Read a cement company’s results as a connected operating story, not as a verdict based on one headline figure. Start with sales volume and revenue, then examine realization, costs, EBITDA and EBITDA per tonne. Check cement and clinker utilization separately, and look for production timing, inventory, unusual items and changes in the company’s reporting scope before deciding whether a trend is durable.
1. Confirm the period and reporting basis
Before comparing figures, note the fiscal quarter, year-to-date period, reporting currency, and whether the release covers standalone or consolidated results. Also check for acquisitions, mergers or other changes in the group’s reporting perimeter: a larger business can change reported volume and revenue even when underlying operations have not grown at the same rate.

Use like-for-like periods and the same reporting basis wherever possible. A company’s results center may provide the earnings release alongside financial reports and investor presentations; for example, Cementir Holding’s results centre lists quarterly or interim reports and presentations.
2. Start with sales volume, then interpret revenue
Sales volume shows how much was sold
Find cement sales volume and compare it with the same quarter a year earlier. Note whether the company also reports clinker, ready-mix concrete, aggregates or other products. Higher shipments establish that more volume was sold in the stated period; on their own, they do not establish stronger prices, better margins or stronger demand in every market. Consider management’s explanation and whether the comparison includes acquired operations or newly commissioned capacity.

Revenue growth needs a bridge
Compare revenue growth with volume growth. If revenue rises faster or slower than volume, possible factors to investigate include realization, product and geographic mix, non-cement activity, and changes in the reporting perimeter. Do not present revenue divided by volume as a reported price per tonne unless the company provides the necessary detail; if you calculate an implied figure, label it clearly as your calculation and explain its limits.
Read volume, revenue and profitability together. Ambuja Cements’ nine-month FY26 investor material, for the period ended 31 December 2025, reported consolidated cement sales volume of 53.8 million tonnes and revenue from operations of ₹29,740 crore alongside operating EBITDA and per-tonne profitability measures. These are company figures for that period, not industry benchmarks (Ambuja Cements investor material).

3. Read EBITDA with its definition and unit economics
Check whether the company reports EBITDA, operating EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA, an EBITDA margin, or EBITDA per tonne. These labels do not guarantee that companies calculate the measures in the same way. Use the issuer’s definition and any reconciliation, and do not compare one company’s adjusted figure with another’s unadjusted figure as though they were equivalent. Cementos Pacasmayo’s SEC-filed disclosure warns that its EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA may not be comparable with similarly titled measures at other companies (Cementos Pacasmayo SEC filing).

When available, EBITDA per tonne is a clue to unit economics; read it alongside total EBITDA and volume. If total EBITDA falls while EBITDA per tonne rises, lower volume may be one contributor. If EBITDA per tonne falls, investigate reported movements in fuel, power, freight, packaging, raw materials, realization and mix. Do not assign a cause without evidence in the company’s disclosure.
For scale, Ambuja reported FY26 cement volume of 73.7 million tonnes and EBITDA of ₹6,539 crore, or ₹887 per tonne. Those company-reported figures describe that period and issuer only; they are not a standard to apply to other cement businesses (Ambuja Cements FY26 results).
4. Keep cement and clinker utilization distinct
Cement production and clinker production can follow different schedules. Check how the company defines utilization and whether its calculation uses production divided by installed capacity, and whether the reported period is annualized. Pacasmayo defines its utilization rate as production for the specified period divided by installed capacity for that period; that is an issuer-specific definition to verify before applying it to another company (Cementos Pacasmayo SEC filing).

- Used Book in Good Condition
A low clinker utilization rate in one quarter need not mean cement demand weakened or that a kiln is underperforming. Pacasmayo’s 2Q26 disclosure described lower clinker utilization linked to annual kiln production planning and use of existing clinker inventory, while cement utilization was driven by demand. Read utilization alongside shipment volumes, maintenance schedules and inventory movements rather than treating a single rate as a complete measure of demand, efficiency or asset health (Cementos Pacasmayo 2Q26 disclosure).

Read the notes and management bridges for one-time gains, incentives, impairments, acquisitions, disposals, tax effects and changes in consolidation. These can make headline year-over-year growth look unusually strong or weak. Ambuja’s nine-month FY26 material flags one-time income and a GST incentive in prior-period quarterly comparisons and points to a normalized-to-reported PAT bridge. Compare reported with reported, or normalized with normalized, and label any adjustment you make (Ambuja Cements nine-month FY26 material).

6. Treat management explanations as claims to test
Construction demand, weather, fuel and power prices, freight, packaging availability, currency, maintenance and competition can all affect results, but none is a universal explanation. Check which factors the company actually identifies and whether the effects continue, reverse or change in later reports.
In its FY26 release, Ambuja cited fuel, diesel, packaging, rupee depreciation, weather, geopolitical events and inventory management among the factors affecting its performance. It also described mitigation measures involving fuel mix, renewable power, logistics and production or inventory management. These are explanations for that company and period, not a checklist of causes to assume for every cement producer (Ambuja Cements FY26 release).
7. Separate capacity plans from operating results
Distinguish installed capacity, trial production, commercial commissioning, utilization and saleable output. A project milestone or forecast is not proof that capacity is already contributing to commercial production. Dalmia Bharat’s Q2 FY26 release said a new clinker line began trial production in September 2025 and was expected to begin commercial production in Q3 FY26. That statement records the plan at the time; check later filings for confirmation of commissioning, realized production and costs (Dalmia Bharat Q2 FY26 release).

When comparing two or more cement producers, align fiscal periods, currency and consolidation basis, then compare these operating dimensions:
- Volume growth, product mix and geographic mix.
- Revenue or realization trends in relation to volume.
- EBITDA definitions, margins and per-tonne performance.
- Exposure to fuel, power, freight and other costs.
- Cement and clinker utilization, including maintenance and inventory effects.
- Capacity additions, commissioning status and capital needs.
- Exceptional items, leverage, interest costs and cash generation, where disclosed.
A ranking based on one metric can mislead. EBITDA per tonne, for example, may reflect differences in product mix, accounting definitions, geography, or integrated production versus grinding operations. The company disclosures cited above establish why definitions need checking; they do not provide a universal formula for adjusting one producer’s figure to match another’s.
