How to Read an Earnings Report: Revenue, EPS, Guidance, and Cash Flow

Start with the company’s earnings release for the headline numbers, then open the related Form 8-K and the fuller Form 10-Q or Form 10-K. Compare revenue, net income and EPS with the same period a year earlier, identify whether each figure is GAAP or adjusted, test management’s explanation against the statements and notes, and read guidance as a forecast rather than a result. Finally, reconcile accounting profit with operating cash flow and check the balance sheet for liquidity and obligations.

What an earnings report actually contains

“Earnings report” usually means the results a public company announces in an earnings release. For a U.S. domestic issuer, that release is commonly furnished with a Form 8-K. The release is designed to put the main results, management commentary and outlook in front of investors quickly. It is not the complete record.

The company’s quarterly Form 10-Q (or annual Form 10-K) contains the fuller income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, notes, risk disclosures and management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A). Use the release to locate the important changes; use the filing to understand definitions, accounting policies, liquidity, commitments and uncertainty. Foreign issuers may use different SEC forms, so confirm the filing structure for the company’s country and listing.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy says in its “How to Read a 10-K/10-Q” bulletin (January 25, 2021): “The SEC does not vouch for the accuracy of a 10-K or 10-Q.” The agency sets disclosure requirements and reviews filings, but that review is not a certification that every statement is correct. Your job is to understand what is reported, how it was calculated and what could change it.

Use this reading order

  1. Identify the business and its economics. Read the Business section and note what the company sells, its principal markets, customer concentration, seasonal patterns and operating factors such as commodity prices or foreign exchange.
  2. Choose a like-for-like comparison. For a quarter, begin with the same quarter of the prior year. Add year-to-date figures when seasonality, acquisitions or a one-time event could distort a quarter-to-quarter comparison.
  3. Read the headline measures. Record revenue, operating income, net income and EPS. Mark each as GAAP, adjusted, basic or diluted.
  4. Find the drivers. Read MD&A for management’s explanation of material changes, liquidity, capital resources, trends and uncertainties. Treat this as management’s account and test it against the statements and notes.
  5. Check the balance sheet and cash flow. Look at cash, debt, receivables, inventory, payables and operating cash flow rather than relying on a single metric in the release.
  6. Read the outlook last. Write down the guidance period, the full range, its assumptions and any change from the prior outlook. A forecast is not revenue or profit already earned.

Revenue: the top line, not the whole story

Revenue is the company’s reported sales for the stated period. Start with the exact label in the release: “revenue,” “net sales,” “total revenue” or a segment-specific measure can have different scopes. Then ask how the number changed and why.

Questions to ask about revenue

  • How does the current quarter compare with the same quarter last year?
  • Was growth caused by higher volume, higher prices, product mix, acquisitions, divestitures, currency movements or a combination?
  • Are reported growth and “organic” growth defined differently? Read the company’s definition before comparing them.
  • Did one segment, geography or customer account for most of the change?
  • Does the year-to-date trend support the quarter, or is the quarter an isolated spike?

For example, WEX reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $753.5 million, up 14.2% from the prior-year quarter. Its July 22, 2026 release identified favorable fuel-price and foreign-exchange impacts. Those figures illustrate how to connect a percentage change with its stated drivers; they are not a growth benchmark for other companies.

Revenue growth can coexist with weaker profitability if costs rise faster than sales. After recording the top line, move to margins, net income and cash rather than treating growth alone as a verdict.

EPS: profit allocated to each share

Investor.gov defines earnings per share as “A public company’s net profit divided by the number of its common shares.” In practice, the denominator matters. Basic EPS uses the basic weighted-average share count; diluted EPS includes potential common shares, such as options or convertible securities, when their inclusion would reduce EPS.

How to read an EPS line

  • Identify whether the figure is basic or diluted.
  • Identify whether it is GAAP or adjusted.
  • Compare it with the same period last year and, when supplied, the company’s prior outlook.
  • Read the share-count line. Buybacks can lift EPS even when total net income is flat; stock issuance can dilute it.
  • Check whether discontinued operations, a tax benefit, restructuring, impairment or another unusual item affected net income.

Envista’s SEC-filed second-quarter 2026 release reported GAAP diluted EPS of $0.33 and adjusted diluted EPS of $0.41. The difference is meaningful only after reading the reconciliation and understanding the excluded items. It is a dated company example, not a standard spread between GAAP and adjusted EPS.

GAAP versus adjusted results

GAAP figures follow generally accepted accounting principles and are the anchor for comparing the company’s reported financial statements. Companies may also present non-GAAP measures called adjusted, normalized or constant-currency results. These can help isolate an operating trend, but the company chooses the adjustments.

Measure What it tells you What to verify
GAAP revenue, income and EPS Results prepared under the applicable accounting rules Period, segment scope, accounting changes and unusual items recorded in the statements
Adjusted revenue, income or EPS A company-defined view that removes or changes selected items Reconciliation to the closest GAAP measure and whether the adjustments recur
Basic EPS Profit per basic weighted-average share Share count and any unusual net-income components
Diluted EPS Profit per share after potentially dilutive securities are considered Potential shares, anti-dilution effects and the diluted share count

Investor.gov explains that companies presenting non-GAAP measures must show how they differ from the most comparable GAAP measure. Do not assume that “adjusted” is more accurate. An adjustment may remove a genuinely unusual event, or it may remove a cost that recurs every year. Read the reconciliation, ask whether the item required cash, and see whether the same adjustment appears in earlier periods.

Guidance is a forecast with assumptions

Guidance is management’s outlook for a future period. It may cover the next quarter, the full year or both, and it may provide GAAP revenue alongside non-GAAP earnings. Record the entire range, not just the midpoint, and compare it with the previous range.

Guidance checklist

  • Period: Is the outlook for the next quarter, the full fiscal year or a multi-year target?
  • Metric: Is it revenue, operating margin, GAAP EPS, adjusted EPS, net income or cash flow?
  • Range: What are the low and high ends, and how do they compare with prior guidance?
  • Assumptions: Note tax rates, fuel or commodity prices, currency rates, credit losses, interest expense, acquisitions and diluted shares.
  • Change: Was guidance raised, lowered or reaffirmed, and did the assumptions change?
  • Risks: Read the forward-looking statements and risk factors that could make actual results differ.

WEX’s July 2026 release gave full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $2.86 billion to $2.90 billion and provided assumptions including fuel prices, tax rate, credit losses and diluted shares. It also said adjusted net-income guidance could not be reconciled to GAAP without unreasonable effort because uncertain items could not reasonably be estimated. That limitation is important: a missing reconciliation can reflect genuine forecasting uncertainty, not proof that the adjusted forecast is wrong.

When actual results arrive, compare them with the old range that was in force before the announcement. Comparing results only with the newest range can hide whether management repeatedly moved the goalposts.

Cash flow: follow the movement of cash

The statement of cash flows reports cash generated and used during the period. It is organized into operating, investing and financing activities.

Operating cash flow

Operating cash flow starts with accounting results and adjusts for non-cash items and changes in working capital. Receivables, inventory, payables, contract liabilities and other operating balances can make cash flow diverge from net income. Read the notes and MD&A for the explanation instead of assuming the difference signals a problem or a strength.

Investing and financing cash flow

  • Investing: Capital expenditures, acquisitions, asset sales and investments in securities often appear here.
  • Financing: Borrowing and repayment, share issuance, buybacks and dividends appear here.
  • Liquidity: Compare cash and available borrowing with near-term debt maturities, lease obligations and other commitments on the balance sheet and in the notes.

Free cash flow and adjusted cash measures

Free cash flow is not a single mandated GAAP line. A company may define it as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, while another may make additional adjustments. Envista’s supplemental schedules defined its free-cash-flow measure; WEX presented adjusted free cash flow as a non-GAAP measure with its own explanation and reconciliation. Read the definition before comparing either metric with another issuer.

Envista reported $119 million of operating cash flow and $105 million of free cash flow for the second quarter of 2026. Those are company-specific figures from that release, not a general conversion rate from earnings to cash.

Why earnings and cash can diverge

Situation Effect on reported earnings Possible cash-flow effect
Revenue booked before collection Raises revenue and profit when recognized Receivables rise, reducing operating cash until customers pay
Depreciation or amortization Reduces accounting profit Added back in operating cash flow because it is non-cash in the current period
Inventory build May not affect profit until inventory is sold Uses cash immediately
Deferred revenue or customer prepayments May be recognized as revenue over time Cash can arrive before the related revenue is reported
Capital expenditure Usually does not reduce current-period profit through the full purchase price Appears as an investing cash outflow

Use the cash-flow statement, balance sheet and notes together. A single quarter of weak operating cash flow may reflect timing, while a recurring gap between profit and cash deserves a closer explanation.

Compare the right things

Comparison Why it matters How to perform it
Current quarter versus same quarter last year Controls for many seasonal patterns Compare revenue, margins, net income, EPS and cash flow for both periods
Quarter versus year-to-date Shows whether a short-term move fits the broader fiscal trend Use the 10-Q’s quarter and year-to-date columns
GAAP versus adjusted Shows the cost of management’s chosen exclusions Read the reconciliation and classify recurring versus unusual items
Actual results versus prior guidance Tests the forecast that investors actually received Use the guidance range published before the results
Current guidance versus prior guidance Shows a raised, lowered or reaffirmed outlook Compare both ranges and the assumptions behind them
Net income versus operating cash flow Separates accounting profit from cash generation Investigate working-capital and non-cash adjustments

For a seasonal business, a sequential decline from the prior quarter may be normal. A same-quarter year-over-year comparison and the year-to-date columns provide a more useful baseline.

Find the details in the filing

Form 8-K and the earnings release

Use the 8-K filing and attached release to locate the date, headline figures, management commentary, non-GAAP reconciliations and outlook. Check whether the release is furnished under the applicable 8-K item and whether exhibits contain the tables referenced in the text.

Form 10-Q

The quarterly 10-Q supplies unaudited financial statements for the quarter and year-to-date period, notes, MD&A, market-risk information and controls disclosures. Use its definitions when a release uses a shortened label such as “adjusted free cash flow.”

Form 10-K

The annual 10-K provides audited annual statements, a fuller business description, risk factors, selected data and longer-term trends. It is the right place to check recurring costs, debt maturities, segment policy and the auditor’s report.

Notes and MD&A

Notes explain revenue recognition, leases, debt, taxes, stock compensation, acquisitions, contingencies and segment reporting. MD&A explains material period-to-period changes, liquidity, capital resources and known trends. Read both: MD&A is management’s interpretation, while the notes show the accounting detail supporting it.

A repeatable 15-minute workflow

  1. Write down the fiscal quarter, fiscal year and release date.
  2. Copy revenue, net income, basic EPS, diluted EPS and operating cash flow into a simple comparison sheet.
  3. Add the same-period prior-year and year-to-date values from the filing.
  4. Label every value GAAP or non-GAAP and record the company’s definition.
  5. Calculate the direction of change, but do not infer a cause until you have read MD&A.
  6. List the stated drivers: volume, price, mix, currency, acquisitions, costs and working capital.
  7. Read the reconciliation for every adjusted measure and note whether exclusions required cash.
  8. Check cash, debt, receivables, inventory and payables on the balance sheet.
  9. Record guidance’s low and high ends, assumptions and change from the previous outlook.
  10. Read the risk factors and forward-looking statement before deciding how much confidence to place in the forecast.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using only the headline release: Open the 10-Q or 10-K for statements, notes and risk discussion.
  • Comparing with the previous quarter in a seasonal business: Start with the same quarter last year and check year-to-date results.
  • Treating adjusted EPS as the “real” EPS: Put the adjusted number beside GAAP EPS and inspect every exclusion.
  • Reading a guidance midpoint as a promise: Keep the full range and assumptions visible.
  • Calling free cash flow universal: Copy the issuer’s definition before making a cross-company comparison.
  • Ignoring share count: Separate changes in total net income from changes caused by buybacks or dilution.
  • Assuming an SEC review is an accuracy guarantee: The SEC sets disclosure rules and reviews filings but does not vouch for their accuracy.

What a sound conclusion looks like

A useful earnings reading does not end with “revenue was up” or “EPS beat.” It states whether growth came from durable operating activity or temporary factors, whether GAAP and adjusted results differ materially, whether cash generation supports reported profit, and whether the balance sheet can fund the company’s obligations. It also records what management expects next and which assumptions could invalidate that outlook.

Keep the release, the filing tables, the reconciliation schedules and your comparison calculations together. That record lets you evaluate the next report against the same definitions instead of changing the standard after each announcement.
