A recovery is a separate provider-defined statistic, so its meaning depends on the data source. To compare players fairly, check the provider’s counting rules, playing time, role and whether figures are totals or adjusted rates—not just who has the largest number.
What a tackle, interception and recovery mean
Tackle
In association football, the IFAB glossary defines a tackle as “a challenge for the ball with the foot (on the ground or in the air).” That describes the football action; it does not dictate how every statistics provider records it. IFAB’s Laws glossary is useful for the general meaning.

Providers may use narrower event rules. For example, StatsBomb’s player-stat glossary maps tackles to events whose event name is “duel” and type is “tackle.” Opta’s surfaced definitions describe a tackle as a legal ground-level challenge in which a player connects with the ball and takes it away from an opponent in controlled possession. These are provider-specific methods, not universal definitions. StatsBomb’s stats portal

IFAB defines “intercept” as preventing a ball from reaching its intended destination. In statistics, an interception generally concerns a player reading an opponent’s pass and moving into its path. Opta distinguishes this from a tackle: a pass cut out is not a challenge on an opponent who has the ball. Check the provider’s own glossary to learn how its event feed applies that distinction. Recovery
Do not assume a recovery is simply a tackle plus an interception, or that every provider counts loose-ball regains the same way. The meaning is provider-dependent, and there is no single provider-neutral definition established here. If a stats page does not link to a glossary explaining “recoveries,” treat the figure as an undefined provider label rather than assigning it a precise event boundary.
How to interpret the number on a stats page
Identify the provider and competition
Start with the source of the statistic and the competition or time span it covers. One provider may classify an event differently from another, and a competition page may show a different subset of actions from a player profile. A general football-law glossary helps explain the action but cannot substitute for the provider’s event rules.

Tell totals, averages and rankings apart
A total is a cumulative count. An average (mean) is a sum divided by the number of values. A ranking places a player or team relative to others on a metric; it is not itself a measure of how often an event happened. FIFA Training Centre’s definitions page, dated 29 July 2024, explains these distinctions. FIFA Training Centre: Data analysis definitions
Check minutes and role before comparing totals
A player who appears more often has more opportunity to accumulate events. Playing position, tactical assignment and team possession also affect which defensive actions are available. A defender in a team that spends more time without the ball may face more chances to tackle or intercept than a player in a possession-dominant side.
Rank #3
Per-90 figures express a count relative to playing time, usually as if the player had played 90 minutes; they are not raw totals. Possession-adjusted statistics try to account for differences in how much defending a team has to do. StatsBomb’s 2021 radar explanation gives possession-adjusted tackles and interceptions as an example of this approach, not a universal standard. Any comparison should name what the denominator or adjustment controls for. StatsBomb: Introducing StatsBomb Radars

Before using a defensive statistic to compare two players, check:
Rank #4
- Provider and event definition: What does this source count as a tackle, interception or recovery?
- Competition and time span: Are both figures from the same competition and period?
- Minutes played: Are you comparing equal opportunities, raw totals or a per-90 rate?
- Role and team context: Do the players have similar defensive jobs and possession conditions?
- Type of measure: Is the number a total, mean, ranking or adjusted rate?
- Event outcome: Does the stat record an attempt, a successful action, or a subsequent regain?
A tackle count does not necessarily mean the player’s team won possession. Opta’s definitions distinguish whether the challenging player’s side or the opponent’s side regains possession after the challenge. Likewise, a high number of tackles or interceptions reflects selected recorded events, not every way a player prevents danger or supports the team’s defensive shape.
