What a WhatsApp reaction does
A message reaction adds an emoji to a specific existing message. It can acknowledge a message, show agreement, express laughter or surprise, or signal that you have seen something without adding another line to the chat.
This is different from typing an emoji in the compose box and sending it as a new message. Stickers, GIFs, animated reactions, and emoji replies to Status updates are separate features.
React on Android
- Open WhatsApp and enter an individual or group chat.
- Press and hold the message bubble you want to react to. Pressing the sender name, timestamp, or empty chat area may open a different menu.
- Tap an emoji in the reaction row.
- If a + button is shown, tap it to browse additional emojis in the picker.
The icon layout and labels can differ by Android manufacturer, WhatsApp release, screen size, and accessibility settings. The selected emoji normally appears beneath the message with any reactions from other participants.

React on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and the relevant conversation.
- Touch and hold the message.
- Tap an emoji from the reaction row.
- Tap +, when available, to open a broader emoji picker.
WhatsApp announced a quicker-reaction shortcut that can be triggered by double-tapping a message. Rollout and the emoji used by that shortcut can vary by account and interface, so use press-and-hold when you need a predictable result. WhatsApp’s January 14, 2025 announcement describes the quicker-reaction update.
React on WhatsApp Web or desktop
- Open WhatsApp Web or the WhatsApp desktop app and enter the conversation.
- Hover over the message. A smiley-face or reaction button should appear beside it.
- Click the button and choose an emoji.
- If no icon appears, open the message’s arrow or three-dot menu and choose React to message, if that option is listed.
Hover controls can be easy to miss, and menu wording may change between Web and desktop releases. These steps reflect the common interface described by Forbes’ device guide.
Use an emoji outside the suggested row
The quick-reaction row is limited to commonly used suggestions; it is not a permanent statement that WhatsApp supports only those emojis. If your client shows + beside the suggestions, use it to open the full picker. The control may be unavailable, hidden in a message menu, or absent for a particular message type, platform, release, or account rollout.

If + is missing, update WhatsApp through the official app store and try again. You can also send the emoji as a normal message when the picker is not offered. Reports of custom reaction development, such as this WABetaInfo report, describe testing rather than a universal feature.
Change or remove your reaction
Replace it
- Open the message’s reaction controls again by pressing and holding it on mobile, or using the reaction icon/menu on desktop.
- Choose a different emoji. Your new choice replaces your existing reaction.
On some versions, tapping the reaction displayed beneath the message opens the same controls.
Remove it
- Reopen the reaction controls.
- Tap the emoji currently highlighted for your reaction. In some interfaces, tapping the displayed reaction first opens a reaction list or management control.
Removing a reaction does not guarantee that nobody noticed it: a participant may already have seen it or received a notification.

Who can see a reaction?
In a one-to-one chat, both participants can see the reaction attached to the message. In a group, participants can generally see the reactions and the people who added them by opening the reaction display or list. A reaction is therefore not a private note to the sender.
WhatsApp can notify users when someone reacts to their message, subject to WhatsApp notification settings and the device’s notification configuration. To look for controls, open WhatsApp Settings → Notifications and check for reaction-notification options; labels and availability are release-dependent.
One reaction per person, many reactions per message
A participant generally has one active reaction on a given message. Selecting another emoji replaces it rather than adding a second reaction from the same account. A group message can still show several emojis because different participants can react to it.

Which messages support reactions?
Reactions are commonly available for ordinary text, photos, and videos. Support can differ for stickers, GIFs, voice messages, polls, other interactive formats, and disappearing messages. If the reaction control is absent, that message type, chat mode, or client may not support it in your current version.
For a disappearing message, treat the reaction as part of the message’s lifecycle: it may disappear when the underlying message expires. This behavior is described in procedural coverage of WhatsApp reactions.

- Press and hold directly on the message bubble, not the name, timestamp, or blank space.
- Check whether the item is a system notice or an unsupported interactive message.
- Update WhatsApp from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Close and reopen WhatsApp, then retry.
- Refresh WhatsApp Web or relink the desktop client if the problem is limited to that device.
- Try the same chat on another linked device to identify a client-specific problem.
- Restart the phone if the app or keyboard appears stuck.
- Use WhatsApp’s in-app support/contact route if the control remains unavailable.
Do not install modified WhatsApp clients or unofficial “reaction-enabler” tools; they can expose chats and accounts to privacy, malware, and security risks.

When an emoji is too ambiguous
Emoji meaning depends on context. 👍 can mean agreement, acknowledgment, or simply “I saw this”; ❤️ can express affection, appreciation, or strong approval; 😂, 😮, 😢, and 🙏 can also be read in different ways. Send a written reply instead when the message concerns conflict, instructions, consent, scheduling, money, health, or another subject where a one-character response could be misunderstood.
Consumer app versus Business Platform API
Ordinary users do not need developer tools to react in WhatsApp. The WhatsApp Business Platform has a separate API format that sends a reaction using a message ID and emoji; its request format is documented in Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform collection. That API is for automated business messaging, not the consumer-app steps above.
