How to Read Community Air Monitor Measurements—and Understand Their Limits

Community air monitors can show how pollution changes from one nearby location or moment to another, but their numbers are not automatically equivalent to regulatory-monitor data or a measure of your personal exposure. To interpret a reading, check what pollutant it measures, its unit and averaging period, where and when it was recorded, and whether it has been quality-checked or corrected. For official air-quality and health information, consult AirNow.

What a community monitor reading can tell you

A community monitor can help reveal local and short-term patterns: for example, whether readings at one location rise while conditions elsewhere remain steadier. This context can be especially useful where regulatory monitors are sparse or conditions change quickly. It describes what the instrument detected at its location, however—not necessarily the air someone breathed across a wider area or over a longer period.

Most low-cost sensors do not meet the data-quality standards of monitors that report to AirNow. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “EPA recommends that you use AirNow for information on air quality and health.” A sensor is best treated as supplemental information unless its performance has been evaluated for the specific purpose for which you want to use it. EPA’s explanation of the AQI and sensors describes the distinction.

Read the measurement before interpreting the number

A displayed value has meaning only in context. Before comparing it with another monitor, a past reading, or an official report, identify these details:

Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor, Detects temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, PM2.5 and VOCs, Get notifications when air quality drops, Works with Alexa
  • Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
  • Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
  • Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
  • Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
  • Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
  • Pollutant: Check which pollutant the device detects. A monitor that measures particulate matter, for example, does not thereby measure every air pollutant.
  • Unit: Read the unit shown alongside the value. Values in different units are not directly comparable without a valid conversion.
  • Averaging interval: A short-interval reading is a snapshot; a longer average summarizes a different period. Do not compare them as if they represented the same exposure window.
  • Timestamp and location: Note when and where the value was recorded. Nearby sources, monitor height, and placement can produce differences between locations.
  • Processing: Find out whether the display shows raw readings, applies a correction, or uses another data-processing method. Out-of-the-box sensor data may need quality checks and correction before comparison with regulatory-monitor data. EPA’s overview of air sensor data explains these considerations.

A color or label on a device or website is not automatically an official Air Quality Index (AQI) category. Treat it as an AQI only if the underlying data and calculation method support that comparison.

Why a sensor can disagree with AirNow

The two readings may differ because the systems can use different instruments, locations, averaging periods, correction methods, and purposes. A community device reports conditions at its own placement; an AirNow value is tied to regulatory monitoring and the information system’s reporting methods. A difference by itself does not establish which sensor is wrong, nor does it make the readings interchangeable.

Some sensor data shown alongside regulatory data have received additional processing. For example, EPA and the U.S. Forest Service apply quality-control checks and an extended U.S.-wide correction equation to selected PurpleAir readings on the Fire and Smoke Map. That processing does not apply automatically to every PurpleAir reading, every community sensor, or every website displaying sensor data. Check the particular source’s notes to understand what was done. EPA’s data guidance discusses checks and processing.

Accuracy, precision, and factors that affect readings

Accuracy means closeness to the actual amount in the air; precision means how consistently repeated readings agree with one another. A monitor can produce tightly grouped readings that are consistently too high or too low, so repeatability alone does not demonstrate accuracy.

Performance can vary with the pollutant and sensor design, temperature, relative humidity, placement, time in use, processing, and the presence of other contaminants. Some devices also need protection from weather. A device’s price alone does not establish how well it performs. EPA’s air sensor FAQ and guidance on low-cost monitors and indoor air quality describe these limitations. For most low-cost indoor monitors, widely accepted performance criteria are not established.

How to check a surprising spike

A sudden jump is a reason to investigate the measurement, not enough evidence on its own to identify a pollution source or a health risk. Work through the checks below before drawing a conclusion:

  • CLEAR DISPLAY SETTINGS: Life Basis Air Quality Monitor has a LCD screen display, each data is clear with color reminder , easy to understand. The screen brightness can be adjusted according to your needs, allowing you to understand the indoor air quality at a glance
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: Equipped with a 2500mAh battery and Type-C Charging Port, easy to use and portable. Our air quality monitor provides up to 11-12 hours of continuous use on a full charge.
  1. Check whether the change persists. Compare later readings using the same pollutant and averaging interval; a brief peak and a sustained change are different patterns.
  2. Compare context. Look for readings from nearby monitors or a relevant reference monitor, keeping differences in location and averaging period in mind.
  3. Check conditions and placement. Consider temperature, humidity, weather exposure, and whether the monitor is near a local source or has been moved.
  4. Review operation and data quality. Look for gaps, recent startup or interruptions, time in use, device notes, and any quality checks or corrections applied to the displayed value.

Low-cost sensors can produce questionable individual points or a systematic high or low bias. Without the underlying data and device details, a spike cannot be reliably attributed to a particular cause.

Evaluating a monitor or planning a community study

Before choosing a device or using its data to answer a community question, compare the measurement and evidence—not just the displayed number or purchase price. EPA’s Enhanced Air Sensor Guidebook, refreshed in 2022, covers planning and interpreting sensor studies.

  • Which pollutants and environmental factors does it measure, and is it intended for indoor or outdoor use?
  • What are its units, reporting interval, data access, and approach to processing or correction?
  • Where will it be placed, at what height, and how will it be protected from weather or nearby sources?
  • What performance evidence is available for the intended application, and under what conditions was it gathered?
  • Is the goal supplemental neighborhood information, or a regulatory or health decision that requires more authoritative data?

For a study, make a quality-assurance plan before deployment. One useful evaluation is collocation: operating a sensor near a reference monitor so both measure under shared conditions. EPA provides a collocation instruction guide and analysis tool, including methods for comparing data with different reporting intervals. Results characterize performance in the tested conditions; they do not guarantee equivalent performance in every place or season.

Where to go for AQI and health information

Use AirNow for official AQI and air-quality health information. A community sensor can add local context, but its reading should not replace official guidance or be treated as a personal-exposure assessment. For help choosing, setting up, or using a sensor in a study, EPA’s Air Sensor Guidebook is a relevant starting point.
