How to Read Bearing, Frequency and Signal-Strength Data from an Airborne RF Surveillance System

Read the display as three different kinds of evidence: bearing tells you the direction from which energy arrived, frequency identifies the RF energy being measured, and signal strength describes the received level under the instrument’s stated settings. A bearing is normally a line of bearing (LOB), not a distance or position fix. A high level can support a stable bearing, but it does not prove that the aircraft is close to the transmitter.

Reliable interpretation requires the three fields together with occupied bandwidth, modulation, receiver bandwidth, antenna configuration, aircraft heading, time, noise level and propagation conditions. The procedure below shows how to identify the signal, test the quality of each observation and decide when a display is good enough for navigation, interference investigation or localization.

What each field actually means

Display field What it answers What it does not establish Information to record
Bearing The direction of arrival relative to aircraft heading, a selected reference axis or a north-referenced display Range, altitude of the emitter or a unique position from one observation Reference frame, aircraft heading, time, antenna mode, indicated angle and any uncertainty
Frequency Which RF energy is centered in the receiver or measurement channel That the signal is the wanted transmission, or that nearby energy is outside the receiver passband Center frequency, tuning accuracy, occupied bandwidth, modulation and receiver bandwidth
Signal strength How much received level or field strength the detector measured under stated conditions Direct distance, transmitter power or a guaranteed bearing quality Units, detector, analysis bandwidth, integration time, antenna configuration, noise level and calibration status

In direction-finding work, the FAA describes the output as a strobe indication giving a line of bearing from the aircraft to the transmission source. That line may be used operationally to look or fly in a direction, but it becomes a geographic fix only when combined with additional geometry or another suitable measurement.

ITU-R SM.2125 treats field sensitivity as a measurement in dB(µV/m) with the associated analysis bandwidth, modulation and SINAD conditions stated. A number without those conditions is not comparable with a number made using a different detector or bandwidth.

Prepare the observation before interpreting the arrow

Write down the measurement context first. The same transmitter can produce different readings as the aircraft banks, changes heading, passes through a reflection zone or uses another antenna channel.

  • Reference: determine whether the angle is relative bearing, aircraft-referenced azimuth, magnetic or true north-referenced bearing. Do not assume that an arrow pointing ahead means north.
  • Aircraft state: record heading, bank, yaw, position, altitude and time. An antenna shadow or changing attitude can alter both level and angle.
  • RF setup: record tuned frequency, receiver bandwidth, detector mode, analysis bandwidth, integration time and antenna selection.
  • Signal identity: note the emission type, modulation, station identifier or decoded content when available. A displayed peak is not automatically the target transmission.
  • Noise and interference: note the noise floor, signal-to-noise ratio and nearby peaks. A narrow receiver setting can hide part of a signal; a wide setting can admit adjacent energy.
  • Calibration and units: preserve the displayed units and any calibration or correction state. Do not compare dBµV/m, dBm and arbitrary level bars as though they were the same quantity.

A repeatable reading sequence

  1. Identify the signal. Verify the tuned frequency, listen for or decode the emission when possible, and inspect the spectrum around the reported channel. FAA guidance for NDB/ADF work says identification should be monitored because disturbances can produce erroneous bearings.
  2. Measure the neighborhood. Sweep around the channel and note all peaks, their center frequencies and occupied bandwidths. Compare them with the victim receiver’s passband rather than treating the nominal channel label as the complete signal.
  3. Check level against noise. Observe the signal-to-noise relationship and the detector behavior. A clean signal well above the noise generally gives a steadier indication than one barely above the floor, but a reflected or co-channel signal can still create a convincing false direction.
  4. Read the bearing in its reference frame. Convert relative bearing to the required aircraft or geographic frame, then write down the aircraft heading and time beside it. Treat the result as a line extending from the aircraft.
  5. Test stability on a steady heading. Hold the aircraft configuration as constant as practical and watch whether the angle remains clustered or wanders. Record the spread rather than selecting one attractive instantaneous value.
  6. Make a controlled heading change. Reobserve after a known turn. A physically consistent source should produce a related change in relative bearing; erratic movement, loss of signal or a bearing tied to aircraft structure lowers confidence.
  7. Decide whether geometry is sufficient. Follow the LOB when the operational task calls for direction finding, or combine separated, time-stamped bearings for triangulation. Do not report a single line as an emitter location.

How bearing is produced and why it can be ambiguous

Null-based loop direction finding

A manually rotated loop antenna has a response that changes as the loop turns. The UK Central Flying School manual states: “To take a manual loop bearing, the loop is rotated until a minimum signal (or ‘null’) is found.” The null is sharper than the corresponding maximum, so it is normally the more precise point to set.

A simple loop responds similarly when the transmitter is on either side of the loop. That creates a 180-degree ambiguity: the instrument can indicate a line, but not which end of that line contains the source. A sense antenna or equivalent processing resolves the ambiguity. If sense information is unavailable or unreliable, report both possible directions or explicitly mark the bearing as ambiguous.

Electronic arrays and interferometers

Fixed arrays, Doppler systems and interferometers calculate angle of arrival electronically rather than by physically rotating a loop. Their displayed arrow is still a system result, not an infallible truth. Antenna phase and amplitude calibration, aircraft installation, structural scattering and the propagation environment all affect the calculated angle.

ITU direction-finding guidance treats accuracy as a property that must be measured under defined conditions. The relevant question is not simply whether the screen shows degrees, but how that installation was calibrated, over which frequency range, with what antenna pattern, update rate and environmental limits.

Reference-frame checks

Before acting on an arrow, confirm the reference convention. A relative bearing of 30 degrees right on a westbound aircraft corresponds to a different geographic azimuth than the same display value on a northbound aircraft. If the system can show both relative and north-referenced values, compare them during a stable observation to detect a configuration or heading-source error.

How to use frequency and bandwidth to find the real interferer

Frequency identifies the center of the energy being measured; occupied bandwidth shows how far that energy extends. Read both with the modulation and the receiver’s passband.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a useful receiver bandwidth

Use the narrowest bandwidth that passes the wanted modulation and accommodates expected frequency drift. A setting that is too wide admits adjacent signals and raises the noise floor. A setting that is too narrow can clip modulation, distort identification or make an intermittent signal disappear. FAA procedures specifically warn that tuning a DF receiver too narrowly can reduce interference-search effectiveness.

Sweep around the reported channel

  1. Start at the reported or nominal channel frequency.
  2. Sweep above and below it far enough to reveal adjacent peaks and drift.
  3. Measure each candidate peak’s center frequency and occupied bandwidth.
  4. Compare those measurements with the victim receiver’s passband and the modulation that should be present.
  5. Repeat with a bandwidth that captures the complete wanted emission, then with a narrower view to separate close-in signals.

FAA guidance also notes that tuning slightly above or below an affected facility frequency can reveal a peak in received strength that helps locate the interference source. That technique is useful only when the frequency offset, detector behavior and signal identity are recorded; a level peak alone does not prove which emitter caused the problem.

Distinguish a carrier from unwanted content

A strong carrier can mask a weaker wanted signal. Voice, music, data sidebands or impulsive energy may appear near the center frequency and can produce a misleading bearing if the receiver locks onto the wrong component. Listen for the expected identification and inspect the spectrum while changing bandwidth. If the apparent bearing changes when a nearby component is included or excluded, treat the original result as mixed-signal data.

How to interpret signal strength without turning it into a distance estimate

Signal strength is received level or field strength under the instrument’s detector, bandwidth and calibration settings. It is best used as comparative evidence: compare observations made with the same aircraft configuration, antenna, frequency, detector, bandwidth and processing time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why level changes even when distance does not

  • Antenna gain and pattern: the aircraft installation may favor some directions and attenuate others.
  • Aircraft attitude and structure: fuselage shadowing, banking and yaw can change the coupling into an antenna.
  • Propagation: terrain, ground conductivity, ionospheric conditions and atmospheric effects can alter the path.
  • Polarization: a mismatch between the incident wave and antenna polarization reduces the measured level.
  • Multipath and reflections: direct and reflected paths can add or cancel, creating a local maximum away from the transmitter.
  • Transmitter power and duty cycle: different emitters, or one intermittent emitter, do not provide a common reference level.
  • Co-channel energy: a nearby or stronger signal can dominate the detector and the direction-finding solution.

Consequently, “stronger means closer” is not a safe rule. A rising level while following a consistent LOB is useful operational evidence, but it is not a range measurement and should not override a contradictory spectrum or identification check.

Record the measurement conditions

For every level observation, record the value, units, detector, analysis-filter bandwidth, modulation, integration time, antenna configuration, aircraft position and noise floor. ITU measurement guidance identifies integration time, analysis-filter bandwidth, modulation and SINAD as parameters that change sensitivity and results. Without them, two level readings may not be comparable.

Confidence checks and common false bearings

ITU lists signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, interference, propagation, antenna configuration, receiver channels, site or aircraft environment and integration time among the factors affecting bearing accuracy. Use those factors to grade confidence rather than relying on the arrow’s visual smoothness.

Symptoms that lower confidence

  • The bearing wanders widely while the aircraft holds a steady heading.
  • The angle changes sharply with bank, yaw or antenna selection.
  • The signal disappears when the bandwidth is changed slightly.
  • The station identification is noisy, incomplete or inconsistent.
  • The spectrum shows multiple signals inside the receiver passband.
  • The indicated direction is a stable but implausible line that conflicts with independent observations.
  • The level is high but the bearing is unstable, suggesting reflection, co-channel capture or antenna-pattern effects.

Known aviation interference conditions

FAA AIP guidance warns that lightning, precipitation static and nighttime interference can produce erroneous ADF bearings. A noisy station identification commonly accompanies an erratic needle, while a steady false bearing can occur with voice, music or other unwanted modulation. These symptoms require an identity and spectrum check, not simply a larger confidence setting on the display.

A practical verification loop

  1. Reconfirm the station or emission identity.
  2. Inspect adjacent frequencies and occupied bandwidth.
  3. Repeat the bearing on a steady heading.
  4. Change heading in a controlled way and compare the new line.
  5. Check whether the result changes with antenna selection or bandwidth.
  6. Record the aircraft state and conditions if the discrepancy persists.

A bearing that changes with aircraft attitude, vanishes when the measurement bandwidth changes or cannot be reproduced should be reported as low confidence.

When a bearing becomes a location

One bearing supplies one line from the aircraft. To locate an emitter, obtain separated observations whose geometry provides an intersection or use a system-specific location method.

Triangulation from separated observations

Record at least two time-stamped bearings from meaningfully separated aircraft positions, convert them to a common geographic reference and project each line with its uncertainty. The intersection area, rather than the crossing of two infinitely thin lines, is the useful result. Wide bearing spread or nearly parallel lines produce a large uncertain area.

Operational homing

If the task is to approach or inspect a source, follow the LOB while monitoring frequency, level and identity. A level increase can support the decision to continue, but a sudden peak accompanied by a bearing reversal or instability may indicate a reflection or a different emitter. Keep the observation log so that the path can be reconstructed.

Specialized single-site methods

ITU material describes single-site location for some HF cases using azimuth, elevation and propagation information. Such a result depends on the applicable propagation model and system calibration; it should not be generalized to every airborne installation or frequency band.

Standards, frequency ranges and accuracy claims

U.S. guidance normally places NDB facilities in the 190–535 kHz band, while the cited ICAO range is 190–1750 kHz. The applicable regional aeronautical information publication and the actual facility determine which range matters for a particular flight.

A 1987 FAA ADF standard, reproduced in the cited technical material, specified that indicated bearing should not differ from the signal direction of arrival by more than 3 degrees for equipment operating from 190 to 535 kHz. That is a historical equipment requirement, not a universal accuracy promise for modern airborne RF-surveillance systems. Modern accuracy must be stated for the installation, frequency, antenna configuration, calibration and test conditions involved.

No single current accuracy, range or signal-strength threshold applies to every airborne RF-surveillance system. If a specification does not state its angular error, test conditions, bandwidth, update or integration time and environmental limits, the display should be treated as an indication requiring validation rather than a guaranteed measurement.

How to compare airborne RF-surveillance systems

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Frequency coverage and tuning What bands are covered, what is the tuning resolution and how is frequency error specified? A nominal channel may not reveal drift, adjacent emissions or out-of-band interference.
Instantaneous bandwidth How much spectrum is visible at once and can the system record occupied bandwidth? Wide visibility helps identify nearby signals; excessive bandwidth can raise the noise floor.
Level measurement Are units calibrated, and are detector, bandwidth, modulation, SINAD and integration conditions documented? Traceable conditions are required for meaningful level comparisons.
Bearing method Is direction found with a loop, fixed array, Doppler processing or an interferometer? Is 180-degree ambiguity resolved? The method determines failure modes, calibration needs and whether the arrow is a line or a resolved direction.
Angular accuracy What error is measured, over which frequencies, aircraft attitudes and signal levels? A single headline degree figure can hide installation and propagation limits.
Aircraft compensation How are antenna pattern, phase, fuselage shadowing and heading inputs calibrated? Installation effects can dominate the displayed angle.
Update and integration What update rate and integration time are used, and can the operator change them? Fast updates show changes but may be noisy; longer integration stabilizes weak signals but can hide short events.
Recording and correlation Can spectra, levels, bearings, aircraft state and timestamps be recorded together? Correlated records make it possible to separate signal changes from aircraft-motion effects.
Interference resilience How does the system handle multipath, polarization mismatch, co-channel signals and impulsive noise? These conditions can produce strong but false directions.

A field checklist for reporting one observation

  • UTC time and aircraft position, altitude, heading, bank and yaw state
  • Frequency, tuning accuracy or channel reference, modulation and occupied bandwidth
  • Receiver and analysis bandwidth, detector, integration time and antenna channel
  • Displayed level, units, noise floor and signal-to-noise relationship
  • Bearing value, reference frame, sense resolution and observed spread
  • Station or emission identification and any audible or decoded content
  • Nearby spectrum peaks and whether the bearing changed when they were excluded
  • Weather, precipitation static, lightning, nighttime conditions or other known interference
  • Whether the result was repeated on a steady heading and after a controlled turn
  • Confidence classification and whether the result is a line of bearing, a homing indication or a triangulated area

Use the display as a disciplined measurement, not as a single magic number: frequency establishes what energy you are examining, bandwidth reveals what else is included, level describes the received signal under explicit conditions, and bearing supplies direction relative to a stated reference. Only validated identity, repeatable geometry and documented uncertainty justify turning that direction into a location.
