To tell whether an NFL player is expected to play, read the practice-participation and game-status sections separately, then check the official inactive list for that specific game close to kickoff. “Questionable” means uncertain, “Doubtful” means unlikely to participate, and “Out” means the player will not play; the final inactive report is the game-day check.

Read practice participation and game status as separate fields

An NFL injury report can show both what a player did in practice and the club’s estimate of whether that player will be available for the game. Those are different kinds of information: a practice label records work completed, while a game-status label describes expected availability.

Practice participation records work

Practice label What it means
Did Not Participate (DNP) The player did not participate in practice. This alone does not mean the player is out for the game.
Limited Participation The player took part in less than 100% of normal repetitions.
Full Participation The player took part in 100% of normal repetitions.

These participation definitions come from the NFL’s 2016 policy announcement on injury-report revisions. A player may have a practice designation without a game-status designation. The NFL says that when a club is certain a player will play, the player is not listed in the game-status section.

Game status estimates availability

Game-status label NFL definition
Questionable It is uncertain whether the player will play in the game.
Doubtful It is unlikely the player will participate.
Out The player will not play.

The NFL removed “Probable” because it communicated little useful uncertainty; it is not a current official game-status designation. The league said approximately 95% of players listed Probable in prior years played, a historical rationale reported in its 2016 announcement—not a current forecast for any player or game.

What the labels do—and do not—tell you

A designation is not a promise about playing time or performance. “Questionable” addresses uncertainty over whether a player will participate; it does not say how many snaps the player will take or how effective the player will be. Likewise, a limited practice entry describes practice work, not a game-day availability decision by itself.

Read the reason or injury field with the participation entry. DNP can reflect a non-injury reason, and a rested, uninjured player should be identified as not injury related rather than presented as injured, under the NFL policy. A DNP entry alone is not equivalent to “Out.”

Use this sequence to check a player

  1. Confirm the report. Check that it is for the right week, team, and matchup, and use the newest posted version. NFL report schedules vary with the game day; the 2026-27 NFL important dates page lists filing days and says reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice concludes. 2. Read practice and reason together. Note DNP, limited, or full participation alongside the listed injury or non-injury reason. Compare entries across the week rather than treating one practice line as a final decision.
  3. Read Game Status on its own. Apply the NFL meanings: Questionable is uncertain, Doubtful is unlikely, and Out means the player will not play.
  4. Check for updates. The NFL’s 2026-27 dates page says a report must be updated if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report is filed. Check the timestamp and use the latest official team or league update.
  5. Verify the inactive list near kickoff. For a final game-day decision, use the latest official inactive report for the specific matchup, such as the week-specific reports published at NFL.com’s inactive reports page.

If updates appear to conflict, prefer the newest official team or league report and note its timestamp. Do not try to infer a player’s medical condition from a participation trend.

What the inactive list means

The injury report describes a player’s reported condition and expected availability; the inactive report identifies who is inactive for that game. The inactive list is not the club’s full 53-player roster. As background, the NFL roster FAQ says the regular-season game-day active limit is 48 when a club has at least eight offensive linemen, or 47 with fewer than eight; standard practice-squad elevations can change the number available in the game-day pool. Those roster limits do not replace checking the actual inactive list for a matchup.
