Start with the fiscal period, then read the income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement before judging a publisher from its headline revenue or bookings. Separate full-game sales from live services, use each issuer’s own bookings definition, reconcile GAAP with adjusted figures, and test management’s outlook against launches, recurring spending, cash generation and disclosed risks.
1. Identify exactly what you are reading
A publisher usually presents results in two layers. An earnings release is a fast summary with selected financial tables, operating metrics and management commentary. A Form 10-Q (quarterly) or Form 10-K (annual) is the filed report: it contains the complete financial statements, footnotes, Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), accounting policies, legal matters and risk factors.

Record the company and fiscal period
Write down the issuer, whether the period is a quarter or full year, the period-end date and the currency and units (for example, US dollars in millions). A fiscal year may end on a date other than December 31, so “first quarter” does not necessarily mean January through March. Confirm whether the release covers three, six, nine or 12 months.

Use comparable periods
Compare the current quarter with the same fiscal quarter a year earlier. A sequential comparison with the immediately preceding quarter can be distorted by a major launch, a holiday season or a delayed release. After the year-over-year comparison, compare the actual result with the outlook management issued previously and explain any variance.

Check the reporting date against the release slate
Games, expansions and platform launches can move between quarters. A quarter containing a new installment is not automatically evidence of a permanent growth rate, while a quarter before a planned launch may look weak even when management’s full-year plan is unchanged.
2. Read the headline results, then verify them in the statements
Begin with four commonly highlighted figures: net revenue, operating income or loss, net income or loss, and diluted earnings per share (EPS). Treat them as a map to the statements, not as a complete verdict.
| Statement | Question it answers | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Income statement | How did the company perform during the period? | Revenue, cost of revenue, operating expenses, operating income, interest and taxes, net income and diluted EPS. |
| Balance sheet | What did the company own and owe at the period-end date? | Cash and investments, receivables, deferred revenue, inventories, debt, leases, goodwill, other intangible assets and shareholders’ equity. |
| Cash-flow statement | How did cash change during the period? | Cash from operating activities, investing cash flows, financing cash flows and the ending cash balance. |
| Statement of shareholders’ equity | Why did owners’ equity change? | Net income, share issuance or repurchases, dividends, stock-based compensation and other comprehensive income. |
The SEC investor guide summarizes the framework plainly: “There are four main financial statements.” The income statement and cash-flow statement cover activity over a period; the balance sheet is a snapshot at one date. MD&A then explains management’s view of performance, financial condition, earnings and cash flows.
Do not substitute EPS for cash
EPS can rise because of a lower share count, while net income can be helped by non-cash accounting items. Neither tells you whether the business generated cash or has enough liquidity for development commitments, acquisitions and debt payments. Always continue to the cash-flow statement and balance sheet.
3. Separate the revenue streams that a publisher reports
Video-game revenue is not one homogeneous sale. The filing may distinguish full-game sales from continuing or recurring sources such as downloadable content, subscriptions, advertising, licensing and mobile spending. Read the issuer’s labels exactly; two companies can use different groupings.

Full-game revenue
This generally covers a new game sold digitally or physically, and sometimes catalog sales classified as full games. Ask which releases, platforms and regions contributed, whether the comparison includes a prior launch, and whether refunds or returns changed recognized revenue.
Live services and other continuing revenue
Live services can include in-game purchases, extra content, subscriptions, advertising and licensing. These streams are recognized over different periods. A digital item delivered immediately may be recognized sooner than a season pass or online service obligation that is satisfied over time.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteElectronic Arts’ filings separate “full game net revenue” from “live services and other net revenue.” The latter includes extra content, certain licensing revenue, subscriptions and advertising. When a publisher reports a combined total, use the footnotes or segment table to reconstruct the mix rather than assuming all growth came from new releases.
Deferred revenue explains timing differences
Cash can arrive before accounting revenue is recognized. Online-enabled products, subscriptions and unperformed services create deferred revenue on the balance sheet until the company satisfies its performance obligation. A quarter with strong sales can therefore show bookings above revenue, while later recognition can lift revenue after the original sale.
4. Understand “net bookings” before using the number
Bookings is a management-defined operating metric, not a universal accounting line. Find its definition, the reconciliation to GAAP revenue and the period covered. Never compare two publishers’ bookings as if the labels were interchangeable.

| Issuer and period | Definition or components disclosed | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic Arts, fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 | Net bookings is calculated by adding total net revenue to the change in deferred net revenue for online-enabled games. | Reconcile the two figures through deferred revenue; the metric captures sales not yet fully recognized as revenue. |
| Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. | Net bookings is the net amount sold digitally or sold-in physically during the period, including licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, strategy guides and publisher incentives. | Read the company’s specific inclusions before comparing it with another issuer. |
EA’s FY2026 filing reported $8,026 million of net bookings and $7,531 million of net revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The $495 million difference was the change in deferred net revenue for online-enabled games. These are EA-specific results, not an industry benchmark.

Because the companies describe bookings differently, the figures are not directly comparable without adjusting for definition and scope.
Look for the reconciliation, not just the headline
A useful reconciliation shows whether the gap between bookings and revenue came from deferred revenue, refunds, platform arrangements or another item. A growing bookings figure with falling deferred revenue can produce a different revenue pattern from the same bookings growth accompanied by a large increase in deferred revenue.
5. Find the actual growth drivers
After measuring the change, identify what caused it. Read the MD&A, segment notes and release commentary for named franchises, platforms, geographies and services.
- Release contribution: Was a new title launched in the current period but not the prior-year period?
- Catalog performance: Did older games sell more or less than a year earlier?
- Additional content: Did downloadable content, expansions or subscriptions change?
- Recurring spending: Did continuing services offset weaker full-game sales?
- Platform and geography: Did console, PC or mobile mix, or a particular region, drive the move?
- Currency and transactions: Did exchange rates, acquisitions, licensing or a sale of rights affect the comparison?
EA’s three months ended June 30, 2026, illustrate why the mix matters: the filing reported $1,349 million of net bookings, comprising $1,116 million from live services and other net bookings and $233 million from full-game net bookings. The filing attributes changes to named franchises and releases; use those explanations instead of attributing every movement to general player demand.

Do not infer player counts, hours played or engagement from revenue unless the issuer reports a specific, clearly defined metric. Revenue can change because of pricing, content mix, platform fees, exchange rates or recognition timing without a corresponding change in users.
6. Reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP results
GAAP figures are the audited or reviewable accounting results presented under US accounting rules. Management may also publish “adjusted,” “non-GAAP” or similarly labeled measures to remove selected items. The adjusted view can help isolate a recurring operating pattern, but it is supplemental and only as useful as the reconciliation.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Start with GAAP operating income and net income | These are the standard accounting totals used across filings. |
| Read every adjustment | Identify stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangibles, restructuring or reorganization, acquisition-related costs, impairments and other exclusions. |
| Check tax effects and per-share math | An adjustment can affect tax expense and diluted shares, so adjusted EPS is not simply GAAP EPS plus a single pre-tax number. |
| Compare adjustments over time | A “one-time” cost repeated every year may be economically recurring even if management excludes it each period. |
Take-Two’s FY2026 results release presents GAAP figures alongside management adjustments for stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangibles, reorganization and acquisition-related items. Report both views with their labels and explain which items were removed before drawing a conclusion about underlying profitability.
7. Read cash flow and the balance sheet for financial strength
Operating cash flow
Compare cash from operating activities with net income. A sustained gap may reflect working-capital timing, deferred revenue, receivables, capitalized development costs or non-cash charges. One quarter is not enough to establish a trend, but a multi-period gap deserves an explanation in MD&A.
Investing and financing cash flow
Investing cash flow shows acquisitions, purchases or sales of investments and capital expenditures. Financing cash flow captures debt issuance or repayment, share repurchases, stock issuance and dividends. A company can report accounting profit while using cash for a large acquisition or debt repayment.

Liquidity and obligations
Check cash, short-term investments, available credit facilities, debt maturities, lease liabilities and contractual commitments. Compare liquidity with the development budget and any announced acquisition consideration. A large cash balance is less reassuring when substantial obligations mature soon.
Working-capital signals
Receivables indicate amounts billed but not yet collected. Deferred revenue indicates consideration received or billed before the related obligation is fulfilled. Inventories matter more for publishers with physical distribution than for predominantly digital businesses. Read the notes to understand what changed and why.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Test management’s outlook against its assumptions
Guidance is a forecast, not a guarantee. Compare the new outlook with the prior outlook line by line: revenue, bookings, operating income, EPS, operating cash flow, release timing and expected costs.

Questions to ask about guidance
- Which launches are assumed, and has any date moved?
- Does the outlook depend on a particular platform approval, geographic release or content update?
- What engagement or spending assumptions underlie live-service revenue?
- Are development, marketing, restructuring or acquisition costs expected to rise?
- Is the range provided in constant currency or at current exchange rates?
- Did management raise, maintain or cut the previous forecast, and what specific event caused the change?
Use the risk factors and critical accounting estimates to stress-test those assumptions. EA’s FY2026 filing notes that sales are concentrated among popular games and discusses competitive and talent risks. Platform access, dependence on key franchises, delays, cybersecurity, regulation, foreign exchange and the ability to retain development staff can all affect the outlook.
9. A repeatable reading procedure
- Capture the document identity: issuer, Form 10-Q or 10-K (or release), fiscal period, period-end date, currency and units.
- Read the headline table: record net revenue, operating income or loss, net income or loss and diluted EPS for the current and year-ago periods.
- Verify the income statement: trace unusual changes in cost of revenue, research and development, marketing, general and administrative expense, interest and taxes.
- Read the balance sheet: compare cash, investments, receivables, deferred revenue, debt, goodwill and other intangibles with the prior period.
- Read cash flow: reconcile operating cash flow with net income and identify major investing and financing uses.
- Map revenue mix: separate full games, live services, subscriptions, advertising, licensing and mobile where disclosed.
- Locate bookings definitions: copy the issuer’s wording, inspect the reconciliation and record what is included or excluded.
- Identify drivers: tie changes to named titles, franchises, platforms, regions, content updates and release timing.
- Read the GAAP reconciliation: list every adjustment and check whether it recurs.
- Compare guidance: set current guidance beside the previous outlook and document changed assumptions.
- Finish with risks and estimates: read concentration, competition, talent, platform, legal and accounting-estimate disclosures before forming a view.
10. Worked examples from recent filings
| Example | Reported figures | Reading lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic Arts, fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 | $8,026 million net bookings; $7,531 million net revenue; $495 million change in deferred net revenue for online-enabled games. | Bookings exceeded revenue because recognition timing deferred part of the sales value. |
| Electronic Arts, three months ended June 30, 2026 | $1,349 million net bookings: $1,116 million live services and other, $233 million full-game. | The quarter’s total was dominated by continuing services, so a headline bookings comparison alone would hide the mix. |
| Take-Two, fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 | $6.72 billion net bookings; $6.66 billion GAAP net revenue. | Use Take-Two’s own bookings definition and GAAP reconciliation; do not rank the figure against EA’s without definition checks. |
11. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using calendar quarters: replace them with the issuer’s fiscal periods and period-end dates.
- Comparing sequential quarters first: make the same-period year-over-year comparison the starting point, then explain seasonality and launches.
- Treating bookings as revenue: read the definition and deferred-revenue reconciliation.
- Assuming all revenue is game sales: separate full games from services, content, advertising, licensing and subscriptions.
- Accepting adjusted EPS without the bridge: list each excluded item and its tax and share-count effects.
- Ignoring cash: inspect operating cash flow, debt, leases, commitments and liquidity.
- Calling a launch spike a trend: identify the title and compare subsequent periods before concluding that demand is durable.
- Inferring engagement: use only player or engagement metrics the company actually reports and defines.
- Reading guidance as certainty: connect the forecast to launch dates, platform access, spending assumptions and disclosed risks.
12. How to form a balanced conclusion
A sound conclusion answers five separate questions: Did reported performance improve year over year? What product or revenue stream caused the change? Did cash generation and the balance sheet support it? How much of the result depends on deferred recognition or management adjustments? Is the new outlook stronger or weaker after considering launch timing and risks?
Keep the answers issuer-specific and period-specific. A publisher can have rising bookings but falling GAAP profit, strong revenue but weak operating cash flow, or a record launch followed by a lower forecast. The filing’s definitions, reconciliations and explanations determine what the headline actually means.
