To raise money with video crowdfunding, choose the right funding model and platform, set a goal that covers the full cost of completing the project and meeting supporter commitments, then make a clear, honest video showing who you are, what exists now, how funds will be used, and what supporters can do next. A strong video helps explain a campaign; it cannot guarantee that the campaign will be funded.
Choose the crowdfunding model before making the video
“Crowdfunding” covers several different arrangements. A pledge toward a creative project, a donation to a person, a recurring membership, a loan, and an investment do not give supporters the same expectations or rights. Decide what you are asking for before you script the video.

Platform descriptions and availability can change, and eligibility depends on location and project. Kickstarter’s overview, published September 11, 2026, describes Kickstarter as reward-based and all-or-nothing, GoFundMe as donation-based and flexible, Indiegogo as reward-based with funding options that vary, and Patreon as a membership platform with recurring contributions. Treat those as platform-published descriptions, not a substitute for checking current country eligibility and terms on the Kickstarter creator handbook, Indiegogo campaign setup guidance, and the platform you plan to use.

Build a campaign budget and goal you can defend
Work out what it will actually take to finish the project and meet the promises made in the campaign. Include production or manufacturing, packaging, shipping, platform and payment fees, taxes, and a realistic allowance for delays or changes. Do not use a generic fee percentage or goal formula: fees, payout timing, tax treatment, and shipping obligations depend on the platform, project, and location.

- Separate the amount needed to create the project from the cost of delivering rewards or other commitments.
- Explain the intended use of funds in plain language and make it consistent across the video and campaign page.
- Check when funds are released, what fees are retained, and what happens if the target is not reached.
- Plan how you will communicate changes, delays, refunds, and fulfillment after the campaign.
The FTC warns that organizers control funds raised through crowdfunding and may not deliver them to the intended person or cause. For a business project or invention, a successful campaign does not guarantee completion, and a contribution is not necessarily a purchase of a finished product. Before contributing, the FTC advises checking the organizer, production status, refund conditions, risks, and purpose of the funds in its crowdfunding guidance.
Plan a video that answers a backer’s real questions
Keep the video direct and personal. Kickstarter’s creator lesson recommends a short introduction, the project’s features and benefits, the creator’s backstory, supporting facts or milestones, and a clear call to action. It recommends scripting and storyboarding, but does not say that a large budget or elaborate equipment is necessary. The video should complement the campaign page rather than replace details about the goal, timeline, budget, risks, and use of funds.
- Introduce yourself and the project. Say what you are making or funding in ordinary language, and why you are the person bringing it forward.
- Show what exists today. Film the real prototype, work sample, design, rehearsal, or process. Be explicit about what is complete and what remains to be done.
- Explain why it matters now. Identify who the project serves and what problem, need, or creative aim it addresses. Use claims you can substantiate.
- Describe the funding purpose. Give a concise explanation in the video; put meaningful budget details, milestones, and timeline on the campaign page.
- Name material risks and uncertainties. Explain likely challenges, dependencies, or delays and how you intend to handle them.
- Set accurate expectations. Describe rewards, delivery estimates, or other supporter benefits without presenting plans as completed facts.
- Ask for one next step. Invite viewers to pledge, donate, or share, whichever action fits the campaign.
This outline follows platform guidance; it is not a tested conversion formula. Kickstarter’s story guidance asks creators to explain what they are making, why, the production stage, risks, timeline, milestones, budget, partnerships, and how they will address challenges. It also recommends putting key information in text for people using screen readers. Keep important claims and details available on the campaign page as well as in the video.
Film with simple equipment and clear sound
A webcam or smartphone, good lighting, a quiet and tidy space, a planned script, the project itself, and a friend to hold the camera are enough to start, according to Kickstarter’s DIY video checklist. A smartphone tripod is an optional convenience for a solo creator, not a requirement. Prioritize being understandable and showing the real work over buying production gear.

- Choose a quiet room and reduce distracting background noise.
- Place yourself and the project in good light; check that the viewer can see important details.
- Plan shots in advance so the video shows both the person behind the project and evidence of the project itself.
- Record a short test and review the picture and sound before filming the full version.
- Use captions or accompanying text so important information is accessible and easy to revisit.
Choose and set up the platform carefully
Compare platforms on more than familiarity. The FTC recommends checking fees and when funds are released; Indiegogo’s creator setup guidance also emphasizes preparing the story, rewards and add-ons, shipping and tax information, testing the flow, and submitting for review.
- Model and goal rules: Is the campaign donation, reward, membership, debt, or equity? Is funding all-or-nothing or flexible?
- Geography and eligibility: Can you launch and receive funds in your country, and can your intended supporters participate?
- Fees and payouts: What platform and payment fees apply, and when and how are funds released?
- Fulfillment: How will the platform handle rewards, shipping, taxes, refunds, updates, and post-campaign pledges?
- Campaign review: What materials and approvals are required before launch?
Indiegogo’s setup guidance, updated August 18, 2026, describes an upcoming phase to build an audience, an active crowdfunding phase, and post-campaign pledge management and fulfillment. Use the platform’s current instructions for your own campaign; the sequence and terms may change.

Kickstarter’s rules require projects to create something new to share, present information honestly, and use materials the creator has rights to use. Its rules say, “Projects must be clearly and fully presented at the time of submission.” For Design and Technology projects, prototype demonstrations must reflect the product’s current state; CGI or special effects must not depict functionality that does not yet exist. If software or hardware integration is unfinished, disclose its status or dependencies. See Kickstarter’s project rules and confirm the current rules for the platform you choose.

Special case: U.S. securities crowdfunding
If the campaign offers securities, do not treat it as a normal reward or donation campaign. The SEC’s issuer guide to Regulation Crowdfunding says the offering must be conducted exclusively through one online platform operated by a broker-dealer or funding portal registered with the SEC and FINRA. It describes pre-filing “testing the waters” as subject to restrictions, including that no money is solicited or accepted and no purchase offer can be accepted before the applicable filing and requirements.
The SEC’s Regulation Crowdfunding interpretations, last updated July 9, 2026, state that outside-platform notices advertising offering terms are limited to information allowed by Rule 204(b), and that a video may advertise terms if it complies with that rule. These are specialized securities-law requirements, not general campaign-video tips. Check current SEC guidance and consult qualified counsel for the actual offering and jurisdiction.
What a campaign video can—and cannot—tell you
Kickstarter’s “Creating an Effective Campaign Video” lesson reports that 75% of successful Kickstarter campaigns feature a video. The lesson text does not specify the dataset period, denominator definition, or methodology, so that figure should be read only as Kickstarter’s reported statistic—not proof that adding a video causes a campaign to succeed. The sources cited here do not establish a broadly applicable percentage lift or universal ideal runtime. Focus instead on whether the video makes the project, its current stage, funding needs, risks, and next step clear.
