To re-pair Bluetooth earbuds, remove them from Windows Bluetooth settings, put them in the manufacturer’s pairing mode, add them again, and select them as the sound output. If stereo becomes muffled or mono only when a call or chat app uses the earbuds’ microphone, re-pairing may not fix it: classic Bluetooth switches to a hands-free profile with different audio capabilities.
Re-pair earbuds in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the earbuds, select More options (…), then choose Remove device.
- Use the earbud maker’s instructions to put the earbuds into pairing mode. Make sure they are powered on, charged, and near the PC.
- In Settings, select Add device > Bluetooth, then choose the earbuds when they appear.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the earbuds under Output. You can also select the output from the taskbar sound controls.
Microsoft documents this remove-and-add process and output selection in its Bluetooth connected but no sound troubleshooting guide. Pairing gestures vary by earbud model, so use the maker’s instructions rather than assuming a universal button sequence.

These are Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 paths; the Settings labels differ from Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting and support guidance.
Why earbuds may turn mono or muffled during calls
Classic Bluetooth uses different profiles for media playback and headset calls. Microsoft describes A2DP as stereo playback for general audio such as music and video. The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) supports microphone capture with monaural playback. On Windows 11, endpoints are unified for devices that support HFP: Windows normally uses A2DP for playback, but selects HFP when an app opens the microphone endpoint or creates a communications playback stream. Windows 10 may show separate Stereo and Hands-Free endpoints; using the Hands-Free microphone can switch audio to HFP.

- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
This is why music can sound clear until a meeting, game chat, or calling app starts using the earbud microphone. Re-pairing does not remove the profile trade-off or add A2DP support that the earbuds lack. For classic Bluetooth, a practical workaround is to keep the earbuds as the output device and choose a separate microphone, such as the PC’s built-in mic, in the calling app. The exact app controls vary. Microsoft explains the profiles and Windows endpoint behavior in its Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation.
When Windows 11 can keep stereo audio while the microphone is active
Stereo playback with an active microphone is a conditional Bluetooth LE Audio capability, not a general setting available on every Windows PC. Microsoft requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, integrated Bluetooth LE support in the PC, required manufacturer drivers, and earbuds or other Bluetooth audio devices that support LE Audio. If the PC, peripheral, or driver does not meet those requirements, Microsoft says microphone use results in mono audio.

- Pair and connect the LE Audio device.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the device under Output.
- Expand Output settings > Format and look for Format when microphone is active.
If that control is absent, Microsoft says the system does not support stereo audio while the microphone is active. If stereo mode causes glitches or lost audio, try mono for compatibility. Also check that the system-wide mono audio accessibility setting is off when you want stereo. See Microsoft’s LE Audio quality settings guidance.

- Check the selected output. Confirm Windows and the audio app are sending sound to the earbuds, then check both Windows and app volume. Microsoft’s no-sound guide covers output selection and volume checks.
- Check the audio format. Microsoft documents 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) in its Windows 11 and Windows 10 instructions. In Windows 11, the device must be connected to access its advanced sound properties.
- Restart Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, and retry the connection or pairing process.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Windows 11 users can use Get Help or the troubleshooting options in Settings.
- Update the Bluetooth adapter driver. Use Device Manager or follow the PC manufacturer’s driver guidance; restart if Windows requests it.
- Check device visibility and readiness. Make sure Bluetooth is on, airplane mode is off, and the earbuds are on, charged, and in range. If they do not appear in Windows 11, check whether Bluetooth device discovery is set to Advanced.
- Confirm stereo capability. Check that the earbuds support A2DP for higher-quality stereo streaming. A re-pair cannot add a Bluetooth profile the device does not support.
- If only one earbud plays, the issue may be a device-side pairing or channel problem. Follow the earbud maker’s reset and support instructions; the correct reset steps depend on the model.
