SoundHound AI’s revenue nearly doubled in 2025, while BigBear.ai’s fell 19.3%. In the second quarter of 2026, both reported year-over-year growth: 45% for SoundHound AI and 13% for BigBear.ai. Those figures tell only part of the story: acquisitions helped lift SoundHound AI’s annual revenue, while BigBear.ai cited lower Army-program volume and contracts that did not repeat. Neither revenue growth nor a smaller net loss, by itself, establishes improved profitability or durable growth.
How did annual revenue compare?
| Company | 2023 revenue | 2024 revenue | 2025 revenue | 2025 change from 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SoundHound AI | not stated (SoundHound AI, 2025 filing) | $84.693 million | $168.920 million | Up 99% |
| BigBear.ai | $155.164 million | $158.236 million | $127.672 million | Down $30.564 million, or 19.3% |
SoundHound AI’s reported revenue rose from $84.693 million in 2024 to $168.920 million in 2025. Its filing reported service-subscription revenue of $133.547 million, up from $56.347 million, and product royalties of $34.913 million, up from $27.964 million. The company attributed $77.2 million of subscription growth to acquired businesses; royalty growth reflected increased license revenue in Asia. The 99% increase is therefore reported growth that includes acquisition contributions, not a measure of organic growth alone. SoundHound AI’s 2025 filing

BigBear.ai’s revenue was comparatively steady from 2023 to 2024, then declined in 2025. The company attributed the reduction chiefly to lower volume on Army programs and significant 2024 contracts that did not recur the following year. That mix makes contract timing and government-program activity important context; its reported revenue is not equivalent to a consumer-software subscription base. BigBear.ai’s 2025 filing
What did both companies report in Q2 2026?
| Company | Q2 2026 revenue | Year-over-year comparison | Gross margin | Net loss | 2026 revenue outlook |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SoundHound AI | $61.9 million | Up 45% | 45.1% GAAP | $42.8 million GAAP | $230–$260 million; company guidance |
| BigBear.ai | $36.749 million | Up 13%, from $32.472 million in Q2 2025 | 32.8%, up from 25.0% | $25.7 million | $135–$165 million; company guidance |
These are matching quarterly periods, making them more useful to compare than one company’s quarter against the other’s full-year result. SoundHound AI said major enterprise AI deals attributed to its OASYS platform drove Q2 growth. It raised its full-year revenue guidance to $230–$260 million; that is management’s forward-looking outlook, not recorded revenue, and the company noted it may be updated in connection with the anticipated LivePerson transaction. BigBear.ai attributed Q2 revenue and margin improvement in part to its Ask Sage GenAI platforms and products. It affirmed full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $135–$165 million. Its Q2 net loss was $25.7 million; the reduction from the year-earlier quarter was partly due to lower non-cash derivative losses and goodwill impairment, so it should not be read as a straightforward operating-profit turnaround. Does revenue growth mean profitability improved?
No. Revenue measures sales, while gross margin and net income or loss address different aspects of financial performance. SoundHound AI’s annual gross margin fell to 42% in 2025 from 49% in 2024; its filing cited factors including acquisition-related intangible amortization. BigBear.ai’s cost of revenue increased to 78% of revenue in 2025 from 71% in 2024. These annual figures indicate that the sharp SoundHound AI revenue increase and BigBear.ai’s 2025 decline should not be treated as a complete verdict on either company’s operating performance.

The Q2 results reinforce the distinction: SoundHound AI reported a 45.1% GAAP gross margin alongside a $42.8 million GAAP net loss, while BigBear.ai reported a 32.8% gross margin and a $25.7 million net loss. Gross margin is not net income, and the quarter’s revenue growth does not erase those losses.

What is the fairest way to read the comparison?
- Compare like periods: annual revenue with annual revenue, and Q2 year over year with Q2 year over year.
- Separate growth sources. SoundHound AI’s 2025 subscription increase included acquired-business contributions; BigBear.ai’s annual decline reflected Army-program volume and nonrecurring contracts.
- Keep business models in view. The companies sell different mixes of AI software and services, and BigBear.ai reports substantial U.S. government revenue.
- Read margins and losses alongside sales. Neither revenue growth nor a smaller net loss alone demonstrates sustained profitability.
- Treat guidance as management’s outlook, not a result already achieved. Historical growth rates do not establish future results.
The clearest contrast is historical: SoundHound AI reported rapid annual expansion in 2025 while BigBear.ai contracted, and both grew in Q2 2026. The drivers, margins, and losses differ enough that ranking the companies on revenue growth alone would leave out essential context.
