How to Put a PS5 in Rest Mode and Turn It Off Completely

Press the PS button, choose Power, then select Enter Rest Mode. Wait for the indicator to change from blinking white to steady orange. For a complete shutdown, choose Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait until the indicator is dark. A single press of the console’s power button enters Rest Mode; holding that button until it beeps shuts the console down. Never unplug the AC cord while the indicator is lit or blinking.

Choose the power state you need

Rest Mode is the PS5’s low-power standby state. It can keep selected functions running, such as charging through USB, downloading updates or games, and suspending a game or app, provided those options are enabled. A full shutdown ends those functions and leaves the console with no indicator light.

  • Use Rest Mode when you want the console to resume quickly, charge a controller, or continue downloads and updates.
  • Use Turn Off PS5 when you are finished and want the console completely shut down.
  • Use the console’s physical button if the controller is unavailable.

The labels and available options are documented by PlayStation Support’s power-saving guide. Some Rest Mode options can vary by PS5 model group.

How to put a PS5 in Rest Mode with the controller

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller. This opens the Control Center along the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Select Enter Rest Mode.
  4. Wait while the indicator blinks white and then settles on orange.

Orange is the confirmation that the PS5 is in Rest Mode. Do not disconnect power during the transition: the blinking white light means the console is still changing state. The procedure and indicator behavior are described in the PlayStation Support instructions and Sony’s CFI-71XX PS5 Quick Start Guide.

Enter Rest Mode with the console button

If you do not have the controller, press the PS5’s power button once. A single press requests Rest Mode. Watch the indicator until the white transition finishes and orange appears; a blank television screen by itself does not confirm the final state.

Wake the console from Rest Mode

Press the PS button on a paired controller to wake the PS5. The orange indicator will change as the console returns to its active state. If you have connected more than one controller, press the PS button on the controller you want to use.

How to turn the PS5 off completely

Shut down from the Control Center

  1. Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Select Turn Off PS5.
  4. Wait for the indicator to blink white and then turn off completely.

The shutdown is finished only when there is no light. The initial white blinking is part of the shutdown process, not proof that the console is already off.

Shut down with the physical power button

Hold the console’s power button until it beeps. The display will go blank, the indicator will flash white, and the light will eventually turn off. Release the button after the beep and leave the PS5 connected until the indicator is dark. This is the physical-button alternative to choosing Turn Off PS5 in the Control Center.

PS5 indicator lights and what they mean

The indicator is the most reliable way to verify the final state. A transition can include a blinking white light, so wait for the steady result rather than relying on the television turning off.

PS5 state Indicator What remains available
On Steady white The console is fully operating.
Changing state Blinking white The PS5 is entering Rest Mode or shutting down; wait for the final indication.
Rest Mode Steady orange Selected low-power features can continue, depending on settings.
Off No light The console is shut down; Rest Mode functions have stopped.

For the official descriptions of these colors, see PlayStation’s power-indicator-light reference.

What Rest Mode can continue doing

Rest Mode is not the same as turning the PS5 off. It reduces power use while leaving selected hardware functions available. Each function is controlled in the power-saving settings, so a newly configured console may not behave like another PS5.

USB power for charging

You can allow the USB ports to supply power while the console is in Rest Mode. With that option enabled, a connected controller can charge without leaving the PS5 fully on. USB behavior is controlled under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.

Internet connection for downloads and updates

The PS5 can remain connected to the internet in Rest Mode so downloads and system or game updates can continue. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet in the same Features Available in Rest Mode menu. If that setting is disabled, entering Rest Mode does not keep the connection available for those tasks.

Suspended games and apps

Rest Mode can suspend a game or app so you can return to it instead of starting from the beginning. This is a convenience feature, not a full shutdown: the console is retaining a running session while using less power.

Why power use differs

The more functions you leave enabled, the more electricity the console uses while in Rest Mode. Choosing to keep USB power, internet access, and other available features active is a trade-off between convenience and lower standby consumption. Selecting Don’t Put in Rest Mode keeps the PS5 operating instead of entering standby and therefore uses more power than Rest Mode.

Rest Mode or full shutdown: a practical comparison

Both choices begin from the same Power menu, but they serve different purposes. Rest Mode is a controlled pause: the orange light tells you that the PS5 is still available for the functions you selected. Full shutdown is a clean stop: no light confirms that those background functions have ended.

Need Best choice Reason
Resume a suspended game or app quickly Rest Mode The session can remain suspended.
Charge a controller from the PS5 Rest Mode USB power can remain available when enabled.
Finish a download or update while away Rest Mode Internet access can remain enabled.
Stop all standby activity Turn Off PS5 USB charging, downloads, installations, and suspension stop.
Disconnect the console safely Turn Off PS5 first The cable should be removed only after the indicator is dark.

There is no advantage in selecting Rest Mode if you specifically need the console completely off. Conversely, turning the PS5 off prevents the background work that Rest Mode is designed to support. Choose the state before you leave the room, then confirm it by the light rather than by the television display.

What changes when the PS5 is fully off

When the indicator is dark, the PS5 is no longer in its low-power operating state. It cannot charge controllers through its USB ports, download content, or install content while fully shut down. Those tasks resume only after you turn the console on again.

A full shutdown is therefore the appropriate choice when you do not need background downloads, controller charging, or a suspended game. It also gives you an unambiguous visual confirmation: no light means the shutdown has completed.

Adjust automatic Rest Mode timing

The PS5 can enter Rest Mode automatically after inactivity. To change that delay:

  1. Open Settings from the home screen.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Power Saving.
  4. Open Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
  5. Choose the timeout you want for media playback and while playing games.

These controls determine when the console changes itself from active operation to Rest Mode; they do not turn the PS5 off completely. If you select Don’t Put in Rest Mode, the PS5 remains on instead of entering standby, which consumes more power than Rest Mode. The menu path is listed in PlayStation Support’s power-saving documentation.

Choose which Rest Mode features stay available

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Power Saving.
  3. Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Enable or disable the options you need, including USB power and staying connected to the internet.

Menu wording or the exact set of options can differ between model groups. If an option is absent, use the labels shown on your own console rather than assuming the setting has been moved to another menu.

How to verify each transition

Use a short confirmation routine every time you press a power control. After selecting Enter Rest Mode, keep watching until blinking white becomes orange. After selecting Turn Off PS5, wait through the white blink until the indicator disappears. If you used the physical button, apply the same test: one press ends on orange, while holding it until the beep ends with no light.

This matters because the television can go blank before the console has completed its transition. A dark screen is not a power-state indicator. The console light is the status signal: orange means standby functions may still be running, white means it is active, blinking white means it is changing state, and no light means it is off.

Safe shutdown and AC-power rules

Do not pull the AC plug, switch off a power strip, or otherwise disconnect electricity while the indicator is solid or blinking. The console may still be writing data or changing state.

“Disconnect the AC power cord from the electrical outlet only when the power indicator is off. If you disconnect it while the power indicator is on solidly or blinking, data might be lost or become corrupted, and you might damage your console.”

This warning appears in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CFI-71XX PS5 Quick Start Guide. Treat unplugging as a power-loss event, not as a normal shutdown method. First select Turn Off PS5 or hold the physical button until it beeps, then wait for the indicator to go dark before disconnecting the cable.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing one press with a shutdown: one press of the console button requests Rest Mode. For a complete shutdown, use the Control Center or hold the button until it beeps.
  • Leaving during the white blink: blinking white is transitional. Wait for orange or no light before touching the cable or power strip.
  • Assuming every PS5 has identical options: Rest Mode labels and available choices can vary by model group. Follow the wording displayed under your own Power Saving menu.
  • Expecting downloads while fully off: downloads, installations, and USB charging require the relevant Rest Mode features and stop when the console is off.
  • Using “Don’t Put in Rest Mode” as a shutdown command: that setting keeps the PS5 on after inactivity and uses more power than Rest Mode; it does not turn the console off.

Common situations and the correct action

You want a download to continue while you are away

Use Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Confirm the orange indicator before leaving the console.

You want to charge a controller overnight

Use Rest Mode with USB power enabled in Features Available in Rest Mode. A fully shut-down PS5 does not provide that Rest Mode charging function.

You are finished and want no background activity

Select Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait until no indicator light remains. This stops downloads, installations, USB charging, and suspended-session behavior.

The screen is already blank

Do not assume the console is off just because the television has lost its picture. Check the indicator: orange means Rest Mode, blinking white means a transition is still in progress, and no light means the shutdown is complete.

You pressed the console button once by mistake

A single press requests Rest Mode rather than a full shutdown. Wait for the orange indicator, then wake the PS5 with the controller if you need to continue playing. To shut down afterward, use Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait for the light to disappear.

Fast reference checklist

  • Rest Mode from the controller: PS button > Power > Enter Rest Mode; finish on orange.
  • Rest Mode from the console: press the power button once; finish on orange.
  • Complete shutdown from the controller: PS button > Power > Turn Off PS5; finish with no light.
  • Complete shutdown from the console: hold the power button until it beeps; wait for no light.
  • Before unplugging: verify that the indicator is off, never solid or blinking.
