Start with the declarations page, then read the coverage grant, definitions, exclusions, limits, endorsements, and claim conditions. The declarations page summarizes key details, but the full policy determines what is covered, what is excluded, how much may be paid, and what you must do after a loss.
1. Check the declarations page first
The declarations page—sometimes called an information page—summarizes the policy and its main coverage details. Check that it matches what you intended to buy:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The named insured and, where relevant, the insured property, address, vehicle, or covered drivers.
- The policy number and effective and expiration dates.
- Each coverage, its limit, and any deductible.
- Listed endorsements and, where relevant, lienholders.
- The premium and other identifying details.
Correct errors promptly and keep a written record of your request. The page is a summary, not a substitute for the full contract; the details it includes vary by policy type.

The coverage grant, also called the insuring agreement, says what kinds of loss or events the policy covers and under what terms. Read it alongside the policy’s definitions: a defined word can have a narrower or different meaning than it does in everyday conversation.

Homeowners and renters policies may cover losses from listed named perils, or provide broader coverage that is then narrowed by exclusions. The policy wording—not the general label for the policy—determines how a particular loss is treated.
3. Read exclusions in context
An exclusion is a provision that denies or restricts coverage for specified perils, people, property, or locations. Do not rely on a heading alone. Read the entire clause, including exceptions, conditions, and definitions that affect it, and compare it with the coverage grant.
Flood and earthquake are commonly excluded from homeowners or renters coverage, but that is not a universal rule. Separate policies or endorsements may change what applies, so check the contract that is actually in force.

4. Work out limits, sublimits, and deductibles
A limit is the maximum the insurer agrees to pay under the applicable coverage. A deductible is the policyholder’s share as specified by the contract. Look for separate limits or deductibles that apply to a particular category of property, event, or claim; a headline limit may not govern every loss.
For home insurance, do not assume the dwelling limit equals the home’s market value or automatically pays every rebuilding cost. Review the policy’s valuation or replacement-cost terms and any building-code upgrade coverage. Provisions that allow payment above a stated limit, or provide code-upgrade coverage, are contract-specific—not universal features.
5. Read every listed endorsement
An endorsement, sometimes called a rider, is a written change to the policy. It may add coverage, remove or restrict it, change a limit, or otherwise modify the base form.

Find the endorsements listed on the declarations page and read their actual wording alongside the base policy. Check each endorsement’s effective date, and do not assume its name or a short summary tells you everything it changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Locate your duties after a loss
Look for the policy’s post-loss conditions before you need to file a claim. Identify what it says about:
- How and when to notify the insurer.
- What proof or other information to provide.
- Cooperation and any other stated duties or deadlines.
There is no single deadline or document list that applies to every policy. Requirements depend on the contract and applicable law. Contact the insurer promptly after a loss, give complete and correct information, and check the current policy for the specific requirements.

7. Ask focused questions and keep the answer
If wording is unclear, ask the insurer, agent, or broker to point to the exact section, definition, exclusion, limit, or endorsement that answers your question. For a disputed claim decision, ask for the reason and the policy wording relied on, then retain the correspondence. Getting clarification in writing can help you keep a clear record; it is not a coverage determination for a particular claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare policies
Compare the contract terms that affect the protection you need, rather than relying on premium alone. Useful points to compare include:
- Coverage scope and exclusions.
- Limits, sublimits, and deductibles.
- Valuation or settlement basis.
- Claim-notice and proof requirements.
- Endorsements and potential coverage gaps.
For home coverage, also check whether replacement-cost terms and building-code coverage are included. Policy scope can vary by insurer, state, and endorsement, so the same label does not guarantee identical protection.

What to look for by insurance type
Homeowners and renters
Review the declarations, coverage grant, exclusions, and general conditions. A renters policy generally covers contents rather than the building structure, but check the actual contract and whether separate policies or endorsements apply. Verify whether flood or earthquake losses are excluded from your particular policy.
Auto
Check the covered drivers and vehicles, coverage types, limits, deductibles, and any excluded drivers. Reviewing these details before a loss can help you spot an error or a coverage gap while there is time to ask about it.
Health plans
A health plan’s Evidence of Coverage (EOC) describes covered and excluded care, costs, and cost-sharing. An Explanation of Benefits (EOB) explains how a processed claim was handled, including payment and, where applicable, reasons for a full or partial denial. An EOB is an explanation of a processed claim; it is not a substitute for the EOC or a property or auto policy form.
Know when general guidance is not enough
Insurance terms and legal requirements vary by product, insurer, state, and policy wording. A general guide cannot determine whether a specific loss is covered. For a policy-specific question, consult your insurer or a licensed agent or broker; your state insurance department can also provide consumer guidance.
