Read a coastal archaeological bathymetric map in this order: identify its source, date, coverage, scale or resolution, legend and units; find the vertical datum; read numbered soundings and contour intervals; describe the seabed relief from contour shape and spacing; then test any suspected feature against survey coverage and uncertainty. The map can show underwater terrain and anomalies that deserve archaeological investigation, but an unusual contour is not, by itself, proof of a wreck, structure, age or cultural affiliation.
What a bathymetric map shows
Bathymetry is the measurement and depiction of underwater terrain. It is the aquatic equivalent of topography on land. A bathymetric map may use a color gradient, depth contours, individual depth soundings, or a combination of all three to show the size, shape and distribution of seabed features.

On a nautical chart, a sounding is a number representing a water-depth measurement. An isobath, often called a depth contour, connects locations with the same reported depth. Closely spaced contours indicate a rapid change in depth; widely spaced contours indicate a gentler slope. Colors usually reinforce the same pattern, but their meaning is controlled by the map’s own legend.
Do not assume that blue always means one particular depth, that every chart uses meters, or that a contour interval is the same from one map to another. NOAA’s U.S. Chart No. 1 is a reference for the numbers and symbols used on United States paper and electronic nautical charts. It helps decode chart conventions; it does not determine whether a feature is archaeological.

Start with the map’s identity and legend
Before interpreting a line or number, record what the map actually is. A screenshot stripped from its title block can hide the information needed to judge a feature.
Check the source and survey date
Look for the agency, university, contractor, vessel, project or database that created the map, along with the acquisition and publication dates. A modern multibeam survey and an older reconnaissance chart may cover the same coast but resolve very different levels of detail. A date also matters because seabeds can change through storms, dredging, sediment movement, construction or erosion.
Confirm geographic coverage
Read the latitude and longitude grid, place names, coordinate reference information and map boundaries. Note whether the image includes the entire suspected site, only a search corridor, or a cropped view around one anomaly. A feature cannot be declared absent from an area that was outside the survey swath or hidden by a crop.
Read scale, pixel size and resolution
Scale describes the relationship between map distance and real distance. Digital products may instead emphasize grid spacing, cell size, sounding density or a stated resolution. These are not interchangeable. A map can contain many pixels created by interpolation without having equally detailed measurements everywhere. Record the stated resolution and how measurements were distributed, rather than inferring precision from a smooth-looking image.
Use the legend before using colors or symbols
The legend should identify:
- the depth unit, such as meters or feet;
- the color ramp and the depth ranges assigned to each color;
- the contour interval and any index contours;
- symbols for rocks, wrecks, obstructions, aids to navigation, survey limits or uncertainty;
- the vertical datum or reference surface; and
- the horizontal coordinate system or grid, when supplied.
If any of these are missing or illegible, label your interpretation as limited. Obtain the originating survey documentation instead of guessing from familiar chart conventions.
Understand units and the vertical datum
A depth number has meaning only in relation to its units and reference level. Two maps can assign different numerical depths to the same seabed because they use different vertical datums, water-level treatments, survey dates or processing methods.

Units are not optional details
A value of “5” could mean five meters, five feet or another unit defined by the legend. Convert values only after confirming the original unit, and keep the original value in your notes. Rounding during conversion can make neighboring soundings appear equal when the source distinguishes them.

Find the vertical reference surface
A vertical datum is the reference level to which charted depths are related. Hydrographic workflows adjust raw soundings to a standard or absolute water level using tide predictions and later tide observations. Other datasets may reference an ellipsoid or a different modeled surface. The map should state the datum, chart datum, tidal reference, ellipsoid or geodetic model used.
Never compare a depth from one map with a depth from another until their datums and units are aligned. A numerical difference does not automatically represent seabed change. It may reflect a different reference surface or water-level correction.
Separate depth from water level at the time of observation
A sounding is processed so that changing tide or water level does not make the chart unusable. The datum is therefore not necessarily the sea surface observed when a vessel collected a particular point. Read the survey’s explanation of tide predictions, tide observations and any zone corrections before drawing conclusions about small depth differences.
Read soundings, contours and color together
Soundings: the numbered measurements
Start with the numbers closest to the feature you are studying. Check whether the chart distinguishes measured soundings from reported, estimated or interpolated values. Compare several neighboring numbers rather than relying on one isolated value. A single unusually shallow or deep sounding may be a genuine object, a data-quality issue, or a value presented at a different precision.
Write down the units and datum alongside every value you quote. A statement such as “the feature is 8 deep” is incomplete; “the chart reports 8 meters relative to its stated chart datum” is interpretable.

Contours: lines of equal depth
Read the contour labels and determine the interval between successive lines. If contours are drawn every two meters, a line labeled 10 and the next line labeled 12 enclose a band whose depths lie between those values, subject to the map’s interpolation and uncertainty. Do not treat an unlabeled line as a precise measurement unless the legend or index-contour pattern establishes its value.
Color bands: a visual overview
Color makes broad relief easy to see, especially in a digital elevation model. It is not a substitute for the legend or soundings. Adjacent colors may represent a narrow depth change on one map and a broad range on another. Some maps reverse the usual light-to-dark convention or use a diverging palette to emphasize a chosen depth.
Contour spacing and shape
Use spacing to describe relief:
- Closely packed lines: a steep slope or abrupt step in the seabed.
- Widely spaced lines: a gentle slope or relatively flat area.
- Elongated, parallel lines: a ridge, bank, channel edge or slope trend.
- V-shaped bends: a possible channel, gully or valley; the direction of the point must be interpreted in relation to whether depth increases or decreases.
- Closed contours: a local high or low. The labels and color ramp determine which one.
- Broken, noisy or irregular lines: potentially complex relief, sparse coverage, interpolation artifacts or processing effects.
Describe what the map depicts before assigning a cause. “A closed set of contours encloses a local shoal” is an observation. “A buried building” is an interpretation that needs evidence beyond bathymetry.

Judge survey quality before trusting a feature
NOAA mapping guidance treats resolution and depth uncertainty as explicit specifications. Those specifications are properties of a particular survey, not universal guarantees for every bathymetric map.
Metadata to locate
- Acquisition method: identify whether the source describes multibeam, single-beam, lidar, lead-line, satellite-derived or another method.
- Coverage and gaps: determine where measurements were collected and whether there are unsurveyed lanes, shadows, masked cells or interpolation.
- Horizontal and vertical uncertainty: note the stated error or uncertainty and the conditions under which it was calculated.
- Resolution or sounding density: compare the feature’s size with the survey’s spatial detail.
- Datum and tide processing: record the chart datum or ellipsoid, tide predictions and observations, and any zone corrections.
- Processing and gridding: find out whether the map is a point cloud, a gridded surface, a smoothed display or a derivative such as shaded relief.
Match feature size to resolution
A feature represented by only one or two grid cells is difficult to characterize. It may indicate a real object, but its exact dimensions and position are less certain than those of a broad form crossed by many soundings. A smooth surface can conceal small discontinuities, while an aggressively enhanced shaded-relief display can make minor noise look dramatic.
Do not infer absence from a blank area
A blank region may mean no data, a display mask, a navigation restriction, an interpolation gap or a depth range outside the chosen color scale. Check the coverage layer and metadata before saying that a site or object is not present.

Apply bathymetry to archaeological questions
High-resolution bathymetric maps are useful for finding and exploring geological, archaeological and biological features in the ocean. Hydrographic work can also search for and map seabed objects such as shipwrecks, supporting maritime-heritage research and preservation.

- the measured or modeled shape of the seabed;
- the location, size and orientation of a mapped relief feature, within stated uncertainty;
- relationships among ridges, channels, depressions, scarps and sediment surfaces; and
- which areas were covered by the survey at the documented resolution.
What it cannot establish by itself
- that an anomaly was made by people;
- that it is a particular shipwreck, wall, pier, aircraft or artifact;
- the feature’s age, cultural affiliation, ownership or legal status; or
- that an apparently smooth area is free of buried or sub-resolution material.
A contour anomaly is evidence of seabed shape in the dataset. Archaeological identification requires corroborating evidence and an appropriate assessment, which may include other geophysical data, historical records, imagery, diver or remotely operated vehicle inspection, or controlled archaeological investigation. The required evidence and permissions depend on the site and jurisdiction.
Use careful archaeological language
Prefer “bathymetric anomaly,” “seabed mound,” “linear depression” or “possible anthropogenic feature” when the map alone is the evidence. Reserve terms such as “wreck” or “structure” for cases supported by additional documentation. Do not assign a date, cultural group or legal protection without a source specific to that site and jurisdiction.
Compare two maps of the same coast
When maps disagree, use a fixed comparison rather than choosing the one with the more dramatic colors.
| Comparison item | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Units and vertical datum | Are both maps in the same unit and tied to the same reference surface? | Different datums can produce different numbers without a changed seabed. |
| Survey date | When was each survey collected and published? | Storms, dredging, sediment movement and construction can alter relief. |
| Source and acquisition method | Who made it, and what measurement method is documented? | Methods differ in coverage, resolution and uncertainty. |
| Coverage | Does each map include the same area, and are there gaps or masked cells? | A feature may appear absent simply because it was not surveyed or displayed. |
| Resolution and sounding density | What grid spacing, resolution or point density is stated? | Small features cannot be judged reliably below the survey’s effective detail. |
| Uncertainty | Are horizontal and vertical uncertainties reported? | Differences smaller than the stated uncertainty may not be meaningful. |
| Contour interval and processing | Are contours derived at the same interval and from comparable gridding or smoothing? | Processing can change the apparent sharpness and visibility of relief. |
| Purpose and suitability | Was the dataset made for navigation, reconnaissance, habitat mapping or archaeological investigation? | A product optimized for one question may not resolve another. |
If the maps use different datums or dates, report the difference as a qualified comparison rather than claiming that one survey disproves the other. If a field is not reported, write “not stated” and seek the source metadata.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical reading workflow
- Save the original map and metadata. Keep the title block, legend, source notes and any downloadable survey description with your working copy.
- Mark the coordinate system and extent. Record the map bounds and confirm that the suspected site lies inside the measured coverage.
- Transcribe the units and datum. Write them at the top of your notes before recording depths.
- Determine the contour interval. Use labeled contours and the legend; do not infer it from line appearance alone.
- Read nearby soundings. Compare several measurements around the feature and distinguish measured points from interpolated or estimated display values when the source allows.
- Describe the relief neutrally. State whether the pattern is a mound, depression, ridge, channel, scarp or flat area, including orientation and approximate extent only to the precision supported by the map.
- Check quality metadata. Review acquisition method, coverage, resolution, uncertainty, tide processing and gridding.
- Test alternative explanations. Consider natural seabed forms, sediment waves, scour, navigation or processing artifacts before proposing cultural material.
- Seek corroboration. Compare independent geophysical or historical evidence and consult the responsible heritage authority before fieldwork or public identification.
Common reading mistakes and fixes
Treating color as a universal depth code
Problem: You infer depth from a familiar blue-to-green palette. Fix: read the exact color bar, units and interval on this map.

Comparing numbers without a datum
Problem: Two charts show different depths, so you conclude the seabed moved. Fix: align units, vertical datums, tide processing and survey dates first.
Calling every anomaly a wreck
Problem: A neat contour pattern is treated as proof of a human-made object. Fix: describe the mapped shape, then seek independent archaeological evidence.
Ignoring survey gaps
Problem: You claim that no feature exists where the display is blank. Fix: inspect coverage, masks, sounding tracks and interpolation notes.
Overstating precision
Problem: You report exact dimensions or coordinates from a low-resolution image. Fix: match the number of significant digits and spatial detail to the stated resolution and uncertainty.
Using a chart-symbol guide as an archaeological guide
Problem: You use U.S. Chart No. 1 to identify a cultural feature. Fix: use it for nautical symbols and numbers, then consult archaeological and site-specific sources for interpretation.
When the map is incomplete
If the legend, datum, date, source or quality statement cannot be found, the responsible conclusion is that interpretation is constrained. Ask the publisher or survey custodian for the original metadata, full-resolution grid and coverage information. NOAA’s cited distribution material indicates that paper bathymetric maps are no longer available through that NCEI distribution page, while digital access remains available; verify the current format and edition before relying on a downloaded product.
For a named coastal site, also identify the jurisdiction and heritage authority. Access rules, protected-site laws, reporting duties and restrictions on sonar, diving, recovery or publication are local questions and cannot be inferred from a general bathymetric map.

Quick checklist
- Source and survey date recorded
- Geographic extent and coverage confirmed
- Scale, resolution or sounding density noted
- Units and vertical datum identified
- Contour interval and color scale read from the legend
- Nearby soundings compared
- Contour spacing and shape described without overclaiming
- Uncertainty, gaps, tide processing and gridding reviewed
- Natural and processing explanations considered
- Archaeological claims supported by evidence beyond the anomaly
The most defensible reading is therefore two-part: say exactly what the bathymetry depicts, and separately state how confidently that pattern can be connected to an archaeological feature.
