How to Read a Japanese Company’s Quarterly Earnings Report

To read a Japanese company’s quarterly earnings report, first obtain the latest filing from the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s TDnet timely-disclosure system. Record its disclosure date, reporting period, accounting basis, and whether the figures are consolidated. Then read the standardized earnings summary, compare the current quarter and year-to-date figures with the same period last year, test progress against the full-year forecast, and use the narrative, segment tables, cash-flow statement, balance sheet, and notes to explain the changes. Treat an English release as a useful guide, not automatically as the complete or authoritative document.

What a Japanese quarterly earnings report is

The document commonly called a kessan tanshin is a timely earnings disclosure rather than one single globally uniform form. Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE)-listed companies submit timely disclosures through TDnet, which publishes them for investors, distributes them to media, and stores them in searchable disclosure services. The public timely-disclosure view normally keeps materials for 31 days; older filings require the listed-company search functions or longer-term database access described by Japan Exchange Group (JPX).

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Report layouts differ according to accounting standards, reporting scope, quarter, and industry. JPX sample forms distinguish Japanese GAAP, IFRS, and U.S. GAAP; consolidated and non-consolidated statements; first- and third-quarter reports; and second-quarter (interim) reports. Banks, insurers, and other specified businesses can use additional forms. The cover page therefore matters as much as the numbers inside it.

Find the authoritative filing and establish its identity

Use TDnet first

Search the company in TDnet and open the filing that matches the relevant disclosure date. Save the Japanese original, any English release, and attached presentation or supplementary materials. Check whether the item is an original filing, a correction, or a supplementary presentation. A corrected filing supersedes the original for the affected information, so do not combine figures from both versions.

Capture the identity block

Write down these fields before reading performance:

  • Company name and securities code.
  • Fiscal year-end and the fiscal year covered.
  • Reporting window, such as “three months ended” or “nine months ended.”
  • Disclosure date and, if shown, the time of release.
  • Document type: quarterly earnings report, interim report, correction, or supplementary material.
  • Statement scope: consolidated group or parent-only (non-consolidated).
  • Accounting basis: Japanese GAAP, IFRS, or U.S. GAAP.

These labels prevent the most common error: comparing a nine-month cumulative figure with a three-month quarter, or a consolidated group with the parent company alone.

Understand the period and the two kinds of columns

Quarterly forms usually show both a period result and a cumulative result. A first-quarter report may place three months in the current-period column and three months in the year-to-date column. A third-quarter report commonly shows three months for the quarter and nine months cumulatively. The second-quarter filing is an interim report and commonly presents six months cumulatively, with a separate second-quarter period where the form supplies one.

Column or label What it tells you Safe comparison
Current quarter Results for only the latest three-month period when a quarterly column is provided. Compare with the same three months of the prior fiscal year.
Cumulative year to date Total from the fiscal-year start through the reported quarter (three, six, or nine months). Compare with the same cumulative period last year and with the full-year plan.
Full-year forecast Management’s plan for the entire fiscal year, often shown beside the actual result. Calculate progress using the same metric and units.

Keep the company’s stated units—yen, thousands of yen, millions of yen, or another unit—and its rounding. A displayed figure of 1,234 million yen is not interchangeable with 1,234 yen. If the fiscal year starts in a month other than April, interpret “first quarter” by the company’s fiscal calendar, not by the calendar year.

Check accounting basis and reporting scope before comparing numbers

Consolidated versus non-consolidated

Consolidated statements include the parent and its consolidated subsidiaries, subject to the company’s consolidation rules. Non-consolidated statements describe the parent company alone. Revenue, debt, cash, employees, and segment performance can differ dramatically between the two. Use one scope consistently across periods and companies. A parent-only profit increase does not establish that the group as a whole improved.

Japanese GAAP, IFRS, and U.S. GAAP

Accounting basis affects revenue recognition, operating-profit presentation, treatment of extraordinary or unusual items, segment measures, and balance-sheet comparability. Japanese GAAP reports commonly show “ordinary profit,” while IFRS or U.S. GAAP forms may use a different presentation and may not provide that line. Never create an ordinary-profit comparison when the line is not presented.

If a company changes accounting standards, consolidation scope, or a material accounting policy, identify the break in the series. Explain the effect before calling the change growth or deterioration. Restated prior-year figures, if supplied, are preferable to mixing unrecast numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the standardized earnings summary

The summary table is the fastest way to establish what happened. Extract the current period, the same prior-year period, the cumulative year-to-date result, and the full-year forecast. For each available column, record:

  • Revenue or net sales.
  • Operating profit.
  • Ordinary profit, when the form presents it.
  • Profit attributable to owners of the parent.
  • Basic or diluted earnings per share (EPS), as reported.
  • Full-year forecast for the same measures.

Compute year-over-year change only between like periods. A useful calculation is (current result − prior-year result) ÷ prior-year result × 100. For forecast progress, use cumulative actual ÷ full-year forecast × 100, preserving the company’s sign and units. A percentage can mislead when the prior-year denominator is near zero or negative; show the underlying amounts and explain the base effect instead of relying on the percentage.

Read profit in a waterfall, not as one headline

Revenue shows the scale of activity, but operating profit indicates the result after operating costs. Ordinary profit, where shown, adds non-operating items under the company’s accounting presentation. Profit attributable to owners of the parent is the amount belonging to parent shareholders after effects such as non-controlling interests. EPS translates that profit into a per-share figure and can move because of share-count changes as well as profit.

Metric Question to ask
Revenue Did volume, pricing, product mix, currency, acquisitions, or divestitures change sales?
Operating profit Did gross margin, operating expenses, input costs, or one-off operating items drive the change?
Ordinary profit Did non-operating income or expense change the result, and is the line actually presented?
Profit attributable to owners Did taxes, non-controlling interests, impairments, or other below-operating items affect owners’ earnings?
EPS Did earnings per share follow profit, or did buybacks, issuance, or other share-count changes alter it?

Use qualitative information to explain the movement

After the summary, read the qualitative-information section. It should connect the result to operating causes rather than merely restating the table. Look for explicit discussion of:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Price and volume changes, including whether price increases offset lower demand.
  • Product or regional mix and changes in customer composition.
  • Foreign-exchange effects and the exchange-rate assumptions used.
  • Raw-material, energy, logistics, labor, and other input costs.
  • Restructuring, acquisition, disposal, impairment, litigation, disaster, or other one-off items.
  • Seasonality and the timing of shipments, projects, or promotional spending.

Match each explanation to the line it should affect. For example, a currency benefit may lift revenue and operating profit but not indicate stronger local demand. A restructuring charge may depress current profit while reducing future costs. If management gives no quantified bridge, label the explanation as qualitative rather than implying a precise contribution.

Read segment information and eliminations

Segment tables show where group-level growth originates. Compare segment revenue and segment profit with the same prior-year period, then check the reconciliation to consolidated totals. Inter-segment sales and central costs can appear as eliminations or adjustments, so segment totals may not add directly to the consolidated headline without that reconciliation.

Questions for each segment

  • Is revenue growth broad-based or concentrated in one segment?
  • Did profit grow faster or slower than revenue, implying a margin change?
  • Are losses coming from a new business, an investment phase, or a deteriorating established operation?
  • Does management identify volume, price, currency, or cost causes for the segment change?
  • Were segment definitions, organizational structures, or allocation rules changed?

A group profit increase without support from operating segments, cash flow, or recurring demand deserves additional scrutiny. Conversely, a weak group quarter may conceal strong continuing businesses if a disclosed one-off item is isolated and non-recurring.

Test earnings quality with cash flow and the balance sheet

Cash-flow statement

Read operating, investing, and financing cash flow together. Operating cash flow indicates how much reported activity converted into cash. Investing cash flow shows capital expenditure, acquisitions, asset sales, and investments. Financing cash flow shows borrowing, repayment, dividends, and share transactions.

Investigate a gap between profit and operating cash flow by checking receivables, contract assets, inventories, payables, provisions, and other working-capital movements. A seasonal build in inventory may be normal; an unexplained rise in receivables can signal delayed collection or aggressive sales timing. Large investing outflows may represent productive capacity or an acquisition rather than a deterioration in operations.

Balance sheet

Compare cash, interest-bearing debt, inventories, trade receivables, provisions, and equity with the previous year-end and the prior reporting date where available. Check whether leverage rose, whether liquidity remains adequate for stated plans, and whether acquisitions or disposals changed the perimeter. Reconcile unusual movements to the notes and accounting-policy disclosures.

One-off gains and charges

Separate recurring operating performance from gains on asset sales, impairment reversals, restructuring charges, disaster losses, litigation, or other non-recurring items. Do not automatically remove an item from your analysis: explain its size, location in the income statement, cash effect, and whether management expects it to recur.

Evaluate the full-year forecast and forward risks

Compare cumulative actual results with the company’s full-year forecast, but do not assume that a high percentage of the plan means an automatic beat. Seasonality may concentrate profit in the fourth quarter or in an earlier period. Read management’s stated assumptions about demand, exchange rates, input costs, production, and project timing.

Check whether the filing revises revenue, profit, EPS, dividends, or buyback plans. A forecast left unchanged is not proof that expectations are unchanged; the narrative may describe offsetting risks. Look for disclosures concerning impairment, litigation, natural disaster, currency volatility, supply-chain disruption, financing, or regulatory developments. Forecasts are management assumptions, not guarantees, and the report’s cautionary language controls how they should be interpreted.

Use XBRL and HTML without losing context

JPX provides XBRL data on TDnet for earnings reports and related disclosures. JPX also provides HTML data for earnings-report pages that include a quarterly accounting period beginning on or after April 1, 2024. These formats are useful for extracting repeated facts, building a comparison sheet, and checking that copied numbers match the displayed tables.

Statutory disclosure XBRL can also be downloaded through EDINET, while earnings-report data is available through JPX disclosure services. The systems are related but not interchangeable: use the source that corresponds to the filing you are analyzing and verify the reporting period, unit, scope, and accounting basis in the rendered document.

A practical extraction routine

  1. Download the HTML or XBRL package and the human-readable report.
  2. Filter facts by fiscal period and consolidated or non-consolidated context.
  3. Confirm the unit and scaling, such as yen, thousands, or millions.
  4. Map each fact to the company’s displayed label; do not assume a similarly named tag has identical meaning.
  5. Reconcile extracted revenue, profit, EPS, and forecast figures to the summary table.
  6. Read the narrative and notes before using the extracted values in a model.

Machine-readable data improves accuracy but cannot decide whether a gain is recurring, whether a segment definition changed, or which management assumption explains a variance.

How much can you trust the English version?

JPX’s English Company Announcements Service publishes English full texts or excerpts and summaries supplied through TDnet. From April 2025, domestic companies listed on the Prime Market must disclose financial results and timely-disclosure information simultaneously in Japanese and English, although an English excerpt or summary is acceptable. Companies outside that requirement may publish English material on a different schedule or with less detail.

JPX’s financial-results FAQ states: “English disclosure of financial results must be made via TDnet in order to provide timely information to overseas investors.” The same guidance explains that an English version is a reference translation and need not receive the same audit or review treatment as the Japanese original. English publication can also occur later than the Japanese release.

When to consult the Japanese original

  • A number, unit, sign, or decimal appears inconsistent.
  • A footnote changes the interpretation of a forecast or accounting policy.
  • The English text says “summary” or omits a table present in Japanese.
  • You are assessing segment definitions, non-controlling interests, or unusual items.
  • A correction or revised forecast may have been issued.

Use the English document to orient yourself, then verify material numbers and qualifications against the Japanese filing, XBRL facts, or the original tables. Do not treat a smooth translation as evidence that every caveat has been carried over.

A repeatable 15-minute-to-deep-review workflow

  1. Locate and date the filing. Open the TDnet item, record the disclosure date, and check for corrections.
  2. Identify the perimeter. Mark fiscal year, quarter or cumulative window, consolidated status, accounting basis, and units.
  3. Capture the summary. Copy revenue, operating profit, ordinary profit when shown, profit attributable to owners, EPS, and full-year forecast.
  4. Make like-for-like comparisons. Compare the same quarter and the same year-to-date period with the prior year.
  5. Calculate progress. Divide cumulative actual by the full-year plan, then test the result against seasonality.
  6. Read management’s explanation. Identify price, volume, mix, currency, cost, one-off, restructuring, and acquisition drivers.
  7. Drill into segments. Compare segment revenue and profit, then reconcile eliminations and central items.
  8. Check cash and the balance sheet. Trace operating cash flow, working capital, debt, cash, inventory, receivables, provisions, and capital expenditure.
  9. Review changes and risks. Look for revised forecasts, dividends, buybacks, impairments, litigation, disasters, currency, and supply-chain disclosures.
  10. Verify critical facts. Cross-check extracted data and English translations against the Japanese tables and notes.

Comparing two Japanese companies or two reports

Comparison axis What must match Why it matters
Accounting basis Japanese GAAP, IFRS, or U.S. GAAP Recognition and presentation differences can make margins and profit lines non-comparable.
Scope Consolidated group or parent-only Subsidiaries, debt, cash, and non-controlling interests change the economic perimeter.
Time window Three-month quarter or cumulative three-, six-, or nine-month period Different windows create false growth or forecast-progress conclusions.
Operating performance Revenue growth, operating margin, segment mix, and forecast progress Shows whether growth is profitable and distributed across the business.
Cash and balance-sheet quality Operating cash conversion, working capital, leverage, and one-off items Tests whether accounting profit is supported by liquidity and recurring operations.
Disclosure quality Completeness and timing of Japanese and English materials Missing or delayed detail increases the risk of misreading a result.

Operating margin is operating profit ÷ revenue × 100. Compare margins only after confirming identical scope, basis, period, and treatment of unusual items. If any axis differs, state the difference instead of forcing a ranking.

Common reading mistakes and their fixes

  • Mixing quarterly and cumulative columns: label every copied number with its period before calculating growth.
  • Comparing consolidated with parent-only figures: use the same statement scope or explain why a comparison is limited.
  • Treating ordinary profit as universal: use it only where the report presents that line and accounting basis.
  • Ignoring units and rounding: carry the displayed unit into every spreadsheet column and chart.
  • Calling forecast progress a beat: adjust for seasonality and read the assumptions behind the plan.
  • Accepting a translation as complete: verify important figures, footnotes, and qualifications in Japanese or machine-readable data.
  • Focusing only on revenue and net income: inspect segments, cash flow, working capital, debt, and one-off items.
  • Using an outdated filing: check TDnet for a correction or revised forecast after the initial release.

What a sound conclusion should contain

A useful earnings note states the exact period and scope, gives like-for-like revenue and profit changes, identifies the operational drivers, tests cash conversion and balance-sheet movement, and compares cumulative performance with the company’s own full-year plan. It also identifies accounting or translation limits and separates recurring performance from one-off effects. That structure lets a reader understand not only whether profit rose, but why it rose, how much cash it produced, and what would have to happen for the forecast to be achieved.
