How to Read SMART Data and Estimate a Hard Drive’s Remaining Life

SMART can show that a hard drive is developing a problem, but it cannot give you a dependable countdown to failure. A SMART FAIL is a serious warning: copy important files to a separate location immediately, then run the drive maker’s diagnostic and check replacement or warranty options. A SMART PASS only means the reported thresholds have not failed; it is not a promise that the disk will keep working.

SMART values are also model-specific. Raw numbers, normalized scores, attribute names and thresholds can differ between brands and even between drive families. Read the overall status first, then interpret sector counts, temperature and other fields using documentation for the exact model. Never turn one raw value—or a percentage displayed by a utility—into a guaranteed number of months or years remaining.

What SMART is actually measuring

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is firmware in a storage drive that records operating measurements and compares selected attributes with manufacturer-defined thresholds. The drive can report a general state such as Pass or Fail when an attribute crosses its threshold.

That sounds like a universal health score, but it is not. Seagate explains that its thresholds are proprietary and warns that third-party programs may display attributes inconsistently or inaccurately. Western Digital publishes a supported-attribute list for its own SATA hard drives, which illustrates why an ID or raw value must be interpreted in the context of the exact model. A field that looks alarming in one utility may use a different encoding, scale or threshold on another drive.

SMART can monitor several kinds of behavior, including read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature and excessive bad sectors. The exact set of attributes and the way they are encoded depend on the drive design. The technology is therefore best treated as an early-warning system, not a laboratory measurement of mechanical life.

How to read the overall SMART status

SMART PASS

A PASS means the drive has not reported a threshold failure according to its firmware. It does not certify every sector, motor, head or circuit, and it cannot rule out a sudden electronic or mechanical failure. Continue normal backups and investigate unusual noises, repeated operating-system errors or a rapidly changing attribute even when the headline status is PASS.

SMART FAIL

A FAIL means at least one monitored condition has crossed a manufacturer-defined failure threshold. The disk may still boot and open files, which is why a warning should not be dismissed as a false alarm. Seagate describes SMART failure as a near-term prediction but says there is no way to specify when the failure will occur. Its support guidance states: “Unfortunately, there is no way to specifically predict when the failure will occur, so your best response is to back up your data as soon as possible.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not begin with a long surface scan or repeated benchmark. First copy irreplaceable files while the drive is still readable. If the operating system is unstable, copy the most valuable folders first and avoid writes to the suspect disk.

Operating-system alerts

A desktop or server alert may simply expose the same firmware status through a monitoring service. Treat an alert as a prompt to verify the exact drive, record its model and serial number, and preserve data. Do not assume that clearing an alert, rebooting, or reinstalling monitoring software has repaired the underlying condition.

Why raw values, normalized values and thresholds differ

SMART utilities commonly show a normalized “value,” a “worst” value, a threshold and a raw field. These columns are not interchangeable. A normalized value may be scaled by the manufacturer; the raw field may contain a count, a timer, or packed data; and the threshold is the vendor’s trigger for that particular attribute. Two drives can show the same raw number while representing different conditions.

Western Digital’s documentation marks some attributes as Pre-Failure and others as Advisory. Those labels identify how the device treats an attribute; they are not a remaining-life percentage and do not predict a universal failure date. Seagate likewise cautions that third-party displays can be inconsistent. Use a utility to locate a warning, then consult the drive maker’s documentation or diagnostic for the exact model and interface.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

When comparing repeated readings, keep the following constant:

  • the same physical drive and firmware version;
  • the same monitoring program, because different programs may decode fields differently;
  • the same attribute and column (raw versus normalized); and
  • the same units and sampling conditions.

A trend is more informative than an isolated number, but a trend still cannot establish a failure date.

Important SMART attributes and what they can—and cannot—tell you

Attribute Common identifier What it records How to use it Western Digital classification
Re-allocated Sector Count ID 5 Sectors the drive has already removed from service and replaced with spare sectors. A rising count can indicate worsening media problems. The encoding and threshold are model-specific; do not apply a universal cutoff. Pre-Failure
Power-on Hours Count ID 9 Accumulated operating time reported by the drive. Useful for context and workload history, not as a direct measure of life left. Hours alone do not determine replacement timing. Advisory
Current Pending Sector Count ID 197 Sectors that could not be read reliably and are waiting for a later read or reallocation decision. Indicates read trouble. Backblaze describes an uncorrectable medium read error being marked pending in its fleet. Watch whether the count appears or rises, but do not convert it to a time estimate. Advisory
Offline Scan Uncorrectable Sector Count ID 198 Errors found during an offline scan that could not be corrected. Shows a scan found uncorrectable sectors. It is a risk signal, not a lifespan clock. Advisory

The classifications and IDs in the table come from Western Digital’s supported-attribute documentation, updated July 22, 2026. They should not be assumed to apply identically to another manufacturer’s drive.

Reallocated sectors

When a drive cannot use a sector reliably, it may substitute a spare location and increment a reallocation counter. A nonzero value does not reveal when the next failure will happen; the important practical signal is whether the count is changing and whether files or diagnostics also report errors. Because the drive has already consumed some spare capacity, a rising count deserves prompt backup and a diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pending sectors

A pending sector is not necessarily permanently bad. The firmware may resolve it after a later successful write or read, or it may reallocate the location if the error persists. Until resolved, however, data in that area may be difficult to read. If a pending count appears on a disk holding important files, make the backup before deliberately stressing the disk with scans.

Offline uncorrectable sectors

This field records sectors an offline test could not correct. It can corroborate a media problem, but it does not say whether the disk will fail tomorrow or continue for years. Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic result and the direction of change to decide on replacement rather than a single number.

Power-on hours

Power-on hours describe elapsed operation. They can help explain why two otherwise similar drives have different workloads, but they are not an odometer with a fixed end point. A lightly used older disk can fail suddenly, while a heavily used disk can continue operating; SMART does not turn the hour count into a remaining-life percentage.

Temperature and other monitored conditions

High temperature, read retries, slow spin-up and excessive bad sectors are examples of conditions Seagate says SMART may monitor. What counts as high, how long a condition must persist and which threshold applies are design decisions made by the manufacturer. If temperature is the only warning, inspect ventilation and fans, but do not assume cooling has eliminated a separate media or electronics fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SMART calculate a hard drive’s remaining life?

Not reliably for an individual consumer HDD. A SMART snapshot is a collection of current and historical indicators, not a calibrated time-to-failure model. Seagate explicitly says that even a SMART FAIL cannot specify when failure will occur.

Research on large fleets can find correlations between attributes and failures for particular models. Backblaze’s SMART statistics documentation, dated May 10, 2023, presents model-linked relationships rather than a universal formula. Its Q3 2025 drive-statistics explanation describes collection and failure handling in its own data-center fleet. Those results can help fleet operators decide what to monitor, but they do not convert into a dependable countdown for a different drive, workload, enclosure, temperature or workload pattern.

If a program displays “90% health” or “life remaining: 240 days,” treat that figure as the program’s interpretation of reported fields. The available HDD documentation does not establish a universal percentage scale or a general consumer prediction-accuracy figure. Use the display to prioritize a backup and diagnostic, not to schedule a replacement at the predicted date.

How to judge a drive using repeated readings

A single reading can be misleading because utilities may decode attributes differently or because a transient event has not been resolved. A cautious comparison uses the same model-specific attributes over time and combines them with independent evidence.

Comparison axis What to record Why it matters
Overall threshold status PASS or FAIL, with the date and exact drive identifier. A FAIL is a manufacturer-level warning even if the operating system still works.
Sector-related fields IDs 5, 197 and 198 where the drive supports them; record raw and normalized columns separately. A new or rising count can show worsening media or read conditions.
Diagnostic result The manufacturer’s test name, date and pass/fail result. It is more authoritative for that drive than a generic utility’s interpretation.
Error history Operating-system read/write errors, file corruption, unusual noises and recurring alerts. Real-world symptoms can matter even when SMART remains PASS.
Environment Temperature trend, airflow, enclosure and workload. Heat or vibration can change operating conditions without proving a permanent internal fault.
Protection and replacement practicality Whether a verified backup exists, replacement hardware is available and warranty coverage applies. The safest decision depends on the value of the data and the ability to restore it, not on age alone.

There is no manufacturer-backed universal score that combines these columns into “months left.” If two drives are being assessed, compare equivalent fields only after confirming that both models support and encode them in the same way.

What to do when SMART warns you

  1. Identify the affected disk. Record the model, serial number, capacity and connection. In a multi-drive computer, verify which disk generated the alert before copying or replacing anything.
  2. Back up important files immediately. Copy them to a separate device or another independent location. Prioritize irreplaceable documents, photographs, project files and recovery keys. Seagate’s guidance says a system SMART error means you should back up as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups.
  3. Reduce unnecessary stress. Avoid benchmarks, defragmentation, repeated surface scans and large writes until the critical data is safe. If normal copying repeatedly fails, preserve what is readable first rather than repeatedly retrying one damaged file.
  4. Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic. Seagate identifies SeaTools as its utility for checking SMART parameters and performing drive tests. Use the instructions for the exact drive and interface; a test designed for one connection type may not expose every condition on another.
  5. Interpret the test result. Seagate says a failed SeaTools test means the drive needs replacement. A SMART FAIL may also qualify for warranty replacement. Save the diagnostic code or report because a support claim may require it.
  6. Arrange replacement and restore. Install a replacement only after confirming that the backup can be opened. Keep the suspect disk untouched until you have verified the restored files and decided whether it is needed for further recovery.

Do not postpone the backup while waiting for a more precise prediction. SMART cannot supply that prediction.

What to do about a temperature warning

First verify that the temperature reading belongs to the correct drive and that the utility is using the drive’s reported units. Then inspect case airflow, dust buildup, fans and the drive’s mounting position. Seagate lists high temperature as one condition SMART may monitor and advises checking ventilation and fans.

Cooling may remove an environmental contributor, but it does not prove that reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors have been repaired. Continue to rely on the backup, model-specific attributes and the manufacturer’s diagnostic. If the warning returns after airflow is corrected, plan replacement rather than treating the lower temperature as a clean bill of health.

Common mistakes when interpreting SMART

Reading a raw number as a universal limit

There is no cross-brand rule such as “five reallocated sectors means exactly six months.” Thresholds, spare-area policies and raw encodings vary. Use the exact model’s documentation and the change over time.

Assuming PASS means safe indefinitely

PASS only means the reported threshold conditions have not failed. It does not test every possible failure mode and does not replace a current backup.

Waiting for a visible failure

A disk can remain usable after a SMART warning, but continued operation can reduce the opportunity to copy data. Back up first, then test.

Running a stressful test before copying files

Long scans and repeated retries can consume time on a disk that is already struggling. Use them only after important data is protected and follow the manufacturer’s procedure.

Trusting a percentage from an unknown utility

A “life remaining” percentage is an interpretation of SMART fields. It is not a guarantee, and the reviewed HDD documentation does not establish a universal accuracy rate for such percentages.

Worked examples

Example: PASS with a rising reallocated count

A utility reports PASS, but ID 5 has increased between two readings. The correct response is not to calculate a deadline. Confirm that the same drive and column were read, copy important data, and run the manufacturer’s diagnostic. A rising count is evidence of changing conditions even before the overall threshold flips to FAIL.

Example: Pending sectors after a read error

ID 197 appears after the operating system logs a read error. Protect the files first. The pending sector may later be read successfully or reallocated, but until the drive resolves it, data in that area is at risk. Use the diagnostic result and subsequent readings to decide replacement; do not infer a number of days from the count.

Example: SMART FAIL but the computer still boots

Booting demonstrates only that enough data is currently readable. Treat the FAIL as serious, copy files promptly, run the maker’s diagnostic after the backup, and check warranty eligibility. Continued operation is not evidence that the warning is harmless.

Example: High temperature with no sector errors

Check airflow and fans, then continue monitoring. If the temperature returns to a normal range and no other errors appear, the environment may have contributed to the alert, but the change does not prove the drive has no latent fault. Keep the backup and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

How fleet statistics should influence personal decisions

Backblaze publishes SMART statistics and drive-failure data from its own fleet. Its May 10, 2023 SMART documentation discusses correlations by attribute and model, while its Q3 2025 explanation documents the company’s data-center collection and failure methodology. Such evidence can reveal that a particular attribute behaves differently across models, but fleet averages describe populations under specific workloads and environments.

For a home or small-office disk, use those studies as context rather than a personal forecast. Your drive may have different firmware, duty cycle, temperature, vibration, enclosure, workload and maintenance history. The practical action remains the same when a confirmed SMART warning appears: protect the data, diagnose the exact drive and replace it when the diagnostic or warranty process indicates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise decision framework

  • SMART FAIL, unreadable files or a failed manufacturer diagnostic: treat the drive as failing; preserve data and replace it.
  • PASS with rising sector-related counts or recurring read errors: back up now, run the manufacturer’s diagnostic and prepare a replacement even if the drive still operates.
  • PASS with stable attributes and no symptoms: keep regular, independent backups and monitor using the same model-aware utility; do not claim a specific remaining lifespan.
  • Temperature-only warning: correct airflow and fans, then reassess; cooling does not erase evidence of media or electronics problems.

The value of SMART is early action. It can tell you when the risk has become serious enough to protect data and investigate replacement. It cannot tell you the exact day an individual hard drive will stop working.
