected effect rather than assuming a few deposits will solve a large concentration.
A simple contribution calculation
Suppose a $100,000 portfolio is 35% in an AI sleeve but your target is 20%. If you add $10,000 to other assets and make no trades, AI becomes about 31.8% of the enlarged portfolio, before market movement. That is progress but not a complete correction. A larger contribution, a partial sale, or both may be required. The example is arithmetic, not a forecast.
Handle taxes and trading costs deliberately
In a taxable brokerage account, selling an appreciated position generally realizes a capital gain. Estimate the cost basis, holding period, expected gain, applicable tax rate and trading charges before submitting an order. A profitable sale held for a longer period may receive different tax treatment from a short-term sale; confirm the rules that apply to your jurisdiction and situation with a qualified tax professional.

Vanguard’s tax guidance recommends considering higher-cost-basis lots first and focusing on the most extreme overweights or underweights when sales are necessary. Many brokers allow specific-lot identification, but the setting must be selected before or at the time of the trade. Save the confirmation and basis information.
Recommended Free Tools
Tax-advantaged accounts generally do not create an immediate capital-gains tax bill for each internal trade in the way a taxable account does, although withdrawals, contribution limits, plan rules and future taxes still matter. A workplace plan may restrict which funds can be bought or sold. Check the account’s rules before assuming that any target can be implemented there.
Estimate the amount to sell
- Calculate the current portfolio value, including the AI position.
- Multiply that value by the target percentage for the AI sleeve.
- Subtract the target value from the current AI value to find the approximate reduction needed.
- Adjust for expected commissions, spreads, taxes, cash reserves and any contribution you will make at the same time.
Use actual lot-level basis data for the tax estimate. A target calculation tells you how much risk to remove; it does not tell you which lot has the best after-tax outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a gradual shift is safer to execute
For a very large allocation change, Vanguard advises considering a gradual shift. A staged plan can divide the intended reduction into pre-specified amounts and dates, such as quarterly trades, while directing all new contributions away from the concentrated sleeve. The benefit is behavioral and tax planning: you avoid making the entire decision during one emotional session and may spread realized gains across tax years.
Gradual implementation is not a guarantee of a better return. If AI prices rise during the schedule, the portfolio may remain more concentrated than intended; if they fall, the eventual sales may occur at lower prices. Decide in advance what would cause you to accelerate, pause or complete the plan, and do not change those conditions merely because a headline is alarming.
Step-by-step rebalancing workflow
- Pause the headline reaction. Do not place a market order while you are still trying to determine what changed.
- Inventory every account. List individual AI shares, funds, options, employer stock, cash and bonds, then identify overlapping holdings.
- Calculate actual weights. Measure each holding, the AI sleeve and broad asset classes as percentages of the entire portfolio and of equities.
- Confirm the target. Revisit goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation and any single-stock or sector ceiling.
- Apply the written rule. Check whether the deviation breaches your calendar, percentage band or combined trigger.
- Model alternatives. Compare hold-and-redirect, a partial sale, a full sale and a staged plan using concentration, target fit, taxes, fees and liquidity.
- Use cash flows first where practical. Redirect contributions, dividends, interest and planned withdrawals to underweight assets.
- Select tax lots and trades. Estimate basis, holding period, gain or loss, spread, commission and the amount needed to reach the target.
- Execute according to the plan. Use the account’s available order and lot-selection controls, and verify the resulting percentages after settlement.
- Document the decision. Record the target, band, trades or contribution changes, tax assumptions, reason and next review date.
What to do if the sale would create a large tax bill
A large unrealized gain does not make concentration harmless, but it changes the trade-off. Consider trimming only enough to return inside your band, selling higher-cost-basis lots, directing all new money elsewhere, or spreading sales across planned periods. In a taxable account, compare the estimated tax with the financial damage that an additional decline could cause at your current concentration.
Best Value
Do not create a tax loss solely to make the portfolio look tidy. A loss may be useful in a broader tax plan, but rules governing repurchases and loss harvesting can be complex and differ by jurisdiction. Obtain individualized advice when the position is substantial, includes employee compensation or interacts with other gains and losses.
Common mistakes after an AI crash
- Confusing a lower price with lower concentration. Recalculate percentages; the sleeve may still be above its limit.
- Buying the dip without a target. An additional purchase can turn a temporary allocation into a permanent risk.
- Ignoring index overlap. Selling one stock may leave similar exposure inside several funds.
- Trading the whole portfolio from a headline. Rebalancing addresses drift; it is not a forecast of the next market move.
- Forgetting taxes and spreads. A mathematically perfect allocation can be inefficient after transaction costs and realized gains.
- Using a rule that cannot be followed. A narrow band that triggers constant trades or a vague “I will review later” promise both undermine discipline.
- Putting near-term spending at risk. Money needed soon should not depend on a concentrated, volatile holding.
- Making an unrecorded exception. Without a written reason and review date, a temporary AI position can quietly become a core holding.
Illustrative allocation examples
SEC hypothetical: a stock allocation that drifts upward
The SEC uses a hypothetical example in which a stock allocation moves from 60% to 80%. The lesson is that a portfolio can drift substantially as prices change, even when the investor makes no new decision. The example does not predict what AI stocks or any market will do. Apply the same arithmetic to your own target and current values.
Vanguard hypothetical: 70% stocks, 30% bonds
Vanguard’s illustration starts with 70% stocks and 30% bonds and uses a five-percentage-point trigger. A move to 75% stocks or 65% stocks would prompt a review under that rule. It is an example for explaining bands, not a prescribed mix for a particular age, goal or risk profile.
How to decide whether to buy the dip or move to bonds
Buying more AI shares is justified only if the purchase fits the target allocation, your time horizon and your ability to tolerate another substantial loss. A lower price alone is not evidence that the risk has become acceptable. Moving some money to bonds or cash can make sense when your target calls for it, your spending date is closer, or your tolerance for equity volatility has changed. The decision should follow the allocation policy, not a prediction about the next AI headline.
If the sell-off revealed that you cannot stay invested through a decline, that is useful information about risk tolerance. Revisit the entire stock allocation rather than simply replacing one volatile AI company with another technology fund.
Recordkeeping and the next review
Keep a one-page record containing the target percentages, AI and single-stock limits, trigger bands, account locations, tax assumptions, selected lots, trades, contribution instructions and next review date. Recalculate after trades settle and whenever a major goal, income change, inheritance, job-related stock award or withdrawal plan changes.
Vanguard summarizes the purpose this way: “Rebalancing isn’t about market-timing; it’s about sticking to Vanguard’s principles for investing success and creating a strategy to stay in sync with your long-term goals.” That principle applies whether the portfolio contains AI stocks, index funds or no technology exposure at all.
