The company’s Q2 2026 results, released July 28, 2026, show why: consolidated sales rose 7.5%, but Paint Stores Group margin edged down year over year.
Start with the period and comparison
Identify the quarter and the year-over-year comparison before interpreting a percentage. Sherwin-Williams’ Q2 2026 release compares the quarter with Q2 2025. This same-quarter comparison helps avoid confusing seasonal shifts with underlying growth.

Next, read consolidated net sales, then look inside the three reporting groups—Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings. Consolidated growth tells you the overall direction; segment results show where it came from. In Q2 2026, consolidated net sales increased 7.5% to $6.79 billion. The company’s release discusses price, volume, acquisitions, currency translation and product mix as drivers across its businesses, so sales growth should not automatically be read as unit growth. For Paint Stores Group, total sales include more than the performance of established locations. Sherwin-Williams defines same-store sales as net sales from Paint Stores Group locations open for more than twelve calendar months. It reported Q2 2026 total segment sales growth of 5.1% and same-store sales growth of 4.2%.

Use same-store sales to assess locations that meet that threshold; use total segment sales to understand the broader business, including the effects of new stores and other factors. Neither figure alone explains the mix of price and unit volume. For that, look for the company’s specific breakdown: management said Q2 Paint Stores Group gains primarily reflected selling-price increases contributing a mid-single-digit percentage and low-single-digit sales-volume growth. Compare profit growth with margin
Segment margin is segment profit as a share of segment sales. It answers a different question from sales growth: how much segment profit the company generated per dollar of segment revenue.

In Q2 2026, Paint Stores Group sales increased 5.1%, while segment profit increased 4.5%. Its reported segment margin was 24.6%, versus 24.8% in Q2 2025. Sales and profit both grew, but profit grew more slowly, and the margin slipped. That is the practical answer to why sales can rise while margins fall: revenue growth does not ensure that costs grow more slowly.
Management attributed Paint Stores Group profit growth primarily to higher sales, partly offset by moderately higher raw-material costs and costs of supporting sales, including additional sales representatives and stores. The company also described broader inflation across raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging. CEO Heidi G. Petz said the company was responding with pricing actions, including an announced 8% Paint Stores Group price increase effective September 1, 2026. Keep reported and adjusted earnings distinct
Reported earnings reflect the company’s stated accounting results. Adjusted earnings exclude specified items, which can include acquisition-related amortization and restructuring costs. The measures are not interchangeable: check the reconciliation and exclusions before comparing adjusted earnings with reported figures from another period.
For context, Q1 2026 diluted EPS increased 7.5%, while adjusted diluted EPS increased 4.4%. The difference illustrates why a headline growth rate depends on which earnings measure is being used. The release also reported Q1 consolidated net sales of $5.67 billion, up 6.8%, including a 1.7% favorable currency-translation impact; it cited higher sales across segments and the Suvinil acquisition as contributors. The Q2 2026 full-year guidance makes the adjustment explicit: Sherwin-Williams forecast diluted EPS of $10.92–$11.32 and adjusted diluted EPS of $11.80–$12.20. The company said adjusted guidance excluded $0.81 per share of Valspar-related amortization and $0.07 per share of restructuring costs. Read guidance as a dated forecast
Guidance is management’s expectation, not a result already achieved. The July 28, 2026 Q2 release expected Q3 consolidated sales to rise mid-to-high single digits and raised full-year 2026 sales guidance to mid-to-high-single-digit growth. Full-year adjusted diluted EPS guidance was $11.80–$12.20 per share, with the exclusions described above.

When assessing a forecast, note the release date, its range or growth wording, and whether management raised, lowered or maintained the prior outlook. Then compare it with the prior-year base and subsequent company updates. Guidance can change as conditions and assumptions change; the Q2 release’s forecast should not be presented as the company’s current outlook beyond that dated release. Use earlier quarters to test the pattern
A single quarter is easier to interpret when set beside earlier results—but keep the periods and earnings measures consistent. In Q4 2025, net sales increased 5.6% while income before taxes increased 3.8%. The company attributed the profit increase principally to higher sales, partly offset by growth investments, Suvinil-related costs including higher interest expense, costs for new headquarters and research facilities, trademark impairment, restructuring actions and foreign-currency transaction losses. Q4 diluted EPS also included disclosed acquisition-amortization, restructuring and trademark-impairment charges.
This example is a reminder to read the explanation of costs and any stated exceptional charges alongside the headline sales and earnings numbers. It does not establish that the same factors affected Q2 2026 in the same way. Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 year-end and Q4 results

- Set the frame: record the quarter, comparison period and release date.
- Locate growth: compare consolidated sales with Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings results.
- Assess growth quality: distinguish same-store sales from total Paint Stores Group sales, and separate price, volume, mix, acquisitions and currency when disclosed.
- Check profitability: compare segment profit growth with sales growth, then track margin direction and management’s stated cost factors.
- Match earnings measures: identify whether each EPS number is reported or adjusted, and note every stated exclusion.
- Mark the forecast: capture guidance, its assumptions or exclusions, and any revision relative to the prior outlook.
