How to Provide Monarchs with Nectar and Milkweed Throughout the Season

Provide monarchs with two different resources: milkweed for caterpillars and a succession of nectar-rich flowers for adults. Choose plants suited to your region and site, aim for blooms from the growing season into fall migration, and avoid insecticides in or near the habitat.

Plan for both caterpillars and adult monarchs

Milkweed is the host plant monarch caterpillars depend on. Adult monarchs feed on nectar from a variety of flowers, including when milkweed is not in bloom and during fall migration. A useful planting therefore combines locally appropriate milkweed with multiple nectar plants whose bloom periods overlap or follow one another.

Choose plants for your region and garden conditions

There is no single nationwide plant list or bloom calendar that fits every garden. Species and timing depend on location, sun, soil, and local growing conditions. Start with regional recommendations rather than choosing plants solely because they attract monarchs elsewhere.

Seed Needs Milkweed Seeds Variety Pack of 5 Perennial Flowers for Monarchs
  • Pollinator Attraction: Milkweed flowers are known for attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They produce a sweet nectar that is particularly enticing to monarch butterflies, which lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed plants.
  • 5 Packets: This collection includes Showy Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias speciosa), Pink Swamp Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias incarnata), White Swamp Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias incarnata), Orange Butterfly Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias tuberosa) & Common Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias syriaca.)
  • Ecological Importance: Milkweed is crucial for the survival of monarch butterflies, providing not only nectar but also foliage for caterpillars to feed on. The presence of milkweed in an ecosystem supports biodiversity and is vital for the monarch's life cycle.
  • Quality: All Milkweed seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.

For example, Xerces’ Mid-Atlantic nectar guide is intended for that region and cautions that suitability varies by site. Do not use a Mid-Atlantic list as a recipe for a garden elsewhere.

Set a practical scale and site

For a Monarch Watch waystation, the organization recommends at least ten milkweed plants, ideally divided between two or more species; a larger group of one species can also be sufficient for a waystation. This is a waystation recommendation, not a proven minimum for every yard or a guarantee of monarch visits.

  • Monarch Watch says a site should ideally receive at least six hours of sun daily.
  • Most native milkweeds and nectar plants prefer well-drained soil, though some species suit wetter conditions.
  • Arrange plants close enough to provide shelter, but do not crowd them.

For specific species, use regional lists and check each plant’s growing requirements against your garden rather than treating a waystation list as universally suitable.

Start milkweed from seed with the right timing

Many native milkweed seeds germinate better after cold, moist conditions, a process often called stratification or vernalization. The simple option is to sow outdoors in fall so winter provides those conditions. Spring sowing is also possible, but may require artificial stratification in a refrigerator. Follow the instructions for the particular species and seed lot; requirements are not identical for every milkweed.

See Monarch Joint Venture’s guidance on when to plant milkweed for general timing advice.

Keep insecticides out and check plant sourcing

Avoid insecticides in or near the habitat. When buying milkweed or nectar plants, ask the nursery or seller whether plants were treated with systemic pesticides; do not assume an unverified plant is pesticide-free. Monarch Watch recommends pesticide-free native plants and points gardeners toward local nurseries, native plant society sales, Extension Master Gardener sales, and its Milkweed Market. Monarch Joint Venture’s milkweed sourcing guidance also offers a starting point for finding plants.

Special caution near California overwintering sites

If your garden is near a California monarch overwintering site, Monarch Joint Venture advises planting milkweed only when it historically occurred in that region and the garden is more than one mile from an overwintering site. Native nectar flowers blooming from early spring through fall remain useful there. This guidance is specific to California overwintering areas, not a general rule for all monarch gardens. Read the California-specific guidance.

HOME GROWN Common Milkweed 150 Flower Seeds Asclepias syriaca
  • MONARCH BUTTERFLY HABITAT: Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a host plant for monarch butterfly larvae. Planting this native wildflower helps support monarch populations by providing a food source for caterpillars. Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9.
  • FRAGRANT BLOOMS: This variety grows 3–5 ft. tall and produces scented pink to mauve flower clusters, 2–4 inches wide. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. The flowers attract various pollinators, including native bees, honeybees, hummingbirds, and hoverflies.
  • PERENNIAL GROWTH HABIT: As a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 3–9, common milkweed typically returns each year through rhizomes and natural reseeding. Seeds are open-pollinated.
  • PLANTING AND GERMINATION: Seeds can be direct sown in fall to allow for natural cold-stratification, or cold-stratified in the refrigerator for 30 days prior to spring planting. Plant seeds 1/8–1/4 inch deep in well-drained soil. Germination generally occurs at 60–70°F.
  • ADAPTABLE TO VARIOUS SOILS: Once established, common milkweed is drought-tolerant and performs well in average to poor, well-drained soil. Requires little supplemental watering or fertilization once established. Seed pods may remain through the fall to provide interest in the landscape.
