A wider spread means the market is demanding more compensation for bearing that contract’s credit risk; it does not prove that bankruptcy is imminent. To assess an AI company, identify the exact CDS contract, compare the spread with its history and peers, inspect the tenor curve, convert the quote into a cautious risk-neutral estimate, and test the signal against debt, leases, liquidity, cash flow, capex and refinancing needs.
What an AI company’s CDS spread actually measures
In a CDS, the protection buyer pays a periodic premium to a protection seller. If a contractually defined credit event occurs on the reference entity, the seller compensates the buyer for the loss on the insured debt, usually through cash settlement based on an auction recovery price. The quoted spread is normally expressed in basis points per year: 100 basis points (bps) equals 1 percentage point of the insured notional.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A 164-bps quote therefore represents an indicated annual premium of about 1.64% of notional before considering payment frequency, accrued premium, discounting, settlement mechanics and any upfront amount. On $10 million of insured notional, that simple multiplication is approximately $164,000 per year. S&P Global Market Intelligence reported that as an illustrative quote for a described AI-cloud issuer on February 27, 2026; it is a dated example, not a universal danger line.
The spread is a market price, not an accounting ratio or a direct forecast of legal insolvency. It incorporates expected loss, the value and timing of recovery, interest rates, risk aversion, dealer balance sheets, liquidity and technical positioning. S&P Global’s March 2, 2026 analysis states that widening CDS spreads do not imply an imminent default; they reflect investors’ demand for higher risk compensation and their focus on earnings and fundamentals.

Start by identifying the exact CDS contract
Two quotes that appear to describe the same company can represent materially different risks. Record the following fields before interpreting a move:
- Reference entity: confirm the legal borrower named in the contract, not merely the parent, operating subsidiary or a similarly named affiliate.
- Seniority: senior unsecured, subordinated and other classes have different recovery prospects and can trade at different spreads.
- Currency: a dollar contract and a euro contract can reflect different funding markets, hedging costs and investor bases.
- Restructuring convention: the applicable ISDA convention determines which restructuring events can trigger settlement and how deliverable obligations are handled.
- Maturity: note the exact date for a one-, three-, five-, seven- or ten-year point; a five-year quote is not interchangeable with a one-year quote.
- Timestamp and source: save the time, dealer composite or index designation, and whether the number is a firm executable market or an indicative estimate.
- Bid-ask spread and quote depth: a single midpoint in a thin market can be less informative than several competing quotes with narrow markets.
Without these details, a chart can create false precision. A move may come from changing contract composition, a different dealer mark or a roll to a new maturity rather than a change in the issuer’s underlying credit.
Read the spread level and its trend together
Use the company’s own history
First compare today’s spread with the same contract’s recent and long-run history. A move from 70 to 110 bps means something different from a move from 500 to 540 bps. Record the absolute level, the change in bps and the percentage change, while keeping the tenor, seniority and currency constant.

Look for persistence rather than reacting to one print. A widening that reverses within hours can reflect a dealer hedge, a large order or a temporary liquidity gap. A widening that remains elevated across several sessions and maturities deserves a fundamental explanation. The converse also applies: a brief tightening does not erase a deteriorating maturity schedule or negative cash generation.
Separate issuer-specific moves from sector moves
Compare the issuer with close peers that have similar ratings, business models, leverage and debt structure. If the entire technology or AI credit sector widens, the change may represent a higher macro risk premium, interest-rate volatility, concern about capital markets or a repricing of the sector’s growth assumptions. If the target company widens while comparable names remain stable, company-specific information is more likely.
S&P Global Market Intelligence reported that described BBB technology peers averaged about 68 bps for five-year CDS through mid-February 2026. It also reported that the BB-versus-BBB information-technology index differential was about 25 bps at one year and 65 bps at five years on February 27, 2026. Those observations show how rating and tenor affect relative pricing; they are dated market snapshots, not thresholds that predict an AI default.

Use the tenor curve to locate the market’s concern
Plot available one-, three-, five-, seven- and ten-year spreads. The shape contains information that a single five-year number cannot:
| Curve pattern | Possible interpretation | Checks to perform |
|---|---|---|
| Front end sharply above the long end | Investors see concentrated near-term event, liquidity or refinancing risk. | Review cash, revolver availability, the next two years of maturities, covenant tests and upcoming earnings. |
| Long end persistently high | The market is pricing a longer-lived leverage, profitability or solvency problem. | Test the path to positive free cash flow, total debt reduction and sustainable financing for infrastructure. |
| Curve broadly shifts wider | Risk premium may be rising across the issuer or sector. | Compare peer curves, equity volatility, rates and index CDS for a macro explanation. |
| Isolated point moves | Could be a liquidity gap, stale mark or maturity-specific technical flow. | Check bid-ask width, dealer count and whether adjacent tenors moved. |
These are signals, not deterministic rules. A steep front-end curve can reflect a known refinancing that is likely to be completed, while a flat curve can conceal long-dated structural risk. Always connect the shape to the issuer’s contractual obligations.
Convert a spread into a default-risk estimate—carefully
The flat-curve shortcut
Under a simplifying flat-curve assumption, the approximate hazard rate is:
λ ≈ S ÷ (1 − R)
Here, S is the annual CDS spread as a decimal, R is the assumed recovery rate, and λ is the annual intensity of a contractual credit event. S&P Dow Jones Indices and ISDA describe this relationship as S/(1-R) under a flat credit curve assumption.
If the hazard rate is treated as constant, survival to time t is:

Illustrative calculation
Suppose an analyst uses the dated 164-bps example and, solely for illustration, assumes 40% recovery. The spread is 0.0164 and the loss-given-recovery fraction is 0.60, producing an approximate hazard rate of 0.0273, or 2.73% per year. The resulting constant-hazard estimates are:
| Horizon | Approximate cumulative event probability | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | About 2.7% | Risk-neutral probability of a qualifying event within one year under the assumptions. |
| 5 years | About 12.8% | Not a forecast of bankruptcy and not a physical probability. |
| 10 years | About 24.0% | Highly sensitive to the flat-curve and recovery assumptions. |
These figures are a mathematical illustration, not an estimate of that issuer’s actual default likelihood. Changing recovery from 40% to 20% or 60% materially changes the hazard rate. Real CDS pricing also reflects discounting, premium accrual, payment timing, stochastic recovery, upfront payments and the full term structure.
Bootstrap a non-flat curve when precision matters
For a serious analysis, use all quoted maturities rather than forcing one spread into a constant hazard rate. A standard workflow is to solve for the first interval’s survival probability, then use each longer-dated CDS contract to solve the next interval while matching the premium and protection legs. The resulting year-by-year survival curve can be integrated to obtain cumulative event probabilities at selected dates. The calculation should use the contract’s payment schedule, discount curve, recovery assumption and restructuring terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMarket-implied probabilities are risk-neutral: they include compensation investors demand for bearing risk, not only their statistical expectation of an event. The European Systemic Risk Board noted in 2025 that CDS-implied probabilities represent the market-implied probability of a credit event recognized by the relevant Determinations Committee, rather than necessarily an actual default under the applicable legal framework.
Check what would count as a credit event
CDS protection responds to the contract’s event definitions, which can include failure to pay, bankruptcy and specified restructuring. A company can trigger a credit event without entering a court-supervised bankruptcy under local law. Conversely, severe financial stress may not trigger a settlement if the contractual conditions are not met.
This distinction matters for cross-border AI groups with operating subsidiaries, guarantees, lease obligations and multiple bond programs. Determine which entity is referenced, which obligations are deliverable, and how the restructuring convention treats maturity extensions, payment deferrals or exchanges. Never label a risk-neutral CDS probability as a probability of “bankruptcy” without this qualification.

Test the spread against the AI company’s fundamentals
Total debt, leases and guarantees
Start with funded debt, then add material finance and operating lease commitments and guaranteed obligations. AI-cloud and data-center businesses can commit to long-lived capacity, power and equipment contracts that do not appear in a simple debt headline. Reconcile reported debt with bond indentures, lease notes and guarantees so leverage reflects claims that compete for cash.
Maturity wall and refinancing plan
Build a year-by-year schedule of principal maturities, lease payments, revolver expiries and expected capital-market needs. A front-end CDS spike is more concerning when a large maturity arrives before the company is generating cash or has committed financing. For AI infrastructure, ask whether the refinancing plan assumes continued access to high-yield, leveraged-loan or asset-backed markets and whether collateral is already pledged.
Cash, facilities and liquidity access
Separate unrestricted cash from restricted balances and customer funds. Confirm the size, availability and maturity of committed revolving facilities, then deduct drawn amounts, letters of credit and borrowing-base limits. Liquidity is only a buffer if it can be accessed when needed; facilities with tight covenants or springing tests may be unavailable during stress.
Free cash flow and the route to profitability
Review operating cash flow after working-capital movements, maintenance and growth capital expenditure, and cash interest. A company can report positive adjusted EBITDA while consuming cash because of servers, networking, data-center deposits or customer acquisition. Map management’s path to positive free cash flow and test what happens if utilization, pricing or financing costs fall short.
Capex intensity and AI build-out commitments
AI capacity requires expensive accelerators, power, cooling and network infrastructure. Compare committed and planned capex with internal cash generation and financing capacity. Distinguish cancellable purchase orders from take-or-pay arrangements and long-term capacity contracts. A spread widening alongside escalating capex and rising lease obligations is more meaningful than a widening accompanied by a funded, flexible investment program.

Ratings and outlook
Read the rating rationale, outlook and downgrade triggers, not just the letter grade. Focus on leverage, interest coverage, liquidity, free cash flow, secured debt and expected financing. A CDS spread can move before a rating action, while a rating can remain unchanged during a market repricing. Treat the two as complementary signals.
Collateral, seniority and recovery
Estimate which creditors are secured, structurally senior at subsidiaries or protected by guarantees. The recovery assumption in a CDS model should be consistent with the reference obligation and capital structure. A senior unsecured spread cannot be interpreted using the recovery prospects of valuable but ring-fenced assets owned by another entity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluate market quality before trusting a move
CDS can be less liquid than bonds or equities, particularly for smaller issuers and long maturities. Record the bid-ask width, number of dealers contributing, quote age, notional size and whether the quote is a composite, index or executable price. A wide market means the midpoint may not be a tradeable level.
Recommended Free Tools
Check whether one unusually large transaction caused the move. Compare dealer quotes, nearby maturities, the issuer’s bonds and peer CDS. If only one tenor from one source moves while related instruments are unchanged, classify the signal as low confidence until corroborated. Thin markets can overstate risk when sellers demand a liquidity premium, or understate it when stale marks have not adjusted.
A practical decision framework
| Observation | Stronger evidence of worsening credit | Alternative explanation to test |
|---|---|---|
| Five-year spread widens | Move persists, peers are stable, bonds weaken and liquidity falls. | Sector-wide risk-premium or rates shock. |
| One-year spread jumps above five-year | Large near-term maturity, covenant test or facility expiry. | Temporary dealer imbalance or event-driven hedge. |
| Spread is far above rating peers | Higher leverage, leases, negative free cash flow or weaker collateral. | Contract mismatch, stale peer quotes or different restructuring terms. |
| CDS tightens after an announcement | New committed financing, asset sale or debt reduction improves liquidity. | Short covering or thin-market technical move without fundamental change. |
| Curve and fundamentals disagree | Investigate the discrepancy before reaching a verdict. | Market may anticipate a change not yet visible in financial statements. |
A disciplined conclusion should state the contract, date, level, change, curve shape, peer comparison, fundamental drivers and market-quality confidence. Use language such as “the market is pricing higher risk-neutral credit-event compensation” rather than “default is certain.”
Worked reading of a dated AI-cloud example
Consider the AI-cloud participant described by S&P Global Market Intelligence on February 27, 2026. The reported illustration priced five-year protection at about 164 bps, equivalent to roughly $164,000 a year on $10 million of notional using a simple spread calculation. The article connected wider quotes with debt and lease obligations, capital-intensive build-out, negative free cash flow and refinancing plans.
The correct reading is conditional. First, verify that the quote refers to the intended seniority, currency and reference entity. Next, compare its five-year level with the approximately 68-bps average reported for described BBB peers and inspect one-year and longer maturities. Then test whether the issuer’s debt, leases, cash, facilities and maturity wall justify the premium. Finally, check whether the quote was broad and persistent or merely an isolated mark. The 164-bps figure signals materially higher compensation than the cited peer average, but it does not establish an imminent default or a universal AI-sector threshold.

Common mistakes that produce bad conclusions
- Treating bps as a probability: 164 bps is a premium rate, not 16.4% annual default risk. Recovery and the risk-neutral adjustment are essential.
- Calling the quote a bankruptcy forecast: CDS responds to contractual credit events, which are broader and different from a court’s legal classification.
- Ignoring recovery: The same spread implies different hazard rates at different recovery assumptions.
- Comparing unlike contracts: Mixing seniority, currency, tenor, restructuring convention or reference entities invalidates the peer comparison.
- Using one maturity: A five-year average can hide a near-term refinancing cliff visible in the one-year point.
- Ignoring leases and guarantees: AI infrastructure obligations can consume cash without appearing in a headline debt figure.
- Overlooking liquidity: A stale composite or wide bid-ask can make a move look more precise than it is.
- Assuming a rating is current: Ratings often lag market prices and can remain unchanged through a rapid repricing.
- Inventing a danger threshold: No authoritative source establishes a CDS spread level that guarantees an AI-company default.
How to monitor an AI issuer over time
- Save a consistent daily or weekly snapshot of each tenor, bid, ask, midpoint, timestamp and source.
- Maintain a peer set matched for rating, seniority, currency, business model and maturity.
- Update the debt-and-lease maturity wall after every financing, acquisition, capacity contract or refinancing.
- Reconcile cash, committed facilities, restricted balances, collateral and covenant headroom each reporting period.
- Track free cash flow after growth capex and compare actual spending with the stated AI build-out plan.
- Recalculate indicative hazard and cumulative risk-neutral probabilities when spreads or recovery assumptions change, documenting every assumption.
- Investigate divergences between CDS, bonds, equity volatility, ratings and company disclosures instead of averaging them blindly.
- Write the conclusion with a confidence level that reflects quote depth and the number of independent signals.
The bottom line for readers
Read an AI company’s CDS spread as a continuously changing price of contractual credit-event protection. The most useful signal is not a headline number but a consistent combination of contract terms, trend, curve, peer-relative pricing, liquidity and fundamentals. Widening spreads can warn of leverage, capex or refinancing pressure, yet they can also reflect sector-wide risk premia or illiquid trading. Convert spreads into risk-neutral probabilities only with explicit recovery and curve assumptions, and never present those estimates as guaranteed bankruptcy odds.
