The most effective protection is to secure the Google Account that controls your YouTube channel. Start with Google Security Checkup, make sure your recovery phone and email are current, turn on two-step verification, and choose a passkey or hardware security key when available. Then remove unneeded connected apps and browser extensions, and treat unsolicited sponsorship offers, links, attachments and software downloads as potential phishing or malware.

YouTube says it will never ask for your password, email address or other account information by email, message or phone call. If a sign-in alert, channel change or video upload is unfamiliar, reject the sign-in, change your Google Account password immediately and follow Google’s recovery and YouTube’s hacked-channel guidance if you are locked out.

What a YouTube account takeover actually means

Your YouTube sign-in is tied to a Google Account. An attacker who obtains that Google Account’s password, session access or verification code may be able to enter YouTube, change channel settings, upload videos, post comments, contact viewers or use the account to target your audience. Protecting the channel therefore starts with the Google Account’s security controls, not with a YouTube-only password.

Creators face additional lures because an attacker can make a message look like a business opportunity. A fake sponsorship may request a file review, channel access, a login, a verification code or a software download. Other creator-focused bait includes free cryptocurrency, encrypted “contracts,” premium editing software and thumbnail templates. The subject line may be plausible even when the sender, attachment or link is dangerous.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Use a simple rule: a legitimate business contact should not need your Google password or a one-time verification code. Verify an offer through a phone number or contact person you already know, not through contact details supplied only in the suspicious message.

Secure the Google Account linked to your channel

1. Run Security Checkup first

Open your Google Account and select Security, then Security Checkup. Follow the account-specific recommendations rather than dismissing them as generic reminders. Check recent security activity, signed-in devices, recovery options, two-step verification and third-party access. The exact labels can change as Google updates its interface, but the Security section remains the place to begin.

Security Checkup is useful because it evaluates the account you actually use for YouTube. A channel can look normal while a forgotten device, old recovery address or unused connected app still provides an attacker with a route in.

2. Use a unique password

Create a long, unique Google Account password that you do not use on any other service. Reusing a password lets a breach at an unrelated site become a YouTube takeover. A reputable password manager can generate and store a different password for every account, so you do not have to memorize a collection of random credentials.

Never type your Google password into a sponsorship form, a “copyright” warning page, a creator-growth dashboard or a file-sharing site reached from an unsolicited message. If a page asks you to sign in, stop and navigate to your Google Account directly in a new tab instead of following the message’s link.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

3. Turn on two-step verification

In your Google Account’s Security area, open 2-Step Verification and complete the setup. Two-step verification adds a second proof after the password. It is stronger than password-only sign-in, but the methods do not all resist phishing equally.

Second-step method Phishing resistance and practical trade-off Recovery consideration
Passkey Google describes a passkey as using a device fingerprint, face scan or screen lock. It cannot be shared, copied, written down or accidentally handed to a scammer. YouTube calls it the strongest option against phishing in its channel-security guidance. Keep another recovery method if the phone or computer holding the passkey is lost, damaged or unavailable.
Hardware security key A physical FIDO2-compatible key is designed for phishing-resistant sign-in. Google says security keys are among the most secure second steps. Store a spare key or another fallback method in a safe place; losing the only key can delay access.
Google Prompt A prompt on a signed-in device is more convenient than typing a code and is listed by YouTube among the stronger choices than text or voice codes. You need access to the device that receives the prompt. Reject prompts you did not initiate.
Authenticator app Time-based codes from an authenticator app avoid dependence on text-message delivery and are ranked by YouTube above text or call codes. Plan how you will restore the authenticator if the phone is replaced or lost.
Text or voice code These methods are better than no second step, but YouTube describes them as less secure than passkeys, security keys, prompts or authenticator apps. They depend on the phone number and cellular service remaining available.
Backup code A backup code can help when another second step is unavailable, but YouTube ranks backup codes below the stronger methods as a primary choice. Generate a new set after use and keep the codes private and offline.

YouTube’s guidance summarizes the priority: “For the strongest protection against threats like phishing, set up 2-Step Verification and choose a passkey as your second verification method.” If a passkey is not available on your devices, a hardware security key is a strong alternative; Google calls security keys “one of the most secure second steps you can use with your Google Account.”

4. Register more than one way back in

Before relying on one phone, passkey or security key, add a fallback. Keep the recovery phone number and recovery email current, generate backup codes and store them somewhere attackers cannot reach, and review the options periodically. A fallback is not a bypass for security; it is protection against losing your own device.

Do not send backup codes to a “support agent” or sponsor. Google and YouTube support will not need a verification code delivered to you in order to prove that they are genuine.

Recognize phishing before it reaches your sign-in

YouTube will not request account information by message

YouTube’s warning is explicit: “YouTube will never ask for your password, email address, or other account information in an email, message or phone call.” Treat any request for those details as suspicious, even when the message uses a logo, a familiar channel name or urgent language.

A real-looking sender address is not proof of legitimacy. Attackers can imitate names, compromise unrelated mailboxes or use a lookalike domain. Inspect the complete address and destination of a link, but do not open the link merely to investigate it. Go to YouTube or your Google Account by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark you created previously.

Creator-specific lures

Lure What the attacker wants Safe response
Fake sponsorship or brand-deal proposal A click, infected attachment, login or channel access Verify the company through a known contact route before opening files or granting access.
“Copyright” or channel-policy warning Your password, a verification code or a session on a fake sign-in page Check notifications inside YouTube directly; do not use the message’s button.
Free cryptocurrency or creator-growth offer A wallet connection, payment, credentials or malware installation Decline unsolicited offers and never share a Google verification code.
Encrypted contract, invoice or media brief An attachment that installs malware or sends you to a credential-stealing page Confirm the sender independently and scan files before opening them; do not disable security protections to view a document.
Free editing software, update or thumbnail template A malicious download or browser extension Use the developer’s known official distribution channel and avoid unknown apps or extensions.

Never surrender a verification code

A one-time code proves control of your account or device. If someone asks you to read one aloud, paste it into a chat or forward it “to confirm the sponsorship,” they are trying to defeat your second step. End the conversation. If you already disclosed the code, change the Google Account password and review devices and security settings immediately.

Reduce malware and session-theft risk

Phishing does not always steal a password on a fake sign-in page. A malicious download can install software that captures credentials, browser sessions or files. YouTube’s channel-security guidance identifies suspicious links in fake sponsorship emails, infected downloads and fake software updates as malware routes.

  • Keep your operating system, browser and creator tools updated through their built-in update mechanisms.
  • Use antivirus software and scan an attachment or download before opening it.
  • Turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome if its risk warnings fit your privacy and security needs.
  • Install apps and browser extensions only from sources you trust; remove extensions you no longer use.
  • Do not disable antivirus, browser warnings or operating-system protections because a stranger says an “encrypted” file requires it.

If a sponsorship requires you to install a new program, ask the contact to provide a normal, verifiable business process instead. A legitimate offer can be checked through a known phone number or existing contact, while a malicious one usually depends on urgency and secrecy.

Review access that is already connected

Third-party apps

In your Google Account’s Security section, review apps and services with account access. Remove anything you no longer need, do not recognize or cannot explain. An app that once helped with analytics or scheduling may retain access long after you stopped using it.

Devices and browser extensions

Check the list of devices signed in to the Google Account. Sign out unfamiliar devices and investigate the date, location and device type before deciding that an entry is yours. On each browser you use for YouTube, remove unknown extensions and review which extensions can read or change data on sites. An extension that can access page content may expose a logged-in session even when your password remains secret.

After removing access, change your password if there is any chance the app, extension or device handled it. Then run Security Checkup again so the account’s recommendations reflect the new state.

What to do when a sign-in alert is unfamiliar

Respond promptly; an alert can be the earliest visible sign of an attempted takeover.

  1. Read the alert details. Check the device type, time and approximate location. A familiar location can still be wrong, so consider whether you initiated the sign-in.
  2. Reject the sign-in if it was not yours. Google says rejecting an unfamiliar sign-in signs the account out on other devices and adds a verification step for future sign-ins on unfamiliar devices.
  3. Change the Google Account password. Do this as soon as possible from a device you trust. Make the new password unique and do not reuse the suspected one.
  4. Inspect security settings and devices. Remove unfamiliar devices, connected apps and browser extensions, and confirm that recovery details and two-step methods have not been replaced.
  5. Run Security Checkup. Follow every high-priority recommendation and review recent security activity again.
  6. Scan the computers and phones used for YouTube. Use current antivirus protection, remove suspicious software and extensions, and enable Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome if appropriate.
  7. Secure other accounts that reused the password. Change those passwords too, beginning with email and any service that can reset another account.

How to tell whether your YouTube channel was hacked

Look for changes you did not make, including videos you did not upload, comments you did not post or unfamiliar channel settings and profile changes. Check YouTube Studio and your Google Account from a trusted device. An attacker may delete evidence, so an apparently quiet channel does not prove that access was never obtained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you still control the account, change the password, remove unfamiliar devices and apps, confirm recovery information, and complete Security Checkup before attempting to restore channel content. Check any linked services for changed permissions and notify collaborators not to trust unusual messages sent from the channel.

If you cannot sign in

Start Google’s official account-recovery process rather than using a “recovery” link sent by a stranger. Provide the most accurate information you can, use a device and location where you normally sign in, and follow the prompts for your recovery phone, email or other available method. Do not pay someone who claims to have a private way around Google’s process and never give that person a verification code.

YouTube provides hacked-channel assistance and recovery guidance for creators. Its channel-security page lists an assistant in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Use that assistance when videos, comments or channel changes indicate compromise or when Google’s account recovery does not restore access.

A maintenance routine for creators

Security is easier when it is part of the publishing workflow rather than an emergency project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Monthly: review recent Google security activity, signed-in devices and third-party access.
  • After changing phones or computers: add the new passkey or authenticator, test a fallback method and remove the old device when it is no longer yours.
  • Before opening a business file: verify the sender through a known route, scan the file and confirm that no login or verification code is being requested.
  • After a suspected incident: change the Google Account password, reject unfamiliar sessions, remove unknown access, scan devices and check other accounts for password reuse.
  • At least twice a year: confirm the recovery email and phone, replace used backup codes and make sure a second trusted person knows how to contact you if your primary device is lost.

Passkeys, security keys and other second steps cannot help if an attacker is already operating a signed-in device, so device hygiene and access reviews belong in the same routine. Keep your strongest sign-in method enabled, retain a safe fallback and treat unexpected creator opportunities as untrusted until independently verified.
