Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the moving average to define the chart’s trend and RSI to describe momentum within that trend. A stock trading above a rising average while RSI improves can be consistent with continued strength; an RSI below 30 while price remains under a falling average can simply show ongoing weakness. Neither combination is a buy signal by itself.
The practical method is to read the indicators in sequence, match the chart timeframe to your intended holding period, look for agreement between price and momentum, define what would invalidate the idea, and then check fundamentals, liquidity, market conditions and your own risk limits.

What moving averages and RSI actually measure
Moving averages describe direction, not a forecast
A moving average replaces a noisy price series with a smoothed line calculated from closing prices. A simple moving average (SMA) gives equal weight to each close in the selected period. Exponential and weighted averages give relatively more influence to recent prices, so they usually react faster to a new move. Charles Schwab explains these forms and the way traders use them to observe broader direction and possible support or resistance in its technical-indicators guide.

Schwab discusses 20-, 50- and 200-trading-day examples and illustrates adding 25- and 50-day averages. A 20-day line reacts to roughly one trading month, a 50-day line covers about a quarter, and a 200-day line represents roughly a year of sessions. Those descriptions are useful context for different holding periods; they do not make any one length “correct.” A shorter average turns sooner but produces more noise. A longer average is steadier but lags farther behind a reversal.

Read both the location of price and the slope of the line. Price above a rising average shows that recent closes are stronger than the selected history. Price below a falling average shows the opposite. A flat average often accompanies consolidation. Because the calculation summarizes past prices, a moving average can confirm that a move has developed without telling you when it will end or where the next turning point must occur.
RSI measures recent momentum on a 0–100 scale
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator based on recent closing-price changes. It is plotted from 0 to 100. Readings above 70 are commonly labeled overbought and readings below 30 oversold, as described by Schwab in its overview of technical indicators and its discussion of technical-indicator traps.
Those levels identify conditions that deserve attention; they do not promise a reversal. RSI can stay above 70 while a strong uptrend continues, or below 30 while a strong downtrend keeps making lower lows. The direction of RSI, how long it remains extreme, and what price is doing at the same time matter more than a single reading.
A five-step process for reading both indicators
1. Set a timeframe that matches your decision
Start with the holding period you can realistically maintain. A long-term investor might inspect daily or weekly candles and a longer average; a shorter-term participant may use daily or intraday data. Do not compare a 50-day average on one chart with a 50-day average on a different timeframe as though they represent the same history. On every chart, note whether the stock is trending, consolidating or moving erratically before interpreting either indicator.
2. Establish the moving-average trend
Ask three questions:
- Is the chosen average rising, falling or essentially flat?
- Is price currently above or below it?
- During recent pullbacks, did price hold the area or break through it?
A rising average with price above it is a constructive trend context. A falling average with price below it is a weak context. A crossing or a single touch is only an observation: support can fail and a trend can reverse. Schwab presents averages as ways to study direction, support and resistance, not as guarantees, in its fundamental-versus-technical analysis article.

3. Read RSI as momentum, not a verdict
Record whether RSI is rising, falling, recovering from below 30, retreating from above 70, or staying in a middle range. Then ask whether the move agrees with price. Rising RSI alongside higher highs indicates improving momentum. Falling RSI while price advances warns that momentum is weakening, although price can continue higher. An RSI extreme without a change in price structure is not enough to justify a purchase.
4. Look for agreement and define invalidation
Signals are most coherent when price, the average and RSI tell a compatible story. For example, price can pull back toward a rising average, hold that area, and then turn upward while RSI recovers. That sequence is one possible trend-continuation interpretation, not confirmation of a profitable trade.
Recommended Free Tools
Before buying, write down the behavior that would disprove the idea: a decisive close below the average, a failure to regain a broken level, a new lower low, or another condition relevant to your plan. Also set the maximum loss you can accept. A chart interpretation without an invalidation point can turn a short-term hypothesis into an unplanned long-term holding.
5. Check evidence outside the two indicators
Technical charts are only one part of an investment decision. Review the company’s financial condition and valuation, the sector and broad market trend, trading volume and liquidity, upcoming events, and your own time horizon and risk tolerance. Schwab explicitly cautions that technical analysis should not be the sole means of investment research and that charts cannot guarantee future performance; see its comparison of fundamental and technical analysis.
How common price-and-RSI combinations can be interpreted
| Price versus average | Average slope | RSI behavior | Possible interpretation | What to investigate next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Above | Rising | Rising from the middle range or recovering after a pullback | Trend and momentum may be aligned for continuation. | Whether the latest high is supported by volume, whether the average has held on prior pullbacks, and where the idea would be invalidated. |
| Above | Rising | Falling from above 70 | The trend can remain intact while momentum cools; an immediate chase may carry more risk. | Whether price is forming a lower high, holding a support area, or simply pausing. |
| Below | Falling | Below 30 | Persistent weakness is possible; oversold does not equal undervalued. | Evidence of a higher low, a break above resistance, or a sustained recovery in RSI before treating it as a reversal candidate. |
| Below | Falling | Rising toward 50 | Momentum may be improving inside a still-bearish trend. | Whether price can reclaim the average and whether that average stops falling. |
| Near | Flat | Oscillating between roughly 30 and 70 | Price may be range-bound rather than trending. | Range boundaries, false breakouts and the risk that indicator signals alternate without follow-through. |
| Above | Flat or falling | Falling steadily | Price strength is losing momentum and may be vulnerable to a pullback. | Support below current price, the reason for the divergence, and whether the average is about to turn down. |
These are conditional readings, not ranked trade signals. The same RSI value can have a different meaning in a rising trend than in a declining one.

Reading a possible pullback entry without treating it as a recipe
Suppose a stock has been above a rising 20-day SMA, then retreats toward that line. A cautious chart reader could examine whether daily closes continue to hold the average, whether selling pressure is diminishing, and whether RSI turns upward after weakening. If price then breaks above the most recent short-term high, the three observations—trend context, support behavior and renewed momentum—are consistent with a continuation hypothesis.

Schwab gives a related illustration in which RSI moves back above 30 while price breaks above a 20-day SMA. That example is presented as a clearer possible signal, not a validated rule or a promise of returns; it appears in its discussion of indicator traps. You still need to decide what would negate the setup, how much capital is at risk, and whether the company and market justify any purchase.
Questions that prevent common RSI mistakes
Should you buy when RSI is below 30?
Not automatically. Below 30 means selling pressure has been strong relative to recent closes. In a sustained downtrend, RSI can remain depressed while price continues lower. Look for a change in price structure, such as a higher low or a reclaim of a meaningful resistance level, and for RSI to recover, before considering whether the decline is stabilizing. Even then, “oversold” describes momentum, not business value or a guaranteed rebound.
What if price is above its moving average but RSI is falling?
That is a mixed reading. The average still describes an uptrend context, while falling RSI says momentum is weakening. The combination can precede a normal pause, a deeper pullback or a trend failure. Check whether price is making higher lows and respecting support. A break below the average, especially if the average flattens or turns down, would make the bullish interpretation less compelling.
What if RSI is rising but price remains below a falling average?
Momentum may be improving from a deeply weak level without changing the larger trend. Treat the move as an early recovery attempt until price can reclaim resistance and the average stops declining. Buying solely because RSI has risen can expose you to a countertrend bounce that fails.

Does a moving-average crossover confirm a purchase?
No. A crossover records that one smoothed price series has moved relative to another; it can occur after much of the move has already happened and can whipsaw in a range. Use it as context alongside price structure, RSI behavior, volume and your risk plan rather than as a stand-alone trigger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing two candidate charts consistently
If you are deciding which of two securities deserves further research, use the same timeframe, indicator periods and observation window for both. A consistent comparison keeps you from selecting whichever chart happens to display the most flattering setting.
| Comparison question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Trend direction | Whether the selected average is rising, falling or flat. |
| Price location | Whether price is above or below the average and whether recent pullbacks held. |
| Momentum | Whether RSI is strengthening, weakening, recovering from an extreme or remaining extreme. |
| Price confirmation | Higher highs and lows, lower highs and lows, range behavior, breakouts or failed breaks. |
| Invalidation evidence | The specific price or momentum behavior that would undermine the interpretation. |
This process compares chart conditions; it does not establish that either security suits your finances or objectives. A technically stronger chart can still represent an unsuitable investment because of valuation, concentration, liquidity or personal risk constraints.
Adding a moving average and RSI to a chart
Schwab’s Stock Hacker and charting walkthrough demonstrates adding a 50-day SimpleMovingAvg and an RSI study in thinkorswim. The following setup uses that workflow as a platform example, not as a required strategy:

- Save the chart layout, then record your interpretation and invalidation level before making any decision.
Indicator names and controls can change with software updates. The important part is the analytical sequence, not reproducing one platform’s defaults.

Why signals fail and how to reduce avoidable errors
Trend persistence defeats reversal assumptions
An extreme RSI can persist because a strong trend keeps producing closes in the same direction. Calling every reading above 70 a sell or every reading below 30 a buy fights the underlying trend. Require evidence of an actual change in price behavior instead of treating the threshold as a timer.
Lag and whipsaw create late or contradictory readings
A moving average lags by design. In a sideways market, price can cross it repeatedly while RSI swings between weak and strong readings. You can reduce false confidence by identifying the market regime first and by waiting for a close and follow-through rather than reacting to an intraday touch.
Different settings can manufacture a preferred story
Trying many periods until one produces a perfect historical-looking signal is a form of hindsight. Choose the timeframe and periods before evaluating the chart, document them, and change them only when your investing question changes. The 20-, 50- and 200-day examples are reference points, not promises of superior results.

Low liquidity and events can overwhelm indicators
Thin trading, earnings announcements, regulatory news and broad market shocks can produce price gaps that ignore a moving-average level. Check volume and the event calendar, and avoid assuming that a smooth historical line will contain a sudden repricing.
A risk checklist before placing an order
- What is the intended holding period, and does the chart timeframe match it?
- Which average and RSI settings are you using, and why are they appropriate to that timeframe?
- Is the average rising, falling or flat?
- Is price holding above or below it, and what happened on the last pullback?
- Is RSI strengthening, weakening, recovering from an extreme or remaining extreme?
- Do price action and momentum agree, or is the setup conflicted?
- What exact price behavior invalidates the idea?
- How much money and portfolio exposure are you willing to lose if the idea fails?
- Have you checked fundamentals, sector and market conditions, liquidity and upcoming events?
- Are you making a decision for your own circumstances rather than treating an educational chart pattern as personalized advice?
What the indicators can—and cannot—tell you
Moving averages help organize the past into a readable trend context. RSI helps describe the speed and persistence of recent price changes. Combining them can prevent a momentum reading from being interpreted without regard to trend, but it does not create a mechanical edge. The cited Schwab educational material does not establish a predictive-accuracy or profitability statistic for combining these indicators, and conventional 70/30 levels are indicator conventions rather than return evidence.
Use the pair as a disciplined way to ask better questions: Is the trend favorable? Is momentum confirming or diverging? Has a pullback held? What would prove the interpretation wrong? Then combine those answers with company research and a risk plan. A chart can support a hypothesis; it cannot guarantee the outcome of a stock purchase.
