On the National Stock Exchange of India snapshot dated 23 September 2026, Nestlé India (NESTLEIND) closed at ₹1,382.90. Its reported one-week return was −0.11%, versus +0.99% for the NIFTY 50. That means the share was almost flat but underperformed its benchmark by 1.10 percentage points during that week. The same snapshot showed positive Nestlé India returns over one, three and five years, although those historical windows do not forecast the next week.
This guide shows how to calculate that weekly figure, choose the correct prices, compare the stock fairly with NIFTY 50, interpret direction, persistence and risk, and check whether dividends, results or other corporate events coincide with a move.

What a weekly return tells you
A weekly return measures the percentage change between two consistently chosen week-ending prices. The usual convention is the closing price on the last trading session of the current week compared with the closing price on the last trading session of the preceding week.

For example, if NESTLEIND closed at ₹1,400 one week and ₹1,382.90 the next, the calculation would be (1,382.90 ÷ 1,400 − 1) × 100, or approximately −1.22%. A negative result means the share price fell between the two selected closes; it does not by itself explain why.
Price return versus total return
An unadjusted close produces a price return. It excludes cash dividends and can make the chart show a sudden drop on the ex-dividend date even when an investor who received the dividend had a smaller economic loss.
An adjusted close incorporates the data provider’s treatment of dividends, splits and bonus issues. Use adjusted closes when the aim is to measure the change in an investment’s value across corporate actions. If adjusted data are unavailable, label the result “price return” and discuss dividends separately rather than presenting it as a total return.
How to calculate Nestlé India’s weekly return
1. Fix the week-ending convention
Choose one rule and apply it to every week: normally the final NSE trading session from Monday through Friday. A market holiday can make Thursday the week-ending session. Do not compare a Friday close with a Monday opening price or mix calendar-week and rolling-seven-day periods.
Record the exchange, session date and timezone beside each observation. This prevents a late Friday transaction, a holiday or a data-feed timezone conversion from being mistaken for a different weekly period.
2. Identify the security correctly
The NSE identifier is NESTLEIND; the ISIN in NSE’s audited integrated filing is INE239A01024. Confirm that your data set refers to the NSE-listed Nestlé India equity rather than a similarly named instrument, an index constituent list or a derivative contract.

3. Download two consecutive closes
For each calculation, retain at least the current and previous week-ending close. A longer history is preferable because it allows you to inspect streaks, drawdowns and volatility rather than relying on one observation.

- Raw close
- Adjusted close, if supplied
- Return basis: adjusted or unadjusted
- Weekly return
- NIFTY 50 close and return for the same dates
- Event notes, such as an ex-dividend date or results release
4. Apply the formula
In a spreadsheet where the current week’s adjusted close is in cell C3 and the previous week’s adjusted close is in C2, enter:
=(C3/C2)-1
Format the result as a percentage. Multiplying by 100 is only necessary when displaying a numeric percentage rather than using percentage formatting. If you use unadjusted closes, name the column “weekly price return (unadjusted)” so the basis remains visible.
5. Repeat the same calculation for NIFTY 50
Use the identical week-ending sessions and price basis for the index. A benchmark return based on different dates, adjusted treatment or market-close conventions is not a fair comparison.

Is the price trend up or down?
Do not classify a trend from one weekly percentage alone. Read at least three separate properties: direction, persistence and risk.
Direction: higher highs and lows or lower highs and lows
Mark each week’s high, low and close, then inspect the sequence. A rising structure has successive swing highs and swing lows above the prior ones. A falling structure has lower highs and lower lows. A sideways structure alternates without establishing either sequence.
The 23 September 2026 NSE snapshot recorded a 52-week high of ₹1,553 on 7 August 2026 and a 52-week low of ₹1,145 on 1 October 2025. At ₹1,382.90, the close was about 10.95% below that high and about 20.78% above that low. Those distances describe the position inside the preceding 52-week range; they do not identify the next support or resistance level.

Count positive and negative weekly returns in a row. A single −0.11% week is different from eight consecutive negative weeks. Also record the size of each move: a streak of tiny gains may convey less information than two large advances separated by flat weeks.
Define the rule before looking at the chart—for example, a positive week is any return greater than zero, while a “flat” week falls inside a band you specify. Changing the threshold after seeing the result can exaggerate persistence.
Risk: measure dispersion, not just direction
Weekly volatility describes how widely returns vary. The NSE snapshot listed 24.84% annualised volatility for NESTLEIND. Annualised volatility is not a 24.84% weekly loss expectation; it is a statistical dispersion measure expressed on an annualised scale. Compare it with the same measure for NIFTY 50 and use the same return basis and observation period.

Large positive and negative weeks can produce a positive multi-year return while still exposing an investor to substantial interim drawdowns. Plot the weekly return distribution or calculate standard deviation alongside cumulative return.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to compare Nestlé India with NIFTY 50 correctly
A benchmark comparison answers a different question from “did the share rise?” It asks whether the share delivered more or less than a relevant alternative over the same interval.
Use matching inputs
- Use the same week-ending sessions for both series.
- Use adjusted closes for both, or unadjusted closes for both; do not mix them.
- Use the same start and end dates for one-week, one-month and longer windows.
- State whether the figures are price returns or include distributions.
- Record the data date and timezone next to every chart or table.
- Compare volatility and drawdown using the same look-back period.
Read absolute and relative performance together
Nestlé India can post a positive week and still underperform if NIFTY 50 rises more. Conversely, a falling share can outperform when the index falls further. On 23 September 2026, NESTLEIND’s −0.11% week was slightly negative in absolute terms and 1.10 percentage points behind NIFTY 50’s +0.99%.
For longer periods in the same snapshot, the stock’s +18.37% one-year return exceeded NIFTY 50’s −6.84%, and its +39.42% five-year return exceeded the index’s +31.56%. The comparison is window-dependent; selecting a different start date can change the result materially.

Check annual returns and annual reports
The company’s Annual Returns archive includes returns through 2025–26. NSE’s annual-report index lists Nestlé India reports through 2026 and was updated on 28 August 2026. These documents help reconcile accounting periods, reported performance and corporate actions when a chart’s long-term return does not match a headline figure.
Mark dividends and other corporate actions
Use the NSE quote page’s corporate-actions section to identify dividend ex-dates, splits, bonuses and other adjustments. A raw-price drop on an ex-dividend date is not automatically a deterioration in the business. Recalculate with adjusted prices when the purpose is investment performance, and retain the raw-price series when the purpose is purely price movement.
Do not infer causation from proximity alone
A results release, board meeting or dividend date occurring in the same week establishes timing, not causation. Note other market-wide events, compare NIFTY 50’s move, and examine whether the stock’s volume and volatility changed. Without a documented explanation, describe the event as a possible context rather than a proven cause.

Ownership and liquidity context
Nestlé India’s 2025–26 annual report recorded 62.76% promoter and promoter-group ownership and 37.24% total public shareholding. That concentration matters when interpreting free-float-based volume, turnover or market-cap comparisons: the public-share denominator is not the same as total shares outstanding.
Do not conclude that a high or low weekly volume is unusual without stating whether the comparison uses total shares, public float or an average-volume baseline. Corporate-action adjustments can also change historical share counts, so document the denominator and the effective date.
A practical weekly-return worksheet
A repeatable worksheet makes the analysis auditable:
- Import data: load daily NSE closes for NESTLEIND and NIFTY 50, retaining the session date.
- Filter sessions: select the last trading session in each calendar week and label the chosen date.
- Choose the basis: use adjusted closes for an investment-return series; otherwise keep unadjusted closes and label the output as price return.
- Calculate returns: for each row after the first, divide the current close by the previous row’s close and subtract one.
- Calculate relative return: subtract the NIFTY 50 weekly return from the Nestlé India weekly return.
- Add event markers: enter verified ex-dividend dates, results releases, board meetings and other announcements.
- Summarise: count positive and negative streaks, calculate return dispersion, and measure the largest peak-to-trough drawdown.
- Freeze the evidence: record the source, retrieval date, exchange timezone, adjustment method and any data revisions.
A chart should show both cumulative growth and weekly returns. The cumulative line answers how the investment path evolved; the return bars reveal the size and frequency of the intervening moves.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Mixing dates: Comparing a Friday close with a later Monday close creates a weekend gap, not a weekly return. Use the final trading session of each week.
- Mixing adjusted and raw prices: The resulting series cannot be interpreted consistently. Rebuild both stock and benchmark from one basis.
- Calling one week a trend: Require evidence from higher highs/lows, a defined streak and volatility before describing direction.
- Ignoring the benchmark: A gain can still be relative underperformance. Show the NIFTY 50 return beside the stock return.
- Attributing a move without verification: Use dated results, annual reports and corporate-action notices; do not treat a nearby headline as proof.
- Using stale figures: The ₹1,382.90 quote, return table, 52-week range and 24.84% volatility are all dated 23 September 2026. Refresh them before publication or an investment decision.
- Overlooking dividends: A raw-price series can understate the investor’s economic return around an ex-dividend date. State whether distributions are included.
- Confusing annualised and weekly volatility: Keep the 24.84% figure labelled annualised and compare like with like.
- Ignoring ownership denominators: Explain whether volume or market-cap calculations use total shares or the 37.24% public shareholding base.
What the current snapshot supports—and what it does not
The 23 September 2026 data support three limited conclusions: the latest reported week was slightly negative for NESTLEIND; the stock had positive reported returns over one, three and five years; and its relative performance varied by window, with underperformance over one week and one month but outperformance over year-to-date, one-year, three-year and five-year periods.
The snapshot does not establish the next week’s direction, identify a guaranteed support level, prove why a particular week moved, or show that past outperformance will continue. Those questions require a refreshed, consistently adjusted time series and verified event dates.
