How to Read Ocean Buoy Data and Find Its Location

To find an ocean buoy and understand its report, start with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). Search by the buoy’s five-digit station ID, browse the station list, or select a marker on the map. Open the station profile to confirm its position, then choose the current or historical observation view. Before interpreting any number, align the report time zone, check the units, and identify the sensor and averaging period behind the measurement.

NDBC pages and coded reports do not all present data in the same way. A station page normally opens in local time while coded examples use UTC; wind direction means the direction the air is coming from; and wave heights may describe significant seas, wind waves, or swell. The guide below shows how to locate the right station, decode the common fields, compare observations safely, and troubleshoot apparently missing or contradictory values.

Find the buoy and verify its location

Search by the five-digit station ID

If you already have an identifier such as a buoy number from a forecast, ship report, research paper, or alert, enter that five-digit station ID in NDBC’s station search. The result should open a station profile rather than a generic list of nearby observations. Confirm that the station name and identifier match the one you intended; similarly named stations can be in different waters.

The station profile is the best location reference for that station. It can include the station’s position, ownership information, sensor elevations, and the categories of observations it reports, including conditions, air measurements, waves, and temperatures. Read the profile before interpreting a value from a downloaded or copied report, because the profile supplies the context needed to know what the numbers represent.

Browse the station list or use the map

When you do not know the identifier, browse NDBC’s station list or select a marker on its map. A map click is useful for discovering stations in a region, but always open the resulting profile and check the identifier and coordinates. The map is a discovery tool; the station profile is the reference you should cite when you need to state where a buoy is.

Search observations by area or radius

NDBC’s observation search can start with a selected observation and a time, then narrow the results by map area or by a latitude-and-longitude radius. This is useful when a forecast mentions a region rather than a specific buoy. Set the center point and radius deliberately, note the search time, and inspect each returned station profile before deciding which buoy is relevant. A radius search can return several stations with different exposure, sensor heights, or reporting schedules.

Understand coordinates in coded reports

Coded FM-13 examples show a station identifier and groups for latitude and longitude. One worked example uses 25.9° N and 85.9° W. Those coordinates illustrate the format only; they are not the location of every station and should not be substituted for the selected station’s profile. If a coded message and the profile appear inconsistent, verify the station ID, report time, and message type before drawing a conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose current or historical observations

The right data page depends on how far back you need to look. NDBC describes its real-time files as generally containing the latest 45 days of “Realtime” data that have passed automated quality checks and are distributed as received. That is a service description, not a guarantee that every station has a complete, uninterrupted 45-day record. For earlier years, use the historical observation search.

What you need NDBC option What to check
Latest available readings Real-time station observations Whether the station is currently reporting, the timestamp of the newest record, and any gaps in the recent series.
Recent event within the real-time window Real-time files and station observations The file’s update time and the observation’s own timestamp; an updated file can contain an older last observation if the station has stopped transmitting.
A prior-year storm, season, or research date Historical observation search The year, station ID, time zone, units, and whether the selected record is quality-controlled or otherwise flagged.
Longer-term comparison Historical records for each station Matching stations, sampling definitions, sensor heights, and the exact periods being compared.

Do not treat the absence of a recent record as a zero reading. It may indicate a communications outage, a station that is not reporting, a maintenance period, or a field that the message does not include. Check the station page for current availability and the record’s timestamp.

Align time zones, units, and timestamps before reading numbers

UTC in coded reports and local time on station pages

NDBC coded report examples express report time in UTC. Station pages default to local time but provide a way to switch the display to UTC. Use one time zone consistently when comparing stations or matching a buoy report to a weather-system track. A reading labeled 14:00 local is not directly comparable with a 14:00 UTC reading unless you know the station’s local offset and date.

Record the observation timestamp, not merely the time you opened the page. The timestamp tells you whether a front, squall line, or swell train had reached the buoy at the moment represented by the data. Around a time-zone or date boundary, write the date and zone together so that an observation cannot be shifted by one calendar day.

Confirm units and definitions

Read the units shown on the particular data page or in its decoder description. Temperature, pressure, wind speed, wave height, and wave period can be expressed in different units or with different conventions. Convert only after recording the original value and definition. Two values with the same unit label can still be incomparable if one is an instantaneous sample and the other is an average over a stated interval.

Understand the main parts of a buoy report

Station identity and position

The station identifier ties the observation to the profile. Coordinate groups in a coded message provide a position for that report, while the station profile gives the practical location reference readers normally need. Keep the identifier with any copied value; a number without its station and timestamp is not a usable observation.

Report time

The time field establishes when the sensors observed or summarized conditions. It is essential for comparing two stations, reconstructing a weather event, or checking whether a value is stale. Distinguish the observation time from a file-download time or web-page refresh time.

Wind and atmospheric observations

Common groups include wind direction, wind speed, gust information, air temperature, dew point, and pressure. A particular message may omit one or more groups. An omitted group means that the value was not supplied in that report; it does not mean the measured quantity was zero.

Sea-water temperature and wave information

Depending on the station and message, the report can include sea-water temperature and several wave fields. Read the field labels and definitions rather than assuming that every height is the same kind of sea state. The wave section below explains the distinctions.

Read wind direction, speed, and gusts correctly

Direction is where the wind comes from

A wind reported from 270 degrees is coming from the west and moving toward the east. This “from” convention differs from the direction a current or a moving object is traveling. When describing impacts, state both the reported direction and, if needed, the direction of travel to avoid reversing the meaning.

Speed depends on averaging and sensor height

Wind speed is meaningful only with its averaging definition and sensor height. One station may report a short averaging interval while another reports a longer average; a gust may use yet another interval. NOAA notes that reporting frequency, sensor heights, and averaging periods differ among networks and stations. When comparing two buoys, put those details beside the speeds instead of treating the larger number as proof of stronger conditions at the same height and time scale.

A gust is not automatically the same statistic as the sustained wind. Check the field label and the stated gust period. If the report provides only a sustained value, do not infer a gust from it. If a gust field is missing, record it as unavailable rather than as calm wind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use time and exposure with wind

Two stations can report different winds during the same hour because they sit in different exposures or because their sensors are at different elevations. Compare the station positions, nearby land or structures, sensor heights, and averaging periods before attributing the difference to a weather feature. A timestamp that differs by even one reporting interval can matter during a rapidly changing squall.

Interpret temperature and pressure fields

Air temperature and dew point

Air temperature describes the measured air at the sensor. Dew point indicates the temperature at which that air would become saturated under the relevant pressure, so the gap between air temperature and dew point helps describe near-surface moisture. Use the units displayed by the station and do not compare a buoy’s air sensor with a shore station without considering exposure and height.

Station pressure and sea-level pressure

A report may contain station pressure, sea-level pressure, or both. Station pressure is the pressure at the instrument’s elevation. Sea-level pressure is adjusted to a common reference level for weather-map comparison. They are not interchangeable; use the field name supplied by NDBC and keep the adjustment convention with the value.

Sea-water temperature

Sea-water temperature is measured at a sensor depth and location associated with that station. The station information and data page provide the relevant context. Do not assume it represents the entire water column or a nearby beach. When comparing stations, check whether the sensor depths and sampling times are comparable.

Read wave height and period

Significant wave height

Significant wave height is the average height of the highest one-third of all waves in the measured wave record. It is a statistical description of the sea, not the height of every wave and not a guaranteed maximum. Individual waves can be lower or higher than the significant height.

Wind-wave height

Wind-wave height applies the same highest-one-third averaging idea to the locally generated wind-wave component. It describes waves produced by winds acting in the nearby area, so it can respond quickly when local wind speed or direction changes.

Swell height and period

Swell is generated farther away and travels into the buoy’s area. Swell generally has a longer period than locally generated wind waves. A report can therefore show modest local wind-wave height alongside a noticeable, longer-period swell. Read the swell height and its period together; a height without its wave type or period is incomplete.

Wave period is part of the meaning

Wave period is the time between successive wave crests in the relevant wave group. It helps distinguish short, locally generated chop from longer-period swell. Compare period definitions and the associated wave category when evaluating two observations. Do not rank sea conditions from height alone when one value describes significant combined seas and the other describes swell.

Compare two buoys or two observations without misleading yourself

Use the following comparison order. It prevents a unit or metadata difference from being mistaken for a real environmental change.

  1. Match the observation time. Put both timestamps in UTC or both in the same local zone, including the date.
  2. Confirm the station positions. Check each profile’s coordinates, exposure, and nearby coastline or structures.
  3. Match units. Record the original units and convert only after confirming that the fields have the same definition.
  4. Check wind metadata. Compare sensor heights, reporting frequency, averaging intervals, and gust periods.
  5. Match the wave measure. Distinguish significant wave height, wind-wave height, and swell height, and include the relevant period.
  6. Check availability and gaps. A missing interval or stale timestamp can explain an apparent difference.
  7. Preserve the station ID. Keep each value tied to its identifier and profile so that the comparison can be reproduced.
Comparison axis Question to ask Why it changes the result
Time and time zone Are the observations simultaneous in UTC? A moving front or swell can change conditions between reporting times.
Position and exposure Are the stations in the same water mass and exposed to the same fetch? Coastlines, islands, and shelter alter wind and waves.
Units and field definition Do both values measure the same quantity? Station pressure, sea-level pressure, significant seas, wind waves, and swell are different fields.
Sensor height or depth Are wind sensors at comparable heights and water sensors at comparable depths? Measurements vary with elevation and depth.
Averaging period Are wind and gust values averaged over the same interval? Short and long averages respond differently to bursts and lulls.
Data status Is either record missing, delayed, or flagged? An absent or stale value is not evidence of calm conditions.

A worked reading of a coded example

Suppose a coded FM-13 example shows a station identifier, coordinate groups corresponding to 25.9° N and 85.9° W, a UTC report time, a wind group, pressure and temperature groups, and wave groups. Read it in this order:

  1. Use the identifier to open the matching NDBC profile.
  2. Use the profile, not the illustrative coordinates alone, to confirm the station’s current location reference.
  3. Keep the report time in UTC and write the date with it.
  4. Decode wind direction as the direction the wind comes from, then check the speed’s averaging interval and sensor height.
  5. Separate air temperature, dew point, station pressure, sea-level pressure, and sea-water temperature if each field is present.
  6. Identify whether the wave value is significant, wind-wave, or swell height, and read its period alongside it.
  7. If a group is absent, mark that field unavailable. Do not insert zero.

This example demonstrates the layout and conventions. It does not establish the coordinates, weather, or wave conditions of every buoy, and it should not be used as a substitute for the selected station’s live or historical profile.

Common problems and how to fix them

The map shows a station, but the page has no recent reading

Check the station’s newest observation timestamp and status information. A map marker can remain useful for identifying a station even when transmissions are delayed or unavailable. Switch to the historical search if you need an earlier date, and report the gap rather than treating it as zero conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The time appears wrong by several hours

Look at the station-page time-zone control and switch to UTC when comparing with coded reports or other stations. Verify the date as well as the clock time, especially near midnight or a daylight-saving transition.

A field is blank or missing from one message

NDBC’s decoder warns that some message groups may not appear in an individual report. Compare the field list for the station and message type, then record the value as unavailable when it is absent. Do not infer calm wind, zero waves, or a normal temperature from a blank field.

Two stations disagree sharply

First check time, units, position, exposure, sensor height, and averaging period. Then determine whether you are comparing different wave categories or station pressure with sea-level pressure. Only after those checks should you interpret the difference as an environmental signal.

The coded coordinates do not match a remembered location

Verify the station identifier and report type. The coordinates in a worked decoder example are illustrative, and a station profile is the authoritative practical reference for the selected station. Do not generalize one example’s coordinates to other buoys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable workflow for an event or research question

  1. Define the question. Decide whether you need the latest conditions, a specific historical date, or a comparison across stations.
  2. Locate candidates. Search by station ID, browse the list, or use the map and area/radius observation search.
  3. Verify identity. Open each profile and record the station ID, coordinates, ownership or network information, sensor elevations, and available measurement categories.
  4. Select the time range. Use real-time data for the current service window and historical search for prior-year observations or older events.
  5. Normalize metadata. Set a common time zone, write down units, and record wind heights, averaging periods, wave categories, and periods.
  6. Read the fields. Decode direction, speed, temperatures, pressures, sea-water temperature, and waves without filling absent groups with zeros.
  7. Check plausibility and gaps. Look for stale timestamps, missing groups, and abrupt changes that coincide with a passing system or a reporting interruption.
  8. Save a reproducible note. Keep the station ID, profile location, observation timestamp, data view, units, and definitions with any value you quote.

Quick reference: what each field tells you

Field or concept How to read it Important qualification
Station ID Five-digit identifier used to locate the profile and records. Always keep it with the observation.
Coordinates Position shown in the profile or coordinate groups in a coded report. A decoder example is illustrative; verify the selected station’s profile.
Time Moment represented by the observation. Coded examples use UTC; station pages default to local time but can switch to UTC.
Wind direction Direction the wind comes from. Check units, sensor height, and averaging period.
Wind speed or gust Measured or summarized air motion. Reporting frequency, height, and averaging definitions differ.
Air temperature and dew point Near-surface atmospheric temperature and moisture indicators. Use the station’s stated units and exposure.
Station pressure Pressure at the instrument’s elevation. Do not substitute it for sea-level pressure.
Sea-level pressure Pressure adjusted to a common reference level. Use the supplied field definition.
Sea-water temperature Water temperature at the station’s sensor. Sensor depth and location matter.
Significant wave height Average height of the highest one-third of all waves. It is not a maximum-wave guarantee.
Wind-wave height Highest-one-third average for locally generated wind waves. Compare only with the same wave category.
Swell height and period Highest-one-third average for swell arriving from farther away, with its period. Swell generally has a longer period than local wind waves.
Missing group No value supplied in that report. It is not a zero reading.
