The practical choice depends on your group, budget and fitness. APSRTC buses provide the clearest published-price option from several Tirupati departure points. A private car or hired taxi/maxi cab gives door-to-door flexibility, although you must obtain a current quote and check access restrictions. Walkers can use either the longer Alipiri sopanamarga (about 7.80 km and approximately three hours) or the shorter Srivari Mettu path (about 2.10 km and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). All distances, times and fares below come from Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) route guidance accessed in 2026 unless noted otherwise; recheck conditions close to departure.
Quick answer: which route suits you?
For most first-time visitors, start by deciding whether you value a fixed public fare, a flexible departure, or the experience of climbing a pedestrian path.

| Option | What is established | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| APSRTC bus | Regular services leave from Tirupati Railway Station, RTC Central Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station and Balaji Link Bus Station. TTD lists Rs. 90 per adult and Rs. 50 per child one way; return tickets are Rs. 160 and Rs. 90 respectively and are valid for three days from purchase. | Solo travellers, families and anyone wanting a published fare. | Departure times, queues and seat availability can vary; TTD does not promise a particular bus interval on the route-specific page. |
| Own vehicle or hired taxi/maxi cab | Two all-weather asphalt ghat roads connect Tirupati and Tirumala. The uphill road is about 17.80 km and the downhill road about 18.00 km. TTD permits private vehicles and hired taxis/maxi cabs with capacity up to 12 seats, subject to travel-time restrictions. | Groups, older passengers, children, luggage or travellers needing a direct departure. | No reliable taxi fare or journey time is published in the available TTD guidance, so obtain a written current quote and confirm access before paying. |
| Alipiri footpath | About 7.80 km; TTD gives an approximate walking time of three hours. | Walkers who want the longer traditional climb and more time on the path. | Requires substantially more physical effort and time than the road. |
| Srivari Mettu footpath | About 2.10 km; TTD gives an approximate walking time of 1 hour 30 minutes. | Walkers seeking the shorter pedestrian route. | The route is still a climb; the quoted duration is approximate, not a guarantee. |
Do not assume that walking automatically provides a darshan reservation, token or faster temple entry. Travel and temple-entry arrangements are separate, and their availability can change.

Published bus fares
The current route-specific TTD page lists the following road-journey fares:
| Ticket | Adult | Child | Validity or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| One way | Rs. 90 | Rs. 50 | Published by TTD for the road journey; recheck before travel. |
| Return | Rs. 160 | Rs. 90 | TTD says the ticket is valid for three days from purchase; recheck current conditions. |
These are TTD’s published figures accessed in 2026, not a promise that a counter will charge the same amount later. An older TTD transport page displays different, older fare information. Use the route-specific page as the preferred reference and verify the amount at the current ticket counter or through current TTD/APSRTC information before you leave.

- Identify the nearest of the four listed departure points and allow time to find the current boarding area.
- Ask for a Tirumala service and state whether you need a one-way or return ticket. If buying a return ticket, check that its three-day validity suits your itinerary.
- Keep the ticket until you have completed the road journey and any return travel covered by it.
- At Tirumala, note where you get off and where return buses are being directed; the arrangement can differ during crowded periods.
TTD does not publish a fixed route travel time in the cited guidance. Avoid planning a temple appointment around an assumed duration. Congestion, weather, checkpoints and special-event controls can all affect the trip.
Getting to a walking-path start by bus
If you intend to walk rather than ride all the way, TTD says pilgrims can reach the footpath starts by free TTD buses or APSRTC buses from Tirupati. Its transport page specifically describes free TTD buses from Tirupati Railway Station to Alipiri every 30 minutes. That frequency is stated for the railway-station-to-Alipiri service, not for every bus route or every date; verify the current departure point and operating pattern before setting out.

Reach Tirumala by taxi, maxi cab or your own vehicle
Road layout and distance
TTD describes two all-weather asphalt ghat roads. The uphill road is approximately 17.80 km, while the downhill road is approximately 18.00 km. These are route distances, not guaranteed door-to-door mileage from your hotel or a fixed travel time. The roads are engineered for the hill approach, so drivers must follow the direction, speed and access controls in force on the day.
Who should choose a vehicle?
- Families carrying luggage or travelling with young children.
- Older pilgrims or anyone for whom a steep pedestrian climb is unsuitable.
- Groups that can share a maxi cab of up to 12 seats, subject to the vehicle’s legal capacity and the operator’s terms.
- Travellers who need to leave at a particular time instead of waiting for a public bus.
TTD says pilgrims may use their own vehicle or hire a taxi/maxi cab. The available guidance does not establish a dependable taxi fare, named operator or standard journey time. Ask the driver or company to specify the total price, tolls or parking treatment, passenger capacity, waiting charges, luggage policy and cancellation terms in writing. A low initial quote can become expensive if waiting or return charges are added.

Vehicle travel-time restrictions
TTD says the ghat roads are normally open from 3:00 AM to midnight. Vehicle movement may be round the clock on special occasions. “Normally open” is not a guarantee that a particular vehicle will be admitted at any hour: temporary controls, festivals, weather or crowd-management measures can override the usual window. Confirm current access conditions before a late-night departure, and do not ask a driver to bypass a checkpoint or restriction.
Step-by-step for a hired vehicle
- Confirm whether you need a one-way drop, a return journey or an hourly arrangement.
- Request the vehicle type and seating capacity. TTD’s guidance allows a taxi or maxi cab up to 12 seats; do not overload beyond the vehicle’s legal limit.
- Get the fare and inclusions in writing, including waiting time, extra stops and the return pickup plan.
- Check that the driver knows the current ghat-road access window and any event-specific instructions.
- Keep the operator’s phone number available and agree on an exact Tirumala meeting point for the return.
If your vehicle breaks down
TTD lists auto-clinic/crane assistance at 0877-2263636 and 9000503089. Service charges apply at the rates in force. For a medical emergency, call 108 for an ambulance. Move passengers to a safe location when possible, warn approaching traffic and give the operator your direction of travel and nearest identifiable point.
Walk from Tirupati: Alipiri or Srivari Mettu?
TTD calls the two stone pedestrian routes sopanamargas. Both are uphill pilgrim paths, not ordinary level walks. Select one according to distance, available daylight, your health and the time you can spend climbing.

| Path | Approximate distance | TTD’s approximate duration | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alipiri | 7.80 km | About 3 hours | Longer route; allow additional time for rests, crowds and your own pace. |
| Srivari Mettu | 2.10 km | About 1 hour 30 minutes | Shorter route, but still a sustained climb; the shorter distance does not make it effortless. |
The figures are approximate route measurements and indicative walking times. A fast, fit adult and a family with children will not necessarily take the same time. Heat, rain, footwear, rest stops, crowd density and medical needs can extend the climb.
Alipiri path
At about 7.80 km, Alipiri is the longer pedestrian approach. It suits pilgrims who deliberately want a more extended climb and can schedule approximately three hours or more. Treat TTD’s three-hour figure as a planning baseline, not an arrival promise. Build in time for water, rest and any queue or security arrangement at the top.
Srivari Mettu path
Srivari Mettu is approximately 2.10 km, with TTD listing about 1 hour 30 minutes. It can reduce the distance for walkers, but the route remains a hill climb with steps and elevation gain. TTD reported on 6 May 2025 that facilities along Srivari Mettu were to be improved. That report is historical context; it does not confirm the condition of every facility or any current token arrangement. Check the latest on-site instructions rather than relying on that older report.
How to reach the path starts
Use a free TTD bus or an APSRTC bus from Tirupati to the relevant starting point. The free railway-station-to-Alipiri service is described as running every 30 minutes on TTD’s transport page; confirm that service and the correct stop on your travel date. If you are starting at Srivari Mettu, ask the current TTD or APSRTC counter for the active connection rather than assuming the Alipiri service continues to that entrance.
What TTD says is available on the footpaths
TTD lists toilets, drinking water, resting shelters, medical assistance, catering, security patrols and continuous religious broadcasts along the pedestrian routes. Facilities can be busy or temporarily altered, so carry only what you can comfortably manage and use the marked services. TTD also says pilgrims may deposit luggage at the foot of the hills and collect it at designated counters in Tirumala. Confirm the current counter location, hours and claim procedure before handing over valuables; keep identification, medication and essential items with you.

Prepare your body and equipment
- Choose the route with your health condition in mind, as TTD advises. Anyone with a condition affected by exertion should obtain personal medical advice before attempting the climb.
- Wear comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with secure grip. Footwear is preparation advice, not a TTD requirement or endorsement of a particular brand.
- Carry a small, manageable bag rather than a heavy suitcase; use the designated luggage-deposit service if appropriate.
- Plan rest stops and do not race other pilgrims. Stop and seek medical assistance if you feel chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness or confusion.
- Keep children within sight and use the marked path, shelters and security support.
How to choose between bus, vehicle and walking
Choose the bus when price certainty matters
The bus is the only option here with a current TTD-published passenger fare. It works well for a solo traveller or family that can reach one of the four boarding points and does not need a private departure. Budget for possible waiting and avoid treating an older fare table as current.
Choose a taxi or your own vehicle when flexibility matters
A private vehicle is the practical choice for a group, substantial luggage or limited mobility. The trade-off is price uncertainty: the available TTD guidance confirms that hire is possible but does not publish a standard fare. Compare written quotations and check the access window, especially for early-morning or late-evening plans.
Choose a footpath when the climb is part of your pilgrimage
Walking offers two distinct distances and TTD-listed support facilities. It is not simply a cheaper road trip: it demands physical effort, time and sensible pacing. Select Alipiri for the longer approximately 7.80-km approach or Srivari Mettu for the shorter approximately 2.10-km route, without assuming either guarantees temple-entry benefits.
A practical planning checklist
- Check the latest TTD route guidance and current APSRTC information shortly before travel; fares, schedules, road restrictions, token arrangements and facilities can change.
- Record your chosen departure point, the route you intend to use and a realistic arrival window.
- For a bus, confirm the current one-way or return fare and retain the ticket.
- For a taxi or maxi cab, confirm capacity, total price, waiting terms and the return meeting point.
- For walking, choose Alipiri or Srivari Mettu after considering health, weather, daylight and luggage.
- Keep emergency numbers accessible: 0877-2263636 or 9000503089 for TTD-listed auto-clinic/crane assistance, and 108 for an ambulance.
- Do not rely on an old fare table, an old news report or an unverified token claim as proof of today’s arrangements.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Planning around an invented bus timetable
TTD confirms regular services from several Tirupati points but does not provide a universal interval or fixed journey time in the route-specific guidance. Check the current station information and leave a buffer before any appointment.

Booking a taxi without defining “return”
Some operators may interpret return as a same-day wait, while others price a drop and a separate pickup. Agree on the exact arrangement, waiting duration and extra-charge triggers before departure.
Starting a footpath climb with unsuitable luggage
A suitcase can make steps and rest stops unnecessarily difficult. Use TTD’s designated luggage-deposit process if available for your journey, and retain essential medication, identification and valuables.
Treating historical information as current
A 6 May 2025 TTD news report mentioned proposed improvements at Srivari Mettu and complaints about token access, auto drivers and fares at that time. It cannot establish a current token problem, fare or facility condition. Rely on current on-site instructions and official updates instead.

Bottom line
Take an APSRTC bus if you want the most transparent published price and can use a Tirupati boarding point. Hire a taxi/maxi cab or drive if your group needs direct, flexible travel and you are willing to verify a variable price and current road access. Walk via Alipiri or Srivari Mettu only after matching the climb to your health and schedule: TTD lists approximately three hours for 7.80 km on Alipiri and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for 2.10 km on Srivari Mettu. Recheck every fare, schedule, restriction and footpath arrangement near departure.
