How to Read Fuse Markings and Datasheets Before Choosing a Substitute

Do not choose a replacement fuse by matching only the amp number. A safe substitute must also suit the circuit’s voltage and current type (AC or DC), interrupt the available fault current, behave correctly during startup and overloads, fit the holder or circuit board, survive the installation’s temperature, and carry the approvals required for the equipment. Start by identifying the exact original fuse, then verify every relevant field in the manufacturer’s current datasheet and the equipment documentation.

The procedure below shows how to decode markings, find the right datasheet, compare two candidates, and recognize when the available information is insufficient to approve a substitute.

Why the same amp rating does not make two fuses interchangeable

The current printed on a fuse is its nominal rated current under defined test conditions. It is not a complete description of how the fuse behaves or where it can be installed. Two 2 A fuses may have different voltage ratings, AC and DC capabilities, interrupting ratings, response speeds, dimensions, temperature limits, and certification bases.

A fuse must carry the equipment’s normal operating current without opening unnecessarily, yet clear a dangerous overload or short circuit before the wiring and components are damaged. Those two jobs depend on more than the number followed by “A.” A candidate can fit physically and still be unsafe if its breaking capacity is too low, its time-current curve permits damaging energy, or its approvals do not cover the equipment.

Manufacturer selection material from Bel Fuse, Littelfuse, and SCHURTER treats rated current, voltage, interrupting capacity, mounting, time-current behavior, thermal conditions, and approvals as separate selection dimensions. Use that multidimensional approach rather than treating a fuse as a color-coded or amp-only component.

Step 1: Record every marking and physical detail on the original

Switch off and isolate the equipment according to its service instructions before inspecting a fuse. Photograph the fuse in place and again after removal, if removal is permitted. Transcribe every visible character exactly, including punctuation, spaces, symbols, and manufacturer or series codes.

Markings that may appear on a fuse

  • Rated current: a value such as 500 mA, 2 A, or 10 A.
  • Rated voltage: an AC or DC value, sometimes shown with an electrical symbol or separate ratings.
  • Response or characteristic code: wording or letters indicating quick-acting, time-delay, slow-blow, or another response class.
  • Manufacturer, series, or type code: the key to finding the exact family and variant.
  • Approval or certification marks: marks tied to a particular standard, listing, or application category.
  • Construction or size information: sometimes printed directly, but often inferred only after measuring.

Do not treat a partial marking as a complete part number. A small letter can distinguish a fast-acting and time-delay version, or an AC-only and dual-rated variant. Color is not a reliable identification method because color conventions vary by product family and manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the body and terminals

Note the fuse’s construction: cartridge, leaded, surface-mount, automotive blade, resettable, or another form. Measure body length and diameter, or the complete footprint for a surface-mount part. Record terminal style, lead length, cap shape, clips, and orientation. A nominal size such as 5 × 20 mm describes a physical envelope, not the electrical behavior inside it.

Also photograph the fuse holder, clips, PCB markings, and nearby labels. Holders can have their own voltage, current, temperature, and interrupting constraints. A fuse that fits the opening may not make adequate contact or may exceed the holder’s ratings.

Step 2: Resolve the exact part number in the current datasheet

Use the transcribed code and physical description to locate the manufacturer’s official datasheet or catalog entry. Confirm that the document applies to the exact series, size, construction, and current variant—not merely to a visually similar family.

  1. Search the manufacturer’s catalog for the complete marking, including any prefix or suffix.
  2. Check the series name, outline drawing, and ordering table against your measurements and photographs.
  3. Verify the document revision or publication date where one is provided. A newer revision may change ratings, approvals, or ordering codes.
  4. Confirm that the listed current, voltage, characteristic, and interrupting values correspond to the exact ordering code.
  5. Download the full datasheet, not only a distributor thumbnail or a table copied into a marketplace listing.

If the marking is damaged or ambiguous, keep multiple possible identities until the equipment manual or manufacturer support resolves it. Do not select the most convenient result from a photo search.

Step 3: Read the electrical ratings as separate tests

Datasheet field What it describes What to verify for a substitute
Rated current The nominal current the fuse is designed to carry under specified conditions before operating. Whether the equipment’s steady load, startup current, ambient temperature, and design requirements are compatible.
Rated voltage The maximum circuit voltage at which the fuse can safely clear a fault under stated conditions. That the rating meets or exceeds the circuit voltage for the correct current type, AC or DC.
Interrupting or breaking capacity The maximum prospective fault current the fuse can interrupt at a specified voltage and test condition. The available fault current at the fuse location and the capacity listed for that voltage and configuration.
Time-current characteristic How long the fuse takes to melt and clear at different multiples of rated current. Whether normal inrush passes while overloads are cleared within the equipment’s protection needs.
Response class A classification such as quick-acting or time-delay that summarizes response behavior. That the class matches the original design and the load’s startup and overload profile.
Power dissipation or voltage drop Heat generated and voltage lost by the fuse under specified current. Whether the holder, PCB, enclosure, and low-voltage circuit can tolerate the result.
Approvals and application category Standards, listings, or use categories tested for the specific variant. That the equipment’s required certification and end-use category are covered.

Rated current: compare real operating conditions, not just the label

Begin with the equipment’s specified design current and the actual load profile. A fuse must carry the expected steady current without nuisance operation, but increasing the amp rating simply to stop nuisance opening can remove protection from the wiring or components.

Account for startup surges, motor inrush, transformer magnetizing current, lamp or heater cold resistance, capacitor charging, and any repeated transient. The correct response class may allow a short surge while still clearing a sustained overload. Read the manufacturer’s selection guidance for the specific series; do not turn a generic percentage rule into a universal sizing formula.

Ambient temperature changes the result. A fuse rated at a given current in a laboratory test may carry less current in a hot enclosure or near heat-producing components. Check the datasheet’s derating curves or correction factors and apply them to the actual installation. If the equipment maker specifies a fuse and operating temperature range, that specification takes priority over a general rule.

Rated voltage and AC/DC capability

Rated current and rated voltage constrain different failure modes. The current rating concerns normal carrying and operating behavior; the voltage rating concerns the fuse’s ability to extinguish the arc and remain safe while opening a circuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify whether the circuit is AC, DC, or capable of either. Do not assume an AC rating authorizes DC use. DC arcs do not pass through zero as an AC waveform does, so a fuse may have a lower DC rating, a separate DC rating, or no DC approval at all. Conversely, a part marked for DC may not have the required AC certification for the equipment.

Compare the maximum operating voltage—not merely the nominal label on the power supply—with the fuse’s rating for the relevant current type. Check whether the rating applies to a particular series, orientation, holder, or test arrangement.

Interrupting or breaking capacity: the rating that limits fault energy

When a fuse opens during a short circuit, it must interrupt the prospective fault current without rupturing, sustaining an arc, or ejecting dangerous material. Interrupting capacity is therefore separate from the normal current rating.

Determine the maximum prospective fault current at the fuse location. In a low-voltage DC system this may be limited by a battery or power supply; in mains equipment it depends on the source, wiring impedance, and installation. Use the equipment documentation or a qualified electrical professional when that value is unknown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then check the fuse’s interrupting or breaking capacity at the actual voltage and AC/DC condition. A capacity quoted for one voltage cannot automatically be carried over to another. If the candidate’s rating is below the available fault current, it is not an acceptable substitute even when its amp number, dimensions, and response class look correct.

Littelfuse guidance describes breaking capacity as covering the maximum possible fault current. SCHURTER likewise relates required breaking capacity to the maximum short-circuit current that can occur. These values must be checked for the complete device and installation, because a holder or PCB may impose additional limits.

Time-current curves and response classes

Find the time-current curve for the exact series and current rating. Read the horizontal axis as current, often expressed as amperes or a multiple of rated current, and the vertical axis as operating time. Check whether the curve shows a band rather than a single line; manufacturing tolerance means actual operation can vary within that band.

Quick-acting versus time-delay behavior

A quick-acting fuse is intended to respond rapidly to overcurrent. A time-delay or slow-blow fuse permits a defined transient before opening. Neither label is universally better. The correct choice depends on the load and the protection objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the curve with the equipment’s startup event. If the original fuse survives a documented inrush, a faster candidate with the same amp rating may open every time the device starts. If a circuit needs rapid semiconductor protection, a slower candidate may allow damaging energy through before clearing.

Pre-arcing and total clearing time

Some datasheets distinguish pre-arcing or melting time from total clearing time. Pre-arcing ends when the element melts; total clearing time includes the arc-extinguishing interval. Use the correct portion of the curve when assessing coordination with downstream components, upstream protection, or a manufacturer-specified maximum let-through time.

Do not compare curves from different series as though their axes and test conditions were identical. Use the exact current rating and published test conditions for each candidate.

Physical, thermal, and installation compatibility

Electrical ratings do not guarantee mechanical compatibility. Confirm all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Body dimensions, terminal spacing, lead length, and orientation match the holder or PCB footprint.
  • The holder’s rated voltage, current, interrupting capacity, and temperature range support the candidate.
  • Contact pressure and clip geometry are correct; a loose or oversized cartridge can overheat.
  • Power dissipation and voltage drop are acceptable for the circuit, especially in low-voltage electronics where a small drop can affect operation.
  • Clearance, creepage, ventilation, and enclosure requirements remain satisfied.
  • The fuse can be replaced or serviced without defeating the equipment’s insulation or safety barriers.

Temperature derating applies to the installed assembly, not only the fuse body. Check the manufacturer’s specified test setup, holder, PCB pattern, airflow, and ambient temperature. A component rating measured in one mounting arrangement may not transfer unchanged to another.

Approvals, standards, and application categories

Inspect every approval mark and identify what it actually covers. A logo or general statement that a manufacturer’s products are certified does not prove that every current rating, voltage variant, construction, or end use has the same listing.

Match the candidate’s exact ordering code to the standard or equipment category required in your jurisdiction and by the equipment maker. Industrial control gear, household appliances, medical equipment, photovoltaic systems, and automotive circuits can have different approval bases. If the original documentation specifies a listed fuse class, retain that class unless the equipment manufacturer explicitly permits another.

How to compare two possible substitutes

Place the original and each candidate side by side in a worksheet. Record “not stated” when a datasheet does not provide a value; do not infer equivalence from silence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis Questions to answer Evidence to record
Exact type and construction Is it the same fuse technology, shape, size, and terminal arrangement? Ordering code, outline drawing, dimensions, mounting method.
Current and thermal conditions Will it carry the real steady load at the installed temperature? Rated current, derating curve, power dissipation, test conditions.
Voltage and current type Does the AC or DC rating meet the circuit’s maximum voltage? Separate AC and DC values and any restrictions.
Fault interruption Can it interrupt the maximum prospective fault current? Breaking capacity at the actual voltage and condition.
Response behavior Does its curve tolerate normal inrush and clear overloads quickly enough? Time-current curve, response class, pre-arcing and total clearing data.
Approvals Does the exact variant carry the required listing or application category? Approval marks, standard, file or certificate reference where provided.
Equipment compatibility Does the device maker authorize it, and does the holder support it? Service manual, parts list, approved-substitute rule, holder datasheet.

A candidate should pass every applicable axis. Matching the first few rows does not establish compatibility if the equipment maker rejects the series or if a later value is unknown.

Worked reading exercise: a 5 × 20 mm quick-acting miniature fuse

SCHURTER’s SP 5×20 product page illustrates how a manufacturer presents the fields you need to read. It identifies a 5 × 20 mm quick-acting miniature fuse and provides separate information for rated current, rated voltage, characteristic, breaking capacity, certification marks, and time-current curves.

Use this page as a map of where to look, not as a universal replacement recommendation. First establish that the equipment actually requires a 5 × 20 mm cartridge and a quick-acting characteristic. Then verify the exact current and voltage variant, the applicable breaking capacity, the holder, temperature, and approvals. A different 5 × 20 mm fuse—or even another rating in the same family—may have different electrical limits.

A practical decision procedure before purchase or installation

  1. Secure the equipment. Isolate power and follow the manufacturer’s service procedure. Do not probe a live fault circuit to identify a fuse.
  2. Capture the original. Photograph and transcribe all markings; measure the body, terminals, and mounting arrangement.
  3. Identify the exact family. Use the manufacturer’s catalog and confirm the series, construction, and ordering suffix.
  4. Read current requirements. Compare steady load, startup surge, ambient temperature, and any design current stated by the equipment maker.
  5. Verify voltage and AC/DC. Match the circuit type and maximum operating voltage to the candidate’s corresponding rating.
  6. Calculate or obtain prospective fault current. Confirm that the candidate’s interrupting capacity meets it at the relevant voltage.
  7. Compare curves. Check response class, inrush tolerance, overload clearing time, and any pre-arcing versus total-clearing distinction.
  8. Check installation. Confirm dimensions, holder or PCB requirements, thermal derating, power dissipation, and contact arrangement.
  9. Check approvals. Verify the exact variant’s standards and application category against the equipment documentation.
  10. Obtain final authorization. Use the original specified part or an explicitly approved substitute. If voltage, fault current, or approval requirements are unknown, stop and obtain qualified technical help.

Common substitution mistakes and how to correct them

“It has the same amp number, so it is safe.”

Correction: Compare voltage, AC/DC rating, breaking capacity, response curve, dimensions, thermal conditions, and approvals. Current alone is only one field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The fuse fits the holder.”

Correction: Confirm the holder’s ratings and the fuse’s contact geometry. Physical fit does not prove electrical or certification compatibility.

When you should not approve a substitute

Do not install a substitute when the original part number cannot be resolved, the circuit voltage or AC/DC condition is uncertain, the available fault current is unknown, the candidate’s interrupting capacity is lower or unstated, the time-current behavior is materially different, the holder or mounting is unclear, or the equipment maker requires a listed part that you cannot verify.

Stop as well when the fuse repeatedly opens. Replacing it without diagnosing the overload can conceal a failing component, damaged wiring, insulation fault, or unsafe operating condition. Equipment connected to mains, high-energy batteries, or high prospective fault current deserves assessment by a qualified person when the documentation does not settle the choice.
