How to Read a Cement Company’s Quarterly Results and Balance Sheet

The reliable way to read a cement producer’s quarterly release is to connect three stories: how much cement and clinker it sold, how profit was generated, and whether that profit turned into cash while the balance sheet remained able to fund debt service and investment. Revenue, EBITDA, net profit, cash, or debt viewed alone can give a misleading answer.

Read the quarterly accounts, notes, management discussion and analysis, and investor presentation as one set. Issuers publish these materials in different combinations: Dangote Cement’s archive, for example, includes quarterly accounts and presentations, while Siam City Cement lists financial statements and management discussion and analysis separately. The sequence below gives you a repeatable way to move from document scope to operating performance, cash conversion, financial resilience, and finally a fair comparison with another quarter or company.

Start by defining exactly what the quarter covers

Before calculating a growth rate, write down five labels from the cover page and notes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Period: Is it the three-month quarter, a year-to-date period, or a full financial year?
  • Entity: Does the statement cover the parent alone or the consolidated group, including subsidiaries?
  • Currency and units: Are amounts shown in naira, baht, euros, another currency, millions, or billions?
  • Comparison basis: Are comparative figures from the prior year, the immediately preceding quarter, or a restated period?
  • Accounting basis: Has the company changed an accounting policy, acquired or sold a business, or changed the presentation of a segment?

Read the notes for acquisitions, disposals, impairments, foreign-exchange effects, and accounting changes before drawing a trend line. A quarter can appear to grow simply because an acquired subsidiary is included, or appear to decline because a business was sold or a prior period was restated. A currency translation can also change reported revenue and debt without changing local-currency operations.

Build the operating story before looking for a verdict

Cement is a volume-and-price business with large fixed costs. The first question is therefore not “Did revenue rise?” but “What happened to tonnes, realization, and the mix of products and markets?”

Separate cement and clinker volumes

Find the company’s disclosed cement sales volume and clinker sales volume, and check the scope of each number. Some issuers report cement alone; others combine cement and clinker or use another defined measure. Note whether the figure is domestic, export, regional, or group-wide.

Volume growth generally means more tonnes were sold, while revenue growth can also come from higher selling prices or a different product mix. If revenue rises 8% while cement volume rises 2%, the remaining change may reflect price, mix, currency, or consolidation. Do not label it “volume growth” unless the volume line supports that conclusion.

Check production, capacity and utilization

Production shows how much the plants made; sales show how much product moved to customers. A production increase that is not matched by sales can increase inventory instead of cash. Conversely, sales can rise while production is flat if the company draws down finished-goods inventory or buys clinker.

Utilization is useful context for fixed-cost absorption, but it is not a universal percentage. Cementos Pacasmayo defines its utilization rate as production for the specified period divided by installed capacity for that period. Use that formula only after confirming the issuer’s own numerator, capacity denominator, period, and whether the measure covers cement, clinker, or a particular plant group.

Look for geographic and product mix changes

A multi-country cement group can have one region growing while another contracts. Read the segment table and management discussion for local demand, exports, infrastructure activity, and pricing by market where disclosed. Product mix also matters: blended cement, ordinary cement, clinker, ready-mix, and other products can carry different prices and costs. A group-level average can conceal a weak high-margin market offset by a strong low-margin market.

Trace sales through the income statement

Once the operating facts are clear, follow the income statement in order rather than jumping to the final profit number.

Revenue

Compare current revenue with the same quarter a year earlier and, where seasonality permits, with the preceding quarter. Reconcile the change to disclosed volumes, selling prices, product mix, geography, currency, and consolidation changes. If the issuer gives constant-currency information, keep reported and constant-currency movements separate.

Gross profit and operating profit

Gross profit reflects revenue after the costs assigned to production and sales. Operating profit goes further by including operating expenses. Calculate the margin for each: gross profit divided by revenue, and operating profit divided by revenue. A higher operating margin can result from stronger pricing, lower fuel or energy costs, improved plant utilization, lower freight, a favorable product mix, or a nonrecurring item. Use the management discussion and cost notes to identify which explanation is supported.

Finance costs, tax and net profit

After operating profit, inspect finance costs, foreign-exchange gains or losses, tax, non-controlling interests, and other material items. A company can report better operating performance but lower net profit because interest expense, currency losses, or tax increased. Conversely, a one-time tax benefit can lift net profit without improving the cement business.

Use EBITDA only with its reconciliation

EBITDA can help describe operating performance before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, but it is not a standardized IFRS subtotal. Read the issuer’s definition and reconciliation to operating profit or profit. Cementos Pacasmayo’s SEC filing states: “EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA should not be construed as alternatives to profit or operating profit, as indicators of operating performance, as alternatives to cash flow provided by operating activities or as measures of liquidity (in each case, as determined in accordance with IFRS).” That is the company’s filed caution, not a universal accounting definition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjusted EBITDA may exclude items that another company leaves in its result. Before comparing two producers, list every adjustment, including restructuring, impairment, gains on disposals, fair-value movements, and other company-specific items. Never use an EBITDA headline as a substitute for operating cash flow or as proof that debt is safe.

Relate margins to cement economics

Cement plants have substantial fixed costs, so changes in utilization and tonnes can affect unit economics. Where the issuer reports cost per tonne or EBITDA per tonne, compare the measure over time and read its definition before using it.

Energy and fuel

Energy and fuel can materially affect production cost. Look for the issuer’s discussion of fuel prices, electricity, alternative fuels, hedging, and the timing of pass-through to customers. Do not attribute a margin change to energy unless the report provides supporting data or commentary.

Freight, distribution and raw materials

Freight and distribution costs vary with transport distance, fuel, exports, and the location of plants and customers. Raw-material costs and quarry access also differ by site. A shift toward distant export markets can raise logistics cost even when tonnes increase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and plant utilization

Planned shutdowns and maintenance can reduce production in one quarter and increase costs, while a later quarter may benefit from restored capacity. Compare the timing of outages and the utilization denominator. A higher utilization percentage is not automatically comparable across companies if one uses nameplate capacity and another uses an adjusted or period-specific capacity figure.

Test whether the margin improvement is durable

Classify each major margin driver as operating, market-related, currency-related, or nonrecurring. A price increase supported by sustained demand is different from a temporary spike. A currency benefit can reverse. A disposal gain should not be treated as recurring cement profitability. The report’s notes and management discussion should support the classification; otherwise present it as uncertain rather than fact.

Check whether earnings became cash

Cash-flow quality is the bridge between the income statement and the balance sheet. Start with cash flow from operating activities and compare it with net profit for the same period or year-to-date basis.

Read operating cash flow and working capital together

Inspect changes in receivables, inventories, payables, taxes, and other working-capital accounts. Rising receivables can mean customers have not yet paid for reported sales. Higher inventory can reflect preparation for stronger demand, a production imbalance, or weak sell-through. A decline in payables can consume cash even when profit is unchanged. Tax payments may also be timed differently from the tax expense recognized in profit.

A profitable quarter can therefore consume cash if working capital expands. Conversely, operating cash flow can look unusually strong when receivables are collected, inventory is reduced, or suppliers are paid later. Ambuja’s financial-capital discussion illustrates why operating cash, working capital, and capital expenditure should be considered together rather than as isolated lines.

Separate operating cash from investing cash

After operating cash flow, review capital expenditure and other investing cash flows. Distinguish maintenance spending needed to keep existing plants running from expansion spending for new capacity when the issuer provides that split. Acquisitions, asset disposals, and investments can make total investing cash flow volatile without changing recurring plant economics.

Use a simple cash-conversion check

  1. Record net profit for the same reporting basis as the cash-flow statement.
  2. Record cash flow from operating activities.
  3. Explain the largest difference using working-capital movements, noncash charges, taxes, and other disclosed items.
  4. Subtract capital expenditure to see how much cash remains before financing flows, while labeling the result as your analytical calculation rather than an issuer-defined metric.
  5. Check whether dividends, debt repayment, borrowings, or share issuance supplied the remaining cash.

Read the balance sheet for resilience

The balance sheet answers whether the company can meet near-term obligations and fund its operating and investment plans. Read it alongside the cash-flow statement and debt notes.

Cash and liquidity

Identify cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash if disclosed, and available committed facilities. Check where the cash sits geographically and whether restrictions or trapped cash could limit its use. A large cash balance is less reassuring if substantial amounts are restricted or held in a market with transfer constraints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Borrowings and lease liabilities

List short-term and long-term borrowings, lease liabilities, and the maturity schedule. Note interest rates, fixed versus floating exposure, secured debt, currency, and covenant requirements where disclosed. Debt due within the next year matters more to liquidity than the same amount due several years later, although both affect leverage.

Net debt and liquidity ratios

Net debt is commonly calculated as borrowings minus cash, but confirm the issuer’s definition and which liabilities it includes. Cementir’s report, for example, presents liquidity, cash-flow-to-debt, and net financial position indicators. Ratios are useful only when you know the numerator, denominator, period, and whether lease liabilities or restricted cash are included.

Do not infer that debt is safe from a net-debt ratio alone. Consider cash availability, maturities, interest expense, operating cash flow, refinancing access, and planned capital expenditure together.

Equity and non-controlling interests

Review total equity, retained earnings, other comprehensive income, and non-controlling interests. Foreign-currency translation can move equity without a cash transaction. Acquisitions, impairments, dividends, and share transactions can also change equity while operating performance is stable. A declining equity balance deserves an explanation in the notes, especially if impairments or losses are involved.

Compare quarters and companies without creating false precision

Begin with the same issuer’s prior-year quarter and its trailing trend. Then compare peers only after aligning the following dimensions:

  • Reporting period and seasonality.
  • Currency and units, including whether values are reported or constant-currency.
  • Parent-only versus consolidated scope.
  • Geographic and product segments.
  • Accounting policies and restatements.
  • Definitions of volume, utilization, EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA, net debt, and cash flow.
  • One-off items, acquisitions, disposals, impairments, and foreign-exchange effects.

The most useful comparison is not a single ranking. It is a bridge showing what changed in volume and utilization, revenue realization and mix, operating cost and margin, operating cash and working capital, capital expenditure and capacity additions, then cash, debt, liquidity, and financing costs.

Comparison axis What to collect Question it answers Required caveat
Volume and utilization Cement and clinker sales, production, installed capacity, utilization Did more tonnes move, and were plants used more intensively? Confirm product scope and the issuer’s utilization formula.
Revenue realization and mix Revenue, selling-price commentary, product and geographic mix Did growth come from tonnes, price, mix, currency, or consolidation? Group averages can hide divergent regional results.
Operating cost and margin Gross profit, operating profit, EBITDA or EBITDA per tonne where disclosed Did unit economics improve? Reconcile issuer-defined EBITDA and adjustments.
Cash generation Operating cash flow, net profit, receivables, inventory, payables, taxes Did accounting earnings turn into cash? Use the same period and explain working-capital timing.
Investment Capital expenditure, acquisitions, disposals, capacity additions Is the company maintaining or expanding its asset base? Separate maintenance and expansion spending when disclosed.
Financial resilience Cash, borrowings, lease liabilities, maturities, interest expense, liquidity indicators Can the company fund operations and debt service? Check definitions, restricted cash, currency and refinancing dates.

A practical worksheet for one quarterly release

Use a single page or spreadsheet with one column for the current period, one for the comparable period, and one for your explanation. Enter figures exactly as reported before calculating percentages.

  1. Scope: Record period, entity, currency, units, restatements, acquisitions, disposals and impairments.
  2. Operations: Enter cement volume, clinker volume, production, capacity, utilization, segment results and product mix.
  3. Income statement: Enter revenue, gross profit, operating profit, finance costs, tax, non-controlling interests and net profit.
  4. Definitions: Copy the issuer’s EBITDA and adjusted-EBITDA reconciliation, plus definitions for utilization, net debt and any per-tonne metric.
  5. Cash flow: Enter operating cash flow, working-capital movements, capital expenditure, acquisitions, disposals, dividends and financing flows.
  6. Balance sheet: Enter cash, borrowings, lease liabilities, current liabilities, maturities, equity and available liquidity.
  7. Conclusion: Write three separate sentences: what happened operationally, what happened to cash, and whether liquidity and debt capacity changed.

Keeping those three conclusions separate prevents a strong operating quarter from being mistaken for stronger liquidity, or a temporary cash release from being mistaken for recurring profitability.

Illustrative company figures: use them as reported, not as benchmarks

Company investor pages sometimes summarize annual figures alongside quarterly materials. Dangote Cement’s investor page currently summarizes FY 2025 revenue of ₦4,306,704B, EBITDA of ₦1,981,349B, and total capacity of 55.0MTA. Those are company-reported figures for that company and period, not an industry benchmark. To analyze them, you would still need the underlying statements, the company’s EBITDA reconciliation, currency and consolidation scope, and the cash-flow and debt disclosures.

Common interpretation mistakes and how to correct them

  • Revenue growth equals volume growth: Check tonnes, selling-price commentary and mix before assigning the cause.
  • EBITDA growth proves better cash generation: Compare operating cash flow with net profit and explain working-capital changes.
  • All EBITDA figures are comparable: Reconcile definitions and adjustments before ranking companies.
  • Utilization percentages are interchangeable: Verify production scope, installed-capacity basis and period.
  • A headline ratio is the whole balance-sheet analysis: Read cash availability, maturities, interest expense, operating cash flow and planned capital expenditure together.
  • One quarter represents the trend: Use the prior-year period and a trailing sequence, while accounting for seasonality.
  • A reported group number describes every market: Read regional and product disclosures for divergent outcomes.
  • A company statistic is an industry norm: Keep issuer-specific figures labeled as issuer-specific unless an independent sector benchmark is available.

The decision framework

After completing the worksheet, classify the quarter on each of three dimensions rather than assigning one broad “good” or “bad” label:

Operating direction

Improving operating direction requires evidence from volume, utilization, price or mix, and operating margin. State which factor changed and whether it appears recurring or temporary.

Earnings quality

Higher-quality earnings are supported by operating cash flow and explainable working-capital movements. If net profit rose while receivables or inventory absorbed cash, record that qualification explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Financial capacity

Financial capacity depends on cash, debt maturities, financing costs, liquidity facilities, operating cash flow, and capital expenditure plans. A company can have improving margins but less room to invest if expansion spending and near-term maturities rise faster than cash generation.

This three-part conclusion answers the reader’s real question: whether the cement business improved, whether the improvement produced cash, and whether the balance sheet can support the next period’s obligations and investment.
