First map the entrance, corridors, halls, shafts, chapel or shrine, and burial chamber; then record where each text and image appears and which way it is oriented. Only after that should you ask what a feature means or who used it.
The same method also separates an original design from later reuse. Changes in names, titles, decoration, masonry, room connections, shafts, and inserted objects can reveal several phases, but no single clue automatically identifies an owner or date. The strongest interpretation is a documented chain of observations with confidence levels attached.

1. Map the tomb before interpreting it
A plan is the foundation of every later conclusion. A tomb’s route controls how a visitor, officiant, or burial party moved through it, and the location of a text can be as informative as its wording. Begin with a measured or published plan if one exists, but redraw it in a simple form that you can annotate.

Trace direction and geometry
Use arrows to show movement. Mark whether the route descends, turns, jogs off axis, or ends in a separate room. A T-shaped chapel, a straight descending sequence, and a joggled-axis royal tomb are different architectural statements; none should be treated as the universal Egyptian template.
| Tomb or complex | Plan and movement described by the institution | What the layout lets you examine |
|---|---|---|
| TT 416 and TT 417 | Private chapels with a transverse hall leading to a long hall | How scenes of the owners’ lives occupy the transverse halls while funerary scenes occupy the long halls, and how later shafts and rooms were added |
| KV9 | A descending sequence of corridors leading to a burial chamber | How successive funerary compositions are distributed along a route rather than concentrated in one room |
| KV17 | A joggled axis: corridors and descending passages reach a pillared room, then another descent begins off axis; an axial doorway leads to a separate room | How a deliberate change in direction affects the reading of a royal sequence without requiring an unproven symbolic explanation |
| Kampp23, Al-Assasif | An open courtyard with mudbrick-wall remnants and entrance niches, followed by a T-shaped arrangement and a corridor to a shrine | How an exterior court, surviving mudbrick, and an internal T-plan can be documented separately from a tentative owner identification |
Separate observation from interpretation
Write “the corridor turns left after the pillared room” before writing “the turn represents a ritual transition.” The first is a visible architectural fact; the second is an interpretation that may remain uncertain. This discipline prevents a compelling theory from changing the plan you are trying to explain.
2. Read inscriptions in their architectural context
Do not treat a hieroglyphic panel as a detachable caption. Record its room, wall, height, orientation, relationship to figures, and treatment compared with nearby decoration. The Metropolitan Museum’s Ancient Egyptian Epigraphy and Palaeography explains that architectural context and orientation can help reconstruct a monument’s function, while also warning that context does not automatically produce a translation.
Make an inscription register
- Identify the location. Give the tomb number, room number, wall, side, and approximate position. Note whether the text is on a corridor, ceiling, doorway, pillar, false door, or burial-chamber wall.
- Record orientation. Describe the direction of figures and signs, the side of the route on which the panel appears, and whether the composition faces toward or away from the next space. Orientation is evidence to preserve, not a shortcut to meaning.
- Describe the visual relationship. State whether the text accompanies deities, offering scenes, human figures, astronomical imagery, or an otherwise undecorated surface. Note borders, registers, columns, and any interruption by a doorway or later patch.
- Compare execution. Look for differences in carving depth, paint, line quality, spacing, or signs that a panel was finished at a different time from its neighbors. Such differences suggest a phase to investigate; they do not by themselves establish who commissioned it.
- Transcribe cautiously. Use a sign reference or introductory hieroglyphs dictionary for identification, but distinguish a tentative sign reading from a specialist translation and from your own architectural interpretation.
Use distribution as evidence
Funerary compositions may be spread across corridors, ceilings, and burial chambers. KV9 demonstrates why a room-by-room register matters: its early descending passages include the Book of Gates, Book of Caverns, and Books of the Heavens; later passages include the Amduat, Book of the Dead, and Books of the Heavens; the burial chamber includes the Book of the Earth. The sequence is a documented feature of KV9, not a template for every royal tomb.

Do not equate placement with a complete explanation
A text on a ceiling may relate to the surface above the deceased, and a text beside a doorway may mark movement between spaces, but those are hypotheses unless the evidence supports them. State the placement precisely, cite the institutional description, and label any proposed function as an inference.
3. Detect later additions and reuse
Later history is usually reconstructed by comparing several kinds of evidence. Look for a changed route, a newly cut shaft, masonry that does not match adjacent walls, a name written over an earlier name, traces of an older title, or an object inserted into an existing room. Reuse can alter the structure, reassign a decorated chapel, change texts and images, or affect an associated part of the funerary complex.
Structural clues
- New rooms or shafts: A shaft cut into an earlier floor or a room added beyond an original wall indicates a physical modification. TT 416 and TT 417 are explicit examples: both chapels were reused in the Late Period, when rooms and funerary shafts were added.
- Changed connections: A blocked doorway, an opening that cuts through earlier decoration, or a route that no longer follows the first plan can reveal a later phase.
- Masonry differences: Compare stone dressing, plaster, paint preparation, and mudbrick with neighboring surfaces. At Kampp23, the open courtyard and remnants of mudbrick walls are part of the architectural description and should not be collapsed into the later question of ownership.
- Inserted objects: A burial, statue, false door, or other object placed in an older decorated space can show reassignment even when the room itself was not rebuilt.
Textual and visual clues
- Overwritten names: A later name written over an earlier one is evidence of intervention. Preserve any surviving traces of the first name instead of reporting only the final version.
- Titles that do not match: A title may belong to a different person or phase. The official account of Kampp23 reports evidence of reuse but cautions that titles associated elsewhere with a person named Amun-Mes have not been confirmed as belonging to the tomb’s owner.
- Uneven decoration: A panel that stops at a new doorway, differs in style, or leaves an earlier image visible can indicate reallocation or alteration.
Build a phased chronology
Create a table with one row per observation and columns for “visible evidence,” “earliest phase it could represent,” “later phase it could represent,” and “confidence.” A name change alone may show reuse but not the date of the change. A new shaft that cuts through an older decorated floor provides a stronger relative sequence: the floor came first, the shaft later. Keep the owner and date open when the evidence does not identify them.

4. Case studies: applying the method
KV9: a route carrying several funerary compositions
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes KV9 as begun by Ramesses V and enlarged and used for burial by Ramesses VI. The ministry also notes uncertainty about whether Ramesses V was ultimately buried there. Start with that qualified history rather than assigning every feature to one king.

On the plan, mark the descending corridors in order and then the burial chamber. On the inscription register, place the Book of Gates, Book of Caverns, and Books of the Heavens in the early descending passages; the Amduat, Book of the Dead, and Books of the Heavens in later passages; and the Book of the Earth in the burial chamber. The useful conclusion is spatial: different compositions occupy different stages of the route. It is not evidence that all royal tombs repeat KV9’s sequence.
TT 416 and TT 417: additions to private chapels
The ministry describes the chapels of Amenhotep Rabuia (TT 416) and Samut (TT 417) as a transverse hall leading to a long hall. Scenes from the owners’ lives appear in the transverse halls, while funerary scenes occupy the long halls. Record those associations as room-specific observations.
Both chapels were reused in the Late Period, when rooms and funerary shafts were added. This is a clear example of later construction attached to an earlier layout. When drawing the plan, use a different line style for the added rooms and shafts, and keep the original and later phases in separate columns in your notes.
KV17: a joggled-axis sequence
For Sety I’s KV17, the ministry identifies a joggled-axis plan. An initial series of corridors and descending passages reaches a pillared room; a further descent then begins off axis toward the burial chamber, while an axial doorway leads to a separate room.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That geometry should be described before any symbolic reading. The off-axis descent is a deliberate change in route, but the plan alone does not establish the purpose of every feature. Pair the route diagram with the location and orientation of each decoration, and mark proposed functions as interpretations.
Kampp23 in Al-Assasif: architecture before attribution
The ministry describes Kampp23 as a rock-cut tomb with an open courtyard, remnants of mudbrick walls, niches flanking the entrance, and a T-shaped arrangement whose corridor leads to a shrine. It reports evidence for later reuse.
The same account cautions that titles associated elsewhere with Amun-Mes have not been confirmed as belonging to the tomb’s owner. A careful description therefore has two separate sentences: one for what the architecture shows and another for the status of the proposed identification. Do not turn an unconfirmed title into a definitive owner label on your plan.

Raemkai’s chapel: an earlier name that survives reuse
The Metropolitan Museum reports that the chapel was originally built and decorated for Neferiretnes and later reused for Raemkai. Traces of Neferiretnes’s name and titles remain on the false door. This compact example demonstrates why a later user’s name does not erase the earlier phase.

In a drawing, mark the surviving earlier inscription separately from the later allocation of the chapel. In a catalogue entry, attribute the chronology to the museum’s description rather than presenting it as a personal discovery.
The Pyramid of Unas: reuse beyond the tomb interior
The ministry states that the Pyramid Texts were inscribed in Unas’s burial chamber and that much of the causeway’s decoration was removed and reused by later kings. The lesson is methodological: inspect the entire funerary complex, not only the burial chamber. A later phase may be visible in a causeway, court, or wall that is functionally connected to the tomb.

- Set the scope. Decide whether you are studying the tomb alone, its chapel and court, or the wider funerary complex. Write that boundary at the top of your notes.
- Make a clean base plan. Draw rooms and doorways without interpretation. Add a north arrow or another consistent orientation only when the plan provides one.
- Number the route. Use a single sequence from entrance to burial chamber, with letters for side rooms and branches.
- Mark vertical movement. Add arrows and level changes for descents, shafts, ramps, and stairs. Note blocked or inaccessible passages.
- Catalogue decoration by surface. For every wall, ceiling, pillar, and doorway, record text, figures, composition, orientation, and execution.
- Compare neighboring surfaces. Look for changes in plaster, paint, carving, borders, spacing, or unfinished areas that may indicate different phases.
- Test the plan against names and titles. Record every personal name, erased trace, and title, but do not assign ownership when the institutional account leaves it unconfirmed.
- Identify physical interventions. Mark added shafts, cut-through doorways, new rooms, inserted objects, blocked openings, and masonry that differs from the original fabric.
- Order the phases. Use cutting relationships and surviving earlier decoration to establish relative sequence; add absolute dates only when an institution provides them.
- Assign confidence. Label each statement as observed, strongly supported, plausible, or unresolved. Keep alternative explanations visible rather than choosing one for narrative convenience.
6. How to compare two tombs without forcing a match
Use the same five questions for each monument, then compare the answers rather than searching for identical features:
Recommended Free Tools
- Geometry: Is the route straight, descending, T-shaped, branching, or joggled?
- Movement: Which rooms come first, and where does the route change direction or level?
- Text placement: Which compositions occur in corridors, ceilings, halls, pillars, doorways, or burial chambers, and how are they oriented?
- Later phases: Are there added shafts, rooms, altered names, reused chapels, or changes in associated spaces?
- Attribution: Which owner and date are secure, and which remain tentative?
This framework prevents a feature documented in one tomb from becoming an unsupported rule for all Egyptian monuments. KV9, KV17, and the TT chapels already demonstrate how different the plans and decorative distributions can be.
7. Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Starting with a famous image: Return to the plan and locate the image’s exact room and wall before interpreting it.
- Assuming the first named person owned everything: Check for overwritten names, surviving earlier traces, and later burials or objects.
- Treating a translation as independent of architecture: Record orientation and placement even when the text is not fully translated.
- Calling every difference a separate dynasty or owner: Style and masonry changes indicate a phase to investigate, not an automatic historical identity.
- Using one tomb as a template: Compare geometry and room sequence across several monuments before generalizing.
- Turning a possible association into a fact: Preserve the ministry’s qualification at Kampp23 regarding Amun-Mes and any similar unresolved attribution.
- Ignoring the wider complex: Check courts and causeways, as the Pyramid of Unas shows that later removal and reuse can affect areas outside the burial chamber.
8. Optional tools for studying inscriptions
An introductory hieroglyphs dictionary or reference book can help identify signs, common groupings, and basic transliteration conventions. Use it as a sign-identification aid, not as a substitute for architectural context, dating evidence, or specialist translation. Keep the inscription register and plan beside the book so that every proposed reading remains tied to a physical location.
What a defensible reading looks like
A defensible interpretation lets another reader follow the route, find each inscription, see which features belong to which phase, and distinguish observation from inference. It can say that a corridor descends, a composition occupies a particular passage, a shaft cuts an earlier surface, or an earlier name survives on a reused false door. It must also say when an owner, date, or symbolic purpose remains unconfirmed. That combination of mapped space, situated texts, comparative evidence, and explicit uncertainty is how an ancient Egyptian tomb becomes a readable historical record rather than a collection of isolated pictures.
