How to Read RPM International’s Earnings Report: Sales, Margins, and Guidance

To read RPM International’s earnings report, separate reported results from adjusted measures, trace sales growth to its sources, compare performance across the company’s three segments, and treat guidance as a forecast rather than a result. In RPM’s fiscal 2027 first quarter, sales rose 4.8%, but organic growth was 3.1%; adjusted EBITDA grew 4.5%, and the company revised its full-year outlook to mid-single-digit growth for sales and adjusted EBITDA.

Confirm the reporting period first

RPM’s fiscal 2027 first quarter covered the three months ended August 31, 2026. The company issued its results on October 6, 2026. Those dates matter: the fiscal-quarter label is not the same as a calendar-quarter label. RPM’s quarterly-results page organizes releases alongside related materials, including filings, presentations, transcripts, and webcasts.

Start with sales, then ask what drove the change

RPM reported net sales of $2.216 billion, up from $2.114 billion in the year-earlier quarter, a 4.8% increase. The headline growth rate combines different sources of change, so it is useful to read the company’s breakdown as well:

  • Organic growth: 3.1%. This is the portion attributed to underlying business activity, excluding the effects of acquisitions, divestitures, and currency.
  • Acquisitions, net of divestitures: 1.6%. This shows the net contribution from changes to the portfolio.
  • Foreign currency: 0.1%. Currency movements added slightly to reported growth.

The components explain why a reported increase is not automatically equivalent to underlying demand growth. For comparisons with another quarter, use the same categories and check whether portfolio changes or exchange rates have materially changed.

Distinguish GAAP results from adjusted measures

RPM reported net income attributable to stockholders of $256.4 million and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.01. It also reported adjusted diluted EPS of $1.98, up 5.3%, and adjusted EBITDA of $405.5 million, up 4.5%. These figures are not interchangeable: GAAP results follow standardized accounting rules, while adjusted measures exclude specified items.

RPM labels EBIT, adjusted EBIT, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted EPS as non-GAAP measures and provides reconciliations. In the quarter, consolidated EBIT was $355.1 million, adjusted EBIT was $352.7 million, and adjusted EBITDA was $405.5 million. EBIT means earnings before interest and taxes; EBITDA adds depreciation and amortization to EBIT. The adjusted versions also reflect the company’s stated exclusions. Read the reconciliation to see which items were adjusted rather than assuming “adjusted” simply means ordinary operating profit.

RPM says its adjustments are for items management does not consider indicative of ongoing operations. The company also cautions that non-GAAP measures are not substitutes for GAAP measures and that its adjusted EBITDA may not be comparable with similarly named measures used by other companies. A sound comparison therefore keeps both views visible: GAAP figures show reported results, while the reconciled adjusted figures offer management’s chosen view of certain operating trends.

Read margins using the right numerator

A margin is a profit measure divided by sales, but the result depends on which profit measure is used. RPM reported gross profit of $914.0 million on $2.216 billion of sales. Using those reported figures, gross margin is approximately 41.3% ($914.0 million ÷ $2.216 billion). That percentage is a calculation from the release’s figures, not a separately quoted company metric.

For a year-over-year margin comparison, calculate both periods with the same formula and consistent figures. Do not call EBIT margin “gross margin”: gross profit is measured before operating expenses, while EBIT reflects a different level of the income statement. Adjusted EBIT and adjusted EBITDA margins use still different profit numerators and should be named accordingly.

Use the segments to locate the source of growth

RPM reports results for Construction Products Group (CPG), Performance Coatings Group (PCG), and Consumer Group. Q1 segment sales were $859.2 million for CPG, $629.7 million for PCG, and $726.7 million for Consumer. Segment sales show where revenue sits; the release’s segment earnings and management discussion help explain whether the sources of growth are translating into profitability.

  • Performance Coatings Group: RPM said record sales were supported by engineered solutions and pricing.
  • Construction Products Group: The company cited delayed sales, raw-material availability issues, and lower fixed-cost absorption. Lower fixed-cost absorption means fixed manufacturing costs are spread across less production or sales, which can pressure profitability.
  • Consumer Group: RPM attributed sales support to growth across businesses, shelf-space wins, new products, and pricing.

These explanations help connect segment results to possible drivers such as volume, pricing, acquisitions, inflation, and operating efficiency. They are management’s account of the quarter, not a guarantee that those factors will persist.

Account for the reporting change

Effective June 1, 2026, RPM moved certain Latin American businesses into PCG for reporting purposes. The company says the Q1 release presents both current and prior periods using the updated segment structure, and that the change does not affect consolidated results. When comparing segment figures across older reports, check whether they have been recast; otherwise, the apparent movement between segments may reflect classification rather than a change in the underlying consolidated business.

Compare guidance with the period it covers

RPM’s Q2 fiscal 2027 outlook called for low- to mid-single-digit growth in both consolidated sales and adjusted EBITDA. For the full fiscal year, management projected mid-single-digit growth in both measures, replacing its previous ranges of 3%–7% sales growth and 5%–10% adjusted EBITDA growth.

Keep each projection attached to its horizon and measure: a quarterly sales outlook is not the same as a full-year adjusted EBITDA outlook. Guidance is management’s expectation, not a reported result or a guarantee. RPM identifies uncertainties that could affect forward-looking statements, including economic conditions, raw-material prices and availability, demand, foreign exchange, trade policy, acquisitions and divestitures, and execution of restructuring plans.

Check cash flow and debt alongside earnings

For the quarter, RPM reported operating cash flow of $263.9 million and capital expenditures of $58.5 million. Total debt was $2.41 billion as of August 31, 2026. Cash flow provides a different view from accounting earnings, while capital spending and debt add context about investment and financing. Compare these figures with consistently dated periods and definitions; a single quarter’s cash flow should not be treated as a full-year run rate.

A practical checklist for the next RPM report

  1. Confirm the fiscal period covered and the release date.
  2. Compare net sales with the year-earlier period, then separate organic growth, acquisitions or divestitures, and currency effects.
  3. Read GAAP net income and diluted EPS alongside adjusted EPS and EBITDA; use RPM’s reconciliation to identify adjustments.
  4. Calculate or compare margins only with the same profit measure and formula.
  5. Use segment sales, earnings, and management’s explanations to identify where growth or pressure came from; account for reporting-structure changes.
  6. Keep quarterly and full-year guidance separate, and compare revised ranges with the prior outlook.
  7. Review operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and debt with their dates and periods attached.

For the latest quarter’s figures and explanations, use RPM’s October 6, 2026 release and its associated materials from the company’s quarterly-results index.
