The most reliable way to reduce West Nile virus (WNV) risk is to prevent mosquito bites. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent exactly as its label directs, wear long loose-fitting clothing, avoid outdoor time from dusk to dawn when transmitting mosquitoes are most active, and keep mosquitoes outside with intact screens or air conditioning when available.
No licensed vaccine or preventive medicine is available for people. Protection therefore depends on combining these measures, removing standing-water breeding sites, and following local public-health advice.

What West Nile virus is and how infection happens
West Nile virus is mainly spread to people when an infected mosquito bites. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds and can then transmit it during later bites. A bite does not automatically mean infection, but avoiding bites is the controllable step that reduces exposure.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites.” Its West Nile prevention page was updated and reviewed June 25, 2026. CDC key messages report more than 31,800 U.S. cases involving neurologic illness and more than 2,900 deaths from 1999 through 2024. Those are cumulative figures for that entire period, not a count for the current mosquito season.

Build protection in layers
No single action works in every setting. A practical plan uses several barriers at the same time, especially during warm weather or in places where local health authorities report mosquito activity.
1. Choose an EPA-registered insect repellent
Use a product with an EPA registration number and follow its label for where, how much and how often to apply it. EPA registration means the manufacturer supplied technical information about the product’s effectiveness. Registration does not mean every product or concentration protects for the same length of time.

CDC lists these active ingredients as being found in registered repellents:
| Active ingredient | What to check on the label | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DEET | Concentration, directions and age restrictions | Protection time varies by formulation and concentration; use the stated duration rather than assuming a standard interval. |
| Picaridin | Concentration, directions and reapplication instructions | Do not infer performance from another product or concentration. |
| IR3535 | Application directions and duration | Follow the individual label for the activity and body areas covered. |
| Oil of lemon eucalyptus | Minimum age and directions | Do not use on children younger than 3 years. |
| Para-menthane-diol (PMD) | Minimum age and directions | Do not use on children younger than 3 years. |
| 2-undecanone | Directions, duration and age restrictions | Use only as the registered label permits. |
When comparing products, look at the active ingredient, its concentration, the label’s stated protection time, application directions and age restrictions. CDC’s general mosquito guidance points consumers to the EPA search tool, which can filter products by active ingredient, protection time and other label information. Because the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural, is not known, do not treat “natural” as a synonym for proven protection.
Apply repellent correctly
- Read the entire label before the first use and keep the container so you can check directions later.
- Apply only to exposed skin and clothing areas permitted by the label. Do not put repellent under clothing unless the label specifically allows it.
- Keep it out of eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin. Never spray directly into the face; spray onto hands first, then carefully apply to the face.
- Do not apply more often than the label permits. More product does not necessarily provide longer protection.
- After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water. Wash treated clothing as directed on the product label.
- If sunscreen is also needed, apply sunscreen first and repellent second, unless the product label gives different instructions.
2. Cover skin with clothing
Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks made from a comfortable, loose fit. Clothing that is loose rather than tight leaves fewer opportunities for mosquitoes to bite through fabric and is generally easier to wear in heat. Tuck pant legs into socks or footwear when conditions make that practical, and choose tightly woven material for exposed areas.

For additional protection, CDC recommends clothing and gear treated with permethrin. The CDC outbreak communication toolkit specifies 0.5% permethrin for clothing and gear. Permethrin treatment is for fabric and equipment, not skin: never apply a permethrin product intended for clothing directly to your body. Follow the product label for treatment, drying, washing and retreatment instructions, and keep treated items away from children and pets while they are wet if the label requires that precaution.

3. Schedule outdoor time around mosquito activity
CDC’s West Nile guidance advises avoiding outdoor activity between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes that spread WNV are most active. If you must be outside during those hours, use repellent and clothing together rather than relying on a single measure.
Activity patterns can differ with species, weather, habitat and local control efforts. Check notices from your city, county, state or territorial health department for current recommendations, spraying announcements or reported activity. A local advisory does not replace personal protection; it helps you decide when and where to intensify it.
4. Keep mosquitoes outside
- Inspect window and door screens for holes, loose edges and gaps in frames.
- Repair or replace damaged screens before the season’s highest mosquito activity.
- Keep doors closed, especially during evening hours, and avoid propping screened doors open.
- Use air conditioning when available. It reduces the need to open windows and can make indoor spaces less attractive to mosquitoes.
- For porches, tents or other open structures, use screening or mosquito netting that has no tears or large gaps.
5. Remove places where mosquitoes develop
Many mosquitoes lay eggs in small amounts of water. At least once a week, inspect around the home and empty and scrub, turn over, cover or discard items that hold water. Include buckets, plant saucers, toys, trash containers, wheelbarrows, clogged gutters, birdbaths, pet bowls and pool covers. Scrubbing matters because it can remove eggs stuck to container surfaces.
Keep water-storage containers tightly covered. If a container cannot be emptied and is not used for drinking water, use an appropriate larvicide according to its label. CDC says mosquito dunks or other larvicides can be considered for smaller areas of permanent standing water. They are not a substitute for removing water that can be eliminated.

Protecting babies and children
Children need the same layered protection, with extra care about application and age restrictions.
- Never use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD products on children younger than 3 years.
- Read the repellent label for the child’s minimum age and any concentration limits.
- Do not apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin.
- An adult should put repellent on their own hands first and then apply it to the child’s face.
- Do not let children handle or spray repellent containers.
- Dress children in long sleeves, long pants and socks when weather permits.
- Cover strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting designed for that purpose. Check that the net is secure and does not sag into the child’s face.
- For permethrin-treated clothing or gear, use only products labeled for fabric and follow all laundering and drying directions.
A practical routine for an outdoor outing
Before leaving
- Check the local health department’s mosquito notices and the forecast. Move the outing indoors or to a screened location if conditions and local guidance indicate high activity.
- Put on loose, covering clothing and socks. Select treated clothing or gear if you have it and the label confirms it is ready for use.
- Read the repellent label, confirm that it is EPA-registered, and check the minimum age and protection-time instructions.
- Apply repellent to exposed skin as directed. An adult should handle applications for children.
- Pack the container if reapplication may be needed, keeping it away from food and children.
While outside
- Stay in screened or air-conditioned areas when possible, particularly from dusk through dawn.
- Keep sleeves and pant legs in place and avoid standing near containers or equipment holding stagnant water.
- Reapply only at the interval and in the manner stated on the label. Sweat, water exposure and the planned activity may affect the label’s instructions.
- If clothing becomes wet or torn, replace it or add another barrier rather than assuming it still provides the same coverage.
After returning indoors
- Wash treated skin with soap and water, especially before sleeping.
- Inspect children for exposed areas that may have been missed, without applying extra repellent beyond label directions.
- Store repellent securely and launder clothing according to its treatment label.
- Empty water-holding items that were used during the outing and check screens and doors before the next evening.
Choosing measures for different situations
| Situation | Priority measures | Why the combination helps |
|---|---|---|
| Evening backyard use | Long clothing, EPA-registered repellent, screens or a screened area | Dusk-to-dawn activity can overlap with outdoor time, so skin and environmental barriers work together. |
| Daytime gardening | Covering clothing, repellent on exposed skin, weekly water inspection | Some mosquito activity can occur outside the peak period; gardening also creates opportunities to leave containers holding water. |
| Infant in a stroller | Netting over the stroller, covered clothing and an adult-applied product only where the label permits | Netting avoids applying repellent to an infant’s hands or face while blocking access to exposed skin. |
| Camping or outdoor work | EPA-registered repellent, long clothing, permethrin-treated fabric or gear, and a screened shelter | Extended exposure and limited access to indoor spaces make multiple barriers more important. |
| Home with permanent standing water | Eliminate water where possible; consider a labeled larvicide for small unavoidable areas | Source reduction addresses larvae before adult mosquitoes emerge. Larger treatment questions require local professionals. |
Common mistakes that weaken protection
- Using an unregistered product because it sounds safer. CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents is not known. Registration and label directions provide a more reliable basis for choosing.
- Assuming all concentrations last equally long. Protection time differs by active ingredient, concentration, formulation, activity and conditions. Use the label’s claim for that exact product.
- Putting permethrin on skin. Clothing treatment and skin repellent are different products and uses. A fabric-treatment label does not authorize skin application.
- Applying repellent to a child’s hands. Children may rub their eyes or put their hands in their mouths. Apply to your hands first and avoid the child’s hands.
- Ignoring screens because the house has air conditioning. Air conditioning helps when operating, but damaged screens and open doors can still allow mosquitoes inside.
- Emptying water without scrubbing containers. Eggs can adhere to surfaces. Emptying and scrubbing, then turning over, covering or discarding the item, is the CDC-recommended weekly approach.
- Relying on one evening of yard treatment. Mosquito populations and breeding sites change. Repeated inspection and source removal are more dependable than assuming one treatment solves the problem.
- Reading a local spraying notice as a guarantee. Community control can reduce mosquitoes in an area but does not eliminate every bite. Continue personal precautions.
Frequently asked questions
How can I prevent West Nile virus mosquito bites?
CDC recommends an EPA-registered repellent, long sleeves and pants, limiting outdoor time from dusk to dawn, and installing or repairing window and door screens. Add weekly removal of standing water and use air conditioning or screening when available.
Which repellent ingredient should I choose?
CDC lists DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol and 2-undecanone in registered repellents. CDC does not rank one ingredient as universally best. Compare the exact product’s active ingredient, concentration, stated protection time, directions and age restrictions in the EPA search tool and on its label.
Are “natural” repellents safer or more effective?
Not necessarily. CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some products marketed as natural, is not known. Choose an EPA-registered product and follow its label rather than relying on marketing language.
Can I put permethrin on my skin?
No. CDC’s 0.5% permethrin recommendation is for treating clothing and gear. Use a skin repellent only when its own label authorizes application to skin; never substitute a fabric-treatment product.
Can young children use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD?
No. Do not use products containing either ingredient on children younger than 3 years. For older children, follow the product’s minimum-age, concentration and application instructions, and keep repellent away from hands, eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin.

Do mosquito dunks solve a mosquito problem?
They can be considered for small areas of permanent standing water that cannot be removed, but only according to the product label. First empty, scrub, turn over, cover or discard water-holding items. Ask a local mosquito-control program or licensed professional about adulticides or larger areas.
Is there a West Nile vaccine or preventive medicine?
No licensed vaccine or medicine is available to prevent West Nile disease in people. Bite prevention is the main available protection, although it cannot guarantee that infection will not occur.
Are mosquitoes active only at night?
CDC specifically advises avoiding outdoor activity between dusk and dawn because mosquitoes that spread WNV are most active then. Activity can vary by species, weather, habitat and local control efforts, so follow local public-health notices and continue precautions at other times.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What protection can and cannot do
Repellent, clothing, screens and water control reduce opportunities for mosquitoes to bite. They do not make outdoor exposure risk-free, do not prove that a person cannot become infected, and do not replace medical advice if someone becomes ill after mosquito exposure.
The CDC materials cited here are U.S.-focused. The West Nile-specific prevention page was updated and reviewed June 25, 2026; general mosquito-prevention guidance was updated August 28, 2024; the West Nile FAQ was updated August 19, 2025; and the outbreak communication toolkit is dated 2025.
