How to Read Brian K. Vaughan’s Comics in Order

There is no single reading order for Brian K. Vaughan’s major comics. Saga, Y: The Last Man, Paper Girls, Ex Machina, Runaways and Pride of Baghdad are separate works, with no shared chronology that requires you to move from one title to another. Start with the series that matches your interests, then read that series from its first issue or first numbered collection.

If you want a tour of Vaughan’s range, sample one opening volume from several works and continue each title independently. The order below distinguishes a series’ internal publication order from an optional, personal route through his bibliography.

The short answer: read each series from its own beginning

“In order” can mean two different things. Within a series, it means following the numbered issues or collected volumes from the beginning. Across Brian K. Vaughan’s bibliography, it would mean arranging works by publication date. The first is a real requirement; the second is only an optional way to explore his career.

The publisher catalogs for these books treat them as separate properties. Saga is an Image series by Vaughan and Fiona Staples. Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina have their own collected-edition programs. Paper Girls is a complete story available in one large trade paperback. Pride of Baghdad is a standalone graphic novel, while Runaways belongs to a shared superhero universe. Nothing in those catalogs prescribes a crossover sequence.

Use this rule: choose one title, begin at the first issue or first numbered book, and stay in that title’s collection order until you finish or reach the latest available volume. You do not need to read Saga before Paper Girls, or either one before Y: The Last Man.

At-a-glance reading order

Work Start here Continue with What the order means
Saga Issue #1 or the first numbered collected edition Subsequent issues or numbered trades One ongoing series; its collected publication continues
Y: The Last Man Book One Numbered books in sequence, or an omnibus A completed long-form series
Paper Girls The beginning of the story, or The Complete Story Read forward through the complete edition or individual volumes A self-contained completed story
Ex Machina Volume One Later volumes, or the complete-series omnibus Follow its own volume sequence
Pride of Baghdad The standalone graphic novel No sequel order is required Independent one-volume read
Runaways The beginning of Vaughan’s run That run’s publication or collection sequence Shared-universe continuity; separate from the creator-owned Image titles

How to read Saga in order

Start with issue #1 or the first numbered collection

Begin at Saga issue #1. If you prefer collected books, choose the first numbered trade and then proceed through the numbered trades in order. Both approaches preserve the same narrative sequence; the difference is only whether you receive the story one issue at a time or in larger installments.

Understand its publication status

Image describes Saga as an ongoing series created by Vaughan and Fiona Staples. The catalog listed issue #72, dated March 19, 2025, together with later numbered collected editions at the time of the catalog review. That means you should not treat the overall story as a finished series simply because several arcs are available in trades. The latest collected book in your store may not represent a final ending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a format that matches your pace

Single issues let you follow releases as they appear and keep each installment light. Standard trades reduce the number of purchases and are easier to read in story-sized sections. Image also lists larger compendium and deluxe formats. A compendium is efficient for a long catch-up session but heavier to hold; deluxe editions usually prioritize presentation and durable binding over portability. Availability can differ between formats, so check the edition’s numbering before buying.

How to read Y: The Last Man in order

Use Book One as the entry point

DC’s catalog identifies Y: The Last Man Book One as collecting issues #1–10. It is therefore a precise starting point rather than a mid-series sampler. Begin there, then move to the next numbered book and continue upward.

Choose numbered books or a consolidated edition

The catalog also lists the remaining numbered books, deluxe editions and an omnibus. Numbered books make it easy to see where you are and to replace one missing volume without purchasing the whole story. An omnibus consolidates the run for readers who want one purchase and do not mind a larger, heavier book. The order of the story does not change between those formats; only the grouping of issues changes.

Why it works as a first Vaughan series

Y: The Last Man is a completed long-form narrative, so a new reader can begin at Book One with a clear path toward an ending. You do not need background from Saga, Paper Girls or any other Vaughan title. Its characters, setting and plot are self-contained within its own series.

How to read Paper Girls in order

Read from the beginning, or use one complete volume

For a one-book experience, use Paper Girls: The Complete Story. The publisher lists it as a 784-page trade paperback, published November 2, 2021, with ISBN 9781534319998. It is written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson.

What “complete” means here

The complete-story edition is designed to carry the narrative from its opening through its conclusion in one physical volume. If you own the story in separate collected books instead, read those volumes from the first one forward. Do not insert another Vaughan series between volumes: the plot’s order is entirely internal to Paper Girls.

When this is the best starting choice

Choose this edition when you want a finished story without tracking multiple books. Its 784 pages make it less portable than a standard trade, but they also remove the risk of reaching a cliffhanger and discovering that the next volume is unavailable. The listed publication date and page count describe that edition; prices and stock depend on the seller and can change.

How to read Ex Machina in order

Begin with Volume One

Start with the first Ex Machina volume, then continue through the numbered volumes. The sequence is the same whether you buy individual trades or read digitally in volume order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the complete-series omnibus for a single purchase

DC and Penguin Random House list Ex Machina: The Complete Series Omnibus. This option is intended for readers who want the complete collected run together rather than assembling it volume by volume. Confirm that the listing is the complete-series edition, since similarly named individual volumes can appear beside it.

Keep it separate from other Vaughan titles

Ex Machina has its own cast and continuity. There is no reading-order benefit to placing it between particular volumes of Y: The Last Man, Saga or Paper Girls. Any cross-title order is a reading preference, not a story requirement.

Where Pride of Baghdad and Runaways fit

Pride of Baghdad: read it whenever you want a standalone

Pride of Baghdad is a standalone graphic novel. Start at its first page and read through the book; no previous Vaughan series is required, and there is no later volume you must place after it. It is an efficient choice when you want a complete reading experience in one sitting or over a few sessions.

Runaways: follow Vaughan’s own run in collection order

Runaways is a longer series set in a shared superhero universe. Vaughan’s run should be read in its own publication or collected-edition sequence, beginning with that run’s first volume and moving forward through the numbered collections. The exact collection names can vary by printing, so use the volume numbers and contents listed by the publisher rather than assuming that every Runaways book contains Vaughan’s material.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not treat Runaways as part of the continuity of the creator-owned Image works. Its shared-universe setting creates a different kind of reading order: follow the relevant Runaways sequence, but do not add Saga, Paper Girls or Y: The Last Man as supposed prerequisite chapters.

An optional cross-title sampler

Readers who want a career-oriented tour can use an editorial sampler rather than searching for a nonexistent universal chronology. One workable route is:

  1. Start with one major early entry, such as Y: The Last Man or Vaughan’s Runaways run.
  2. Read the first volume of Ex Machina.
  3. Read Pride of Baghdad as a complete standalone.
  4. Begin Saga with issue #1 or its first numbered trade.
  5. Begin Paper Girls with the first volume, or read The Complete Story.

This route is not a canonical universe order and does not claim to reconstruct every issue-level publication date in Vaughan’s bibliography. It simply alternates different kinds of stories and formats so that you can sample the range of his work. After each sample, either continue that title or switch to another without creating a continuity problem.

Choosing between issues, trades, deluxe books and omnibuses

All of these formats can deliver the correct story order. The practical differences are completeness, physical size, portability and how easily you can replace a missing book.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Format Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Single issues Following a series as installments Small reading units; clear issue numbering More individual purchases; gaps can interrupt a run
Standard trades Most first-time readers Convenient story chunks; easier to carry; numbered sequence You may need several volumes for a complete series
Deluxe hardcovers Collectors and long-term storage Larger presentation and durable construction Heavier and usually less convenient for travel; cost varies
Compendiums or omnibuses Readers who want a consolidated run Fewer separate books; can gather a large or complete sequence Large, heavy volumes; verify exactly which issues or volumes are included

Official catalogs establish that these formats exist for several of the major works, but they do not establish a universal current price or stock position. Retail listings can change, and a promotional price or one-time discount should not be treated as the normal cost of a series. Before purchasing, check the contents page, ISBN and edition label.

Where should you start with Brian K. Vaughan?

Choose Paper Girls: The Complete Story for one finished book

This is the most direct option if your priority is a completed narrative in a single volume. The 784-page trade contains the complete story, so you can read without planning a second purchase.

Choose Y: The Last Man Book One for a clear long-series entry

Pick this when you want a substantial completed series but prefer to begin with a standard first book rather than a very large omnibus. Its contents are explicitly defined as issues #1–10.

Choose the Ex Machina omnibus for consolidation

This suits readers who want the complete collected series in one purchase and are comfortable with an oversized volume. If portability matters more, use the numbered volumes instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Saga if you want an ongoing series

Start at issue #1 or the first trade when you are happy to follow a series whose collected publication continues. Do not wait for a final omnibus or assume that the catalog’s latest listed issue is the conclusion.

Choose Pride of Baghdad for the shortest commitment

Because it is standalone, it lets you try Vaughan’s storytelling without committing to a multi-volume sequence.

Choose Runaways if shared-universe superheroes are the attraction

Begin with Vaughan’s run and stay within its collection order. This is the appropriate route for readers who want that Marvel universe context, not a gateway into the continuity of his creator-owned works.

A simple process for planning your reading

  1. Pick your scope. Decide whether you are reading one series to completion or sampling several titles.
  2. Pick the starting format. Use the first issue, first numbered trade or a clearly labeled complete edition.
  3. Check the contents. For collected books, verify the issue range, volume number, ISBN and whether the book is a compendium, deluxe edition or omnibus.
  4. Keep a title-specific checklist. Record the next numbered book for that series rather than mixing numbers from different works.
  5. Handle gaps by format, not by chronology. If one trade is unavailable, use a different edition that covers the same issues; do not jump to another Vaughan title and call it the next chapter.
  6. Reassess only at a natural break. After finishing a volume or standalone, decide whether to continue, switch titles or return later. No cross-title prerequisite is created by that choice.

Common reading-order mistakes

  • Looking for one master chronology: Vaughan’s major works span different publishers and continuities, so a single mandatory list does not exist.
  • Calling Saga complete because many trades are available: Its catalog continues to list numbered issues and collected editions; treat it as ongoing at the catalog date noted above.
  • Starting Y: The Last Man with a later deluxe book: Check the contents first. Book One is the unambiguous beginning because it collects issues #1–10.
  • Confusing “complete story” with a sampler: Paper Girls: The Complete Story is the consolidated edition; an ordinary volume may contain only part of the narrative.
  • Mixing Runaways into Image continuity: Its shared-universe setting requires its own run order, not insertion between creator-owned series.
  • Assuming one binding equals one series: A deluxe book, compendium or omnibus may combine several standard volumes. Use the contents list to establish where it belongs.

Final recommendation

For most new readers, begin with the title whose format and status fit your preference: Paper Girls: The Complete Story for one finished volume, Y: The Last Man Book One for a completed series with a clearly numbered start, the Ex Machina omnibus for a consolidated run, or Saga for an ongoing series. Read Pride of Baghdad independently and keep Runaways within Vaughan’s own collection sequence. Once you start a series at its first issue or first numbered book, its internal order does the rest.
