How to Read Japan’s Weekly Video Game Sales Charts and What the Rankings Measure

Japan’s weekly video-game charts are estimated rankings of sales recorded during a defined Japanese reporting period, normally Monday through Sunday. A position such as No. 1 means an entry sold more units than the other entries included in that chart and period; it does not automatically mean the game led worldwide sales, revenue, profit, reviews, or total players.

The most important checks are the chart publisher, reporting week, geography, measurement scope, platform or hardware model, and whether the number is weekly or cumulative. Famitsu’s published software estimate combines packaged software, download cards and console-preinstalled versions, but its note does not establish that ordinary digital-store downloads are included.

What Japan’s weekly charts actually measure

A Japanese weekly sales chart is a time-limited market estimate. It answers a narrow question: how many units of each measured entry were estimated to have sold through the channels covered during the stated week in Japan, and how did those entries rank against one another?

Media Create describes a weekly unit as Monday through Sunday and publishes Top 300 software retail sales data alongside hardware retail sales, market shares and trend information. Famitsu’s weekly reports also identify a Monday–Sunday period and label their numbers as estimates based on information available when the report was compiled. Always read the date range printed on the report rather than assuming that a chart released on a particular day covers the preceding seven calendar days.

The geography is Japan, not a worldwide market. The measured item may be a software title, a platform-specific SKU or a hardware model. The result is an ordering within that defined scope, not an audited count of every transaction in the country.

What a rank tells you

Rank is ordinal. No. 1 is ahead of No. 2 in the chart’s measured units for that period, but the rank alone does not tell you the size of the gap. A game can move from No. 8 to No. 3 because its own sales increased, because other games sold fewer copies, or because a new release changed the ordering. A rank also says nothing by itself about price, revenue, profitability, review quality, player count or a game’s worldwide performance.

Media Create says its data can be organized by platform, title, genre, release day, retail price, weekly sales number and total sales number. Those filters are useful because they reveal what is being ordered. A title-level view and a platform-SKU view can produce different-looking results even when they refer to the same game.

How the estimates are collected

Media Create publicly describes its figures as retail sales data. An industry explanation of its process says the company samples several Japanese retail channels, including large chains, general-merchandise stores, electronics retailers, smaller game shops and some online retailers, then produces a weekly estimate from those observations. The appropriate description is therefore “estimated Japanese retail sales,” unless a specific report states a different scope.

Sampling is necessary because no public chart provider receives a real-time, audited transaction record from every shop and storefront. The estimate is intended to represent the covered market, but it should not be rewritten as an exact census. Store coverage, reporting delays, product classification and the publisher’s extrapolation method all affect the result.

Famitsu’s wording matters

Famitsu’s weekly note states: “掲載している数値は、集計時点において入手可能な情報に基づいた推計値です。” Famitsu identifies this as an estimate based on information available at the time of compilation. That qualification applies even when a row is printed with a precise-looking unit count.

Does Famitsu include digital downloads?

Famitsu’s software note says: “本ランキングの推定販売本数は、パッケージソフトおよびダウンロードカード、本体プリインストール版を合算したものです。” In English, the estimate combines packaged software, download cards and versions pre-installed on a console.

The note does not say that ordinary purchases made directly through a digital store are included. Consequently, a Famitsu software figure should not be described as total physical-plus-digital sales unless separate evidence establishes that broader scope. “Retail estimate including packages, download cards and console-preinstalled versions” is the safer description.

Download cards are retail products sold through shops, even though they provide a digital game code. A pre-installed version is counted under Famitsu’s stated definition because it is part of the console package. That is different from a customer buying a download directly from a platform store, for which the cited note provides no inclusion claim.

Why another chart may not match

Different publishers can use different samples, classifications and publication cutoffs. VGChartz’s methodology illustrates the interpretation problem: it says the site stopped producing software estimates after 2018 because digital-market share made retail estimates less representative, while its hardware estimates continued to use retail sampling and extrapolation. The practical lesson is to label each series by method and avoid treating unlike estimates as interchangeable.

A discrepancy between two charts is not automatically an error. Check whether one is retail-only, whether the other includes a different product type, whether the reporting weeks align and whether the rows represent the same platform SKU.

How to read a software row

A typical software row includes a platform or hardware family, title, units for the current week, cumulative units, publisher and release date. The exact columns vary by publisher, but the interpretation follows the same sequence: identify the item, identify the period, identify the unit measure and then compare it with like entries.

Platform and SKU

The same game can appear in separate rows for Switch 2, Switch and PS5, for example. Those are platform-specific SKUs, not automatically one combined title total. Compare the rows separately when asking which version sold more. Add them only when you explicitly state that you have calculated a cross-platform total and have confirmed that every relevant SKU is present in the same scope.

A title that appears on two systems may have different release dates, prices, editions, stock levels and audiences. Combining the rows can conceal those differences. Keeping them separate is usually the most faithful reading of the published chart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weekly units

Weekly sales are the units attributed to the stated reporting window. They are a flow: sales during one Monday–Sunday period. The number is useful for measuring current momentum, launch performance and week-to-week movement, but it is not a title’s entire sales history.

Cumulative or lifetime units

Cumulative, lifetime or total sales are the units reported as accumulated through the latest period. They are a stock: the running total represented by that chart. A game can fall in weekly rank while its cumulative total continues to rise, because it sold additional units but fewer than newer or faster-selling entries that week.

Publisher and release date

The publisher field helps distinguish similarly named products and editions. The release date provides context for the current week: a first-week result, a later sales spike and a long-running catalog title are different situations even if their weekly unit counts are similar.

How to read hardware rows

Hardware charts should be read at the model level. Famitsu lists separate estimates for standard, Lite, OLED, Pro, digital-edition and other variants, together with cumulative totals. A “platform” label may therefore cover several rows rather than one indivisible number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not collapse model variants into a single family total unless the source provides that aggregation or you show your own calculation. A standard model and an OLED model can have different prices, availability and launch timing. A digital-edition console is also not the same SKU as a disc-equipped model.

The hardware number is still an estimated retail figure, not a direct measure of installed base, active users or console shipments worldwide. Cumulative hardware units on a Japanese chart describe the accumulation represented by that chart’s reporting method and geography.

A reliable step-by-step method for reading any weekly chart

  1. Identify the publisher. Note whether the table comes from Media Create, Famitsu or another provider. Do not merge figures from different providers before checking their methods.
  2. Record the reporting window. Write down the exact start and end dates. In the cited Media Create and Famitsu descriptions, the weekly unit runs Monday through Sunday.
  3. Confirm the geography. These charts measure Japan. Do not present a Japanese rank as a global rank.
  4. Read the scope note. Determine whether the table covers estimated retail software, hardware units or another measure. For Famitsu software, record the stated inclusion of packaged software, download cards and console-preinstalled versions.
  5. Check digital assumptions. Look for an explicit statement about direct digital-store sales. If none is supplied, do not assume they are included.
  6. Identify the row type. Is it a software SKU, a title-level aggregate or a hardware model? Keep platform versions and hardware variants separate unless aggregation is documented.
  7. Separate weekly from cumulative. Use weekly units for current-period performance and cumulative units for the running total through the latest report.
  8. Read the release date and context. A new launch, a price change, a shipment event or a long-tail catalog sale can change interpretation even when the table itself only shows units and rank.
  9. Compare like with like. Match the same week, country, measurement scope, platform treatment and unit type before drawing a conclusion.
  10. State the limitation in your conclusion. Say “estimated Japanese retail sales” or the source’s precise wording rather than implying an audited all-channel total.

How to compare two games fairly

Comparison check What to match Why it matters
Reporting period The same Monday–Sunday week, or clearly identified different weeks A launch week and a quiet catalog week are not equivalent observations.
Geography Japan for both entries A Japanese chart cannot be compared directly with a worldwide figure.
Measurement scope Estimated retail software with estimated retail software, or hardware with hardware Retail estimates and all-channel totals measure different markets.
Platform treatment Separate SKU versus an explicitly aggregated title Combining versions can change the apparent winner.
Unit type Weekly units versus weekly units; cumulative versus cumulative A running total answers a different question from one week’s sales.
Release position First week, later week or long-tail period Launch demand and catalog persistence have different meanings.
Change measure Rank movement and absolute unit change A rank shift does not reveal the size or direction of the unit difference by itself.

If the source does not establish a comparable value for one of these fields, mark it as “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an assumption. A careful comparison can conclude that the available numbers are not directly comparable.

Why rank and sales can move in different directions

A lower rank can still mean more units

Suppose a title sells more units this week than last week but several new releases sell even more. Its absolute sales rise while its rank falls. Rank is relative to the other rows in that period, so it should be read alongside weekly units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A high rank can hide a small gap

Two adjacent entries may be separated by a narrow difference or a large one. The rank number alone does not provide that gap. Use the reported weekly units when the question is magnitude.

  • Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access

A cumulative leader may not be the weekly leader

An older game can have the largest cumulative total because it has sold steadily for months, while a new release takes No. 1 for the current week. Weekly leadership measures current flow; cumulative leadership reflects the entire reported history up to the latest period.

Long-tail sales are meaningful

A game that remains on the chart after launch may be selling consistently to new buyers, benefiting from word of mouth, discounts, bundles or continuing hardware adoption. The chart does not identify the cause on its own, so describe the observed pattern without assigning an unsupported explanation.

Worked interpretations

Two platform rows for one game

If a chart lists the same title once under Switch 2 and once under Switch, first compare each row’s weekly units and cumulative units independently. You may report which platform SKU ranked higher. To claim a franchise or title total, add the rows only after checking that the chart’s scope and period are identical and explaining that the total is your calculation, not a separately published row.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new release below an older game

If a newly released title is No. 3 while an older title is No. 1, the chart shows that the older title had the highest estimated units in that reporting window. It does not prove that the older title has the larger lifetime total, better reviews or a larger global audience. Check the cumulative column and the release dates before drawing a broader conclusion.

A weekly fall with a cumulative rise

If a title’s weekly units decline from one report to the next but its cumulative number increases, both statements are true: it sold additional units during the newer week, but fewer than during the earlier week. The cumulative figure is not expected to fall unless the publisher revises historical data, which should be identified explicitly if it occurs.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling No. 1 “Japan’s best-selling game” without qualification. Say “No. 1 in the cited Japanese weekly chart” and name the week and scope.
  • Calling a retail estimate an all-channel total. Use the source’s retail and estimate language. Famitsu’s cited note does not establish inclusion of ordinary direct digital-store downloads.
  • Adding platform rows silently. Keep Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and other versions separate unless an aggregate is explicitly supplied or your calculation is clearly labeled.
  • Mixing weekly and cumulative numbers. A current-week ranking and a lifetime ranking answer different questions.
  • Combining hardware models by habit. Standard, Lite, OLED, Pro and digital-edition rows can be separate measurements.
  • Comparing different weeks as if they were simultaneous. Align the reporting windows first.
  • Treating estimates as audited transactions. Sampling and compilation timing mean the figures are estimates based on available information.
  • Assuming a rank change proves demand changed by the same amount. Rank is relative; inspect absolute weekly units.
  • Using one provider’s method to interpret another provider’s number. Read each publisher’s scope note and methodology separately.

What the charts can and cannot tell you

They can show

  • Which measured software rows or hardware models ranked highest in a stated Japanese week.
  • How many estimated units were attributed to that period and what cumulative total the chart reports.
  • Whether platform-specific SKUs are listed separately.
  • How a title’s position and reported units changed between comparable weekly reports.
  • Whether a product appears to have launch-week, continuing or long-tail presence in the measured retail market.

They cannot establish by themselves

  • Total worldwide sales or revenue.
  • Profit, sell-through margin or the publisher’s internal forecast.
  • Total Japanese players, active users or subscriptions.
  • All direct digital-store purchases when the source has not said they are included.
  • The reason a game rose or fell, such as advertising, stock, discounts or word of mouth.
  • How many units were sold outside the chart’s sampled and estimated channels.

Choosing the right number for a report or discussion

Use a weekly figure when discussing immediate momentum, launch performance or a week-to-week change. Use a cumulative figure when discussing the reported sales history through the latest period. Use platform-specific rows when comparing versions. Use a hardware-model row when discussing a particular console configuration.

When writing a sentence, include the elements that prevent ambiguity: publisher, reporting dates, Japanese geography, estimate scope, platform or model and whether the number is weekly or cumulative. For example, “In Famitsu’s estimated Japanese software report for September 7–13, 2026, the Switch SKU ranked above the PS5 SKU for the listed week” is precise about the chart context without claiming a worldwide or all-digital result.

A compact checklist before you quote a chart

  • Have you named the chart publisher?
  • Are the start and end dates clear?
  • Have you said that the figure is an estimate?
  • Is the geography Japan?
  • Is the scope retail software, hardware or another stated measure?
  • For Famitsu software, have you avoided claiming ordinary digital-store inclusion?
  • Are platform SKUs or hardware variants kept separate?
  • Are you using weekly and cumulative columns for the right questions?
  • Are comparisons aligned by week, scope and SKU treatment?
  • Have you avoided turning rank into a claim about worldwide sales, revenue, reviews or player count?

The dependable way to read Japan’s weekly charts is to treat them as dated, estimated measurements of a defined Japanese market slice. Once the reporting window, scope, SKU and unit type are identified, the rankings become useful evidence about relative retail performance without being mistaken for a complete account of every game purchase or player.
