Barnes & Noble’s current help instructions do not provide a method for saving a purchased NOOK eBook as a local EPUB or PDF file on your computer, so browser reading and file downloading are different things.
Read a Barnes & Noble eBook in your computer’s browser
NOOK for Web is Barnes & Noble’s documented option for reading compatible eBooks and samples on a computer. It runs in a desktop or laptop browser; Barnes & Noble lists Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari as supported. See the Using NOOK for Web instructions, last updated June 24, 2025.

- On your desktop or laptop, sign in to the Barnes & Noble account that owns the book and open your NOOK Library.
- Select the eBook’s cover or title. If it is compatible with NOOK for Web, it opens in the browser reader.
- Look for a folded-corner arrow on the cover; Barnes & Noble identifies it as a cue that the title works with NOOK for Web.
- If a sample cannot be opened from the Digital Library, Barnes & Noble says the title is not compatible with NOOK for Web.
Does this download the book file to your computer?
No local EPUB or PDF download procedure for a purchased NOOK eBook is described in the official help instructions cited here. NOOK for Web is a browser reader, not a documented way to save a book file to your computer. The reviewed instructions do not establish whether a legacy desktop app, a particular title, or an account-specific feature might offer another option; if you need a local file for offline use or personal archiving, ask Barnes & Noble support about your account and title before relying on a download being available.
Barnes & Noble’s Digital Content Terms of Sale describe purchased digital content as accessible through the NOOK Library and note that transfer to other devices depends on content type and applicable DRM. That does not establish a general export method for saving a purchased book on a computer.

Why ADE and USB transfer instructions are different
Some Barnes & Noble instructions describe moving eBooks from a computer to a NOOK. They do not explain how to download a Barnes & Noble purchase to the computer.
| Route | What it supports | Direction and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| NOOK for Web | Reading compatible Barnes & Noble eBooks and samples in a desktop or laptop browser. | Browser reading; the instructions do not describe saving a local eBook file. Compatibility varies by title. |
| Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) | Transferring supported Adobe DRM or DRM-free eBooks to a NOOK. | Starts with an eBook file already downloaded from an eBook source and moves it to the NOOK. On Windows, NOOK HD/HD+ has a special workflow: ADE unlocks the protected file, then it must be copied manually to the device’s MyFiles folder. |
| USB sideloading | Moving DRM-free EPUB or PDF files already on a computer to a NOOK/MyNOOK drive. | Computer to NOOK, not export of a purchased NOOK book to the computer. |
Likewise, NOOK Library Sync concerns bringing purchases from another NOOK, smartphone, tablet, or bn.com into a NOOK device library; it is not a computer-export feature.
