The reliable way to read Grasim Industries’ annual report is to fix the reporting basis first, then move from management’s explanation to segment results, the income statement, cash flow statement, balance sheet, notes and the auditor’s report. Use consolidated statements for a group-level view and standalone statements for the parent company, and keep that choice unchanged when comparing years.
Start with the official Grasim Annual Report 2025–2026. It separates the Management Discussion & Analysis, statutory reports, corporate governance material, Business Responsibility & Sustainability reporting, and downloadable standalone and consolidated financial statements. The company’s investor archive is a second route to the annual report and earlier reports.

1. Choose the report and reporting basis before reading any number
An annual report can contain several valid sets of numbers. The first question is not whether revenue rose or profit fell; it is which entity and which period the number represents.

Stand-alone and consolidated statements answer different questions
| Reporting set | What it represents | Use it when you want to know | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone | The financial position and performance of Grasim Industries Limited as the parent entity | How the parent company itself earned, invested, borrowed and distributed money | Do not treat it as the complete performance of all businesses and subsidiaries |
| Consolidated | The group reporting view, combining the parent and subsidiaries under applicable accounting rules | How the broader Grasim group performed across its businesses | Do not compare a consolidated figure in one year with a standalone figure in another |
Write “standalone” or “consolidated” beside every figure you copy into your notes. This simple label prevents one of the most damaging annual-report errors: interpreting a change caused by a different reporting perimeter as if it were business growth.
Record the period and currency
Financial years in the report are not calendar years. The detailed exchange filing for FY2024–25 identifies the audited annual period as 1 April 2024 through 31 March 2025 and uses INR as its presentation currency. That metadata belongs to FY2024–25; do not attach it to FY2025–26.
Indian financial statements commonly present large amounts in crore. ₹1 crore equals ₹10 million, or ₹10,000,000. Keep the unit shown in the report when transcribing a value, and do not silently convert crore to million or billion.
2. Read the report in an order that answers business questions
A useful reading sequence moves from explanation to evidence. Management’s narrative tells you what changed and why management says it changed; the statements, notes and audit report let you test that explanation.
- Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A): Identify the year’s operating conditions, major risks, strategic actions and management’s explanation of performance.
- Business and segment review: Find out which businesses generated revenue and segment results, and whether the mix changed.
- Consolidated or standalone statements: Select the basis that matches your question and follow it across all periods.
- Profit and attribution: Separate revenue, total profit, profit attributable to owners and exceptional items.
- Cash flow and balance sheet: Test whether accounting earnings became operating cash and see how investment, debt and working capital changed.
- Notes and auditor’s report: Read accounting policies, material line-item explanations, commitments, related-party disclosures, contingencies and audit language before forming a conclusion.
Use the MD&A as management’s account, not as independent proof. Whenever it says margins improved, demand strengthened or a business faced pressure, locate the corresponding line, segment table or note in the financial statements.
3. Map Grasim’s businesses before interpreting the group total
Grasim is diversified. A single consolidated revenue or profit number can conceal very different conditions in individual businesses. The FY2024–25 filed segment table reports the following operating segments:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Segment reported in FY2024–25 filing | Questions to ask while reading |
|---|---|
| Cellulosic Fibres | Did revenue, segment result, volume, pricing or input costs change, and how did that affect the group? |
| Chemicals | Were changes driven by selling prices, demand, capacity, raw materials or other operating factors? |
| Building Material | What part of the group result came from building-material operations, and did the segment’s contribution change? |
| Financial Services | How do the segment’s income, costs, assets and funding characteristics differ from manufacturing businesses? |
| Others | What activities are included, and is the category large enough to affect interpretation of the total? |
The segment table also shows an inter-segment revenue reconciliation. Revenue earned between group businesses is deducted when reconciling total segment revenue to revenue from operations. Consequently, adding the segment revenue lines without checking eliminations can overstate the group’s external revenue.
Separate segment performance from group accounting
Segment results are not automatically the same as consolidated profit. The group statement also reflects central costs, finance costs, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, eliminations, exceptional items and other consolidation adjustments. Use the segment table to explain composition, then return to the consolidated statement for the final group result.

4. Read the income statement from revenue to attributable profit
Read the income statement line by line rather than treating “profit” as a single number.
Revenue from operations
Revenue from operations is the first major indicator of the scale of activity, but it does not tell you whether the business collected cash, earned a margin or created value. Compare it with segment revenue, operating costs, receivables and operating cash flow.
Operating costs and operating profit
Look for the cost categories that explain movement in margins: materials, employee costs, finance costs, depreciation and amortisation, other operating expenses and any separately disclosed exceptional items. A higher revenue number can coexist with lower profit if costs rise faster.
Total profit versus profit attributable to owners
Total profit for the period is not necessarily the amount attributable to the owners of the parent. Non-controlling interests and other attribution mechanics can create a difference. When discussing what belongs to Grasim’s parent shareholders, use the line explicitly labelled profit attributable to owners of the parent.
FY2024–25 figures from the detailed consolidated filing
The National Stock Exchange filing identified as “Integrated Filing — Ind AS, Consolidated FY2024–25” was filed on 16 June 2025. It reports the following audited-period figures in INR:
| Measure | FY2024–25 consolidated amount | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹1,48,478.89 crore | Measure of external operating revenue for the consolidated group; compare only with the same basis and period type. |
| Total profit for the period | ₹7,756.33 crore | Profit for the consolidated period before separating the portion attributable to owners of the parent. |
| Profit attributable to owners of the parent | ₹3,705.68 crore | Use when the question is how much profit is attributable to Grasim’s parent shareholders. |
These figures come from the filed FY2024–25 consolidated results at https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/ixbrl/INTEGRATED_FILING_INDAS_98324_16062025114422_iXBRL_WEB.html. They are not FY2025–26 figures.

Scan the income statement and notes for exceptional or unusual items. Separate recurring operating performance from gains, losses, restructuring, impairment or other items that are not expected to repeat. A year with a large one-off gain can show strong total profit while underlying operations are weaker; the reverse can also occur when a one-time charge depresses reported profit.
5. Handle the FY2025–26 headline snapshot carefully
The official FY2025–26 report page presents a consolidated performance snapshot attributed to Grasim Industries Limited:
| FY2025–26 page snapshot | Reported amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹1,75,431 crore | Company-reported summary figure for FY2025–26; verify the statement basis and definition in the complete report before comparing. |
| Net worth | ₹1,03,470 crore | Company-reported summary figure; inspect the balance-sheet and equity notes for the definition and reconciliation. |
| EBITDA | ₹25,872 crore | Company-reported summary metric; confirm the calculation, scope and reconciliation because EBITDA is not a single Ind AS line item. |
| PAT attributable to shareholders | ₹4,966 crore | Company-reported summary figure; check the detailed statement and attribution note before using it in a comparison. |
These figures are useful signposts, not substitutes for the statements. The report page gives the headline values, while the full annual report should establish whether each figure is consolidated, how it is defined, and how it reconciles to audited line items. Do not place these FY2025–26 page figures in the same trend line as the FY2024–25 filing figures without confirming comparable definitions and periods.

The page also uses the heading “Trust is an Intangible Asset for Tangible Gains” and identifies Kumar Mangalam Birla as Chairman. Treat that wording as a framing message, not as a financial measure.
6. Compare years without creating a false trend
Before calculating growth, put every candidate number through the same six checks.
| Comparison axis | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting basis | Are both figures standalone or both consolidated? | A change in entity perimeter can look like growth or decline. |
| Period | Are both full financial years, and are the start and end dates clear? | A full year and a partial period are not comparable. |
| Currency and unit | Are both in INR and the same crore, million or other unit? | Unit mismatches can create errors of ten or one hundred times. |
| Revenue definition | Are you comparing revenue from operations with the same revenue concept? | Headline or segment revenue may include or exclude items differently. |
| Profit definition | Is the measure total profit, profit attributable to owners, EBITDA, or another metric? | Different profit lines answer different questions. |
| Composition | Did segment mix, inter-segment eliminations or exceptional items change? | A stable total can hide a major shift in the businesses producing it. |
A disciplined year-over-year worksheet
- Copy the exact line-item name from each statement.
- Record the financial year and the beginning and ending dates.
- Mark “standalone” or “consolidated” in a separate column.
- Record the unit, currency and whether the number is audited.
- Check the notes for restatements, reclassifications, accounting-policy changes and exceptional items.
- Only then calculate the absolute change and percentage change.
- Explain the change using segment data and notes rather than attributing it to a broad narrative alone.
If any of these fields do not match, label the comparison as non-comparable or rebuild it from a consistent statement set.
7. Test profit against cash flow
Profit is calculated under accrual accounting; cash flow shows when cash actually moved. Read the cash flow statement immediately after the income statement to test earnings quality.
Operating cash flow
Ask whether cash generated from operating activities broadly supports reported profit. A gap is not automatically a problem: working-capital timing, tax payments, provisions, interest, inventory and receivables can move cash between periods. The correct follow-up is to inspect the reconciliation and notes, not to declare that profit is fictional.
Indirect-method reconciliation
The FY2024–25 exchange filing confirms that the cash flow statement is applicable and uses the indirect method. Under this method, the statement starts with an accounting profit measure and adjusts for non-cash items and changes in operating assets and liabilities. Read each major adjustment: depreciation and amortisation, provisions, finance-related items, tax, inventories, trade receivables, trade payables and other working-capital movements.
Investing and financing cash flows
- Investing: Identify capital expenditure, acquisitions, asset disposals and investment purchases or sales. Large investment outflows may reflect expansion rather than weak operations, but the notes should show what was purchased.
- Financing: Track borrowings, repayments, interest, dividends, share transactions and other capital movements. Compare this section with the balance-sheet debt and equity notes.
- Net change in cash: Reconcile the opening and closing cash balances and check whether restricted cash or other classifications affect the apparent movement.
8. Use the balance sheet to understand resilience and capital allocation
The balance sheet is a point-in-time snapshot. Compare at least two year-end dates and connect movements to the cash flow statement and notes.
Assets
Review property, plant and equipment, intangible assets, investments, inventories, trade receivables, cash and other current assets. For a diversified group, ask which assets belong to which segment and whether an increase reflects capacity, acquisition, working capital or reclassification.
Liabilities and borrowings
Separate current from non-current liabilities and examine borrowings, lease liabilities, trade payables, provisions and deferred tax. The notes provide maturities, interest terms, security and repayment information that the face of the balance sheet cannot show.
Rank #4
Equity and net worth
Net worth is a summary concept. Reconcile it to share capital, other equity, retained earnings, reserves, other comprehensive income and non-controlling interests as applicable. The FY2025–26 page’s ₹1,03,470 crore net-worth figure should be checked against these detailed balances before it is used in a trend or ratio.
Working capital
Compare inventories and receivables with revenue, and payables with purchases or operating costs where the notes provide enough detail. A rise in receivables can absorb cash even when revenue grows; a temporary rise in payables can boost operating cash without representing a permanent improvement.
9. Read the notes as part of the statements, not as footnotes to skip
The notes often contain the explanation needed to interpret the headline numbers.
Accounting policies and estimates
Read policies for revenue recognition, depreciation, impairment, leases, financial instruments, inventories, employee benefits and taxes. Identify estimates that can materially affect profit or carrying values. When a policy or estimate changes, check whether prior-period figures were restated or merely reclassified.

Look for capital commitments, guarantees, legal claims, tax disputes and other contingent liabilities. A contingency is not the same as a booked liability, but its size, probability and disclosure can change how you assess risk.
Related-party disclosures
Review the nature and value of transactions with related parties, outstanding balances, guarantees and approvals. The key questions are who the counterparty is, what was exchanged, on what terms and whether amounts remain outstanding.
Segment and consolidation notes
Use the notes to understand segment definitions, inter-segment transactions, eliminations, acquisitions, disposals and changes in the group structure. These details explain why segment totals do not equal consolidated revenue or profit without adjustments.

The FY2024–25 exchange filing states that the annual results were audited and records an unmodified opinion declaration. An unmodified opinion means the auditor did not modify the opinion on the financial statements based on the audit work and evidence described in the report; it is not a prediction of future performance and is not a guarantee that every business risk is absent.

Read the complete auditor’s report for:
- the auditor’s opinion and the financial statements covered;
- the basis for the opinion and responsibilities of management and the auditor;
- key audit matters and why they required significant audit attention;
- material uncertainty or emphasis-of-matter paragraphs, if any;
- reporting on internal financial controls and other legal or regulatory requirements.
The detailed report and the summary filing are different reading tasks. The summary confirms the filing status and opinion declaration; the full auditor’s report supplies scope, context and the matters selected for attention.

11. A practical 60-minute first pass
If you need a fast but defensible overview, use this sequence and save detailed ratio work for a second pass.
- Minutes 0–5: Open the FY2025–26 report page and record the report year, currency, units and whether the document is standalone or consolidated.
- Minutes 5–15: Read the MD&A overview, risks and business review. Write down management’s three main explanations for the year.
- Minutes 15–25: Read the segment table and note which of Cellulosic Fibres, Chemicals, Building Material, Financial Services and Others drove the movement. Check inter-segment eliminations.
- Minutes 25–35: Read revenue, operating costs, profit, tax and attribution in the consolidated or standalone income statement you selected.
- Minutes 35–45: Compare operating cash flow with profit, then scan investing and financing flows for capital expenditure, acquisitions, borrowings and dividends.
- Minutes 45–55: Review borrowings, receivables, inventories, commitments, contingencies, related parties and accounting-policy changes in the notes.
- Minutes 55–60: Read the auditor’s opinion, key audit matters and any emphasis or uncertainty paragraphs, then record unresolved questions for a deeper pass.
12. Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mixing standalone and consolidated numbers
Symptom: A percentage change looks implausibly large or a segment seems to disappear. Fix: Rebuild the comparison using the same statement basis and mark the basis beside every figure.
Calling revenue “profit”
Symptom: A report headline is treated as money available to shareholders. Fix: Distinguish revenue from operations, EBITDA, total profit and profit attributable to owners.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Adding segment revenue without eliminations
Symptom: Segment totals exceed consolidated revenue. Fix: Locate the inter-segment revenue deduction and use the reconciled external-revenue figure.
Assuming profit equals cash
Symptom: A profitable year is described as cash-generative without reading the cash-flow statement. Fix: Follow the indirect-method reconciliation and investigate working-capital movements.
Using a summary metric as an audited line item
Symptom: A page headline such as EBITDA or net worth is compared without checking its definition. Fix: Trace the metric to the full report, statement and notes.
Treating an unmodified opinion as a clean bill of health
Symptom: Audit language is used as a forecast or investment recommendation. Fix: Read the scope, key audit matters and contextual paragraphs, and keep operational and market risks separate from the opinion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute13. Keep a repeatable annual-report worksheet
Create one row for each metric and these columns: exact line-item name, amount, unit, currency, financial year, start date, end date, standalone or consolidated, audited or unaudited status, source page, related note, and your interpretation. Add separate rows for revenue from operations, total profit, profit attributable to owners, operating cash flow, borrowings, net worth, capital expenditure and each material segment.
For every interpretation, write the evidence next to it. For example, “receivables increased” should point to the balance-sheet or note, while “cash conversion weakened” should point to the profit and operating-cash-flow figures and the working-capital reconciliation. This keeps conclusions testable and prevents a management explanation from being mistaken for a measured result.
14. What this reading method can—and cannot—tell you
This method can show which reporting perimeter you are reading, how the group’s businesses contribute to revenue and segment results, whether profit and operating cash move together, how the balance sheet changed, what commitments and contingencies are disclosed, and what the auditor reported.
It does not by itself establish a fair value, a target price or a buy-or-sell decision. Those questions require assumptions about future performance, capital costs, industry conditions and risk that are separate from accurately reading the annual report.
