How to Read Images of Protoplanetary Disks: Gaps, Rings, and What They Mean

Images of protoplanetary disks show patterns in light, not a direct picture of planets or a simple map of all the material. A dark annulus is a region of reduced emission at the wavelength observed; it is not automatically an empty orbit or proof that a planet is there. To read a disk image well, first identify what was observed and at what resolution, describe the visible structure, then treat its physical cause as an interpretation.

How do you read images of protoplanetary disks?

Start with the image’s observing context. An ALMA image might show millimeter-wavelength dust continuum or emission from a particular molecule in the gas. Those tracers reveal related but different parts of a disk: continuum and molecular-line maps should not be treated as interchangeable views of the same quantity. ALMA’s account of gas observations in the HL Tau disk illustrates why comparing them can be informative.

  • Facility and wavelength: Identify the observatory and observing band or wavelength.
  • Tracer: Check whether the image is dust continuum or a molecular-line map. A line map traces gas emission; a continuum map traces emission from dust at the observed wavelengths.
  • Scale and resolution: Read the scale bar, source distance, angular resolution or beam size, and orientation. Ask how many resolution elements span the feature. A feature narrower than the beam cannot be treated as a resolved measurement of its width.
  • Display: Note that image brightness stretches can affect how strong a contrast appears. Do not rank features by eye across images with different display scales before checking their observing context.

Resolution matters because it sets the scale of detail the image can distinguish. The DSHARP collaboration’s 2018 survey covered 20 nearby disks in continuum at 240 GHz (1.25 mm), with a stated angular resolution of 0.035 arcsec, approximately 5 au full width at half maximum (FWHM) for those observations. That is a survey-specific figure, not a universal resolution for ALMA images. The review of observations of protoplanetary disk structures also discusses the value of high angular resolution, especially for nearby disks.

What do a gap, ring, cavity, or spiral mean in an image?

Describe what is visible before proposing why it formed. A bright ring is an annulus of enhanced emission relative to its surroundings; a gap is an annular reduction in emission; a central cavity is a broad central region of reduced emission; and a spiral or azimuthal asymmetry describes structure around the disk rather than a uniform ring. ALMA’s overview of planet-forming disks shows the range of morphologies found in disk observations.

Make the description specific to the image: state the feature’s location, apparent width, and contrast relative to adjacent emission, while keeping the beam size in view. A dark band in a rendered image is an observed reduction in brightness at that tracer and wavelength. It does not, on its own, establish that the underlying disk is empty there.

Do gaps in a protoplanetary disk mean planets are forming?

No. A gap can be consistent with a planet shaping the disk, but the image alone does not prove that explanation. A continuum image measures emission, not a direct photograph of solid density or total disk mass. Reduced millimeter emission may reflect a local dust-density minimum, a grain-size distribution that contributes less at the observed wavelength, or a combination of effects. Dust optical properties also matter when interpreting what the continuum brightness says about material.

The peer-reviewed study “ALMA images of discs: are all gaps carved by planets?” addresses why planet carving is not the only explanation for observed gaps. Dust evolution and dust-gas interaction can complicate the interpretation. For example, in its report on gas observations of HL Tau, ALMA describes gas gaps at locations corresponding to dust gaps, but notes that the available evidence could not rule out drag between dust and gas as a cause of a gap.

Use language that matches the evidence: a feature may be “consistent with” a planet’s influence or support a “candidate planet interpretation.” A planet mass or orbit inferred from a model is not the same as a directly imaged planet. The HL Tau gas-observation account is a useful reminder that corresponding features across tracers can add evidence without eliminating every alternative.

What do HL Tau, TW Hydrae, and DSHARP show?

HL Tau: striking rings, still an inference

The iconic ALMA image of HL Tau made rings and gaps in a protoplanetary disk vivid to a broad audience. Its structure motivated interpretations involving planets, but visible rings and gaps remain observations to be explained—not, by themselves, direct detections of planets. ALMA’s account of its HL Tau image and TW Hydrae observations provides context for both systems.

TW Hydrae: proximity reveals smaller scales

In the same ALMA account, a gap in the TW Hydrae disk is described at roughly 1 au. This is the observatory’s reported scale for that feature, not a typical gap size across disks. The example shows why distance matters: a nearby disk can reveal finer physical scales at a given angular resolution.

DSHARP: recurring structures across 20 disks

The DSHARP project provides a homogeneous comparison of continuum images across 20 nearby disks. Its overview reports observations at 240 GHz (1.25 mm) and 0.035 arcsec resolution, about 5 au FWHM for the survey. Rings and gaps recur across the sample, but their appearance varies. These survey specifications help readers compare images made in a consistent program; they should not be assumed for unrelated observations. See the ALMA DSHARP campaign overview and the project’s survey overview paper.

How should you compare two disk images?

Before deciding that one disk has a deeper gap or more dramatic rings than another, compare like with like. Different wavelengths, tracers, resolutions, distances, and display stretches can change what is visible and how strong the contrast seems.

For observing context, the ESO/ALMA Early Science Primer, version 1, dated 24 February 2025, discusses observing considerations including dust properties. Interpretation depends on those details as well as on the visual pattern.
