What Nifty spot and Nifty futures actually represent
The Nifty 50 spot value is the index level calculated from its constituent shares. It is a reference number, not a security you can buy or sell directly in the same way as a futures contract.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A Nifty 50 future is a standardized exchange-traded contract whose underlying is the Nifty 50 index. The contract has a stated expiry month and a traded price. Several contracts can exist at the same time, so “Nifty futures” is incomplete unless you name the expiry.

First make the comparison like-for-like
Match the expiry
Compare spot with one specified futures contract, such as the near-month contract expiring in a stated month. Do not compare a near-month futures quote with a far-month quote and treat the difference as one basis. Each maturity has a different amount of financing time, expected dividends and liquidity.
| Item to identify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Near month | Usually the shortest remaining time to expiry in the three-month cycle. |
| Mid month | A later expiry with a different carry period and potentially different trading activity. |
| Far month | The longest listed maturity; its futures/spot gap reflects the longest remaining carry period. |
| Expiry date | NSE’s displayed specification uses Tuesday expiry, moved to the previous trading day for a Tuesday holiday. |
Match the timestamp and quote type
Record the time shown beside both numbers. A live spot index and a futures price from an earlier trade are not a valid instantaneous comparison. Likewise, a closing spot value should be compared with the corresponding futures close or exchange-defined settlement value, not an unrelated intraday quote.
- Live or streaming quote: the value being updated during trading.
- Last traded price: the price of the most recent transaction; it may be stale when trading is thin.
- Close: a session-end value calculated under the relevant market’s rules.
- Official settlement: the exchange value used for marking positions and settlement, which can follow a specified calculation rather than simply copying the last displayed trade.
Calculate the basis consistently
Use one sign convention throughout your analysis:
Basis = futures price − spot index level
A positive basis means the futures quote is above spot. A negative basis means it is below spot. The size is measured in Nifty index points. If you want a percentage, divide the point difference by spot and multiply by 100, while retaining the original point difference for clarity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, if a contract and spot are observed at the same moment, subtract the spot level from that contract’s futures price. Label the result with the expiry, timestamp and quote type. A basis without those labels is difficult to interpret or reproduce.
Do not mix an index level with a different observation
Spot can move while a futures quote is unchanged between trades. That can make a basis appear unusually wide or narrow even though the difference is only a timing mismatch. Refresh both values or use synchronized historical records before drawing a conclusion.
Why futures can be above or below spot
A simplified cost-of-carry model treats fair futures value as spot adjusted for the cost of financing, expected dividends and the time left before expiry. In continuous-compounding notation, the relationship can be represented as:
F ≈ S × e^((r − q) × T)
- F is the theoretical futures value.
- S is the spot index level.
- r is the relevant financing rate.
- q is the expected dividend yield over the period.
- T is time to expiry, expressed in years.
When financing exceeds expected dividend yield, the model generally places futures above spot. Larger expected dividends can reduce that spread. More time to expiry gives carry more time to accumulate. Actual traded prices also reflect supply and demand, liquidity, transaction costs, margin requirements and other market conditions, so the formula is an explanatory benchmark, not a guaranteed quote.
NSE Academy’s educational illustration
NSE Academy gives a hypothetical example using spot at 6,000, annual financing of 10%, an annualized Nifty dividend yield of 2% and 60 days to expiry:
Fair value = 6000 × e^(0.10 − 0.02) × (60/365) = Rs. 6,079.43

That Rs. 6,079.43 figure is an educational calculation from the example’s assumptions, not a current Nifty market value or a forecast. Changing the rate, dividend estimate or days remaining changes the result.
Turn the formula into a practical worksheet
A simple worksheet prevents most interpretation errors. Put the exact expiry in the first column, followed by the observation date and time, spot level, futures quote, quote type and days to expiry. Then calculate both the point basis and the percentage basis. Keep the inputs visible instead of recording only a conclusion such as “premium” or “discount.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Using the educational figures above, the illustrative difference between the calculated fair value of Rs. 6,079.43 and a spot level of 6,000 is Rs. 79.43. As a percentage of spot, that is approximately 1.32%. This is only an arithmetic illustration of the stated assumptions; it is not evidence that a live contract should trade at that number.
For an actual observation, replace the illustrative fair value with the executable futures quote for the named expiry. If the quote is Rs. 79.43 above spot, the observed basis is positive 79.43 points. If it is Rs. 20 below spot, the basis is negative 20 points. Always state whether you are describing an observed market basis or a difference from a model estimate.
Read the direction and size of the basis in context
| Observed relationship | What it can indicate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Futures above spot | Positive carry may be reflected: financing, expected dividends and time to expiry combine to produce a premium. | It does not by itself prove that futures are overpriced or that a risk-free arbitrage trade exists. |
| Futures below spot | Expected dividends, financing conditions, positioning, liquidity or other market effects may outweigh the usual positive carry. | It does not by itself prove a bearish signal or a guaranteed profit. |
| Basis narrowing as expiry approaches | Carry has less time to accrue and futures move toward the underlying index for final settlement. | It does not mean every intraday quote will move smoothly or continuously. |
| Large change in basis | A change in rates, dividend expectations, market demand, volatility, liquidity or quote timing may be involved. | It cannot be diagnosed from the gap alone without checking the contract and observations. |
NSE Academy summarizes the expiry effect as: “As the date of expiration comes near, the basis reduces – there is a convergence of the futures price towards the spot price.” Convergence is a relationship over the contract’s life; it is not a promise about the next tick.
Interpret intraday moves separately from end-of-day data
An intraday basis is a snapshot of two moving markets. It can widen when the index updates faster than the most recent futures trade, or when one side has a wider bid–ask spread. A sudden change that disappears after both markets trade again may be a quote-timing effect rather than a change in financing or dividend expectations.
End-of-day analysis has a different purpose. Closing prices and official settlements follow defined exchange procedures, so they are more appropriate for comparing historical sessions or calculating mark-to-market changes. Do not combine an intraday futures last trade with a prior session’s spot close and describe the result as that day’s closing basis.
When recording a chart, include a legend that says “live,” “last traded,” “close” or “settlement.” If a data vendor uses its own labels, verify what each field means. Two columns both called “price” can represent different observations.

Daily settlement
NSE’s settlement information states that index-futures daily settlement uses the contract closing price. The closing-price calculation is based on a weighted average during the last half-hour of trading. Therefore, the official daily settlement can differ from a single last-traded price visible on a quote screen.
When a contract has not traded recently
NSE Clearing describes a theoretical daily settlement price for an unexpired contract that did not trade during the last half-hour. Its stated theoretical relationship is F = S × e^(rt). This exchange calculation is a settlement mechanism, not a claim that every market participant would assign the same fair value.
Final settlement
For final settlement, NSE uses the relevant underlying index’s closing price on the contract’s last trading day. That rule is why the final futures settlement reference is tied to the official index close rather than whichever futures quote happened to be last.
When comparing historical data, write down whether each field is live, last traded, close or settlement. A chart that silently combines these categories can create a false basis history.
A repeatable process for reading both prices
- Name the contract. Write the Nifty 50 futures expiry month and verify that it is currently listed.
- Capture synchronized observations. Record the date, clock time, market session and data source for the spot and futures values.
- Classify each value. Mark each as live, last traded, close or official settlement.
- Compute the point basis. Subtract spot from futures and retain the sign.
- Normalize if useful. Divide the point basis by spot to express the gap as a percentage, without discarding the point figure.
- Check time to expiry. More remaining days can support a larger carry difference than a contract near expiry.
- Check carry inputs. Consider financing conditions and expected dividends for that period.
- Check market quality. Look for stale trades, wide bid–ask spreads, unusual volume or a timestamp mismatch.
- Compare only comparable contracts. If you inspect near, mid and far months, calculate and label a separate basis for each.
- State the limitation. Treat the result as information about pricing and carry, not as a self-sufficient trading instruction.
How to compare near-, mid- and far-month contracts
Reading the three maturities together can show how the market prices carry through time, but each contract must be evaluated separately. Build a small table with one row per expiry and columns for timestamp, quote type, futures price, spot level, point basis, percentage basis and days to expiry.
A far-month premium that is larger in points than a near-month premium may simply reflect more time for financing and dividends to affect value. A smaller or negative far-month basis may reflect different carry assumptions, demand, liquidity or data quality. Without synchronized quotes and verified expiry dates, the curve can be misleading.
Do not use the near-month contract as a proxy for every maturity. If the near contract is close to expiry, its basis may be small while the far contract still contains several months of carry. Conversely, a contract with sparse trading can show a less reliable last-traded price even when its theoretical carry appears reasonable.
Why a futures/spot gap is not automatically arbitrage
Arbitrage analysis requires more than observing that futures are above or below spot. A practical comparison would need executable bid and ask prices, contract specifications, margin and funding costs, transaction charges, taxes, dividends, position limits, liquidity and the ability to hold offsetting positions through settlement. The theoretical value also depends on assumptions about financing and dividends.
A screen showing futures above a simplified fair-value estimate does not establish a risk-free profit. The quoted price may be stale, the spread may be narrower at executable prices, or the costs of establishing and closing both legs may consume the apparent difference. The same caution applies when futures trade below spot.

Even a gap that looks large in index points may be modest after expressing it as a percentage of spot. Conversely, a small point gap can matter if transaction costs, financing or execution conditions are unusually low. The calculation is a starting observation, not a complete trade specification.

Using “Nifty futures” without an expiry
Problem: Different maturities are treated as one series.
Fix: Put the expiry month in every note, chart label and calculation.
Comparing asynchronous data
Problem: Spot is live while futures is an old last trade, or one value is a close and the other is intraday.
Fix: Refresh both values or use matching historical timestamps and observation types.
Calling every difference “premium”
Problem: The word premium can hide whether the difference is a point basis, a percentage or a theoretical mispricing.
Fix: Report “futures minus spot,” include units and identify the carry assumptions.

Ignoring dividends
Problem: Financing alone is used to estimate fair value.
Fix: Include expected dividend yield over the contract period or explicitly state that the estimate omits it.
Treating settlement as the last trade
Problem: A settlement-based analysis is reproduced with a last-traded field.
Fix: Use the exchange’s settlement definition and its specified closing-price method.
Assuming convergence is instantaneous
Problem: A temporary intraday divergence is treated as a guaranteed correction.
Fix: Remember that convergence describes the expiry relationship, while intraday prices can move irregularly.
Switching contracts without noting the rollover
Problem: A time series appears to jump when the analysis silently moves from the expiring contract to the next month.
Fix: Record the old and new expiry and calculate each basis separately. A change caused by maturity is not the same as a change in the relationship between one contract and spot.
What to record in a useful basis log
- Observation date and time, including time zone.
- Exact futures expiry and whether it is near, mid or far month.
- Spot value and its quote type.
- Futures value and its quote type.
- Point basis using the stated futures-minus-spot convention.
- Percentage basis and days remaining to expiry.
- Whether the values came from live quotes, historical closes or official settlements.
- Any visible liquidity issue, stale timestamp or exchange holiday adjustment.
- The financing and dividend assumptions used for any fair-value estimate.
This record lets you distinguish a genuine change in pricing from a change caused by switching contracts or data fields.

Which official details should be rechecked
NSE’s Nifty 50 F&O page, displayed as updated 23 September 2025, identifies Nifty 50 as the underlying and describes the three-month cycle. NSE’s contract-specification page displayed an update on 11 August 2026 and sets out the expiry convention noted above. Settlement definitions and mechanisms are maintained separately by NSE and NSE Clearing. Check those pages for the currently listed expiry, holiday treatment and settlement rules whenever you prepare a current calculation.
The essential habit is simple: identify the contract, synchronize the observations, calculate futures minus spot, and interpret the result through carry and settlement rules. The gap is useful market information, but it is not a complete trading thesis on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the basis between Nifty futures and spot?
Basis is the futures price minus the Nifty 50 spot index level. A positive number means futures are above spot; a negative number means they are below. State the expiry, timestamp and quote type with every basis figure.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can Nifty futures trade below spot?
Expected dividends, financing conditions, positioning, liquidity and other market effects can outweigh the usual positive carry. A negative basis alone does not prove a bearish signal or a guaranteed profit.
Which Nifty futures contract should I compare with spot?
Choose a specific listed near-, mid- or far-month contract and name its expiry. Each maturity has its own financing period, dividend expectations and liquidity, so do not combine them into one unnamed quote.
Should I use the last traded price or settlement price?
Use the observation that matches your purpose. Intraday analysis may use synchronized live or last-traded prices; historical marking and end-of-day comparisons should identify the official close or settlement. NSE daily settlement follows a defined closing-price method and may differ from the last trade.
Does a positive basis mean futures are overpriced?
No. Financing, expected dividends and time to expiry can produce a positive theoretical carry. Supply, demand, liquidity, margin and transaction costs also affect traded prices, so the gap is not proof of mispricing or arbitrage.

There is less time for financing and dividend carry to accumulate, and final settlement is tied to the underlying index close. NSE Academy describes this as convergence, but intraday prices can still move irregularly before expiry.
How do I avoid a false basis caused by data timing?
Record both values at the same date and time, confirm whether they are live, last traded, close or settlement, and check for stale trades or wide spreads. Recalculate after refreshing both markets if one quote has not updated.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Name the exact Nifty futures expiry, synchronize its observation with the spot index, calculate futures minus spot, and interpret the result through financing, dividends, time to expiry and NSE settlement rules. A basis is useful information about pricing and carry, not a standalone trading signal.
